Love this book. It took me a bit to adjust to its storytelling approach. But once it clicked, everything about the book just became great. it's overwhelming with charm. Has one of the best friendships ever written.
I love the scene where we get a flashback about Father Chains warning about how to behave infront of a bondsmagi and the next scene is Locke saying “Nice bird , arsehole” to him. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing at it
It took me two tries to get into Locke Lamora mostly because I wasn’t prepared for its style. But when I came back the second time around, I was here for it and damn, what a ride.
That's good to know. I started it and liked it but haven't been hooked yet. Mainly because of the writing style. I hoping that if I start again, with less distraction I will be hooked.
I read the Gentleman Bastards series last year and LOVED it! The banter, the action, the friendship🥹. All of it was top tier, but I’m going to need book 4 soon.
I really enjoyed The Lies of Locke Lamora! Haven't read the sequels yet but the world and characters are just so charming (just like Austin and Richard from 2ToRamble).
Found your channel through searching for reviews on this book. Great discussion thanks! Quite a few 'big' booktubers seem to dislike the book and I can't really see why.
"What does it feel you're only half the name? You're a bastard but you aren't a gentleman?" BBBBBUUUUUURRRRNNNNNN HAHAHAHAAHA I would have NEVER expected it from Austin. He is learning from Rich. It's like Sansa with Littlefinger
I love your podcast so so much! When I first found your channel, I came for the fantasy discussion, but now I definitely stay for your great personalities which work so well together. I could happily listen to you guys ramble on all day about literally any topic. keep doing what you’re doing! ❤🙌🙌
You guys need to read ‘The Bound and the Broken’. Just read the first novella, it’s only 90 pages (also the eBook is free) and you will definitely want to read further. Book one is kinda mid but still enjoyable but the second book is much much better. It’s like stormlight, in the way that it feels a lot different than anything you’ve read while still relying on some classic fantasy tropes. It feels like a love letter to classic dragon-rider fantasy.
Otherwise… I’m glad you mentioned the impact of the sinking of all the gold. In many books where religion comes up, it just has no emotional impact or connection for me at all, but the execution in the Gentleman Bastards is just excellent. As you say, the characters *care*, deeply, and it gets the reader to care as well. Not just the caring but also the meaning, I think - the religion infuses meaning and purpose to their actions that otherwise wouldn’t necessarily be there, something that I think comes up in the second book to good effect as well. As for the actions-implied-through-dialogue - nice catch! I hadn’t consciously noticed it in this series, but it is such a neat trick and I’ll definitely keep an eye out for how it’s done whenever I get around to rereading the series. I think it’s probably done with more subtlety and skill here by Scott Lynch, but it’s a trick that I noticed was used extensively in The Witcher series as well, and I did find it fascinating there. (I haven’t enjoyed the Witcher series all that much in general, but there are some aspects to how it’s written that are at least interesting to observe and ponder, hah. Though I do always find myself wondering how much some of that has shifted in translation…)
@2ToRamble hard to say, I went into book 2 so excited after the first and really flew through it. 3rd was the weakest in my opinion but hoping book 4 will redeem it, roll on 2024. Merry Xmas too lads
I love this book so much. Lies of Locke Lamora is to me what Red Rising is to Austin. Great review and thanks for giving me some entertainment throughout the work day!
I loved this book. It took me awhile to get into the style, but honestly after I heard the audiobook it really helped. Everything just clicked and I absolutely loved it.
I absolutely loved this book. It was top 3 fantasy novel for me. I think the structure of this book is incredible. I truly think it’s cinematic, meaning, it is paced just right and knows when to slow down and switch gears. Lynch absolutely nailed it. I want the movie.
What other 2 are in your top 3? And oh yea Lynch did great - maybe a TV show would be better, every episode having a flashback(intermission) that then goes to present day situation and ends the episode just before the next flashback is to come. Either way adaptation would be awesome
I wish you could go back to doing the characters, plot, emotional impact, prose, world building sections BEFORE the spoiler section, I feel like I get a lot more enthusiastic about a book when you describe its individual strengths and weaknesses in a spoiler-free manner than when I can't even see anything more detailed than the total rating without seeing spoilers.
I read this a few months ago and really liked it. I'm planning to read the next 2 Gentlemen Bastards in 2024... possibility in between a few more John Gwynne books. 🤔 while waiting for the last Red Rising book, I believe I have some excellent reading ahead.
My two pence on waiting for the fourth book is, even if you only just are able to read just the first book, "The Lies of Locke Lamora" it is still very much worth it!
This was a great book and a great review, keep making awesome videos! Have you guys thought about possibly doing a Godzilla Minus One review? That movie was amazing!!
Thankya!! AND WE LOVE THAT MOVIE! We actially wanted to record an episode on it but stopped ourselves because it’s not usually our type of content. But so with you. Incredible movie!
I LOVED this book and I’m so glad y’all decided to review it 😭😭. I haven’t been watching because most of the books you guys have reviewed I haven’t read yet. Mental health has gotten in the way of reading recently but I’m getting back into it slowly. I’d love to see a review of the assassins apprentice then royal assassin (as I am enjoying the second book even more than the first). My review of LoLL it was a 4.8/5 if I was being super picky. But this book is so so good. I loved the way the characters interacted with each other and the world around them. I love Scott Lynch’s prose and IN MY OPINION comparing it to Mistborn is a disservice because I really didn’t like the simplicity and repetitiveness of Mistborn. I only read about 75 pages (yes I will continue) but it definitely didn’t hook me and the characters aren’t as interesting as in Lies of Lock Lamora, I also think that the characters are more witty and intelligent especially when it comes to their disguises and their ways about heisting. So glad y’all made this video!! Thank you!! (:
@@2ToRamble I really love your guys dynamic and how very familiar and playful mean Austin is to Richard in some videos, im glad you two are contributing to booktube

The issue with your wine idea is that he wanted to take out the nobles children as well and you can't guarantee that all the children and adults are going to drink the wine. Whereas if you turn the entire spire into a gas chamber nobody can escape.
Have y’all thought about doing a weekly or monthly wrap up of everything y’all are reading these videos are great but if I haven’t read the book I only get like 10 minutes of content
We have and will look into doing this! We are pushing to two episodes a week soon so this could be helpful to keep people in the loop - we will check it out!
Have tried to read it 3x. My problem is the two biggest things I don't like as far as book tropes are anything on ships and thief protagonists. I know, odd, huh? So, this being about thievery pretty much means I will never get thru it. And that makes me sad.
I agree! The intro to The Name of the Wind did hook me much more strongly than the intro to The Lies of Locke Lamora; I actually found myself rolling my eyes several times over at some of the conceits at the beginning of TLoLL, specifically Locke’s childhood before the temple. But I’m glad that I persevered through the beginning! TLoLL is *excellent* overall, as well as just being a heck of a lot of fun to read, heh.
Hah, good series names? Malazan Book of the Fallen... when you start and finish you understand why. Banks - Culture. Commonwealth Saga - Peter Hamilton. Noble House - James Clavell. Also: Merphy Napier will die on that hill to protect this book how good it is.

Man was I disappointed 🤣 I know I'm the minority 🤣 no disrespect to anyone who likes the books/series ofc, it was just not for me.
