  • Mariam Shaikh and Melissa Powel talk about sketching and paper prototyping. Have you ever struggled with how to get from an idea to a high fidelity prototype? Every design has to start somewhere and even at Google we often start with low fidelity prototyping options such as sketching and paper prototyping. After all, the fidelity of your prototype should match the fidelity of your idea, so stop worrying and start sketching.

    Well, Was going through many digital prototyping tools videos. and coming through this video was the best thing. Within an hour I created 15+ visualizations, user interactions using pen and paper. At any time I can quickly make altercation. Watched the following video too on digital prototyping and that gave more insights. Thanks Team. It's wonderfull to see how ppl at google are doing prototyping and learning tricks .

    I find that digital prototyping is most effective for me when it comes to ideation. While I think paper prototyping provides a fun outlet to get creative and get those juices flowing, I believe digital prototyping is more effective in the sense that we get a feel for what the final product could look like. Since most projects now take form on a digital platform, it also feels like a surefire way to keep things consistent.

      A former UX/UI person from Twitter and Meta told me paper is great when getting feedback because people feel more compelled to giving feedback as the product doesn't seem finished. So I think it really depends what type of feedback you're looking for/what stage you are at.

    I don’t tend to use paper prototyping - I sketch out my ideas on Paper on iPad, it lets my move things around so easily, copy/paste certain element, duplicate sketches, etc. I usually import these into Overflow and hotspot them together (doing the User Flows at the same time). I’ve done paper prototyping in the past, and found some of the interactions more time consuming to create.

    I don't see how the paper prototyping is going to be faster than using simple tools like powerpoint or basic wireframe tools such as Mockingbot. It will be easier to share, to modify and environmental friendly. Paper prototyping is only good when you just want to show the layout or something super basic. When you try to show things like shadow and color, then it's time to move to digital prototyping. But it might work really well when you need to present the prototype to customer or people from the external. Paper prototyping seems to be fun to do together. It can draw better attention, hence create better engagement. For this reason, it's worth to try it out sometimes.

    • @iLoveTurtlesHaha
      @iLoveTurtlesHaha 5 лет назад

      I think they are trying to show the entire process from idea creation in your head to completion. The logical next step for us humans (after the lightbulb) is to draw a sketch because it gives us tactic feedback and so makes us visualize our ideas better. Then the next logical step is to put it in digital format. If you skip any step you might jump the gun and not get a solid foundation. But you do whatever works for you because at the end of the day all that matters is you get your prototype out to get feedback.

    Paper - Pin and Ink - I threw that stuff out years ago - I think I have some old yellowed tracing paper somewhere in my old flat files of old time art work from back in college 1978, Where do you buy paper, pins and ink? I still have my old oil paint kit - can we use that. I like to use Photoshop and Powerpoint sometime Illustrator. I thought paper and pin and ink was damaging the environment - I don't ever carry paper money anymore - with direct deposit and plastic - I make all my purchases - but then I've been waiting for the Mark of the Beast so I could buy, sell and trade again. Why do we have computers - if we are going to use paper and ink - that stuff is so nasty - smears and leaks in your pockets. paper and ink carry germs - that stuff is naasstea. Besides with a fast computer - I can knock that stuff out way faster than messing around with old time technology - How about a steam locomotive can we use that - maybe the coal from the coal car. Google team actually uses paper - they must be trying to help people keep a job that otherwise technology took over. I was holding off on upgrading my computer for them to come out with one that sketches out - what I'm thinking. Looking forward to getting rid of the key board and mouse myself. Gee Wiz - paper and ink - what will they think of next. How about sand script with clay pallets and sticks, wouldn't that be better?

    Sounds great at google, but this kind of approach seems to me like taking designers back to kindergarten level, let's be as non-technical as possible and stick to glue, scissors and crayon-playing, what about prototyping web applications using Plasticine? will that be the next thing? I think UX designers can be more competent (and better paid) if they learn harder skills such as HTML, CSS and why not, Javascript.

    • @yashar-el

    • @peteabc1
      @peteabc1 6 лет назад

      I understand they're ux researchers and researches are doing well what researches do...no one knows or understands what, but sometimes someone expect them to create some output and then again no one cares for a long time..
      But as a practical designing technique, all this playing with scissors and paper needs to be included in price of the project. If you can be competitive with this technique, good for you. But digital prototyping is so much faster and faster to create variants and change order of elements.. Copy paste, 5s with mouse and you're done. And you see how it really looks on the screen of your device and with simple hyperlinks you can simulate actions. Simply said I don't see any advantage in this paper prototyping. And to be honest, it's infantile.

    • @DavidLovrien
      @DavidLovrien 6 лет назад +6

      The underlying concept is simple: stay low-fidelity during initial design. Everything changes in the early stages and the faster you can make adjustments the better. Sketching on paper or whiteboard is almost always faster than prototyping in software tools. As the design begins to take shape, you increase fidelity. The paper prototype in the video may push that boundary a bit, but working with physical media can sometimes bring out problems you wouldn't think of in prototyping software.
