I live in rural Northern Michigan, off the coast of Lake Huron. I've heated my little cottage with wood for 13 years. I don't think many folks realize how much work goes into the process. I'm 60 years old, and I'm honestly over the romantic notions that others have of my homesteading lifestyle here. It's a whole lot of work! Much respect for you , Annabelle ❣
I am having my first winter in the woods with a wood stove. Absolutely had no idea how much work goes into it. I will be planning for next winter in April lol Hugs💕✨
@@Angel_HippieCityHealing That's a good plan, because there's nothing worse than scrambling to get wood in November. I also quickly realized that I needed to have my wood stacked as close to my door as possible. It was no fun trudging through a foot or three of snow to get to the woodshed on my property. I go through about eight cords each winter, and try to keep two cord stacked on my deck, next to the back door. Best of luck to you for your first winter with wood heat!
Just a thought...wood stacked against the house often attracts termites, a bit dangerous. Wearing gloves would be a great protection against sap and splinters🙏🙏blessings to you and your wonderful videos.
Thank you so much for sharing this glimpse into your life with us as we go into the calmer and colder season. Such a beautiful and aesthetically crafted vlog and such peaceful vibes 🥰 Much love from a fellow slow living creator in the countryside of Bavaria 💕
A tip for piling wood (my least favorite winter chore--we've heated with wood for over 35 years now). Do the ends like this: Layer one: =. Layer two on top of layer one: II. Repeat with alternating the layers like this at the ends, it will help keep the pile from capsizing like it did at 16:50. Stack your wood as normal between the crosshatched ends. Hope this helps in the future!
I was thinking that too...lol..plus, being someone who only has wood to heat the house, don't stack up against any building; no air circulation and can damage the house (if it's wooden like my house is).
Thank you so much for sharing this video and all of your calming videos. I am at home from work sick with a cold and I really do appreciate being able to watch this video. Your videos are so soothing and calming. I love the way you bring nature into the house, I will be trying to make your craft as soon as I am feeling better. It is beautiful and I am sure it smells so good.
So happy for a new vlog, it's like a breath of fresh mountain air each time. Sorry to hear you were sick again, bad timing, but glad you are better now and prepared with your homemade syrup. I hope you find the inspiration to make many more vlogs this season, they bring so much peace and cheer to all of us, but only as much as you feel energized to do that is. Be well and have a wonderful time!
you shouldn't stack firewood on the ground, put something under like cinder blocks, also you don't have much of a under hang you should put a tarp over the wood. it'll keep the wood longer.
Thank you for this beautiful video... I need your recipes though, everything you make looks so good... I wish you a beautiful day, and look forward to your next video..
You take away all of my anxiety with your voice. I'm so glad you are feeling better. I used to live in Colorado with a fireplace and know exactly how it sounds and smells. Wishing you the best. Stay well and cozy. Blessed be❣
Upstate New Yorker here. A good rule of thumb is about 3 cords of wood per 1000 square foot area. That should be enough to last you until the end of the season.
I love watching your videos to help me ease into my morning. Everyone around me seems to need a JOLT of loud and exciting in the mornings and then go, go, go, all day but that is so jarring to me.
there is an easier way to stack the ends of the pile, so it doesn't fall. I lived on the mountain in Oregon for many years and we had to stack 8 to 10 cords of wood per year. When you get to the end reverse the direction of wood every other time. I have been told its the German way of stacking. This way you keep a rectangle and not end up with a pyramid, or it falling down. hope this helps.
Have you ever considered compressed wood products for times when your wood supply just needs to stretch a little bit? North Idaho Energy Logs are reliably my favorite, plus they're local-ish.
Hi Annie, love this. Here's hoping it'll keep you through this winter. Maybe between the cabin and the apartment it will stretch. Hope you're doing really well in all facets of life, darn that cold. Sending love. Dang Grimmy's so big. Hug them both for me.
Been missing you. I have benifited greatly from your posts. You speak to us in a way that means so much. Please post when your ready. No pressure. We will be here... Hugs and kisses...
As you stacked the wood, the thought came to mind if your lady friend was still in the picture....... and then you answered the question. I hope your well in the winter months to come.
Your hair looks so cute like that.🙂 and what kind of pants are you wearing and where did you find them? (The pair at the beginning of your video. I love them. Love that cottage too.
May I suggest, for your wood stacking. A good pair of heavy-duty work gloves. Your hands will thank you! I love the beautiful but simple greenery ornamentation. I can't remember your white dogs name. I always refer to him as Ghost. 🥰
Firewood adds incredible coziness to the yard. We have electric heaters. So I don't need to collect firewood. I hope one day I will have a house with a big yard and a fireplace.

Anna, this is going to sound totally mental, I know. But please hear me out. The moment I saw Grim I suddenly got a horrible feeling, the first thing that crossed my mind was "omg he's going to die so young!" When I see Hazel alone I don't feel anything bad. But every time I see him, it's as if all the sadness in the world has suddenly gathered. And every time that feeling gets stronger. In this video, when I saw it, I felt physical pain. I can't explain, I don't even understand what's going on. I tried to convince myself that I was imagining it and that it was just a coincidence, but now I can't fight that feeling anymore. I'm a veterinarian and I feel quite well when an animal is suffering. And it was always only live, never via video. But there is something different about him. He looks perfectly healthy to me, but I can't shake this horrible feeling that you're going to be without him. I know how expensive vets are, and how long you have to wait for an appointment, but please, if you haven't recently, take him to a check up. Discuss whether it might be useful to do a gastropexy, check the basic blood tests. I don't want to scare you, or send bad vibes, encourage you to spend money or anything like that. And I fought for a long time not to say anything to you. But I would never forgive myself if something happened to him without me saying anything. The last thing I want is for you to find yourself in a storm with him sick, with no help.
I know that is not your video style, but I would really love to see a bit of your wardrobe. I love your style, and I love those skirts of yours, but they appear mostly the half up part in the camera. I wish I could see all of them, and get inspired to change a little of the way I dress up.

Consider a barrier between the house and your wood, elevated a bit off ground for air. Too close encourages rot , bugs, mice, etc. Fyi.
