How to Hunt and Attract Feral Pigeons

  • They say "you are what you eat". Well, the same applies to these birds. A lot of my city friends would wrinkle their noses when I mentioned that I sometimes eat feral pigeons. But, that is because they only have the image of their city pigeons, rooting around at the base of dumpsters and garbage cans. These country pigeons grew up eating corn and grain. So, they actually taste pretty good. And if you are lucky enough to get your hands on few young ones, they are downright delicious.
I shoot these birds regularly. In part to keep their numbers from swelling out of control, and also to feed my pets and (on occasion) myself. If you bag 10-12 of them, they make for a nice pie.
One last point of interest: The feral pigeons from the "old world" (that is you Europe and Asia) are genetically different from the feral pigeons in the "new world" (N and S America). This is because the old-world ferals got loose from their captors 1000's of years ago. The feral in the Americas are recent escapees. Their lineage is less than a couple hundred years old because the ferals here (in the U.S.) are not descendants of old world ferals. They are descendants of old world domestic pigeons brought over here on ships.
Hence, "our" feral pigeons are more genetically similar to "your" domestic pigeons than your ferals. Kind of cool, eh? That also might play a part in their flavor - just a thought...
ANSWER TO WHAT WAS WRONG AT THE TOP OF THE GRAINBIN:
The corn is MUCH taller!!! The footage from atop the grainbin was filmed 3 months after the rest of the footage. On my original trip, I had forgotten to record the scene. So, I returned later, but by then....much had changed with the corn. :)
    Equipment list:
    Edgun Matador PCP Air Rifle
    Equipment Details:
The Camera Mount I used to record through the scope can be found here:
    www.amazon.com...
The slow-motion camera I use to film the shots through the scope is the Casio EX-FC150. That camera is no longer made, but you can buy its successor (which is actually a better camera than the one I use) here:
    www.amazon.com...
The Exact same Hawke Scope that I use in this video (Sidewinder TAC 30 6.5-20x) can be found here:

Absolutely love your videos. I grew up on a farm as well. Some of the readers don't realise that you care very much for all of the animals and do not shoot indiscriminately. That is what farmers, gardeners, naturalists, and game managers do. I also have been fortunate to get a good job, but it is a city so I very much enjoy your combination of geekiness and nature study. Thank you for these.

You mentioned that pigeons fly around 50 miles an hour.Rightly said. Plus, they are very adept at dodging an diving while in flight.I've been a falconer since I was 14 and am now 65. I've flown many hawks and falcons at pigeons. It takes a good falcon to tag a pigeon in flight.Especially if its a racer. These birds are fully conditioned and can really turn on the juice when needed.Of course, when a Prairie falcon or Peregrine hits one at 180 mph or so, kinda equals everything up.But so do pellets

Ok for all those flying Rat lovers. He lives on a farm and Pigeons are a nuisance for farming. They poop on everything and eat anything left out. So hunting them isn't really a bad thing. He's just looking after his lively hood. He uses regular ammunition to provide a quick, clean and painless death. You don't see him clipping their wings and kicking them. He then uses them for food. So their not just killed for sport.

Enjoying all your videos about air rifles. I want my weans to enjoy shooting as I did as a lad, but we're in Kalifornia and live within city limits. I canny see the outlay for a .22LR they may be only able tae use it once a month at a range. A good air rig for back garden plinking makes more sense from cost perspective and practice. Thank you again! (I have a mate from Milwaukee who has a very similar American accent!)

this was so useful especially the part that if you shot them and the take off to follow them

After seeing the distance and height of the grain bin, I still can't believe an air rifle can shoot that far that accurately.

"Pigeons are a plump little bird in the pigeon family..."
That's enough right there to convince me to watch this whole video!

I read about squab being very popular about 140 years ago. As long as its eating good food id say it has a chance at being tasty. Nice video.

we've lost most feral pidgeons in my area, the ones we have the most of look more like doves or other style birds. A lot nicer then the hundreds of feral looking ones we used to have.

    Hey man, just curious.
Do you even eat chicken or beef? Or do you just cook up whatever you hunt?

I used to shoot pigeons in the rafters of my home in Mexico. My Crosman 1377 would put a pellet right through their heads and my neighbors would beg me to let them know each time I was about to shoot some so thety could pick them up and cook them. They made the same requests for the rattle snakes I killed with it too.
