I was cleaning off a XEON on a AsRock Extreme 3 X79 motherboard, to change out the cpu. I was using a new absorbant/re-usable kitchen towel, made of compressed fibers, often used for cleaning dishes with soapy water. The towels come in a stack at the store and are about 1 square foot each in dimension. I was using one as a rag to wipe away the thick thermal paste and had it in my one hand as I took the CPU carefully out of the socket. Then I made the mistake of getting that fibrous rag close to the socket and about 1 square inch of it touched the pins...which all seemed to grab hold of those fibers. I could not pull it away without bending those pins. I really thought that I had totally trashed that motherboard. Before making the situation worse, I tried a different approach. I got out a BIC lighter and carefully burned away the fibers clinging to the pins, slowly taking the towel off. It worked like a charm. Just had to be careful not to let the flame linger. I would burn...stop...burn...stop...always being sure not to heat the pins excessively. I used compressed air to blow away the fiber residue. Voila.

I did the same a year ago - except i pulled the microfibre towel and bent about 15 pins upright, felt like screaming and crying ! But 3 hours later all straightened (ish) and it booted up, lesson learned….

My first comment on any of your videos. Anyway, Just want to say that this method works and I've learned it from you. I am infact typing on this system with a motherboard newly socket cleaned. It was a gigabyte z97x-ud5h motherboard that I bought recently as part of a faulty system. The system would boot with only 1 ram on DIMM 1 but after doing a tech yes loving treatment. It had 2 ram slots working but no dual channels. but the second slot was also very picky as it will only run 2 single rank DIMMs. Use the "thicker" american multi-purpose substance and a good paint brush i had. carefully stroked the pins and tested my DIMM. All 3 pairs of gskil and mushkin DIMMs that won't even work on any 2 slots together now work on all 4 slots. this gigabyte board was problematic as it was throwing all sorts of post codes and looping. once it finds a DIMM it doesn't like, I had to restore the main bios from the backup to just make it work (with only 1 DIMM on the primary slot).
I am Long time follower of your channel on atleast one of my subs. Anyway, i've been doing some buying and selling during this "period". I haven't done this since pre-college some 20 years ago. Anyway, your channel is sort of what I used to enjoy back in the day ( the "parts hunt") . I thoroughly enjoyed you going to different countries for the parts hunt because I used to do that when I go to japan, taiwan, singapore. Anyway, I hit the subscribe button today because of a particular point you made. The parts-performance community doesn't have the fan boy zealots. I notice people who I recently sold systems to understand the "value" of the components. No "team green","team red", "team blue" just price-peformance. In fact this is how i discovered x58 platform which is thru your channel. I hated it when it came out because it was overpriced but I've leared to love it now. I discovered the value of x79 3 years ago and loved what it had to offer and I began watching youtube channels about it since then and bumped into tech yes city. Thanks again Mate!

Still have my SFF in the attic. Back then I didn’t have a gaming pc or much money, so I got an old office pc from work.
I upgraded the i5-2400S to a i7-2600 (non-K), changed the 2x2GB 1333MHz Elpida RAM to 2x4GB 1600MHz Kingston Value RAM and added in a Asus GTX1050ti since it did not have a graphics card, sorry gravis card 🤪
and ... gaming time on a budget 😜
Ps. Even got the 24” TN monitor it came with and the original Lenovo keyboard and mouse. The mouse wasn’t that good and I changed that for I believe a cheaper one from Razer but the usb keyboard was actually really nice for gaming 😉

The only part of the pins in a LGA socket that need cleaning (or benefit from cleaning) are the very tips, the tiny domes that actually contact the lands on the CPU. I drag a few strips of fairly heavy, alcohol wetted printer paper across them (a few with a 90° point to get into the corners), I reckon the paper is just abrasive enough to clean/polish the gold plating. This is after making sure there are no obvious contaminants such as fibres that might interfere mechanically.

  • @amp888
    @amp888 4 года назад +2

A small tip when trying to straighten the CPU socket pins would be not to use a cocktail stick, because small splinters of wood can break off and get stuck in there (ask me how I know...). A good alternative is to use a very small cable tie; since they're plastic they won't fragment, and they also have a little bit of 'give' to them compared to the wood, so they can be a little more gentle.

  • @FrLe7

For people that can't buy his multi purpose spray, look for Contact cleaners, they will do the same job, as the most important part is that they contain solvents which clean the PCB and evaporate quickly. Look for Heptane, or Hexane in the contents. Isopropyl alcohol works as well but it can be harmful to plastic parts.

Managed to get one more dimm slot working. But the mobo works in single channel. Saw your x58 fix video. Took a toothbrush to the pins with WD40, bent some pins back and now I have one more dimm slot working, unfortunate that I couldn't get it to work in triple channel but I got it in dual channel so I guess that's a win!

Here's what I've learned concerning WD 40. It is the best lubricant for PC fans. You can extend the lifespan of lower RPM fans in particular with WD 40. In case of PCBs, use the contact cleaner variant of WD 40.it's really great and leaves no residue. If a fan is rattling, sounds louder than normal, or spinning very slowly. Give it a spin with your hands to see if it's heavy because that's the main indication that it needs lubrication. Also, you can use old CPU fans as case fans if they're becoming loud at their maximum speeds or even as a replacement for a dead PSU fan

Thank you for mentioning CRC 5-56. It still isn't available in the 'States, but I had better luck finding an MSDS for that. I thought I'd see if I could find out what the active ingredient is, and see if there's anything close to your magic spray on the market. I think that's doubtful, but I still have some research to do. Anyway, the top ingredient in CRC 5-56 is listed as "distillates (petroleum), hydrotreated light," also known as "dearomatized kerosene." That comprises ">60%." The next two ingredients are Mineral oil and liquified petroleum gas (Butadine, which I'm guessing is the propellant) each composing 10-30% of the product. I'm guessing that the dearomatized kerosene is the thing that keeps it off our shelves. The EPA may have it banned, or at least not allowed in aerosol form. WD-40 is mostly mineral oil. In my searching, I've seen dearomatized kerosene being marketed as an alternative for mineral oil, but only on sites outside the US, and generally on a major industrial scale. I just don't think there's anything comparable on the market here. :'(

    • @drewdane40
      @drewdane40 4 года назад +1

Wait! I have found several different products with similar composition to CRC 5-56 that are available in the US. Going to keep the names to myself until I've bought them and checked them out myself, because I'm just going off of some half-assed comparisons of safety data sheets. I wouldn't want to put out any information without first-hand knowledge. I will do some testing and report back

Not sure if it will work on the Lenovo but you may want to try what I did to fix the fan error on a Dell.
I have linked the yellow wire pin from System fan connector (the missing fan) to yellow pin from CPU fan connector and no more F1 fan error at boot . I just soldered a wire (Y split) to yellow wire from CPU header and run it to the removed fan's header on the motherboard. And presto, no more error. the yellow wire on Dell I think is the Tach/rpm. Basically I tricked the system to think the missing system fan was still spinning by using the rpm sensor on the CPU header. :)

Can't possibly agree more about the friendly nature of price/performance bargain builders vs people arguing over new stuff (often over single digit percentages lol)
Tips I have, that will help with bargain builds with a small SSD + larger storage hard drive is to right click the downloads, documents, and possibly the music and videos folders in Windows File Explorer, and change the storage path to D:\Profile\Documents etc. What this does is make these folders not take up precious space on smaller SSDs, and be seamless where people don't have to remember to not accidentally fill them up with random downloads etc. Also running disk cleanup after each Win10 build update such as 1909 to 2004, etc, which will usually free up ~20GB or more.

    Couple tricks:
Ive noticed on socket 1155 that Polaris cards will post without video. In my experience you can edit the vbios to disable the efi partition of the boot table using a hex editor and get the cards to work. Its pretty quick once you know which 2 entries to change.
For oem systems there are huge communities with info about front panel pinouts for the oem boards. Repinning the connectors can help you get around some of those annoying post error messages that make you press F1.
Current project is an optiplex 990 recase. Theyve built in a lot of bs, but I have a date with a soldering iron so hopefully that works around it.

A better option for cleaning the pins is electrical contact cleaner or DeoxIT D-Series (even better). You shouldn't even need to brush the pins with the DeoxIT spray.

    • @Azerkeux

@@jackflash6377 Brake clean isn't that caustic, you're thinking of carb cleaner which should most certainly *not* be used on plastics or rubbers
Though it should come with the caveat that you should not soak or expose plastics and rubbers in brake clean for any extended period of time. If it doesn't immediately evaporate just from ambient temperature you should quickly encourage evaporation with some compressed air.

M93p is my favorite OEM system. It has 4 slot DDR3 RAM and its PCIe x16 slot is compatible with recent GPU card. The only drawback is, it use 14 pin PSU connector rather that universal 24 pin connector. But, there is always way around. The front connector USB3 header also different from mostly aftermarket motherboard so the chance of getting USB 3.0 on the front panel of new PC chassis is very slim since I haven't found any adapter to 15 pin USB 3.0 header connector.

To clean cpu pins, instead of using multi-purpose spray cleaner/lube, I think a better alternative would be ELECTRICAL CONTACT CLEANER! Generally it is a bit thinner than most multi-purpose spray cleaner/lube I have found and it is it's main purpose anyway... So y'all are not missing out on anything for not having the australian export multi-purpose spray or crc 556 since i'm pretty sure electrical contact cleaner is not hard to find internationaly.

I have found from experience that when ram is not detected that doing these 3 things will usually solve the issue unless there is physical damage to the board. or dirt or debris in the CPU socket
1st thing to try is to clean the gold contacts on the ram with q tip and rubbing alcohol
2nd clean the bottom of the CPU gold contacts the pads with a q tip and rubbing alcohol
3rd clean the ram slots them selves with rubbing alcohol and a old tooth brush i have had a 99.9999% success rate using these methods

I've used a couple M73 boards and both had a problem that resolved itself. When trying to put in 2 sticks of ram for the first time, they didn't post. I tested each stick in both channels (each stick posted in both channels) and when I put them both back in a second time, they magically posted with nothing else being done. Perhaps getting the board to post with one stick makes it so that it can post in dual channel in some cases.

Pro-tip: never flash the BIOS inside of Windows, especially on these older boards. The last thing you want to have happen is for the Windows kernel to crash while the BIOS is being flashed.
Always always always flash the BIOS in a MS-DOS-bootable USB drive.
If the BIOS allows it, update from within the BIOS (obviously), but if not, then always flash from within a bootable USB MS-DOS drive.
