I love how you did your attic window...it gives me confidence that I can make one...When I think of an attic window I picture the antique windows that had the wide window facings with the lovely medallions in the corners...the color of stained wood.
Finally want to do this quilt. I watched all kinds of tutorials. You are particular about things matching up kind of like I am. This techniques was exceptional. I always plan before I start sewing and while researching your tutorial was the absolute best. Now I feel totally prepared with this video as my guideline.
HI Tracy! Your Attic Window quilt is amazing and so easy to stitch together. Personally I think it doesn't need a border, however a small border, say 4 1/2" or 5" in a faded or crackled cream to simulate a wall would look very nice. I'll be excited to see what you decide. Thank you for sharing, hug Josie for us! ~~Lynne
Using the wood grain fabric for the border would keep it in the window theme, that was the whole point of the quilt. You made it so simple, Thanks for not charging , like others do. Giving explanations for why you made different choices makes it so much easier for beginners like me to understand.
Best illusion quilt I've seen so far. That fabric and method nailed it. I'm looking for the perfect effect for a deer panel. I think this is it. Love it!
Oh my goodness, this quilt is amazing!! I’m going to put this idea on my wish list of quilt ideas for future quilting. I’m just starting out with quilting and need to get more experience before trying this!
Thank uou Tracy. Today I found a beautiful summer scene panel and was wondering what to do with it. THEN, I found you video. Perfect timing!! Thank you for your instructions.
That is the best attic window I’ve seen. That wood fabric is perfect. I would border it in a wider plank wood fabric cutting it so the grain runs the same way all around. Make it look like it’s actually a window in a rustic home.
Oh my goodness, this Attic Window quilt is exquisite! I love it! Thank you for taking the time to explain everything step by step. I am brand new to quilting and never thought I could try a quilt like this…now I think I can! 😁
What an amazing fix you made. I definitely saved this video for when I'm ready for my attic window quilt. I have my fabric blocks of flowers and have been waiting for an easier way to add the "frame". So happy I waited. Thank you so much! ☺
Good for you. You found the way to improve this project. Awesome. Now I will make this pattern with this lovely florali have on hand. Thank you so much. I love that you didn't gab at us.
Wow Tracy, The illusion looks really good. Yea, I was thinking a cream boarder would look good. I think this attic window quilt is the best I’ve ever seen. Great Job, 🥰 Chris
Wow Chris thanks for the feedback on the quilt. I wasn't sure how "realistic" it would look with the wood fabric. When I first showed my daughter a pic of it she thought I put up wood boxes in my sewing room HAHA....
Fantastic tutorial! That fabric is PERFECT! Love the tips! My opinion is not border. Love the idea of the all the fabrics in the binding. This is amazing!
I love the attic flowers window especially how you match the lines and the lights in the corners it look real! I think the border has to match the illusion meaning since is spring colors add one ligth color with a 1/2'' wider than the last dark brown border for contrast and add another one 1/2 " wider and darker value and follow the illusion in the same manner for the corners. I know you do it easy at the same time nothing is complicated for you, Thanks Tracy you challenge me with your suggestion about the borders! Brilliant if I may say so!
You are very kind Nilda....I love all your ideas✅ I may make it look easy....but most of the time it really is! You can do it too Nilda...Happy quilting!🌸
I like it have been cutting my fabric in the 10 inch blocks and have some of the same fabric. I like the cream idea. For the borders. Thanks for sharing.
I was thinking a white border about 3 seconds before you said it.😀👍🏼 What a gorgeous quilt! This is the best window quilt and explanation that I have found on RUclips. You make it so easy to understand something that can be quite difficult.❤️❤️ I’m going to use this method for a child’s panel that I have... thank you.
Hi Tracy! That is absolutely beautiful! I just love all your quilt designs. I think the brown crackle boarder would look really good. Whatever boarders you use though I am sure will look good. Take care and have a blessed and wonderful day. ❤
Omg! I Love this quilt! And I found the perfect bird and flower, 100% cotton, curtain panel at a thrift store this weekend. So excited! And thank you for showing how you did the window corners! Looks so much better than the HSTs 😍
Yes! It calls for a wide border. I hope to see it all finished. I wouldn’t make it stark white, though. A neutral tan or gray. Just thinking I would make the binding out of th left over florals.
You are amazing. How long have you been designing your quilts. You have been quite generous in sharing your designs. Thank you for bringing a breath of fresh air to the sewing room.
Thank you so much for the kind feedback Cynthia💛 I only design my own quilt patterns because I can't follow patterns to save a life LOLOLOL😂 I made my first quilt about 7 years ago...for one of my daughters college grad gift💛(I even designed that 1st quilt✅)
How I wish I would’ve seen your version of attic windows. I just made one for my daughter. It’s ok. But with your method, it would’ve been so much better. Thank you
I like the look of it without borders. If I were adding a border, I would use the dark you have there and bind with the same fabric, but that's me. LOL
I have plans for a similar quilt, I have a collection wood fabrics for a different quilt but plan to use some for an attic window, however I won't be using flowers in the centers. My border will be 4 to 6 in and will also be in wood since an attic window is rarely set in a finished wall
That is lovely! And you figured it out perfectly. i think the floral border you mentioned would really work. Even if you only used one of the rose patterned fabrics.
Beautiful quilt top and love your step by step instructions explaining everything! This took the mystery out of my mind with the attic quilt look! Great job and thank you! Also, I like the idea of a cream color border of that crackle finish. Would make it see like the walls of the attic. Any way you finish it, it will be gorgeous!
Hi Tracy, I would add a fabric that looks like night or day. I have seen a few with the constellations and at least one with clouds. Since these are meant to be windowpanes that might look nice. Love your channel. You voice is very soothing.
This was so helpful to me for an illusion quilt I once saw and wondered how on earth it was made. A friend had told me years ago all quilts are just a matter of squares combined. I repeat I am not a quilter, I do not wish to grow up to be a quilter. I prefer clothing and accessories. Why is there three quilts on my projects to get made this year list. Sigh. There is clothing on my list starting with a dress form and seam roll. First I must graduate college this spring.
@@TheSewingChannel graduating college will be the hardest. Then finding a job that allows me to craft too. No going back to work at the fabric store for me.
The boarder could be any favorite colors like the wall the widow is in. So for me it would be blue or purple as they are my favorites. I might pick a smaller print since those look to be mostly larger ones. Or a solid.
Love it ! I think if you use the same fabric for the border that you used for the look of the mullions it would give the the window more depth and visually appear as a whole window and casing without distraction.
I had to look up the word mullion Elizabeth LOL😂 I have never heard that word before....I love learning new things!!! Your idea could totally work too!!!✅
Hey Tracy I just wanted to let you know that I received my quilt today and I love it it is absolutely beautiful and thank you again I wish I could send a picture but I don’t know where to post it
OH that's wonderful Beverly!!!💛 If you are on Instagram then you could put a pic up and hashtag it with #thesewingchannel (I had a ton of trouble free motion quilting that quilt because of my machine..... but it is what it is LOL)
What a beautiful quilt. I'm new to quilting but would definitely not be afraid to try this pattern. For the wood strips, would it work if you layed your light and dark strips facing each other and cut one side at a 45 degree angle, then sew them together? That would eliminate the need for a triangle....wouldn't it? As for the border, I would look for a grunge fabric so it looks like faded or aged paint.
@@TheSewingChannel Like I said, I'm new to quilting, but have been sewing mostly clothing for many years. I've seen where other quilters have shied away from a "Y" seam but didn't understand why.
Hey Tracy: Finally got to watch this video. I was wondering while watching if, instead of making a corner HST and trying to match it up with the wood grain on both adjacent sides, could you instead use 14 1/2" long side and bottom wood-looking fabrics strips, and sew the ends together diagonally using an partial seam to achieve that mitered wood intersecting corner look? The seam would have to stop 1/4" from the inside window-corner edge. Trim excess fabric off on back side to make a 1/4" seam allowance. Then, with right sides together, match one of the wooden sides with one of your window square sides. Sew together stopping 1/4" from wood miter seam intersection. Do same on adjacent window side. (Essentially, this would be the Y-seam method.) Does that make any sense??? Each of your 3 intersecting fabric seams would stop short 1/4" from each other, yet still result in creating a finished faux wood mitered corner. Then, trim opposite ends of wooden fabric lengths to align with top and opposing window side edges. It might actually be easier than trying to match up the wood grain using the HST method on each adjacent side. I dunno. In my head, this could work, but in the real world (the one I don't inhabit the majority of the time 🤪), it might not come out right. Just another way to view this situation. Anyway, your videos always challenge me in some way, and that's why I am such a fan of you and your videos - for the creative challenge! 🤔 Helps to clear out the cobwebs, so keep 'em coming!!! 😉 Oh! I was so hung up on the mitered-look corner that I completely spaced about the quilt border question. Oh, well!
Yes...you could totally do that Dori✅ I didn't want to make a Y seam there..I was thinking easiest way to get the result LOL😂 I need my cobwebs cleared LOL
A border made out of more of the wood look fabrics would be nice. Most attics have unfinished wooden walls. You may want to use brighter wooden print fabric that does not look sun oe weather damaged. Your quilt top is beautiful.
Do you have any of the wood grain fabric left? IDK but it might make an interesting inner border 🤔. I think your attic window quilt is one of the best I've seen. It's the wood fabric and your attention to detail I think. Love it. 😊👍💕
Tracy my thoughts are… are you looking in the window 🪟 or look out? I see a flower 🌸 💐 🌸 🌹 🌺 garden outside the windows… so so I would use a color that stands out on the inside walls of the homes window… like it’s windows are from inside…
Hi Tracy! Thanks for the video. Have made one with people in the windows(memory quilt). I have quilted the seams. But. My windows are 8 inch. And batting recommends 4” between quiltings. How should I quilt the inside of the window.? Feels weird to quilt over peoples faces. The quilt is a 60 yr present, so dont want the batting crumple in the middle over time. Thank you so much in advance.
OH MY GOSH - Where did you get that beautiful red rose fabric with neutral background?? I found a little bit of it at a thrift store recently. I LOVE it and want more! Any advice? This attic window quilt is LOVELY🥰😍❣
I wonder what it would look like with the border on left and white out of the light fabric at bottom of windows and matching cream at top and bottom. Would it give you an illusion of a real window with shutters in the sides? Also, could you just sew together the two strips together the same way you are doing with a square of the dark? Eliminating the extra square to match up?
Great questions. If you didn’t make the extra 2.5” square then you would have to do a “y” seam which I am totally not fond of lol 😂 thank you for the border idea sally💛
Do you mix your better fabrics with Joanne’s fabrics? This dilemma has stopped me so many times from making something, I have my better fabrics, such as Moda, Wilmington, Riley Blake, etc.. but won’t have a color to match except some piece I hv from Joanne’s, so I don’t make that project. I guess I need someone to tell me it’s ok to mix and match higher quality fabrics with lesser quality fabrics and that my project will be ok doing so, lol??? And I so love your attic window quilt, it’s beautiful. I like ur idea of using all the floral pieces as binding. I almost don’t think I’d add another border.
ABSOLUTELY I mix my "designer" & "department store" fabrics!!! I do it all the time! I have Moda, Pioneer Woman(walmart) & Joanns all represented in this quilt. I "feel" the fabrics....You will be able to tell the cheap stuff....but honestly everyone has seemed to step up their game with quality. I go with what I like....I don't worry about the brand part of it✅ Hope that helps💛
@@TheSewingChannel YES, yes, yes, this helps. I could have been so many quilts and other projects ahead if I wasn’t afraid to mix and match brand name fabrics with Box store fabrics. I knew I couldn’t hv been the only person with is question, I just kept waiting on someone else to ask it, lol. My husband is weeks from retiring, so this helps a lot knowing it’s ok to mix fabrics. I understand what you mean by the feel of fabrics and which are better. I’ve seen the pioneer woman fabrics and I think they’re gorgeous, just haven’t bought them yet, but after seeing your attic window quilt and reading your comment, I will now be getting them. Thank you Tracey for your reply ♥️
@@TheSewingChannel I am telling you, you are missing out. Just the fact of not having to use so many rulers because that Mat has so many markings let me find a really good video for you later. It’s so much fun it’s long you don’t have to stay online for the entirety but they have top quality fabric for quilting. Instead of cutting off and matching on the dark brown, why not cut both light and dark 13 inches long, place right sides together and miter that corner and stitch and flip up? So the material and coloring would match automatically.
That wood grain fabric really made that look like a window!!!❤

That's a tough one...i probably would not quilt over the faces...you could always outline the face maybe🤷🏻♀️
@@TheSewingChannel solved the problem by using invisible thread. Worked ok. 🙂
I would use the darker 'wood' fabric as a border. What did you end up using?
It's a UFO as we speak lol🤷🏻♀️
OH MY GOSH - Where did you get that beautiful red rose fabric with neutral background?? I found a little bit of it at a thrift store recently. I LOVE it and want more! Any advice? This attic window quilt is LOVELY🥰😍❣
Charlie...which block do you mean? Some I got at walmart...some Joann fabrics.....some Hobby Lobby....which row is it in?
Would the binding trick work to match the matching?
I’m not sure I understand the question Rosi?
@@TheSewingChannel when you connect strips to make binding, isn’t it on a 45 degree? I could just be wrong ..,
@@TheSewingChannel I LOVE THE WINDOW LOOK!!!!
You are right 45° for binding. You could not Attach the 2 angles that way because you would end up with a “y” seam. ( I think that’s the question 🤓)
@@TheSewingChannel yep!!! But worth the thought… I am an infant quilter… LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!!
❤️❤️❤️
💛💛💛
The bottom pcs look like snow on the window! Maybe i will try this now. Thanks!
Definitely have to try Phyllis...super easy make💛
Do you mix your better fabrics with Joanne’s fabrics?
Of course you can! Once it is quilted it will all stay in place. Just make sure you never mix washed & unwashed fabrics in the same quilt.

Why do you make the binding with material that has greenery, the sky and clouds?
Great ideas Shelly✅
😍😍😍😍😍😍

Did you get your Martelli mat yet? I couldn’t remember the name of your channel because I think they had a sale and I couldn’t find you
No I haven’t. Not sure yet if I’m going to🤷🏻♀️
@@TheSewingChannel I am telling you, you are missing out. Just the fact of not having to use so many rulers because that Mat has so many markings let me find a really good video for you later. Did you know about the online fabric sale from a family run business out of Las Vegas? It’s so much fun it’s long you don’t have to stay online for the entirety but they have top quality fabric for quilting. And there’s only so many yards so you have to feed your number quite quickly
Tonight is the six dollars a yard night
Thank you for all the info. I appreciate it. 💛
@@TheSewingChannel OK here’s a short video on the mat

@@TheSewingChannel and here is one on the mat and the ruler it says part two so obviously part one is out there somewhere

two side borders that look like shutters, bottom that looks like a flower box and top that looks like vines.
Wow...creative idea✅
A border would set it off.
I totally agree Nita✅
I could have just midered the dark and white together
Instead of cutting off and matching on the dark brown, why not cut both light and dark 13 inches long, place right sides together and miter that corner and stitch and flip up? So the material and coloring would match automatically.
Great question....That would make a "Y" seam which is a struggle for me LOL😂I do best with straight seams✅
It would look cool if you used the martial that looks like wood. Lol
You might be right Bonie✅
PS - only join the strips going the "wrong" direction for binding so that you get a 90'.
I was trying to stay away from the "y" seam🤷🏻♀️
