Being in Canada, you have to be financially intelligent. In Jamaica, I can easily pick anything off a tree and have meals for months without buying food. Also, in Jamaica, we don't have to use daycare...I could easily ask a trusted friend or family member to watch my kids. I didn't need a credit history to buy my home...things are just easier and I never thought of being bankrupt. In CANADA, that's another story. You have to be smart else you will suffer. Canada is a beautiful place but you can easily be BROKE!

Please share tips on how to work smart in Canada. I hear it a lot but no one says how. Please help a sister with information.
The 1st thing I did as early as 2018, I started to watch various RUclipsrs who have already migrated to Canada. At that time, I didn't even know how I was gonna get here. By the time I reach here, not long ago, I already knew the questions to asked when I was opening my bank accounts and getting a credit card. I also knew that credit check could reduce my credit score. All this I learnt from watching Marina and a few others. Another thing was that I changed my mindset that it would be a bed of roses. I came here understanding I had to work twice as hard- not necessarily working 2 jobs lol but being intentional. I also learnt about value village lol... the 1st clothes store I went. Canada is beautiful, have opportunities and may give you that strong passport but it takes a strong mindset. If I wasn't prepared, believe me, I would have returned home almost 2 weeks after landed. It can be depressing and daunting when you are job hunting and people asking you if you on work permit or PR lol... I've been driving since 2012 and came here and basically have to go through a process to continue driving here... You will also have to decide whether you can afford Airbnb or stay with someone... none of the options is without its own challenges... I could go on and on... but my bottom line is, coming here, one has to be humble and meticulous. Oh another thing, after just 2 weeks, I was almost scammed... people may call your phone pretending to be a bank. Now being a Jamaican I'm not easily scammed but these people are so smart and sent an email looking like it's from my bank, then called me to verify😂... I was just about to when I remember this RUclipsr from Ontario- I keep forgetting her name, shared something on her channel smh. When I called the bank... wasn't them and they have been hacked lol. Listen, Canada is nice but be prepared. 😅❤

Thanks for the information ma but I don't agree with the statement that is easier to be broke in Canada than in Nigeria... maybe u can say this years back but not now .....is just that Canada has a very high standard of living when compared to Nigeria,i tell you, you have to been doing well for u to maintain the kind of standard of living in Canada here in Nigeria,let me start from rent in Nigeria,here in Benin City where i live,the average rent for a year is 300k for a room and a palour, imagine a family man earning 50k a month which will be 600k annually, remove 300k from 600k for rent then there will be 300k left, trust me a family of three can't live of 300k annually..a pot of soup now is 3 to 4k on an average now.a bag of rice is roughly 63k now and that can't last for a year for a family of three,u will still pay school fees which has gone try the roof the average school in my area is 35k per term for primary school,I can go on and on ma,I wonder how it even possible to compare Nigeria to Canada.. those ppl that u said a spraying dollars,ask them how they got the money,I am not saying rich ppl in Nigeria are criminals but try to find out u will hear so many things these ppl are doing to make money,see if u decide not to get your hands dirty here just prepare your self to suffer, bcoz there's a higher chances of u living in poverty...I will tell u is easier to start a business in Canada than in Nigeria when it come to funds because u can easily access a loan, there's one woman in my area who is carry bread on her head every morning to supply to customers with pregnancy just to feed her self, husband and children,her husband is partially blind ,so u wanna tell me if someone offer to borrow that woman money to start a business she won't grab it??
Please Nigeria is casted now,so don't compare Nigeria with Canada at all....ppl dey live on gbese for years for Nigeria too o, abeg who dey dash person money for Nigeria abeg tell me make i go meet am too to collect my own oo,ppl dey suffer o for Nigeria o, those ppl way dey do all kind of things for Facebook to get views u think say na their clear eyes,na money them dey find oo...my take is if we Carry the hustling spirit we have here in Nigeria to Canada,there no how we won't make it there....
I compared both countries on specific parameters and i still maintain that your chances of survival in Nigeria without money is still better than Canada. Bottom line, let everybody work and have something to fall back on.

In America our friends and family will give money or gift cards for a Weddings, Anniversaries, College graduations, etc. So maybe it is because I have always been a working class black American. But I have Mexian, White and Asian friends and they all do it.

I live in Nigeria and I agree. While the economy here is terrible and a lot of people are broke it’s still easier to be broke abroad. Here I can always call a friend or a family member to house me for a while or send me some cash but this would be difficult in a country like Canada.

Hi Marina, I was informed upon arrival that there are policies that guide tenants and that landlords can not take out a tenant even when they are unable to pay rent hence landlords are always demanding tenants especially new comers pay like 6months rent before hand.
Truly you can easily go into debt in Canada than Nigeria
This was not the case, say 8 years ago. This is something recent because housing is becoming a problem, and landlords do not want people to just leave in their houses and then up and leave. At least if they charge them 6 months in advance, they have nothing to lose if the tenant decides to leave in 4 months.

The housing crisis is making it tougher for landlords to trust their houses to newcomers. A lot of the tenancy laws appear to favour tenants so landlords do what they can to make sure they dont run at a loss.

There is no few cash in Nigeria. The standard of living is very low in Nigeria and many developing countries. Most developed countries works on credit to so that the poor and middle class can afford the most basic things.
There is actually more free cash in Nigeria from my experience.

People are lawless in Nigeria including leaders. In any system where rules are not obeyed, it is an invitation to chaos and anarchy. In the advanced countries, knowledge is power and you need deep rooted knowledge and understanding to survive.
People still disobey rules even in the advanced countries. As for Nigeria, remember that in a state of lawlessness, it could be an offence too be law abiding.

In the advanced countries only a very few disobeying the rules and there are systems-in place to identify them and apply consequence management. This is unlike a place like Nigeria where it fashionable to disobey the rules with reckless abandon.

Sist Nigeria broke cannot be compared to that of those living in Canada, UK etc. Canada is well organised and ready for the people but Nigeria on the contrary is a big joke. People are really suffering here. I can say just 5% of the citizens are living well aside the politicians. So broke in Nigeria is the real deal
The difference is, in Nigeria if you're broke and have no way to survive in Nigeria you have the option to go back the the village in a final resort. Also, many Nigerians are very generous and are willing to offer support. In the West, it's not so. For example, in the US, you have to be a citizen to get any government assistance. If you're a permanent resident, you cannot get government benefits.
I dont totally agree. Canada isn't as organized as you think. If not, we will not be having the kind of crisis that we are seeing in the news. The chances of survival as a broke person in Nigeria is still better than a broke person in Canada. The access to cash is different for both people in my opinion.

Paying rent yearly sounds weird. Do they also pay mortgage yearly in Nigeria?
Most buy their homes outright in Nigeria. Mortgage interest rate is 20%, so it's unrealistic to take out a mortgage.
We even pay two years advance for rent here in Ghana
Some people pay up to 2 years rent in advance. Feels weird now thinking about it.
We dont do mortgages in nigeria. You own your house outright.
The mortgage am paying in Canada for two bedrooms can build two big mighty, solid concrete houses back home. There is the good and bad in every country, but we need for people to understand that Canada is not a bed of roses so as to come prepared.

The reason why I think you may not be as broke here as in Nigeria is because , as a salary earner in Nigeria, govt may not pay salary for 3 months and counting. That can really put you on financial set back. But here, I know my money will come every two weeks and it helps me to plan better.
It depends on one's definition of rich.
This has to be done on an individual basis. Do your self introspection and research for which country would help you live your rich life.
My rich life is self actualisation and travel. Living abroad gives me this opportunity
For an acquaintance of mine, being able to owe someone and no one disturbs him, being able to sleep with a girl he picks on the road and just buy her catfish pepper soup and being called Odogwu by his gateman, junior colleagues at work is his idea of a rich life . Living abroad is thus not an option, people here would call him by his name😅, even kids. Girls would not hop into his car and won't act impressed by his money or be impressed by him buying them a drink, and of course he can't owe his bills and get away with it.
