You beat me to it! I actually had plans to eventually do a special talking about the MP36 but it looks like you beat me to it! Oh well, one less thing on my agenda now. LOL.
I've heard good things about the Frontrunner service in the SLC region, would love to ride one day. I hope they end up electrifying and getting Stadler KISS EMUs someday like Caltrain did
Mike, very good facts and the history explaining about the MP36PH locomotives and talking about their others as well, who knows what will replace these locomotives on all commuter lines across the country! Motive Power Inc. will continuously producing and re manufacturing old locomotives into new generations for the MP36PH into the future.
They're all over, They're my favorite locomotive, awesome double engine diesel electric track running machine, it fills me with joy to see the Mp36ph-3c
Very incredible & impressive Educational Episode in Maryland M.A.R.C Commuter Service Marc Has 26 of MPI MP36PH-3C Numbering # 10 to 35 For Penn Line ,Brunswick line, Perryville lines, & Camden Line
the GP32 with the open walkways is so weird looking but definitely cool - I wish more passenger locos had the open air walkways just to spice it up hahah
This is really interesting. I didn’t know about the other variants of this type. When I first saw sun-rail’s locos, I was so confused why it had platforms on its sides. It’s cool they were actually converted from freight locomotives. Sadly I think the MP36 locomotives on Caltrain are being replaced with electric trains to accompany the California bullet train project and for better efficiency in power and braking. Great videos
Ah, cool. Didn't know that. When the service first debuted, the Baby Bullets only went as far south as San Jose (Tamien). All the trains that went to Gilroy were locals or limited stop runs.
The MP36 is powered by a EMD 16-cylinder four-stroke water-cooled 645F3B diesel engine/prime mover. It has 3,600 HP and a top speed of up to 110 MPH. Wheel configuration is B-B. Locomotive axle arrangement is Bo’Bo’. Technical Specifications.
Current roster of MPXpress locomotives today: MP36PH-3S (Metra) MP36PH-3C (Virginia Railway Express, MBTA, Metrolink, Front Runner, MARC, Cal Train, West Coast Express, New Mexico Rail Runner Express, and Northstar) MP40PH-3C (Sound Transit and GO Transit) MP54AC (GO Transit, aka MP40PHTC-T4AC) MP32PH-Q (Sun Rail, rebuilt from MARC EMD GP40WH-2s)
There could potentially be a Facelifted model of the MP36 that can be converted to AC traction and be Tier 4 compliant called the MP36PH-AC, and potentially Hybrid Variants called the MP36E and MP54E.
Wabtec also own Brush Traction, LH Group and Hunslet Engine Co. in the UK, so it would be interesting to see if Motive Power and Brush end up collaborating on loco design, perhaps producing a UK version of one of Motive Power's designs.
My plan is to do a “Types of Passenger Locomotives” video like I did on the freight ones and I will most definitely include the Trirail locomotives in that one.
The MP36PH-3C locomotives have a Caterpillar HEP Generator. The “P” in the name means the engines have Passenger Gearing and the “H” means they are HEP Equipped. The “3” is the locomotives are equipped with “Dash 3” Electronics. The “MP” means they were manufactured by MotivePower. The “36” in the name means the locomotives have 3,600 HP.
With GE Transportation systems now being part of Wabtec that opens up lots of possibilities for MPI. Instead of the expensive MP54 genset locomotive, they now have the possibility of plunking a tier 4 GEvo engine into their locomotives instead, that would almost certainly be less expensive than the genset setup. Though I have a hunch MPI may be looking to design a new locomotive that meets NEC loading gauge requirements as the MPxpress series are full height and can't operate under Northeast loading gauges. A heavy modernization program needs to happen too to keep up with the vastly more modern Chargers.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), a public transit system which runs commuter rail services around Boston, MA and branch out to the surrounding towns, cities and suburbs, owns and operates two MP36 3600 horsepower diesel-electric passenger locomotives. They are MP36PH-3Cs and built by mpi in boise, idaho in 2010 and entered service on February 7 and 14, 2011. They are based on the MPXpress series or family of diesel-electric passenger locomotives built by mpi in boise, idaho and services various commuter railroads throughout North America including the United States and Canada. To date, more than 220 of these types of locomotives had been built. As of 2023, mpi no longer lists the MPXpress as a product on their home page. Both units are currently being rebuilt by mpi with completion anticipated in 2025 or 2026, because the company is waiting to complete all the F40PH-3C rebuilds. Five models of the MPXpress series have been built: - MP36PH-3S (which no longer exists because Metra, a commuter rail in the downtown Chicago metropolitan area rebuilt all their MP36PH-3S units to MP36PH-3Cs between 2015 and 2020). - MP36PH-3C (the original variant of the MPXpress, built starting in 2003). - MP40PH-3C (these are used by GO Transit in Toronto, Ontario Canada, which is the only operator of the model and built starting in 2007). - MP54AC (GO Transit in Toronto is the only operator of this model and the first unit of this type emerged in late 2015). - MP32PH-Q (SunRail is the only operator of this model and these engines are rebuilt GP40WH-2s originally operating on MARC the Maryland Area Regional Commuter system in the Maryland area, mainly Baltimore, between 1994 and 2011 and were replaced by newer engines). These engines were first delivered to SunRail for the opening of the line in central Florida in May 2014. Built starting in 2013 and ending in 2018. The MPXpress units were built starting in 2003 with the MP36PH-3C as the original variant, meaning the first produced of the type. Units were still being built for commuter railroads in the United States and Canada as late as 2015. The last units of the type were assembled and delivered to GO Transit as MP54ACs in mid-2019.
Morris and Knudsen also built the M6 EMU's for Metro North's new Haven line in the 1990's using the same design as the original budd M2 and the slightly newer Tokyu Railcar corporations M4's with the budd carbody
I know of a good successor: the MP60ACI - a battery powered 6000hp MPXpress locomotive with two prime movers rated at 3000 hp and these could run off of renewable diesel
The mp54 is the largest passenger locomotive in general but is dual engined which means the largest diesel passenger single engine locomotive is the p42dc
Metra's mp36s are the heaviest that MK/MPI Boise built. The design was completely new at the time and originally did not meet the FRA crashworthy standards. Allegedly, concrete was added in the locomotive noses to meet those standards. These units are restricted from the UP lines because they weigh close to 300,000 lbs. Too heavy for 100yr old bridges (To put in into comparison, UPs heaviest locomotive weighs 410,000 lbs, and that is spread over 6 axles, instead of 4.)
I always thought the MP36PH series was built by EMD. I’ve seen a couple of these locomotives on Metrolink routes and I’m surprised that not one of these locomotives are being operated by Amtrak. If they were they be on Amtrak commuter routes like the Pacific Surfliner or the San Joaquin express. Do you think on the next train talk can you talk about the new Charger Locomotives? Thanks and have a great day.
When I was younger I always thought that these were a special model for the F59PHI
Same!🤣
The headlight beazels ar simulare.
Doesn't metra use a paint job that amtrak uses.
me too! They have a really similar design and dimensions
LMAO SAME, I'm so glad I'm not the only one

The MP36 is a very successful commuter locomotive

Very beautiful and educated video about MP36s.
Thanks, Christopher!
CoasterFan2105 You’re welcome.
Fun Fact: The MP36PH-3S is basically an F40 with a newer EMD 645.
Also, the MP36PH-3C is essentially an uprated F40PH-2C
I never knew that.
And a streamlined nose and different cab...
It's literally a wolf in sheep's clothing, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
So that’s why MBTA mp36ph’s on the mbta sound exactly like and look like F40PH-2c’s from the back!
It’s like Mid-Day when you uploaded this because my Time zone is EST
Same.
Same, I live in NY
MP36PH-3S: Static inverter
MP36PH-3C: Caterpillar head end power
Awesome video, Mike. I sure learned something new today. I always enjoy seeing MP36PH-3C locomotives on my local commuter railroad, VRE.
Thank you! I really like the MP series too. The VRE ones have a neat paint scheme.

It’s a nice spot!
I Love those Trains!

Metra only had MP36PH-3Ss until 2015
Metra, railrunner, amtrak California and other names that have those locomotives
amtrak california doesnt
@@johannesjacobus6892 Yeah, they kinda do. They bought JPBX's MP36s for them in 2002

Nice video ;) I'm so glad to see some MP36PHs :D
Thank you! I knew that there were a lot of requests for this one, so I'm happy I was finally able to get it done!
My favorite locomotives are the F59PHI and MP36PH
Holy shoot I’ve been waiting for something on these engines! Great job Mike!
How funny, you posted a video on the day my trip started and this one on my last day
That's pretty cool! Friday is always a great day to start a trip

I wondered for a long while until one of your older videos, thanks!
I had a feeling you were gonna talk about these locomotives.
those mp54ac was quiet compare to all of them
A few ideas for future Train Talk episodes:
-Metrolink Commuter Rail
-EMD SD40 series
-EMD SD70 series
-Siemens Charger
-Odd/Unique steam locomotive designs (such as Duplexes, Triplexes, Camelbacks, Cab-forwards, Steam Turbines, etc)
These are good ones. Although the SC-44 is still new so he probably wouldn’t do that one
I have a SCAX Train Talk script for him to use
Great video ....I like it!!!!.....All the best from Romania
I have been waiting a while for this!! Thanks Mike!
Such a pretty design
First! Because your name Is Coasterfan 2105 and the real Coaster 2105 has a new creepy horn, you should add the new creepy horn to the intro!

Yes finally someone makes a video on this locomotive love the thumbnail
I love the MP36PH
I am from Idaho, that is so cool that they are built here
Metrolink needs to repaint the MP36s into Ribbons, and give them Caltrain P2s with bells 1 & 2.
My guess is that they will begin going through overhauls some time within the next couple of years.
could you do a video more about uta frontrunner train, if so that would be great! also cool video!
Thanks, Jaron! I’d like to do a 4K update video for the Frontrunner, so hopefully in the not too distant future!
