    DID YOU SENSE MY NEED AND URGENCY FOR A VIDEO ABOUT PASTELS?!
    Keep going. You got this. You bring out the best things about pastels.

  • @kvr8286
    @kvr8286 5 лет назад +26

    Some helpful beginner tips on pastels that I've learned or were shared in my early days:
    1) Work dark to light;
    2) Work soft to hard;
    3) Never never NEVER spray fix your final painting, it will change the colors! (Unless you're like Silke Shumann and want to. I don't like the color changes myself and I'm careful with my finished pieces. Also, I'm not an expert, nor a professional, I just like the medium a lot and have worked in it for almost 20 years. But if you want to spray fix your pieces then you do you.)
    3) You can fill the tooth of the paper so work in light layers and don't futz around too much;
    4) Work on medium-dark to dark papers or do an underpainting on lighter papers
    6) Try UArt paper (it's basically art-grade, archival sand paper) :-D
    7) Work on a near vertical easel so the dust drops down and off the piece
    8) Use 2" wide tape to help capture the pastel dust at the bottom of your easel.
    Lol, I should just make a video of this cause that last one is hard to describe... :-P
    Also, Mi-Teintes paper has a more textured side and a much smoother side, you were working on the textured side. You'll learn to distinguish between them on sight but in the meantime swatch a color on both sides to see the difference.
    Great bird, BTW, turned out very nice.

    • @silkeschumann7261
      @silkeschumann7261 5 лет назад +7

      On 3) Simply keep in mind that it will be darker after the fixative is sprayed on and choose your colors accordingly. Having the pastel image preserved with a fixative is a good thing. You can keep it under glass but every time you move or not keep the work in a frame under glass it is at risk and having a beautiful finished work ruined by smudge or due to improper storage dulled because the dust is mixed, is worse than a simple color shift due to a few layers of archival fixative.

    • @kvr8286
      @kvr8286 5 лет назад

      @@silkeschumann7261 Ultimately the matter of spray fixing is a personal choice but I have never heard, myself, of a professional pastel artist who spray-fixes their final pieces, tho some use it in their process on under layers and most other amateur pastel artists I know or follow don't either.
      Pastel is an inherently delicate medium that needs to be handled with care regardless of whether it's fixed or unfixed. I use glassine over unframed pieces (most of my 16x20+ paintings are unframed) and they have suffered no damage in storage. Framing pastels is a whole topic unto itself and there are ways to ensure that no damage comes to the piece and no dust gets on mats, etc.
      For me there is simply no way to preserve the color and vibrancy of a pastel with a spray fixative. But you do you :)

    • @silkeschumann7261
      @silkeschumann7261 5 лет назад +4

      @@kvr8286
      Yes you're right it is personal preference. I just find your "never, never, NEVER" inappropriate since there are some very good archival fixative sprays on the market and they help to keep the pastel piece in pristine condition despite suboptimal handling. Though as I said you need to factor in a predictable color shift with the initial application. You don't drown the piece in fixative. As with everything else in art it is the know how that makes the difference.
      You are an artist with experience who is well aware about the delicate nature of pastel. Once you sell the piece you pass it on to people who don't know this and even if they do, you can't expect that every one who may handle the work in the future does.
      Last but not least I know professional artist who use archival fixative with their pastel works. They even publish youTube videos on how to apply fixative to pastel work to keep the color shift to a minimum and the protection sufficient.

    • @kvr8286
      @kvr8286 5 лет назад

      @@silkeschumann7261 It's not inappropriate, it's the opinion of a person who dislikes spray fixative for the reason stated. I'm perfectly within my rights to advocate for my preference and you're perfectly within your rights to advocate for yours.

      @@kvr8286 You gave advice as "Expert" and as such gave the impression, that a pastel piece is completely destroyed, when it is not if you know what you're doing, see video from a pastel artist. Geez? Rights?! You did exercise your right and met opposition that is the nature of an open comment. Your so strongly voiced opinion lacks substance and is apparently prejudiced. If you hadn't iterated and worse shouted I might have let it stand. But since you got loud, I felt a second opinion was called for.

What should we tackle in the final installment of this mini series next time? Let me know what you think!

      Airbrushing suddenly popped into my mind for some reason - it was always so intriguing for me, but I'd assume you'd need some specific equipment that probably won't be cheap. Also, how about Digital Painting? Not really my jam personally, I'm more of 'hands on' person when it comes to are, so the digital thing doesn't appeal to me that much, but it's quite popular, and maybe you yourself will find it interesting to explore.

    I’m kinda interested in pastels but all my attempts so far were super messy and my desk is white, so cleanup was a nightmare! Maybe one day I’ll give it another go, with the sanded paper, maybe that will help with all the dust!
    I’m really enjoying this series! I think some mixed media would be nice for the next video. I’m also not patient enough to do colour pencil only pieces, they just take so much time! I do use colour pencil all the time on top of watercolour though. I used to be a lot more purist and wouldn’t mix media, but colour pencils are just great for adding details, especially to create textures in animal furs or for feathers. I think they would go really well with your style!

    I was wondering about your certain sensitivity to textures. It's actually really interesting to hear from someone having a similar problem and how it works for them! I personally don't really like handling stuff like pastels and charcoal because the texture of it as well as stuff like certain textured paper forms instantly makes my hands clammy and makes me hyperaware of everything i feel, like a mild, localised sensory overload. I'll see if your mentality will help me when i try out these mediums, since it's been a long time since i've tried them and i've been curious especially about picking up charcoal again. You can get a variety of colors in one set for a decent price. These are sold at Michael's. Its mostly colors you would use when drawing a face but I used them to draw a Flamingo drawing and they worked pretty good.

    I love how soft this medium as a whole is, because I think that'll help me with my lefty tendency to get hand cramps - but then again I never really got into them, because I'm already so so sooo messy when painting or drawing as is, so I never really got soft pastels and basically never use the very limited amount of pastel pencils I got ^^' I plan to do that in the future though and have been eying a set of Koh-I-Noor Gioconda pencils for the past month or so - I just lack the time to actually be creative at the moment -.-

    It's funny you mention finding it daunting to fill large areas with colored pencil...I believe some colored pencil artists actually use PanPastels to fill large areas as either an underpainting or for the background, and then go in with details on top. (I imagine you might just need to use a workable fixative between the pastels and pencils? Idk.) You can also use watercolor the same way, or you can blend out large swaths of more loose pencil with Brush and Pencil's powder blender. Might not make you love colored pencil, but it's one way to make the large areas go a lot faster.

Every time I've used pastel I felt like things wouldn't stop lifting and blended wrong, and don't get me started on oil pastel (don't, really, I can't stand them XD). Maybe pastel pencils would work out better since I mostly use pencil crayon anyways, or maybe I'd just be too used to regular pencils and be way too biased XD.

I love to use clairefontaine pastelmat paper, with this paper I get way lesser of a mess! Pastels became one of my favorite dry mediums to work with after trying them out in college way back when. I absolutely agree with you that being able to cover larger areas is so much more freeing compared to using pencils (which are still among my favorites to use, just not for full pieces) Truth be told this is the first time I've seen someone apply them using applicators specifically for pastels. In our classes we actually found using paint brushes was a pretty good way to spread and blend the pigments around. I'll be looking into those applicators when I feel like going back to pastels ^^

    I'm struggling so hard to find my medium. I did some acrylic paintings, but even though people said they came out great, I didn't like using paint. I also did some graphite drawings and they came out great, but I really need color in my life.
    Next I tried colored pencils and was happy to have color in my life. This was recently, and I haven't done many, and haven't been brave enough yet to try doing portraits with colored pencils.
    But the thing about colored pencils is that they seemed to actually take longer than graphite, so even though I was happy to have color in my life, I got tired of how extremely long it takes to do a drawing (I like working on big paper, 14x17).
    Not only that but I think that using color on portraits means that I should understand a little about color theory. Creating shadows with color is a lot different than using graphite.
    Color theory aside, I really really really wanted to like pastels because it looks like it goes so much faster. But I don't think I'd like not being able to get the finest of details. I don't like chalky mess and I don't like the way they feel. But mostly I don't think I can do art that is suggestive rather than detailed.
    So I don't know what to do. Drawing details takes a lot of time and study and I need to break it up a little by doing some art that is more free flowing and quicker. So far that reason I wish maybe I could learn how to do art like this that isn't detailed.
    I'm about to get some pan pastels, and see if I can use them for a background on a color pencil portrait I'm about to start. I'm stepping up paper size to a whopping 18x24, and I feel like if I have to color all that background in using color pencils, I will scream.
    Maybe I need to get some pastels and just try to do art that is less detailed so I can have quick fun things to do to break up the monotony of doing fine detail drawings. I wish I had someone here in person who could work with me and teach me.

    Great job! I love the part where you begin adding in the feathers, it definitely has a soft painterly look to it :) I personally have a hard time with chalk pastels in general, though admittedly I've never tried the pans. The scratchy feeling/sound of running the pencils or sticks across rough paper sets my teeth on edge (this includes charcoal as well). It's funny how certain sensations can make one person cringe, while another can find it calming. I keep trying charcoal and telling myself to get over it, but it's rough (pun? lol). I actually love colored pencils, my only frustration with them is that I like the color to be really saturated, but I like very smooth lines with no texture, and that combination can be hard to achieve with either soft or hard leaded pencils. Oh, but I completely agree about acrylics... I don't enjoy using them at all. There's something kind of unromantic to me about painting with plastic, and though I know there are artists who do amazing things with acrylics, I just can't enjoy the process in the same way I do watercolors or gouache. Aesthetics aside, there's something nice about being able to just wipe off your palette with a wet paper towel :) Anyway, though I'm probably never going to try pastels again, it's nice to know more about them so that I can appreciate the process. Thank you for the video!

    While I love this video, watching you rub it in with your fingers gives me a physical 'nails on a chalkboard' shiver..... That is the one reason I have never attempted pastels yet.... the feel of chalk just.... *shudders*

      I want to shout from the roof tops that drawing with pastels is *nothing* like chalkboard chalk. It makes me so sad to see so many people scared off of the medium because of that comparision. Rubbing these into paper are soooo smooth. If there was sound in the video, it would sound like my finger sliding more smoothly across the paper than if it was bare. I don't mean this in a negative way toward your comment specifically, there's just SO many people saying that they hate the texture when they're not the same experience :(

      @@InLiquidColor No, no! I do not think that is a remotely negative comment at all.
      We all get these pre-concieved ideas of things... and especially when these are linked to a negative feeling they are often hard to get past.

But imma stick with it. I'm still on the peach part, so wish me luck. Does anyone else have the same issue? I can't stand using chalk or touching flour, the texture just really bothers me. Love soft pastels, but the messiness and possible health implication scare me off a bit, why not try oil pastels? • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  5 лет назад +1

      That is true, though you could wear a mask if the dust is concerning! I've never gravitated towards oil pastel on their own, but I used to teach oil pastel and watercolor lessons in my classrooms and loved that! It may be worth looking into :)

      Thanks. True there are precautions you can take to minimize health concerns but I guess I like to not worry about that kind of stuff, guess I've been spoiled by watercolor and graphite. Plus I like to have a cup of coffee/tea next to my work area and so much dust nearby/on hands would make me think twice about that. Although I love the look of soft pastels, practically speaking I think oil pastel is probably better for me

    one thing no one ever talks about is how horrible acr,lic paints are for the ground water. Acrylic is pigment suspened in plastic. The left over paint water goes down the drain putting microplastic into the sewer system. Most microplastic never gets filtered out. I think that even oilpaint used with natural turpentine is less harsh on the environment than acrylic paint. And now there is watersoluable oil paint. The oil ist natural linseed oil..I have avoided acrylic because of that alone so far. and the only bottle I ever tried I did not enjoy and ended up giving it a school.

    Pastels are #1 and watercolor #2.
    Color pencils take too long, oils have too much cleanup and take long to dry, acrylic just looks amateurish unless you’re extremely skilled at it.
