This is something that is making me suffer a lot. My earthly mother died recently, on the feast of St. John the Baptist. She made me buy her a scapular and asked me to have it blessed by a priest. As I brought her to England 8 years ago, she did not know the language and could not ask for it herself. Unfortunately I kept putting it off, even though we went to Mass every Sunday and I could have asked for it. Two months ago she was bedridden. I called a priest to give her the last rites and asked him, with great concern, to perform the rite of the Holy Scapular. But he only wanted to do a normal blessing (not the specific Scapular blessing) and then I held the Scapular around my mother's neck for him to say the imposition formula, but he didn't want to and said that it was already imposed. I heard in a video that in case of danger of death a lay person could do the imposition by reading the formula, so in the hospital, greatly concerned for my mother (who could no longer speak, pray or move) I did the imposition. I prayed a lot to Our Heavenly Mother to accept my poor mother's Scapular as valid. It was not her fault that the ritual was not done properly. Do you believe that the Blessed Virgin would have accepted the Scapular and her promises in this way? God bless you
Thank you for your moving comment. We would point out that there are two distinct Scapular promises -- that of being saved from damnation, and that of being delivered from Purgatory on the first Saturday after one's death. It sounds as though your mother had a holy death, leaving this world with the aid of the Sacraments. In effect, then, you have every reason to hope and believe that she was saved -- which is the Scapular promise associated with being invested in the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular. Whether or not the imposition and investiture you performed was valid, the grace which you sought in that act seems to have been granted.
The second promise, called the Sabbatine Privilege, involves more than the mere investiture -- particularly, a daily prescribed work of piety, by default the daily recitation of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or with a priest's permission, the daily recitation of a five-decade Rosary. It seems clear that there is little ground for supposing that your mother would be accorded this more involved aspect of the Brown Scapular's advantages. Therefore, while you naturally hope that she is quickly brought into Heaven, you will do well to assume for her sake, for the rest of your life, that your mother is in Purgatory. Your prayers, penances, and alms offered on her behalf will go to great use, if not for your own mother, then for another needy soul. God bless you.
What is the prayer that the priest should use to invest the scapular? I have talked to two priests and one didn't know and didn't think he should be the one to do it, and the other said I could just put it on.

Thank you for this important question. The scapular promises apply only to those who, as Our Lady said, are "clothed" in this part of the religious habit -- that is, formally invested, as the religious are when they receive their habit. It is necessary to be thus invested through the enrollment ceremony of the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular.
For anyone who doesn't know if he or she was enrolled as a child (typically at the time of one's First Holy Communion), it would be a very simple matter to ask a priest to perform this enrollment. There is also no harm whatsoever in being enrolled more than once, so if there is any doubt, it is highly advisable to be enrolled as an adult.
Also very important is to be sure that you will be able to receive the Sabbatine Privilege promised by Our Lady (that is, of being delivered from Purgatory on the first Saturday after one's death). One of the conditions of this is the daily performance of a pious work - by default, the recitation of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. But any priest is authorized to allow you to substitute a daily five-decade Rosary in place of reciting the office. Again, taking the simple step is necessary. One must have a priest's explicit permission to make this substitution.

@@TheFatimaCenter my situation is peculiar, to say the least. I was Consecrated on July 16, 2021. As did my 2 children. Our names remained overnight at St. Elías' cave. We were given a blessing by them. The ceremony and Mass was at Our Lady of Guadalupe Santuary of the Fifth Apparition to St Juan Diego.
The situation is, that due to the pandemic it was not possible to get a priest to invest us the Scapular.
On 2022 I approached a priest for confession and I suppose he didn't believe I am Catholic, because he refused. I was stranded at my son's apartment in Miami, having flown from Nicaragua once my kids knew about the virus. The second priest I didn't bother to ask because after Mass I asked him to bless a few Catholic items, including St Benedict of Nursia. He asked who was he, my mind went blank for a minute, and I answered his feast is the same day of my birthday, and he initially lived as a hermit I looked at him puzzled and I asked "you really don't know him? He said yes, and bless it. I really didn't feel like asking him to invest me with the Scapular, because if he didn't believe I was Catholic at first, how was I to get him to believe I had been Consecrated?
This year, I decided to ask my priest, but he claims he doesn't know how and he doesn't think he should do it, but a Carmelita. I went to another Church and asked the same thing. He said just to put it on.
I have problems with this since we were told to get a priest to invest it on us. To be honest, one or two of the priest involved in our Consecration told us that with the blessing of the Carmelite and the Consecration Ceremony at the Santuary, we could just put it on ourselves.
I truly wish priest followed one way of doing things. I am just about ready to quit this, except I just can't. I always wore an Scapular since childhood, but I don't recall any Consecration. I don't have that Scapular anymore, so I decided to start from zero and get Consecrated.
I will buy the little book you sell because I would like to have it and read it. I have bought the ones you sell about Our Lady of Fatima. I don't think I will find an answer for me in the book you have. Please give me an answer. I will follow what you say and hopefully this will have a happy ending, and a new beginning with Our Lady of Mount Carmel at our sides.

In Her final apparition at Fatima, Our Lady held a Brown Scapular in Her hand. She wants us to practice this devotion, which begins with the ceremony of investiture. We urge you to try again to find a priest who will perform this simple ceremony for you. God bless you.
