Hi Rick so i looked at this video again and am wondering why are you zeroing out the first part of the external flash drive? Arent we supposed to clear flash (byte value =oxff) before writing to it? Sorry for this stupid question!

This being an old video not sure if anyone will answer. I had to reinstall os on a mid2012 macbook pro to fix os corruption. In the jnternet recovery mode i changed the internal hard drive to apfs (since apple suggested that for high sierra and above) the reinstallation failed with logs showing it did not like apfs format so i used disk utility to format the hd back to extended journaled. Thats where the process failed with error message waiting for partions to activate. And ever sjnce its in an unmounted state. How can i mount to back and change the format back to extended journaled? I do not have another laptop that i can connect to. Would appreciate if someone helped

I'm wondering if the hard drive is bad. Another thing to consider is that these models are prone to having problems with the hard drive cable. They can cause weird issues. Replacing them seems to fix the problem. I have a video on it here: ruclips.net/video/XbEiodR9igQ/видео.html It might be more likely that the cable is the problem than the hard drive. Could be both.

@@Rickmakes thank you so much for such a quick response. If it is indeed a hardware failure then I have to get some professional help. Though this is an old mac I hardly used it (mostly light surfing and few RUclips videos so there is no stressing of the harddrive with lots of read/write). But yes a faulty hw can act up anytime. I probably destroyed a completely functional mac due to my ignorance of computers, never had any issues but since I did nor turn it on most of the time whenever I did it would be very slow (running all those background processes) and I assumed the os was corrupted and created all this mess. It's only now that I came to know that I should put macs to sleep and not shut off for spotlight and other bkgrnd processes to finish their tasks. But too late! I will check your suggested link and once again thank you so very much for replying.

@shikhab2250 and @Rickmakes Im sorry, to ask you this but did you got that fixed. Because i have 2012 mb pro and i have issues when i install the MacOs in my new ssd that formated APFS the installation is failed and show a notification “Could not create a preboot volume for
APFS install.” So i tried to change the internal ssd that already formatted to be APFS to changed into extended Journal but it wouldn’t let me and it showed “Erase process has failed. Click Done to continue.” So I don’t have the second device either so i bring the mbpro to service and they told me that the cable is fine. My question for you is what should i do now, should I tried to install the mb pro with extended journal format but I’m afraid that i will destroy this brand new ssd 😢😢😢

@@MrFury-qy9ro My problem never got resolved but in your case since it's a new ssd it should be formatted to apfs since this format makes the access when the drive is solid state more efficient for any os that's high sierra or higher

Do you have administrator privileges on the Mac? If you go to System Preferences > User & Groups, you should see "Admin" under your name.
