Dockworker Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) struggles to build a positive relationship with his two children, Rachel (Dakota Fanning) and Robbie (Justin Chatwin). When his ex-wife, Mary Ann (Miranda Otto), drops them off at Ferrier's house, it seems as though it will be just another tension-filled weekend. However, when electromagnetic pulses of lightning strike the area, the strange event turns out to be the beginning of an alien invasion, and Ferrier must now protect his children as they seek refuge.

Near the end of the movie when Tom Cruise is a walking and sees his wife and her parents - the man and women parents are actually the two main stars from the original War of the Worlds from 1953. You see them for just a few seconds in this movie.

This movie was made soon after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City where people in the USA (especially in NYC) were very on edge and in a panicked state thinking we were going to be attacked again at any time. Steven Spielberg wanted to use this movie as sort of a parallel of that to show how humans would react during such a horrible time. They’d either turn on each other or band together to keep strong. So some of the imagery evokes 9/11 attack imagery like Tom Cruise’s character running down the street covered in ash from dead people and debris like the survivors of 9/11 like you’d see in pictures and documentaries about that fateful day, the clothes falling from the sky, and the son being determined to go with the military to fight like a lot of young adults signing up for the army right after 9/11.

I remember the ending not being very satisfying when I saw it in theaters, but it's probably the most realistic. With everything we were shown in the movie there was no chance at beating them. The idea of some silent killer like bacteria and viruses being what takes them out makes total sense when you think about the fact that even as technologically advanced as humans are, microbes are still killing people daily. So you can imagine what would happen if you went to another planet where you have ZERO immunity.

The book was a metaphor for European colonization. They showed up with guns and swords and just burned everything until mosquitoes infected them with malaria and the invaders died. The book turns it upside down having the British empire get invaded by overpowered martians until they died from our germs. "By the toll of a billion deaths immunity, his right to survive"

To me the ending is the best part, I love how they get you to think about how amazing our body truly is that we are able to adapt to things we don't really think about in todays world. How something to trivial to us was the doom for them, With that said tho one would think an advance alien race like they would of have scans of stuff on earth and take defenses for it. But who know's maybe where the aliens came from they did not have anything like microbes etc and they never had virus or anything like that at all on their own planet.

In the original book it suggested that the aliens wiped out their diseases so long ago that it wouldn’t be a thought in their mind. In a way it makes sense when you think about how much we humans have forgotten with how many advancements we made; like not many people nowadays are aware that the original purpose of alcohol was to make water safe to drink.

Crazy thing to notice if you read the book that even if it takes place in the late 1800's the situations with the people that happen in the book are EXTREMELY realistic and some moments even scarily reflect events that happened in 2020! Started off with people being VERY nonchalant about the martian threat until they realize they are SCREWED! (You can tell people about diseases where you have the worst way to go biologically and they wont care until it is at their doorstep) The people in the book that left en masse (well stampede but you get the idea) from london fought and killed each other over food, drink, and even train travel to get to the coast eerily reflect the people who legit fought and killed each other over food, drink, FACE MASK REGULATIONS, and even TOILET PAPER at the start of the pandemic. crazy how no matter how far along we are people have never changed when it comes to world wide devastation!

I'm a little disappointed that you are not responding to the incredible sequence starting at 11:27 to 12:00 where the camera seems to orbit the scene, zooming in to the final sequence ending at 12:00. Ask yourself, "how the hell was this made??" This is a perfect example of how Great CGI is actually Invisible CGI. This entire sequence is a master class on artificially creating an emotional impact with CGI that is pretty much seamless and doesn't take you out of the movie's narrative. Why don't you even remotely wonder about this? Today's movies routinely utilize CGI that is mostly invisible. (When it's visible - that is - obvious, it's always bad.) I'm not sure I would follow your channel if your observations of a film don't include the wonderment of the routine CGI trickery that is employed by almost every film.

Which may make for a good movie, its fun to play with the idea of a realistic scenario in which the one things aliens didn't think about was what things live on our planet that they hadn't adapted to. If aliens really ever did invade us, the viruses/organisms...etc would likley indeed mess with their bodies.
Though I will say, I'd imagine smart aliens would wear space suits or have shielding around their body for such things. Unless of course we are truly the only other planet with life and thus they haven't visited other planet to learn about such issues like viruses.

In the original 1890's book (well worth checking out, pulls no punches and somehow even grimmer) it explains that the martians / aliens had cured their diseases long, long ago on their planet and that it was largely sterile. As a result they'd long forgotten that germs are actually a thing that could hurt them.

Evidently you all never read the original BOOK, or watched the original movie from the fifty's(my dad was an extra in that). The Martians eat the humans. in this movie the Martians buried their war machines here on Earth hundreds if not thousands of years ago. That was not lightning but a teleportation beam sending the crews from orbit down to the machines. The machines were not defecating, they were purging the power systems. The plane that crashed had everyone on board vaporized. You saw the news crew scrounging food and drink from the wreckage. The Martians used an emp to knock out electronic. The van worked because the mechanic had just replaced the alternator. The burning train was actually in the original book.

Three things: one, JV, you sounded almost exactly like Arnold did when you said “the bridge is out!” Two, Jane’s “they learn the most about us up our butts” will be an instant classic. If that doesn’t go viral, nothing will. Third Tim Robbins, who played the crazy guy in the house who wouldn’t shut up, also played in another movie with Tom Cruise. I won’t spoil it, but if you know, you know. Great reaction!

I used to live a few doors down from the house where WOTW was written in Woking, UK. House is still there. Its only a small semi town house. The story was published in 1898 and was set around 1900. The Story was part alien invasion, part psycological horror. The martians (in the book they were from Mars) invaded earth because Mars was dying and their attack was a desperate act of survival. There is a lot more in the book thats ever been seen on on screen.

They take the human blood and mix it with something from their planet and then use it as fertilizer and for fuel. When for fertilizer, then they take it inside the Tripod, and when for fuel, then outside the Tripod.

I see you posted this 2 months ago, so apologies if someone already suggested these (I'm not necessarily a Tom Cruise fan but I love a lot of his films): starting with classic and non-sci-fi "Risky Business"; one of my top ten films ever "Minority Report", "Vanilla Sky" though I always also suggest the original Spanish (as in from Spain) version "Abre Los Ojos."

Tom Cruise is a phenomenal actor! If you're looking for recommendations, here's a start:
    Magnolia
    Rainman
Born on the 4th of July
    Vanilla Sky
    A Few Good Men
All of the Mission Impossible films

Fyi, people en mass did NOT think war of worlds broadcast was real. Only a handful of people were concerned for a short period of time. There were many mentions in the broadcast that it was an entertainment programme.
I cant get through this movie. Not sure why steven told Dakota to impersonate the most irritating banshee in the universe, but he did.
If she were my daughter, id let the aliens take her. Then try and hide beforr they return such a bad product.

Remember seeing this at the cinema, two thirds a great movie, it's just a shame that the script was undercooked and the Robbie based characterisation was pretty weak. (Robbie, a dog riding a bike is something that one needs to see. A desperate fight against Giant-Murder-Aliens isn't something you 'need to see'.)
Anyway, shout out to the still unnerving and way-way-way-way-way ahead of it's time 1890s book. In the great original alien invasion novel H. G. Wells imagines: Nerve gas. Lasers. What are essentially portable nuclear reactors. Exo-skeletons. Programable drone robots. Cloning. 3-D printing machines and terraforming. And all that while the rest of the world is still trying to figure out the new invention of the bicycle. Dude was a bit imaginative.

This particular movie has big PTSD for me lol As a very young kid _6 or 7...my family bought this movie thinking it was an alien invasion 'action thriller' with Tom Cruise fighting Aliens....I sat and watched this movie and was absolutely scarred...On the one hand it was the first scary thing i had watched so I was morbidly curious and kept watching but then was freaked out forever lol Something about the very somber notes of despair and the human on human violence and stress really did a number on me not to mention Aliens in the basement and the sucking people through tubes like this really really impacted me haha
