Godly writing how desperate Ellie was looking for an answer, losing herself in the process but that one final thought she had of Joel saved her, and reminded her why he wanted her to go on living. Brilliant Brilliant game
I'm just gonna leave this here since it seems you're like me who didn't want Abby to die. This is just an opinion some of them are from my own thoughts the others are from different analysis comments from various Ellie vs Abby Final Fight videos:
When Ellie sees Abby in her slaved, tortured, and malnourished state, Ellie decides it does not feel right to fight. In addition to the fact that Ellie went to California not because of revenge, but because of her PTSD (there's an interview with Neil Druckman about this). As Ellie witnesses how Abby runs straight to Lev to save him and to comfort him "I got you, I got you", Ellie wonders if this is how Joel must have looked like when he was saving her at the hospital, judging by her facial expression. Abby tells her "There are boats this way" instead of ignoring her or threatening her, so Ellie suspects that Abby's vengeance and hatred towards Ellie, Tommy, and especially Joel are gone.
However, when Ellie sees blood she has the flashback of Joel and she cannot bring herself to let Abby go. One should note that Ellie says "I can't let you leave" and the tone is very desperate. If Ellie wanted revenge, she would have immobilized Abby by shooting her in the leg or would have said something more violent like "You're dying here, don't think it's going to be slow". Ellie's PTSD and guilt are slaving Ellie to fight. Since Abby already let all the maliciousness go, she refuses to fight Ellie. Even in the interview with Laura Bailey, she said Abby understood how Ellie felt. My take is that Abby would have let Ellie to kill her. On the contrary to what Abby suspects, Ellie is not seeking revenge; Ellie is looking for a way to escape her PTSD. Thus, Ellie threatens to kill Lev because she is so desperate.
Ellie fights Abby and barely manages to overpower her. As Ellie drowns Abby, Ellie has the flashback since the first time Ellie has killed someone, it was to save Joel from "drowning". That's why Ellie is crying. She is becoming the same person who is killing Joel. I still don't have a clear idea what triggered Ellie to have "good" flashback, but I can only assume it's because the end (of her revenge, of her PTSD, of her journey, etc) is near, she remembers the final moment with Joel.
"I don't think I can ever forgive you for that. But I would like to try."
Abby finally becomes equal to Joel when Ellie was drowning her. So when Ellie has the flashback of her final conversation with Joel, this sentence is not only to Joel, but also to Abby (I think to herself as well; forgiving herself of wasting 2 years to reconcile with Joel and treating him like shit when they finally have a conversation of a sort since she figured out the truth).
"Go. Just take him."
For the longest time, I thought "him" meant Lev. But now I can see that "him" was referring to "Joel". Ellie is finally able to let Joel go. The one who has taken Joel from Ellie is right there. So I think this sentence truly means "Go, I can let go of my vengeance. I can move on now. I'll let Joel/you go." I believe at this point. Ellie is 99% free from PTSD. The final step is to truly say good-bye to Joel. Therefore, the one last time Ellie plays the guitar and remembers the final conversation with Joel one last time. Then she leans the guitar on the wall instead of packing it back into the case (letting the guitar/Joel to be free instead of trapping it back inside). Now all Ellie has to do is to reconcile with Dina, JJ, and Tommy.
This game is the reason why from now on, I will never let leaks to sway to me judge on something. This game is truly a masterpiece.
This final fight really hurts me and really ruined my emotions, badly. When Abby saw Ellie we see a completely changed Abby who is begging to be free and trying to save Lev. Once she saw Ellie, to me when she said, “it you”? I think she finally realized that Ellie is Joel adopted daughter. That why she gave her those regret, guilty, and sad eyes towards Ellie, when Ellie cut her down. Once down she immediately went to Lev and told her she got her sounds like more like Joel saving Ellie from the hospital. I always thought saving Ellie was a bad part of the hospital. But when I replayed the first game over and over I finally understood why Joel did it. My dad would’ve done the samething. But I didn’t like how Joel just straight up killing Jerry. In my opinion he should’ve just talked to Jerry and told him that he adopted her, and Jerry will probably will let Ellie live because when Marlene got after Jerry about Abby, he was defeated. To the fight, Abby told Ellie where the boats are at. When you followed Abby you see Abby just keep looking at Ellie. I think she realizing that Ellie is becoming like her, full of guilt, regret, depressed, hurt, sad, hungry, confused, etc. Once we get to the boats, Ellie flashback of Joel came on her mind again and that when her desperate vengence came back. When she told Abby I’m not gonna let you leave. Abby immediately stopped and told her she not doing this anymore. Then, Ellie grabbed her the head and to the water. And Abby shaking her head is disbelief and saying, “no I’m not gonna fight you”. It like to me what Abby telling Ellie, “if you fight me, it gonna get way worse. You will become even more depressed, hungry, guilt, regret, etc”. Fans been saying that when you fought Abby for the final time, if she hits you she stops a little like, are you okay. When Ellie almost succeeds on drowning Abby, that when in my option Joel spirit came to Ellie mind telling her, “Stop this Ellie! I don’t want this anymore! Time to find peace for yourself, I will always love you”. To me that guitar is a symbol of peace and forgiveness. When she finally let Abby go, Abby gave her that look of worrying, are you okay, sadness, and understanding look on her face. When she went on the boat she still looked at Abby with those facial expressions. That why I love Abby so much, she clearly understand what she done was wrong but to her were justified when Joel killed her dad in cold blood. Like no offense if that was my only parent and Joel went after my only parent I have left who loves me and took great care of me, yeah I will find him, and I know everyone is gonna do that. Back to Abby, that why she was having bad nightmares, couldn’t sleep, always guilty and full of regret when she succeeds in getting Joel. That probably what happening to Ellie when she killed Alice and Abby friends and then, she started getting PTSD and super desperate to get Abby. Seeing Ellie finally making Abby live is like she finally forgave Joel, Abby, and her Abby friends.
