    Patti Lupone once said that the problem with musical films is that they are always made by people who have never been involved in the making of a play/musical on stage so they can't translate from one medium to another. And I believe that's why Tick Tick Boom is so great, it was made by theatre people.

    • @mcwyman7928
      @mcwyman7928 2 года назад +23

      But it can also go the other way. For example, the movie adaptation of The Producers because it was directed by the same director who did the stage show and she had no idea how to translate the show between mediums.

    • @StrayBats
      @StrayBats 2 года назад +12

      @@mcwyman7928 This is the key. Many movie musicals since would suffer from just “lifting” stage choreography for the screen and didn’t really push itself. In the Heights has numbers that really take advantage of the film medium, but Tick, Tick… Boom is the next evolution of this marriage of mediums and does it really well because it wasn’t afraid of using the film medium to elevate the music. For example, having “Therapy” jump between Jon and Susan’s argument to his performance with Karessa is alway a stand out number because it not only juxtaposes a fun country bop with an agonizing argument/break-up but it highlights Susan’s points effectively: Jon couldn’t compromise, he always needs to put his music first, so even at the cost of their own relationship he’ll still find a way to make his music out of it (with the one uplifting note in retrospect being that this means even the failure of Superbia wouldn’t stop Jon from writing music, even if the failure itself-like his break-up with Susan-was soul crushing).
      And then there’s the use of special effects to really accentuate the way musical numbers inspires us to engage with our imagination (like seeing beyond the stage props and costumes). “Swimming” is the best example of this, where the film uses chaotic cuts between Jon swimming and showing us the things he sees when he comes up for air, the timing so frenetic you can feel the impact of his strokes as the beat picks up. And he floats just as the song slows down and the pool is transformed into a manuscript and the words he noted down start floating to the screen all around. The most impressive thing here is that the film sets this up in a way where we already have an expectation for it, and it doesn’t feel like it’s a Disney Acid Trip Sequence (itself animations way of appropriately translating musical numbers to the medium-if sometimes against a logical thread) or jumping the shark. Many of the previous numbers do this because they always cut between 2 distinct settings (like the stage show or settings shot specifically to fit the number, like “No More”). “Sunday” is the one that really takes it up a level as it happens in the moment, which is how “Swimming” is also presented.
      There’s so much more to say about this, but I’m already close to writing a short essay. Sorry!

    Definitely for me I think one of the biggest things about why it went right is that Lin’s direction came from such an authentic place. He saw this musical and realized he wanted to write musicals for a living, he had a Tony award winning musical before he was 30, PLAYED Jonathan in this musical, and went through the same damn struggles. Honestly I think Lin’s got a real talent for directing, and this may be my favorite work of his PERIOD.

    Also, I knew Andrew was an amazing actor, but he outdid himself in this. Truly spectacular and well-rounded performance, he deserves the world
    And with Lin, it was that he understood the source material, theater and film enough to get the exact balance of the three of them

    It was the best movie musical I've seen in more than a decade, for all the reasons you mentioned. Is it for everybody? Probably not, but it is a love letter to all those artists that struggle with the idea of never being heard. And the fact that we ended up celebrating the legacy of a man who was able to mentor nearly three generations of artists around the same time as this movie premiered only showcased this fact all the more. ( I love fact that it's really Stephen Sondheim on that voicemail recording). I hope they get all the awards. Because they deserve every one.

    that's why Lin is consistent. it's his understanding and internalizing his lack of knowledge and how to find those who know to guide him. he's said this about Hamilton many times, and now Tik Tik Boom.

Originally Whitford had recorded it, but Sondheim wasn't satisfied with the dialogue, so he rewrote it and recorded it for Lin in case Whitford was not available to do it. Not just because of his performance and the fact could SING (the soundtrack is also on repeat for me lol), but the story just really resonated with me about how it's all about failure and feeling lost. It combined the best of film and musical seamlessly. It's made me very interested in the real Jon Larson, which I think is a good thing for a film celebrating him, because it was about his lowest parts and alluded that his masterpiece was ahead of him. Really smart storytelling and directing!

    I always knew Lin was the perfect (maybe the *only* ) person to direct this movie, but man, even with my high expectations it still blew me away!
    It feels like such an incredible gift, honestly, that this little, pretty under-the-radar show that's meant so much to me for yeeears and years ever got made at all, but especially that it got made with such deep love and care by one of the people probably most impacted by Jonathan's work. But even though I think his deep connection with the work is the backbone of it all, I also just think Lin is really freaking fantastic at musical story telling, and it does make sense that that would translate into his technical ability in directing as much as it does in his writing.
    And on another note, I hope TTB introduces a lot of new people to RENT as well! I feel like a lot of young people today might not realize just how game changing RENT was - so much of what seems standard for Broadway now, is a standard very largely because RENT happened. I'm not an expert on Broadway history, so it's possible I have a bias toward Jonathan's work since it was what got *me* so deeply invested in musical theater haha, but it really does feel like, while there had been excellent and highly successful rock/modern musicals before that (Hair probably being the main one), RENT was that cultural shift that made it the *norm* . And it makes me so happy that this gorgeous movie exists as a love letter to Jonathan's legacy, and to the craft overall :)

      I thought she was alright, but compared to every other incredible performance in the movie, hers felt subpar. I did think her performance in Come to Your Senses was her best in the movie, but I couldn’t help wanting to just see Susan sing the whole thing.

    I felt like this movie was made specifically for me! I've loved this show (and Rent!) since middle school and Lin, Andrew, Robin, Vanessa and the whole cast did something truly special. It made me fall in love with theatre again and even got me inspired to finish some old writing projects I've. had going for years now. I love them all fo this. Thank you Jonathan Larson.

I absolutely agree with your assessment of it and the details you pointed out. I feel like it just hit the sweet spot of deep emotion and passion for people in general, but for creatives especially. I was hit hard by it and I absolutely cannot get enough. This is one of the best movie musicals I have ever seen. There are so many moments that I just keep coming back to that bring joy and also heartbreak. Truly a piece of artwork.

    I saw somewhere that Lin said that he filled Sunday with so many cameos because he wanted it to be Jonathon's dream choir or something similar and it made the cameos go from a novelty to something special to me.

    • @MrMoogey
      @MrMoogey 2 года назад +1

      To add to this and there’s a point to all of it, there’s the story of Bernadette Peter in this movie. It was something like, because she originated Dot in Sunday in the Park with George, and wanted to partake in this movie, she went and sought out Sondheim’s permission because of how close they were to the original material. He said go for it and she was happy to do it, with Garfield’s Larson bringing her in close to his heart vs George pushing her away.
      I feel like LMM and Larson to an extent, showed the upmost respect towards Broadway and all the stars that that was greatly reciprocated by everybody playing a role in some form. It’s like they all wanted to show their own respect to Larson and his work. It just made it even more special because, as we know, majority of those actors rarely if ever take part in something like this unless they’re well highlighted. Just a great tribute to Larson. You don’t have to like Rent to know the impact it had putting Bway on a totally different path than it had been since like, the early 80s.

    The difference between TTB and other movie musicals is that it finds clever and naturalistic ways to introduce the songs, by firstly having them be literally performed on stage, and then sung in settings where it feels “normal” (eg at the party where the attendees sing with Jon on piano), before staging them as obviously fantasy pieces (Sunday). This overcomes the issue in most movie musicals when characters seem to randomly break into song, and it means that when that does happen later on, the audience is used to songs appearing out of nowhere and it doesn’t jar or feel contrived like it sadly often does in movies (as opposed to on stage where the audience has a higher level of suspension of disbelief). This feels to me to be a deliberate choice and shows a really good understanding of the difficulty of putting musicals on screen from Lin Manuel Miranda, and is really encouraging in respect what he might be able to achieve on screen.

    The thing that makes tick tick BOOM work is that the folks behind the camera didn't try to take the musical and plop it onto film without changing anything. They translated the energy of live performance by using visual storytelling techniques that only work in cinema.

    I’ve always had the desire to write something that would change the world but I never knew what. I’ve had countless ideas but nothing that I would dare to show to others. When I first saw Hamilton I was inspired to try to write a musical, but I had absolutely no idea what it would be about. The gears in my head started turning the instant I saw Tick, Tick… Boom! And while in the shower Sunday night listening to 30/90 on a loop thinking about the words “write about what you know”, inspiration struck. Feel free to pin this comment so 10 years down the road we can come back to this and see where this journey started

    I am a 24 year old man who watched it alone on my computer at like 3am and I was crying for a majority of the film. Openly sobbing. The message was so clear and well spoken throughout the film. Movie musicals especially as of late have had missteps and I think the majority come from the joy of spectacle. The reason why musical theatre and broadway is so powerful is because of the messages you can deliver and the emotions that can be expressed in only this unique medium. Movie musicals tend to forget this and simply take a stage show and use film as a vehicle to amplify the showmanship when spectacle is so rarely the point in the first place. There are plenty of visual effects in Tick Tick Boom but they always service the story and the messages that are being told, and enhance the pacing, but are never interested in simply getting a "wow" from the viewing audience. Also Andrew Garfield is an unbelievable talent and is one of the most believable performers working today, which is essential to a film like this. It isn't about getting big names with decent singing voices, you need someone who connects with the material and will do it justice to get the script to leap off the page and be displayed on your screen. Overall a phenomenal movie and my wife refuses to watch it because I cried too much and she said that she isn't able to handle that level of emotion right now so the battle to convince her begins. I love your review!

    This movie was so good! I think it’s really helped by how it’s really consistent and never loses focus. The performance/narration bits were super effective and I think it makes a big difference that there was a mix between songs performed in the moment and songs performed on stage. I love how after seeing Renee Elise Goldsberry and Phillipa Soo in the diner scene I was like “this room must be full of Broadway stars” and I was totally right. I don’t really get the impression that this movie has been super popular but it really should be. It’s so much better than any other movie musical I’ve seen in the last couple years.

    It was so much better than I was afraid of. I get the feeling LMM was as frustrated by the Rent movie as I was, and determined to not make any of the same mistakes - like, say, _completely ignoring all the points where the show tells you exactly how to film it_ - and holy crap that worked.
    I love how there are so many references crammed in that if you don't recognise, you won't even know they are references.
    I will always rather see a great actor who can convince you they can sing than a great singer who's more wooden than the set. This film did test that a bit, though. There are noticeable moments when Garfield not being able to sing a line as written really did negatively impact the songs - "Why" especially. The two verses set the stage for the bridge, which absolutely rips your heart out, then the third verse gently brings you down again. Cutting the bridge offended me into all caps in my notes.
    The visualisations were wonderful. Especially the ones in the pool.
    I could have done without the second iteration of "Come To Your Senses" over the credits. There were plenty of songs that didn't make it into the movie, why was there any need to repeat one? Could have stuck "See Her Smile" in there, or the full version of "LCD Readout".
    There's such a meta juxtaposition between this movie and "It's A Sin", for me. Obviously only one of them is a musical, one is set in London and the other New York, one is all about AIDS and the other only includes it as a single strand of the plot; but in an odd way, "Tick, Tick... BOOM" is what "It's A Sin" kept(entirely deliberately, I'm sure) trying to be, what its characters deserved, but it kept being forcibly ripped away from. They would make interesting companion pieces, I think.
