Saw it today in the cinema live broadcast. Very dynamic and a little flashy but generally wonderful. Only drawback is you never feel Cumberbatch is on the edge of real madness rather than actor pretending to be mad. Actors playing Claudius, Hoeatio and Ophelia all very good too.
In my memory of studying Hamlet, Hamlet is not mad...he is pretending so that he can prove his uncle murdered his father, the king.... I saw Hamlet in London this past fall..Benedict was wonderful.
Yup. He's just pretending to be mad. There's actually are a few questions that have been haunting me and neither did my lecturer can solve it. Why did Ophelia died for? Because of love or because of the pressure of her father and Laertes or because she's really crazy? AND, is Hamlet gay? Is his love for Ophelia real? He liked Horatio didn't he. :'|
+hazyjellyfish54eva The debate about the nature of Hamlet's madness is an enduring one that will last forever. I studied the play for A Level English in the 70's and am still fascinated by it today. My conclusion is that Hamlet is very close to the edge but his plan of faking madness to expose Claudius gives him the purpose to keep it all together in a very edgy and dangerous way for those around him.
Ah, high school memories. A steady diet of Dickens, Shakespeare and Austen. Occasionally Hardy and the Bronte sister what wrote Wuthering Heights. If it wasn't Great Expectations, then it was Macbeth ( nearly drove me crazazy) and if not that, then it was Northanger Abbey. Macbeth was almost my downfall during GCSEs in English Lit. but luckily we sailed through: -)

I absolutely adored his performance!
Is there a DVD of Hamlet starring Benedict Cumberbatch?
