I watched this thinking maybe I'd start resoling my own climbing shoes. I'm now happy to pay someone else $40 to do it for me. I have a new appreciation for the skill (and equipment) a proper resole takes!
+Kaleem Zia Khwaja Thanks Kaleem! Its definitely a specialized process to get a good resole. it takes 2 days for each pair to go through the step by step process from worn out shoe to a repaired on.
Hey man! Thank you for the video. Love your workspace, so cool. Could I ask what the presses are which you're using to cure the shoe for 24 hours? Thank you.
hello The Gear Fix I'm from Brazil and I'm having trouble buying the sole. Where do you buy? Direct with the vibram or with the c4? need to import this material to Brazil. if you can help me :)
In today age of the disposable mentality/life, really good to see that there are ppl around that still repair and give new life to shoes. 1 less pair in the land fill and renewed life on the rocks.
I like your job looks incredible. I want to start to resole climbing shoes i have a few successful experience but this work need many experience for results like yours. Can you tell me where i can buy rubber sheets?
What kind of foam did you put under those shoe presses? Looking to buy a press like that , but most of the foam is gone. Not sure what to use as a replacement.
Greg Oppman We source rubber from a variety of distributors depending on the type and supply, when possible directly from the manufacturer or from shoe maker.
You guys do excellent work! Also nice shop... In regards of the video, on the manual press are those just Eva foam layers stacked together or is it some special kind of foam/rubber? Thanks for the help
Very nice job, i'm in the shoe industry and we use barge all purpose cement when gluing shoes, however, barge doesn't seem to hold up on the climbing shoes. what kind of glue are you using? thanks!
Hey Mark, the sander is specific to shoe cobbling. We also work on hiking boots, mountaineering boots, chacos, pretty much anything you might wear during some adventure outside. Specifically it is made by Sutton Shoe Machinery. They is a relatively small one in comparison to others that are out there. We got our ours used.
Hey, I'm interested in finding out more about the equipment needed, along with some courses that I could even take to begin a quest down the windy road of shoe resoling. If you happen to have some suggestions, any information is appreciated. Thanks! Joey
Can this be done with regular sneakers for a fee? I have a pair that really happen to fit me very well, even though they were very inexpensive, but because they fit me so well and the soles have a few holes, I really do not want to throw them out and would be willing to pay for a new sole on them. Let me know, thanks!
traderjoes Sorry for the delayed response. We're not so good at remembering we've got a youtube account:) E-mail us at Info@TheGearFix.com with pictures of your shoes and we'll see what we can do. Thanks for reaching out!
Jason Lee We've resoled "regular sneakers" as traderjoes was talking about, but I'm unsure if we ever ended up repairing his. It's possible to resole some sneakers but not all of them.
Hello, I was wondering if you could give me a few hits about how to start practicing climbing shoe resoling. Have you ever heard of someone doing it at home? can i substitute this big heavy machinery with something? In my country it is a huge problem to find someone who does this kind of craft (or even impossible). I really want to learn it :) thanks! Great video!
it is easier and properly done once you have press and shoe masts. In this video the shoe repaired is not that badly worn, most people wear them off until a hole appears, a lot more work than.
Nice video. I noticed the Jimi Hendrix and Beatles posters. The Hendrix poster means that this guy smokes reefer! [I won't tell] Does the rubber come in different ratios of butadiene and styrene? or do you use just one type?
+rocky armstrong so a composite is basically a layered material to get the benefits of multiple materials. I was thinking like layers or tough rubber with ductile rubber in between. The ductile rubber for friction and the tough rubber for things like edging
+Leon Hasic gotcha, I understand what you thinking and why... I think, ... but as the rubber is worn it doesn't keep the same texture beneath the surface.
THANKS! It takes about 2 days for the shoe to go through the whole process. We do them 10 pairs at a time and all told it takes about an hour or so total work on each pair. We do 20 to 30 pairs a week!
Kevin, You can really spend as much or as little as you like to some extent. At the most basic level, you need a grinder, a hammer, something to hammer shoes on, a lot of rubber, and a lot of glue. The machines we currently we have in our shop (grinders specific to cobbling, shoe presses, industrial sewing machines, etc.) range in price from $2000 - $6000 used. A lot of our equipment is home made as well. There are plenty of shoe shops out there for sell or who are selling their equipment so you should be able to look things up pretty easily online. More than a financial investment though, it's a time investment, it takes a long time to get good at this so be ready for that. Shoot us an email if you've got any other questions. Info@theGearFix.com and good luck!
If you resole a shoe with a last that doesn’t fit close to perfect will it cause any permanent deformation? Wonderful job on this video. Very educational!
Great video! On the use of both hydraulic sole press & a hand-cranked one - do you use the hydraulic press to ensure a good initial cement bond, and the cranked press to hold it in place whilst the cement sets?
Yep. Hydraulic to ensure an initial good contact. Re-enforce that with some good ol' fashion hammering, to make sure all the edges get a good contact, then into the presses overnight to hold everything in place while it bonds.
Hey Drew, I have no idea! I'll get a hold of Nick and ask. He is no longer with us as he is focusing on his business, linecamsystems.com/. Check it out, he's doing some really cool things & I'll figure what song that is.
Of course. We're running a couple of weeks on turnaround right now. Our shipping address is 345 SW Century Dr. Suite 100 Bend, OR 97702. We don''t have a website set up yet, but you can check out our facebook page for more info at www.TheGearFix.com or give us a call:) Thanks for checking us out!
Yeah, it ain't cheap. But we do our best to get the most out of it. At this point, this video is well over a year old and we've become much more efficient in our use of the rubber. Thanks for the feedback Kimball.
Stephen Screaton Not True Stephen! A pair of Muira's for instance is $170. Even a low end climbing shoe is still running $100. A pair of half soles cost $35 for the pair and we, and most other quality resolers, guarantee our work and the fit. THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK!

If you could capitalize on speeding up the turn around times, I’d pay you.
OMG RIGHT!!!
ironically , it actually makes me want to learn the process and open a cobbler shop! how can I apprentice???
As someone trying to learn atm, its not easy or cheap. Basic tools and materials will run you about $1000 and DIY isnt easy.
Nice work and nice clean shop. Thx for sharing
So much gear involved. I had no idea it was such an in depth process. Thanks for sharing. PS looks like an awesome space to do your art!
Very educational, thanks for posting!
Very well done process video. This is exactly what I was looking for. You rock. I'd love to try this...

That guy is practicing?!? He looks like a pro!
Amazing Work! Nice to see a pro working :)
Nice video, dude!
Can you share with us what kind of glue you used for this job?
Thx
Agreed I would like to know as well!
Nice vídeo. Thank you very much.
Does each shoe have a specific form to its shape? Or the plastic forms are kind of generic?
What kind of foam did you put under those shoe presses? Looking to buy a press like that , but most of the foam is gone. Not sure what to use as a replacement.
where did you buy the sheets of rubber? I just saw resole kits available via five tens website.
Greg Oppman We source rubber from a variety of distributors depending on the type and supply, when possible directly from the manufacturer or from shoe maker.
Hey, on my shoes the rubber on the tip of the shoe is soo worn down that the leather underneath shows. Is that fixable?
can u tell me where i can buy resole sheet sole climing shoes. tq

Very nice job, i'm in the shoe industry and we use barge all purpose cement when gluing shoes, however, barge doesn't seem to hold up on the climbing shoes. what kind of glue are you using? thanks!
use ethyl acetate as primer. Or toluene. sponge on let dry 10-15 min. Apply cement. Press as usual
What's the machine called that he uses to sand down the existing rubber?
Could you please let me know the brand of your manual presses?
Hey nick that is a great video! Just wondering what kind of sander is that in the vid?
Hey Mark, the sander is specific to shoe cobbling. We also work on hiking boots, mountaineering boots, chacos, pretty much anything you might wear during some adventure outside. Thanks for your response nick, your info has been helpful hope I can find a used one!
wich glue you use?

Joey
on my 4th resole now, im using far less tools. if you have basic wood working tools it can be done o and contact cement is the glue
Would you be willing to get in touch? Still interested!
@@Unbalanced72 any contact cement specifically?
Hey guys, I was curious what you use for your shoe press over night. La-Macker? I've had a hard time finding those?!? Any help appreciated, Thanks!
Well, if i would have that much cutting waste, my boss would propably kill me.
Nice video.
Great great, i will credit this video while sharing this. Well im from Penang Climber page. :)

can you fix the part of the shoe were the toes are? the rupper got off there quickly and it is not only the sole
it is easier and properly done once you have press and shoe masts. In this video the shoe repaired is not that badly worn, most people wear them off until a hole appears, a lot more work than.
How often can a shoe be resoled?
what type of glue are you using?
This is so cool
***** Thanks. Appreciate the support!
I own a pair of the Evolv Shamans. Do you recreate the features on the bottom of its sole?
Baron Yamamoto yep
Thanks The Gear Fix, LLC!!!

Does the rubber come in different ratios of butadiene and styrene? or do you use just one type?
Whats stuff do I need to start doing this at home
Rubber, glue, grinder:)
Hey i was wondering what you call such a grinder?
The sander?
I liked the video in general, but that leather apron is wickeeeed!!
Wow! Mad respkt
Where is this? Interesting, what shop is this i mean. haha!
As an experienced rubber worker, do you know if the tiny tread marks on climbing rubber are a result of surface brushing or a composite rubber matrix
i am by no means an expert on the matter, but i would be willing to bet it is the former. i can't see rubber forming a "matrix" of that design
+rocky armstrong so a composite is basically a layered material to get the benefits of multiple materials. I was thinking like layers or tough rubber with ductile rubber in between. The ductile rubber for friction and the tough rubber for things like edging

I believe the sheet is vulcanized parallel to the forward walking direction

Amazing!!
This is a really art! I'm impressed. How long does it take to resole a pair of shoe?
THANKS! It takes about 2 days for the shoe to go through the whole process. We do them 10 pairs at a time and all told it takes about an hour or so total work on each pair. We do 20 to 30 pairs a week!
I like good craftsmanship.:)
how much money in equipment would it roughly cost to get into resoling?

A true artist at work! However now a days surely would be better and maybe cheaper to just go out and buy a new pair?

I climb 8a boulders with a 50eur climbing shoes. You don't need to buy an expensive pair. You can climb barefoot too ;)

Shouldn't you be wearing a mask? Nice video though, thanks!
+imvarda Yes, we should probably should be wearing a mask and glasses at all times while we are working.
