😢😢😢😢
Just imagine this invasion happening in Australia. CRAZY 😜
You weren't wrong about it being a disaster movie. Disasters aren't necessarily natural. The alien invasion caused a disaster. Lots of infrastructure was destroyed and lots of people died.
Dakota was the best part of this film....she shined in "Uptown Girls" as well
Hi, you might have interest in Boondocks Saints (1 and 2) and Unthinkable.
The actors portraying the grandparents were the stars of the original movie from 1953.
Speaking of..... has Mary seen that version? For me, it is the best version of that story (well, aside from the radio drama the terrified a good part of the country WAY back when)..... like "Excalibur" is the best telling of the King Arthur tale and "A Challenge for Robin Hood" is my favorite telling of THAT story.
While this movie does have impressive visual effects, I still prefer the original 1953 version for its storytelling and effects. Plus, there was a "sequel" television show that wasn't half bad, either.
oh, lore!
@@MaryCherryOfficial same kind of cameo was in the "Time Machine" remake, the one starring Guy Pearce.
Wait, this was a remake?
@@GrimmEnt. written in 1898 by hg wells, adapted into a radio play haloween 1938 by orsen wells which terrified the public, adapted to film in 1953 and remade with this version.
Dakota Fanning always was an uncannily good actress as a kid. Her performance in this is quite amazing. The Tripod horn will forever be haunting. The grandparents at the end of the film were Gene Barry and Ann Robinson the stars of the 1953 version. The director put them in as an homage to the film
She annoyed me in this movie. I couldn't stand her. I wanted her to be harvested so bad so I didn't have to listen to her screaming and crying the whole time.
In adulthood, her little sister has surpassed her, though.
One of my favorite performances of hers is in Steven Spielberg's Taken. Phenomenal. And of course Man on Fire.
_"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it."_
Having been a big fan of the original I was pleasantly surprised by this modernization, and the more I watch it over the years the more I enjoy more subtle aspects of it.
why'd you quote MiB lol
@@danholmesfilm Did you not watch the video? Her comments about people acting panicky and irrational? There is your answer.
I've always had a sneaky appreciation for this film for showing EXACTLY what fleeing an apocalypse with your family looks like. It's not all cutesy like the World War Z family, it's a lot of screaming and "SHUT UP LET ME THINK" and "I WANT TO SEE MOM" and confusion. It's stressful, but it's stressful in a way that's adding to the whole vibe.
Plus "Dakota screams the whole time" is simply an untrue observation from others. She is panicking for the initial car scene and when that's done, she only lets out a scream VERY appropriate moments, like a crowd swarming their car and smashing the windshield, turning around and being face to face with a tripod camera, etc.
Great reaction! Always love watching you! ❤ What will really blow your mind is that H.G. Wells wrote this original story between 1895-1897 and it was first published in 1898! The story was made into a Halloween radio broadcast and was narrated live by Orson Welles on Oct 30th, 1938. That radio broadcast caused panic by several listeners as they thought it was a "real" alien invasion! The story was also adapted into a 1953 movie by the same name, set in 1953 Southern California. Pretty cool back story! Stay Amazing Mary ❤🍒
To explain it Mary. The heat ray in this film acts like a microwave that heats up water to the point of evaporation. So because humans are 50% made of water the heat ray upon hitting their victims evaporates the water in the body turning their victims into dust.

@@njw5869 45%-75% depending on many factors.
H.G. Wells is the father of Science Fiction and many of his novels
have been adapted to film.
War of The Worlds (1898) is the original Alien Invasion story.
No particular main characters of the novel.
You just see how many of them deal with this unforseen event.
First on audio, the 1938 radio play broadcast on Halloween narrated by Orson Wells threw the audience into a major panic like the invasion was real and it made headline news as an major spectacle.
Then on the big screen as an George Pal production with award winning effects in 1953, ahead of it's time in filmmaking followed by a syndicated tv series (1988-1990) that was an continuation from the film and pushed the envelope of Sci-fi/suspense/horror .
This 2005 adaption is Spielberg's 3rd Sci-Fi film of the 2000s.
The fear and paranoia of a post 9/11 world reacting to an attack from beyond.
Cruise's role as not a hero, a father trying to measure up and at least guide his kids through this ordeal does make good storytelling.
The cast, the crew, the sets, the effects and every moment till the end
shows you why Spielberg is the legend he is.
Following his other efforts with Kubrick's final production, Artificial Intelligence (2001)
and his first collaboration with Cruise, Minority Report (2002).
I was just going to mention that!
Dakota Fanning was THE child actress of the early 2000’s, girl knew now to be charming, cute, and super talented
Though prodigiously talented when she was a child, as an adult, she's now no more talented than any other high-profile actor of her generation.
Whoever told all these editors to insert memes every 5 seconds is on crack
Some memes are okay, but all the time is a bit distracting
Crack is whack!
I was wondering if she got a new editor, this video seems to be very different from her past reactions, even from very recent videos of hers.
Every time i see Tim Robbins, I can't help but think of Andy Dufresne from The Shawshank Redemption. My brain just cant get past it. 😂
Jacob's Ladder is the one to watch.
You can love or hate Cruise, can't deny he's one of the last true movie stars left. Shout out to Spielberg as well for outstanding cinematography and direction
Yes, he’s the real deal no doubt
Mary: “ I don’t understand why they won’t let more people onto the boat. I just don’t get it.”
_Meanwhile there are multiple alien attack ships RIGHT. THERE._
I think the crew was also worried about the weight on the ferry. There were a lot of people, and regardless of the tripods coming or not, the ferry will sink if there is too much weight (see various tragedies in Asia for overloaded ferries). My question is always, why did they let people drive their cars on? Maybe the plan was to get people with cars across first, then come back for pedestrian traffic, but of course the tripods coming suddenly threw a wrench into that plan.
Looks like in this universe Andy Dufranse will not finish his tunnel
At least he has Red"s voice (Morgan Freeman) to comfort him!
The location of Ray's house is in Bayonne, New Jersey, and the bridge is the Bayonne Bridge between Bayonne and Staten Island, New York. The elevated highway is NJ State Route 440. Many of the scenes are nods to earlier productions of War of the Worlds. Starting the movie in NJ is a nod to the Halloween night radio play done by Orson Wells in 1938. He began his version in a town called Grover's Mill, NJ. The energy shields for the War Machines was an addition from the 1953 version. The house scene was also based on the 1953 version. This was also very faithful to the original book written by H.G. Wells, and first published in 1898. One thing that all versions is that it happened at the time it was published/released.
FYI, it is Orson Welles.
I worked at the theater when this came out, I remember every show being sold out
It was the definition of summer blockbuster
Many years ago, my best friend's cousin was the general manager of a movie theater. She let us see movies for free whenever we wanted. We would go at least once a week for years, and this movie was one of the hundreds of movies I saw for free. Every major movie you can think of from the late 90s until maybe 2007, I probably saw it.
I specifically remember the night I saw this movie. The movie itself was entertaining, but what was more memorable was what happened when we left.
As soon as we stepped outside, the sky got super dark, and we started hearing thunder. As we began to drive, the sky began to light up with lightning. It was the worst lightning storm I ever saw in my entire life, with lightning streaking across the sky every few seconds the entire ride home. Even 20 years later, I've never seen anything like it.
It was just super eerie, but I was also worried about getting struck by lightning. It freaked me out quite a bit, but the storm eventually died down, and we got home safe. I'll never forget that night.
IMO, 2005 gave the greatest one-two punch by Steven Spielberg. He did both this and MUNICH in the same year. Speaking of which, MUNICH is a must watch, and easily one of his best and most politically daring works (and a huge stylistic and tonal departure for him too).
In the original novel, the beams from the tripods were called heat beams. In this movie, I would guess they are microwave lasers (Masers). The beam is so powerful that it is vaporizing the water in the body and cells. It also expanse why the clothing is unaffected.
This was Steven Spielberg’s response to 9/11. But rather than making a movie about 9/11 head on, instead he uses one of the finest pieces of Science Fiction literature.
He also did MUNICH in the same year, which was another indirect response to 9/11, but through the lens of a historical event. When you take the 2 movies collectively, Spielberg went really hard tonally that year. I consider 2005 his greatest single year one-two punch largely for how uncompromisingly dark he went tonally.
dakota fanning was very talented but tom cruise was on a whole different level of being talented for this film which is why i love this film so freaking much
she did a series i loved called "the alienist" where she helps solve murders in the like 1800s i think from 2018. Equalizer 3 last year, a show called "ripley" and a m night shyamalan called "the Watchers" in 2024. She does a couple projects every year since forever ago. i think she is still great.
Also had a role in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
12:20 she's got an old soul,.. and the back that comes with it 😂👵 i like this version, and the original 50's version as well! great reaction!
Fun fact: The two grandparents at the very end of the movie are the two stars from the 1953 version of "The War of the Worlds", Gene Barry and Ann Robinson.
A much superior movie than this drek.
@@DarthTachyou are not wrong!
@@DarthTach Absolutely.
"serial killers would thrive in this scenario because people are desperate"
me: *laughs in Cloverfield*
If you want a disaster movie, this was a miniseries done in 1994 based off Stephen Kings "The Stand" a virus gets loose and kills 99.4 percent of the worlds population, the story is what happens to the survivors.
Yeaah, thats good tv series
The new one on paramount is okay, but Amber Heard is in it.🙄
The plane crash exterior set was built on the Universal backlot. When I went to Halloween Horror Nights in '07, they let us off the tram to walk through it. It was pretty incredible.
That slightly terrifying introduction was written 130 years ago and still holds up.
Miranda Otto, who played Tom Cruise's ex, played Eowyn (daughter of King Theoden, and wannabe bride of Aragorn) in 'The Lord of the Rings'. Tim Robbins (the crazy guy in the basement) was also in 'The Shawshank Redemption' as Andy Dufresne.
SpongeBob nerd?? That was one of my favorite episodes. Secret box!
Cruise might be a nut, but he's a damn fine actor and an excellent stuntman committed to his craft.
SAME Mary! I use to be a Tom Cruise hater. Just something about him, mostly the image everyone else portrays about him. Then I started watching War Of The World, Magnolia (a drama movie) and he suddenly grew on me. Dakota Fanning's acting is so underrated. Please go back to the Mission Impossible movies! 🥺😂
He's a great actor (well, at least very good), but he's also a terrible person.
@@libertyresearch-iu4fy Don't believe everything you read. We don't know these people personally.
The SpongeBob episode was The Secret Box. I know that episode far too well
hard part about being the parent in a very dire situation is either lose one of your kids or lose them both
Love this movie 🙂 They set the stakes and mood perfectly. You can feel the dread, chaos, and hopelessness. Especially in the scene with Tim Robbins in the basement. That was so tense 😬 And the crowd fighting over the van and the bodies in the river! It’s madness! I love it 😁
I have never wanted a kid to die in a movie as much as I did Robbie.
Oh, we got deadly spiders in America, though deaths are very rare. Most of us have learned to avoid them.
Arachnophobia would be a good movie to react to.
30:51 It's Boston, so "Let's hope..." Joel is here, and Tess is here, and Ellie is here,....
Wait.. you've never heard of war or the worlds? It was a novel by H. G. Wells, written in 1895. It was performed and broadcast live in 1938 by orson Welles on the radio and incited real panic by convincing people that listened to the broadcast, that a real Martin invasion was taking place. Then there was a movie made in 1953 about the novel..and this latest version happens to have tom cruise in it. How the heck have you never heard of war of the worlds???
Dakota Fanning was just in Equalizer 3 last starring with Denzel Washington again since they did Man On Fire when she was a kid. Great action series. Those movies are better than John Wick to me. ❤
I legit love this movie. I read the book as a kid and always wanted a proper depiction of the tripods. I was pretty satisfied.
This story first aired on live radio and some cities actually went into lockdown issuing public service announcements.
Parts of this movie was made on Staten Island near where I lived.
I know Dakota Fanning has done a lot of movies, one of the best performances I have seen her in is "I Am Sam" I hope I got the title right it also has Sean Penn, plays her Dad.
The author HG Well was a contemporary of Louis Pasteur who worked on bacteria. This was high tech science at the time.
great info as always - thank you for all the hard work and vigilance
I saw this in the theatre and I just now realized that the mom also was Eowyn in Lord of the Rings.
I saw this film in the theater. It was a very good experience. War Or The Worlds, just like Jurassic Park, is a horror film in disguise. Great reaction! 👍🏿
Something i noticed no one mentions. The wind going towards the storm i believe is them sucking the power out of everything so they could power their transport into the pods.
interesting bit of trivia - there was a previous version of this film released in 1953. The male and female lead of that version appear again in the Tom Cruise version - they are the grandparents at the end of the film
What's insane is that the original book was written before lasers, space ships, and the concept of mechs was even a thing. H.G Wells's imagination was so insane he came up with things that weren't even made or thought of yet
Thank you for appreciating how hard Ray is trying. He may not be the best, but he’s definitely trying his damnedest.
I love the og version of this film, it was one of the best I have ever seen. I won't say this version is better, but it is equally as great a movie. Both are great movies for the era they were released during.
The voice narration at the end is an actual reading of the ending of H. G. Wells novel.
This one is honestly such a good adaptation of war of the worlds
"Nvm about following the birds...the birds are crazy." 😅
A family friend got to be an extra in the ferry scene and loved doing it.
I’ve never been a big fan of sci-fi flicks but I have ALWAYS loved War of the Worlds, this movie is so good! It has more horror elements than sci-fi so thanks for sticking it out even though we aren’t in Scary Mary times 😂🙏 such a good reaction!!
If that’s what you wear to a graduation I’m going back to school and when I graduate again I’ll send you an invitation.
the latest i've seen dakota fanning was in the equalizer 3 in which she reunited with denzel washington
Love the editing
Did you notice Tim Robbins played "Merlin" in Top Gun. He sat behind Tom Cruise aka Maverick after Goose died.
I have goosebumps!😱😱
This story was written by H.G. Wells and they originally did a radio program about it as if it were actually happening in the time when there was ONLY radio and the people were really freaking out about it believing it was real. Then they did a film version in the 50's. Then they did the Tom Cruise one
"Don't ask questions you don't want to know the answer to."
Nice callback to your MIB3 reaction. 😊
25:30 true, but our spider's in the US aren't big enough to have their own mailing address lol
Every time I watch this film, I think of the first attack with the heat beams and it reminds me targets ants with Raid. You see a shit ton of ants, you follow the trail to the origin, then you spray the whole trail, AND then get to work on the origin. Idk just a thought that always pops up
I remember I watched this at the theatre like when I was at the 5th grade. I remember every girl had a crush on Robbie 😂😂
Awesome reaction Mary
This was a great movie to react to! Thanks for it, Mary. Yes, American schools learn world history. Certain districts provide better quality education than others. It comes down to funding and the local community culture.
She just did The Watchers with M Night Shamalan's daughter first directed film.
Thank you! Dakota is The Goat. This, her role in the Twilight saga she crushes and an episode on Friends where she and Joey have a hilarious round of discussions about life where she filmed this episode right after wrapping War Of The Worlds. Track down the Friends episode. She's a comedic genius
I work in a steel mill and we use a lot of overhead high capacity cranes. They use horns and sirens to communicate to people on the floor and that’s what they’re doing with the tripods and the horns. They also show Tom Cruise as a crane operator It’s the beginning of the movie.
The film is based on quite a famous book by HG Wells that was made into a movie in the 50's and there have been a least two tv shows and a concept album (By Jeff Wayne) based on the book which makes it quite surprising that you no nothing about this story.
33:01
God, it did my heart and everyone else in the theater (2005)to see the two original actors from the 1953 War of The Worlds movie.
Which is still my fav and Spielberg's as mentioned in a comment years ago. Why he spent $$ and time on this.
I love this movie. It makes me want more Spielberg disaster/apocalypse movies.
I was in this movie I was an extra. I lived on the block that Tom cruise character “lived “ so I got to have a part in the first 10 minutes 😂
You can see Dakota Fanning and react to Equalizer 3. Almost like she came full circle from Man on Fire with Denzel Washington.
Grew up on the 1953 George Pal version. While his version upset the purists over the years, it is still my favorite version of both movie and war machine. I also enjoy the musical that Jeff Wayne produced back in 1978 which actually came to the stage in a live version not that many years ago. Cheers.
That Mary outfit at the end.... 🔥
I recently rewatched "Arlington Road" from 1999, with Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins.. absolutly worth your time if you haven´t seen it ;)
The bridge at the beginning of the movie is the Pulaski Skyway in Bayonne, NJ, just across the river from Manhattan.
Dakota has not stopped acting steadily since she was a kid, she's been in a lot of movies; some good, some not so good. Some of the big ones since then are Oceans 8, The Runaways, Once upon A Time In Hollywood, Equalizer 3 and she was in a couple of the Twilight movies.
I didn't even noticed she was in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Pretty sure she was just in a movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan's daughter called The Watchers about a month or so back. It may still be in American cinemas.
Love the ending with the grandparents who were the actors in the original movie...which for me was the best version of the story.
0:31 The part where Robbie left to fight had me at my wit's end, I was like, no you can't go why he leaving he's got to stop him from leaving, afterwarsds I was like, it's steven speilberg pulling one of his tricks, I was like damn that s.o.b speilburg why did he have to put me through that, lol.....
A list of disaster movie for you: Volcano, Dante's Summit, The Core, The Day After, Armaggedon, Deep Impact!
My girlfriend at the time fell asleep in the theatre during this movie, LOL.
It was her first time watching Tom Cruise.
the aliens from independance day and these aliens look almost identical with the big heads
The ending is unique, but as a biologist, it actually is quite a reach. Viruses for example have a really hard time even jumping from species to species, let alone from terrestrial to extraterrestrial life. A virus for example wouldn't be able to even infect something that didn't use DNA and protein the way life on earth does. Bacteria that disrupt cellular functions with toxins etc, would have to be very fortuitous that they also work on however the aliens work. The only realistic situation in which something like a bacteria would be harmful to some form of extraterrestrial life would be if they somehow found a hospitable environment in the alien that killed them by just growing out of control, crowding out the host tissue, somehow disrupting its function (similar to the green eye goo from the expanse season 4). Its a unique ending, but a little bit of a reach, because that hospitable environment would likely have some sort of food for the bacteria for it to be hospitable, which likely wouldn't exist in the alien.
Hi Mary. That was once more a joy to watch your reaction.
P.S. The edits in this are wild 😎😂
Mary leaves to tend to family issues.
Good girl.
Nothing more important than family.
You gotta just respect the craft with Cruise. I personally think he's one of the best to ever do it.
Where Ray lives is in Bayonne, NJ, not New York. A lot of the scenes in the beginning were filmed there. I was born and raised in NJ and have driven through parts of that town.
19:21 The 4th of July bit... HILARIOUS! 🤣
War of the World's was originally famous novel by HG Wells and was developed into a radio play. Developed and directed by Orson Welles. It was first broadcast in 1938 and caused some people to have major panics across the USA because some they thought it was real.
It was remade in black and white and watched that version multiple times as a kid. Its kind of amusing that people come to this movie not knowing anything of it because its got a huge place in popular culture (among us old farts anyway).
In 1978 a musical album was made of this, narrated by Richard Burton (the actor and multiple times husband of Elizabeth Taylor) and that album was HUGELY popular and is an event to listen to just by itself, especially the opening lines.
Great movie and the original is great also, thanks!
Dakoya was amazing in the forgotten Spielberg television series Taken (2001)
The guy in the house was tim Robbins from Shawshank redemption
We do indeed learn about the colonization of the world by other nations in American schools. We simply skip our own or maybe say all our territories were - and still are - fully on board with the plan.
Take a look at the original movie from the 50s as well. BTW - War of the Worlds got famous after a radio broadcast in the 30s where people didn't realize they were reading from a book.
