This was required watching when i showed up to my 5th AMDS Bioenvironmental Engineering flight at Minot AFB in December 1997. Spent 11 years in ND. I don't miss it.

I just spent five days of my two week vacation traveling in Western North Dakota. One of the most astoundingly beautiful places I've ever been! The oil is quickly killing that though :(

+flamingphil123 Thankfully the oil stuff is mostly done. Its getting nice and quiet again!

The people that settled in ND were mostly European descendants, Many farmers are Germans from Russia ( Ukrainian now) . When the oil boom and hurricane Katrina happened, the state changed. Now people lock their doors and don’t stop to help if you have a flat tire. ND has groups / clicks, some are hate groups(KKK).
Many women hunt and fish, but are careful with being caught alone with males ( sexual assault) If you use government assistance, divorced, more than one partner, your family is not looked upon well in the community.I think this came from the German perspective- everyone should work hard to provide for themselves and keep home and family clean.
ND does have a horribly bad history that they don’t like to discuss. Treatment of the Native Americans ( children taken away to Catholic boarding schools - had drug experiments done on them, sexual and mental abuse to be assimilated to how we live now. The Asian Americans from everywhere in the USA -sent to holding camps during the war in Bismarck, ND. Lots of racism , it’s easy to get caught alone in Montana and the Dakotas. So if you are not white be careful and plan accordingly. Also plan for the weather, wind burn, sun burn and if cold you can get frostbite or hypothermia quickly so if caught on the hyway without emergency supplies is dangerous. Phone reception is not good, plus in some areas takes up to a week for a police officer/sheriff to come by.

North Dakota is a beautiful state, populated by beautiful, tough as nails, salt of the earth folk. Food wise, it is a culinary wasteland, other than that it's a rough & tough paradise and I love it here.

Come on, tongue-in-cheek aside, I grew up in North Dakota and have many happy memories of that time. You should go when the weather is better. Not all North Dakotans are dumb as you seem to imply by the people interviewed. Great historical sites, Lewis and Clark travels, The Bad Lands, Abraham Lincoln State Park. You can learn a lot of US history there. And have clear skies and clean air. It has the lowest crime rate, and the schools are good. People are there because they want to be there!
