  • Proximity sensing is a very common application in electronics.
    There are several ways to accomplish this. The most common way is by using a PIR sensor. PIR Sensor senses the change in ambient infrared radiation caused by warm bodies. I have already covered this in my Tutorial No. 5: "PIR Sensor Tutorial - With or Without Arduino". However, since PIR sensors detect movement from living objects, they can generate false alarms. These sensors are also inefficient in hot environments, as they rely on heat signatures.
    The other common methods of proximity sensing involve, using reflected ultrasonic or light beams. Using these sensors, the intruding object is detected by the reflected beam back to its source. The time delay between transmission and reception is measured to calculate the distance to the object.
    In this tutorial, we are going to look at another method of proximity sensing using "Microwaves" and "Doppler Effect". In my hand is an inexpensive RCWL-0516 Microwave Radar Motion Sensor. The RCWL-0516 microwave sensor detects "any movement" from "any object" and does not rely on heat, making it more reliable in hot environments. I am going to use this sensor to create a geo-fence around my house to detect motion and get notifications.

    i only have just one. i used it to trigger a mosfet switch for a battery indicator since i don't want the digital display to always illuminated. I'm glad i can shorten the trigger distance as it suites my purpose. thank you

    My opinion. I have been using this sensor for some time now. I wanted to use this as a replacement for PIR. The only problem is that it can detect from behind thin walls and it triggers false alarm and also it uses much more power than a PIR because it is a continuous wave so if you install somewhere that you wanna rely on battery, it is not recommended. As a whole it is not recommended for security presence detection. It is more suitable for stairway lighting control.

      I agree to the power consumption bit, but you can delimit your detection area by using aluminium foil.

    Hello,
    I appreciate your video; it was very useful. I also have a question about the sensor's sensing angle. I read that this sensor doesn't have a blind spot, but I want to reduce the sensing angle. I don't need it to sense 360 degrees, just between 100 to 180 degrees.
    Is it possible to reduce the sensing angle of the RCWL-0516 sensor? Alternatively, can you suggest some common materials that absorb microwaves and don't affect the waves?
    thank you

      I created a toy gun using the sensor (something similar to laser tagging)
      To limit its area I used few layers of aluminium foil

    Sat here with a range of sensors and initially opted to use one of these for a garden security light. Connected to a 12 volt relay module (nothing else needed, other than a 12v supply to both). Unfortunately they are too sensitive. As I suspected, the shrubs in the garden are giving lots of false readings and it is also picking me up as I move around the conservatory 😂 I also had a problem when I tried one in the garage with the tumble drier in, for some reason it continually fired when the tumbler was on. Just desperately trying to find a real life use. Also, when using a ldr, it requires almost total darkness to operate, even holding it in my closed fist wasn’t dark enough. Back to PIR’s for me😢 Great video. Thanks.

    • @CrazyCoupleDIY
      @CrazyCoupleDIY  7 месяцев назад

      That is absolutely true.
      The problem with the PIR sensor is that you can not effectively use it in a hot environment.

    Hi, great information. I want to use this sensor, with an arduino, to calculate the speed of a slot car. Do I need two of them or cna it be done with only one? What is the response time for the sensor? Ie how long between the car passing to the sensor being triggered? Thanks

    hi, friend. I was experimenting with this sensor and came to the conclusion that it is not useful for alarms. It is very sensitive and is triggered by the slightest movement of a branch. Furthermore, it is impossible to direct the detection beam. Lightning cannot be channeled with either aluminum foil or 2 cm thick iron. Any comment from you would be very helpful. greetings.
