It saddens me when people don't understand this, especially considering just how much of a sweetheart Doug Walker really is. People judge him as this eccentric douchebag when that's just his character. Yeah I'm not a fan of all his work, but when people talk about him negatively they usually forget it's the character and they really think Doug is an asshole when he's not.

This movie would have been a whole lot better if it was just the two kids being bitter foils to one another for most of the movie, maybe falling in love during their teens. Maybe.

King Edward "Longshanks" I, Hammer of the Scots, Lord of Wales and King of England Yeah probably and maybe also try to tell the story in a much better way. I feel like that’s really important for the movie if they had better storytelling that made sense and would make the film more likable and memorable to people. Also not releasing any sequels to it would have been a good idea.

You know, if they hadn't thrown so much of Odette's characterization away after the first song, there could be something here. Odette could be frustrated with Derek because he sees her as trophy wife material and nothing else, but she ends up meeting Rothbart, who could be played as a romantic foil for Derek and sees the potential in Odette to become the perfect apprentice to him. And for a while, Odette is just glad that he recognizes the fact that Rothbart recognizes how clever and eager to learn she is, but the more she sees his less moral tendencies the more she's turned off, so she spurns him. Angry and brokenhearted, Rothbart turns her into a swan and taunts her that she'll have to find someone who appreciated and loved her more than he did in order to break the curse. Meanwhile, Derek might be shallow, but he's still a good person at heart, and when he sees that he left Odette at the mercy of a sorcerer, he feels guilty and is willing to put himself through hell to make it all up to her. From there, their romance can grow more organically and gradually.
There, Richard Rich. I helped fix your movie.

*_pops back up_* I'm not done--I've been thinking more about this concept!
In this AU of the movie, Odile takes Bridget's place. She's another young woman who's being tutored by Rothbart, and she's jealous of Odette for stealing away the attention of all the men (even though Odette's made it perfectly clear that she's not interested, and she only warms up to Derek later on). This, on top of Rothbart already teaching her to be spiteful and opportunistic, is what drives her to sabotage the ball by impersonating Odette and trying to trick Derek into making his vow to the wrong person. But because it's _not_ Odette with him, the vow's effect doesn't take, and he realizes he's been tricked. He races back to Swan Lake to try to make up for his mistake, but Odette's already been hoodwinked into thinking Derek betrayed her and lashes out against him. That's when Rothbart shows up to gloat and start the climactic battle, and it's Derek who gets the Heroic Sacrifice fakeout death, which serves as his real vow of everlasting love for her.
Also, while we're here, can Puffin be the only sidekick Odette has? He's far and away the most useful out of the three--his only fault is being a little too enthusiastic, which is really not the worst thing.

Old comment, but I was just reading this and thought maybe it's too "young adult novel" for a kid's film. Maybe change Rothbart to a teacher-role and then Odette discovers he's basically training her for his own purposes. I also think making the only other young female character a jealous rival sets a bad precedent we see too often, that girls are too catty for comradery.

  • @username-mk4qv

I'm glad you pointed out that Odette is being a hypocrite.
It always bothered me that she suddenly was in love with Derek when just a few scenes prior she was turned off by his shallowness.
Now it makes sense because she's just as shallow. They are both superficial and poorly written, a match made in heaven.

Niga chan Then why did she call off the wedding? She claims that it’s because Derek only wanted her for her looks, but she still is in love with him, despite being a sexist jerk. Why does she take him back? If she says that Derek’s “inner beauty” is what attracted her to him, why does she call off the wedding anyway?
It’s one thing if she said that she’ll only marry him under the condition that he stop being a shallow jerk and therefore they should get to know each other first, but that never happens, plus they had their entire lives to get to know each other.
She still takes him back and they get married in the end.
Even if your fiancé fucks up, that doesn’t mean you just call off a wedding.

    Everything Wrong with Rothbart's plan:
    1. If he wants take her Kingdom by marrying her LEGALLY, why not hypnotize her into being in live with him?
    2. A confession of one's undying love is what breaks the spell? Isn't that counterproductive to his plan?
    3. If the light of the moon hitting the lake is what turns her back, what's to stop her from retaliating against him when he's not looking, while in her human form?
    4. Even if Audet did agree to marry him, what's to stop her from breaking it off after her spell is lifted.
    5. What's to stop her from flying away as a swan, and finding someone to communicate with.

Odette has to be on the lake and when the moonlight touches her wings she transforms into a human. Once she transforms she can come and go as she pleases, but once the moonlight leaves the lake she’ll turn back into a swan no matter where she is. If she wants to become human again, she has to be back on the lake the following night. This is what ties her to the lake and keeps her from running away. It’s really simple, the explain it several times during the movie.

Just a random thought: what if in all those years they had to meet as children, Odette had one specific feature to her (lets say she likes a certain kind of music) that Derek always overlooked.
And in the scene where he chooses the wrong Odette, the "faker" is shown to not have that trait. It always bothered me as a kid that Derek had no way to tell if this was Odette and so it wasnt his fault.
If he really have had a chance (by seeing the character difference) and he just ruined it, would make it better in my opinion....

Despite its flaws, I love this movie. Rogers is so snarky and I like the songs. I want a Brunhilda (the armour princess) movie too. ^-^ However I agree Derek and Odette should've been fleshed out more. Jasmine had more evidence to call out her dad, Jafar, and Prince Ali Abawa on treating her like a trophy prize. If the movie had enough balls this would've been a great movie about lust vs love. Odette showcasing her talents while Derek just focused on her beauty or better yet gender flip. Odette yearning for that perfect prince only to confront her own shallow nature when dismissing Derek's skill at archery or his love for his mom Uberta. Seriously. HECK keep the evil twin subplot and teach that if you only care about physical attractiveness you can easily be replaced. Sorry my post is long. Thanks for the review and looking forward to your next episode.

I agree. The whole Vow of Everlasting love not counting would have made more sense if Derek learned a little more about the fake Odette during the Ball and therefore made the vow completely useless since he wasn't in love with the real Odette. It would have made his superficial views a good plot point and he would learn a lesson of true love by the end. Also they should have just made Odette ugly ( Or as ugly as Diet Disney goes for ) throughout childhood so this whole shebang can get rolling.

    Also, little thought, here.
Maybe Odette dying if Derrick confessed to someone else makes some sense in that swans mate for life, and I mean, I've known cases where a swan would die of grief if it's partner died (legit happened in my local park: some swans were introduced, and they were a mated pair. Some hooligans killed one and the other died from sadness since it's mate was gone). Not exactly on the same caliber, but in theory, Odette now being such a creature would mean that if she were torn from her romantic partner, she'd be more susceptible to death by sorrow due to the increased emotional state of the animal she was turned into.
...Or I'm reading too deep into this. XP

a few questions about this film.
why doesn't rothbart have his daughter in this version? I see no reason replacing her with the old lady if they are going to have her play the same purpose as the daughter when he makes her look like odette. in the ballet the reason he uses his daughter is because she already looks like odette because they are both the same age and same body type so disguising her is easy.
why didn't Derek go though multiple different looks as a child like odette did?
what is the point of having them grow up together if it's not going to relevant in any way? it's a good idea to have them grow up together to build their romance though out the years and it's different from any Disney princess romance and if they used it correctly it could have come in to play in many clever ways. Like for example foreshadowing a lot of the traits that they will have later in the film.

I find the movie to be good for what it is. Sure there are some issues like not having any Swan Ballerina Dances, a few animation errors in the background, and some stupid character personalities that the characters have that they shouldn't like the queen forgetting Odette and Derek not sure what to say about Odette as a person than beauty. But I do like it with it's fun music, likable characters, nice animation, and a story that's well told (despite it should've been based on the ballerina dance)

"My name is Princess Andromeda of the Kingdom of Aries. For generations, civil war has plagued my kingdom. Everyday, I fight to protect my mother and father, my men who are loyal despite never knowing if they'll live to see tomorrow, and my horse Odysseus who has been my companion since childhood.
I was struck by warring soldier, leaving my face dismembered and mangled... I could have died that day... but by miracle, some soldiers were able to save me as well as the royal medics. They managed to fix my face, granted not all my bones could be saved. I was given prosthetics. I can say, I love it! I still appear glamorous while keeping the appearance of a princess and a commander.
When I heard of Derrick's request for a bride, I traveled far along with Odysseus to hopefully meet him. If we were to be wed, our kingdoms will unite, our armies merge, and hopefully stop the raging war. I've heard tales of him being rather handsome. But before we left, I made myself a dress of armor so that way, if ambushed, I shall be protected.
We finally made it to the kingdom. Derrick is prettier than I imagined. Odysseus seemed to like him too. However, he seemed off put by my appearance. There were other princesses that came in to woo this prince... if I can't marry him, maybe I can speak politics to him. I have to save my kingdom from this civil war, I have to.
He declared his love to someone else by the name of Princess Odette. This means that the kingdoms will not unite but I am not discouraged. It means I have to fight a little bit longer. I will. And hopefully, one day, the war will end."

I hate to nit-pick you, Bobsheaux, but in the beginning, nothing was said about a son. The narrator just said he had no heir, which could mean a son or daughter. (or perhaps you have a reworked copy of some sort?) and not all Pate is goose liver, some is duck liver or pork liver. Sometimes chicken liver. I see where you were going with it though.
Other than that, yeah, this movie is a complete plot hole riddled mess.

    • @TheAngryXenite
      @TheAngryXenite 6 лет назад +10

TsukasaFanTc It's a European kingdom in the middle ages. A king lacking a son is largely the same as him lacking an heir because it took a lot for female rulers to be accepted. If they didn't have any other suitable male members of the family with claims to the throne, then yeah, they'd do it, but it's traditionally a good way to trigger a succession crisis.

Derek and Odette loved eachother without realizing it. They probably did not love eachother as children, but when they became pre-teens it became a plutonic love. From the beginning, Odette was always the one trying to gain Derek's approval. She was alway the first to bow, chased after Derek when they were children and convinced him to play dress up. Odette was the first of the two to develop feelings, as girls mature more quickly. You also see Odette's maturity when understanding her royal duties as she waves at the public.
Derek's feelings came later in their teens when Odette came into some of her looks. Derek begins to include Odette in their games. Derek's best friend says , "I think you sorta like her fess-up"....when Odette is flirting with the castle guard while Derek looks on with jealousy because he likes her. When Odette is finially her most beautiful, Derek admits to wanting to be with her. Young men are usually driven by looks.
When Derek finally wants to marry Odette, she already knows he loves her, but wants him to have the maturity to admit why he does. During their last meeting she folds her arms saying, "He's so immature..." Odette always had her doubts about Derek's character. On their first meeting Odette says, "He looks conceited..." or when Derek and his best friend sling-shot a tomato at her. Odette probably still has insecurities from those childhood memories and simply does not want to be with him now that she's "pretty". Odette says, "I need to know he loves me for me."

I love watching this movie but yes many things about it bothers me:
-Why do Odette and Derek need to fall in love? If you're royalty you marry who you are told, whether you like it or not.
-Why didn't William and Ubertha marry if they wanted to join kingdoms and had absent spouses?
-Derek initially doesn't like Odette because he assumes she won't like to do the manly activities he enjoys, but then we see her sword fighting with him and wrestling, and yet he still dislikes her?
-Theyve spent their lives hating each other, yet when they meet again as adults were supposed to believe they just kinda "realize' they're actually in love? How does she look inside him just by him smiling instead of frowning for once? So yeah talk about forced and poorly argued
-how dare Derek call her an ugly duckling she was literally adorable in every age stage, also they see each other every year right, so why is he just now seeing her face, that's been that way for a while, and going "woah"?
-odette refuses to marry him and yet still wants him, is still hoping he can convince her to change her mind? And then she gets kidnapped and is all "I will marry Derek and you can't stop me"? Like girl if you wanted to do that so bad why did you say no when he asked??
    - for some reason rothbard thinks the swan spell and no other threats will make his plan work, also WHY a swan??
    - yeah I don't get the point of the animal companions or rothbards assistant
    - if Odette realized there would be no moon tomorrow, why didn't she run after Derek to his castle to explain before she turned back into a swan?
    - does Derek's friend live in the castle with him or something?
    - why does rothbard decide all of a sudden he'd rather kill Odette as punishment for trying to fool him than just keep her from going and force her to marry him?
    - I also don't get why Derek made the wrong vow, I mean he didn't say a different name nor did he intentional think of someone other than the right person, but since he gestured at Bridgette that's all the magic needed?
    - also how did Odette learn the cure to her spell anyway, did rothbard also tell her how to break it?
    - Ubertha decides to still have the ball even though derrek says he intends to marry someone he's already met, I get it's to break the spell and all but she doesn't know that, why does she care about holding a ball to convince her son to get married if he already told her he is going to? Really she should have just canceled it and he should have told her he found Odette
I was gonna keep going but this is probably long enough :p

It's Disney scraps the film. Somethings are good like the prince and princess knowing each other for a long time. (It seems like what Aurora and Philip's lives would have been like if they invited Maleficent so she wouldn't get petty. Doesn't help that they rip off Sleeping Beauty alot in this film). But then they mess it up by making them not learn anything about each other. At least Disney shows the romantic interest talking in the older films. All of them have a meet-cute.
But Rotbarth is a half baked Jafar with all the legal talk (Jafar made the sultan do it but to the common people they wouldn't know.) The frog is terrible. I think the turtle has potential. if Odette had a character so she could understandably be upset about her father dying and worried about her kingdom and also freaked out about being a swan a easygoing and calm turtle would contrast and help Odette be grounded.

  • @Alejandroigarabide
    @Alejandroigarabide 4 года назад +4

Today I saw this movie for the first time and I'm surprised there's a point that no reviewer ever brings up: We go from Odette learning the curse's rules to Derek practicing how to hunt, and then back to the lake where Odette already talks to the comic-relief animals and knows Jean-Bob and Speed enough to call them her "best friends".
Again, I had never watched it before, so at first I thought Netflix had deleted the scene where she first meets them and learns that the spell allows her to talk to animals, but checking other sources (wikipedia, TV tropes, IMDB, other reviews and even searching "Swan Princess deleted scenes" on youtube) it turns out that there never was such deleted scene. She met them and discovered she could talk to animals OFF-SCREEN. Why is no one talking about this? Why doesn't it even appear in TV Tropes' headscratchers page?
Even Brother Bear, wich I did not like, had a scene establishing the rules about animal talk and kept them consistent. It didn't go from Kenai learning he's a bear to Kenai already talking to previously-not-talking animals and knowing Koda enough to call him his brother after meeting him off-screen.
It's like jumping from the first act to the second act without a scene bridging them.

    Warning; long as hell comment.
Ok, I finally saw the whole movie again after 20 years and I can't believe how much of the movie is actually rage inducing. First of all, they needed to explain in better detail about Odette's birth, as in what happened to her mother. Shouldn't William have been present if it was her final moment?? Next, Rothbarts motivation for the taking of the kingdom should've been much more fleshed out rather than "I just want it". Third, how can they teach children that you only love a person for their looks?! The two did not want anything to do with each other for the past several years, but they see how hot they turned out as adults and now they're all goo goo eyes at each other? No, that's not how love works, not at all!
Now, here's how I think the story would've been better:
    1. William mourns the loss of his wife (the queen obviously), who died giving birth to their daughter. Seeing her little face for the first time eases his pain and he vows to always be there whenever she needs him.
    2. The whole idea to have Derek and Odette spend ever summer together stays the same, but they only dislike each other for the first half of the first summer. Here's an idea for a scene I had to make the animosity disappear: Derek and Odette are walking through the woods near the palace by order of their parents to make them stop fighting and simply talk to each other. A few minutes in, Odette isnt watching where she steps and falls into a small pit of mud, needless to say this would cause her much distress. Derek is about to laugh, but seeing her to the point of tears causes him to rethink this and instead grabs a branch with his left hand and offers his right hand to get her out. Odette, surprised by his small act of kindness, reaches out to grab Derek's hand, only for the branch to snap and now have the both of them in the mud. Odette wipes the mud off of her face, Derek does the same but the way he does it makes it look like he has a beard and bushy eyebrows, along with his hair being spiky. Odette sees this and after a few seconds of staring (Derek: what??), she starts laughing at his ridiculous appearance. Pulling out a small mirror from her pocket, she faces it at Derek, who stares in shock before, surprisingly, joins Odette in the laughter. Rogers, having lost sight of them, hears their laughter, pulls them out of the mud and escorts them back to the palace, with Derek and Odette smiling at each other. The summer ends and the two kids eagerly await the next one.
    3. Have the montage now be about Derek and Odette's growing relationship (have them both do a little nonsense with the slingshot and tomatoes to obnoxious people, have Odette teach Derek to have a better poker face, have him teach her archery, small scenes of them going on little dates [hand holding->leaning on each other->first kiss. Etc]).
    4. Because of #3, Derek and Odette NOW have reasons as to why they love each other, so the "arrange the marriage" announcement now holds more water (btw, they both announce it, not just one of them).
    5. Odette and William return to their kingdom set some final affairs in order before the ceremony and on the way there, they are intercepted by Rothbart. Derek finds out about the assault and rushes to save them both, only to meet a mortally wounded William. He manages to tell Derek about Rothbart, how he took Odette away and he entrusts Derek to find Odette before dying. Derek kneels down in sadness next to William, remembering the good days he spent with him as a child.
    6. Rothbart reveals his motives to Odette (now a swan); he had nothing growing up and he saw how everyone else was happy and never even bothered to give him so much as a glance. He found out that he had an aptitude for retaining information from anything he read, especially magic text. He made a living as an enchanter, but it was never enough because there were other wizards who kept one uping him in skill and magic; even among his fellow wizards, he felt like an outcast. Bitter and resentful, he looked for stronger spells to show his worth, until he found the forbidden arts, spells that no other wizard dared to learn. Seeing as he would be the only one who would be brave enough to attempt it, Rothbart read the ancient texts and mastered the deadly magic. He became a powerful warlock, unrivaled and with no one who would dare challenge him, he used his powers to claim whatever he pleased. Unfortunately, the power of the forbidden arts corrupted his mind to the point where he decided that if he can claim mere trinkets and small fortunes, then a kingdom would be no hassle (Rothbart: No longer will anyone else look down upon me, princess. I will take your father's kingdom, I will rule over the land and everyone will worship me!). Rothbart leaves Odette on the lake, who cranes her neck back in sadness and wonders where Derek is now.
    7. After a lengthy investigation, Derek finds Bridgette, who informs him about Rothbart's whereabouts. She explains that while everyone else fears him, only she understands his motivations. She tried caring for him when he was a child, but due to the resentment in his heart, he kept shutting her out and when he left on his own, she always made sure to know where he was at all times. She tells him the location of Swan Lake and they both ride off.
    8. Odette tries to reason with Rothbart over his looming attack by saying that there are still good people in the world, Rothbart argues "then where were they when I was scavenging for whatever I could find? Bah, it doesn't matter anymore; soon I'll take what is mine.
Odette: All this power will not bring you happiness, Rothbart.
Rothbart: You're right; happiness must be taken. You should learn that now.)
    9. Derek and bridgette arrive just as Rothbart is about to leave and he confronts him with William's sword (bestowed to him before his death). After a lengthy battle as the Great Animal (with actual powers instead of just animal abilities, Odette flying to distract him while Derek shoots his arrows at his wings to ground Rothbart, etc.), Derek pierces Rothbart through the heart, making him turn back and breaking the spell on Odette. Realizing that his end is near, Bridgette offers Rothbart some comfort by reminding him that she never left him, she always stood a few steps behind him to make sure he was always in her sight. Realizing that there are in fact good people just like Odette said, Rothbart was filled with regret, especially with the knowledge that he killed her father. Odette, not knowing hate in her heart, forgives him for everything. Bridgette hugs Rothbart in a mix of sadness and calm, he smiles softly before turning to stardust. Derek and Odette embrace before returning to the castle (offering Bridgette a place there).
    10. The usual happy endings (sorry, got tired. Heheh.)
There. The point I'm trying to get across is that people have to try to make these types of movies, not just go formulaic and contrived. I've seen people write fanfiction about several types of genre's and they put their all into making something they're passionate about (I'm one of them). So yeah, you have to put EFFORT into your story.

How I would fix this movie.
    1. The music-
There’s way too many fucking pointless musical numbers. Only use them when there’s a point.
    2. The characters relationship with Ralph Bart-
Make it where they never banished Ralph Bart, but rather he’s the advisor for one of the kingdoms. Where the king/queen trust Ralph more than they do their own son/daughter.
    3. Slowly develop the character’s relationship-
Sure you can start it out where they dislike or even hate each other. But maybe show them slowly growing as a couple, such as sharing common interests, having good times, them helping each other become better people, and then eventually start dating. No one hates someone one day and than randomly goes “Oh wait she’s hot so let’s screw each other”.

Derek is right about Odette, she is super hot! She is kind too but beside that, this lady has no personality. Odette had a lot when she was young; adventurous, brave, confident, charming etc. As an adult, the princess is soooooo boring X) Heck Queen Uberta is more interresting than her and she's a secondary character; same for Rodger; this man sarcastic side is hilarious!

This movie was just...OK. It was nice to look at at times, some of John Cleese's lines were funny but it has a very uncomfortable mix of trying to be Disney and yet at the same time not. There needs to be another animated version of Swan Lake that is a darker perhaps in the vein of older Disney animations like Fantasia or Bambi. The more famous ending where both the lovers defeat Rothbart by sacrificing their own lives can be kept (Whether they live or not can be ambiguous.) And keep the Tchaikovsky music and arrange in the same way the music for Sleeping Beauty was done. It would be cool if maybe Laika did something of that nature since their movies tend to be more risk-taking and hearkening back to animated classics of yore.

Just a little FYI, Prince Derek's name in the Swan Lake Play is Siegfried. And before any of you would think, no, he's not Siegfried from the Soul Calibur Games, but it would be could if Prince Derek would carry a 7 foot two handed Zweihander to fight the Great Animal. And have flowing long blonde hair with a scar on his right eye.

9:44 theoretically, it is possible to catch an arrow mid-flight. Unlike a bullet which would simply pass through the person's flesh if he/she tries to catch it, an arrow's momentum and trajectory can be intercepted. That being said, it is still not advised as it is extremely dangerous and unlikely due to the speed and reaction time a person would need (not to mention, it's unreliable to just guess when the arrow would come by when you're not looking at it, let alone have your back turned to it). It's much more preferable to just dodge or use a shield. Still, it is possible to catch an arrow as some tricksters such as Lars Anderson had shown (not supporting his archery style, btw) and it's made a bit easier if it's from a longer distance or a less-strong bow, thus giving the catcher more time to judge and react.
