Dad had as all excavating business growing up, he had a JD 350 with a loader and it was the handiest little pieces he owned. Just a great little machine. You really lucked out finding that one and I know your going to love it.
I almost cried watching this. Why? My dad earned his living with a 1968 JD 450 with backhoe and it looks almost exactly the same as yours. Dad passed away a few years ago. He sold the 450 several years before that in Pennsylvania. Someday I want to track it down and buy it, if possible to have it back in the family again. The thing was amazing. Listening to yours run brought a flood of memories.

FYI, the machine is from the late 60's... that would make it over 50yrs old (not 30-35yrs old like you think) but I'm sure you know that by now. They are great machines, I own a straight 450 crawler loader like that (with a log winch and arch) but will be selling it soon to finish funding my current project which happens to be a 450B crawler loader with backhoe like yours. They can definitely have their quirks but now that I've pretty much disassembled the entire 450B and know it inside and out, it wouldn't make much sense to buy anything else. The two biggest cons of the machine for me are that 1. they can seriously tear up a piece of ground, even if you are just going straight and 2. it's depends on what shaft you have coming out the rear that determines what attachment(s) you can run. I wish it was easier to unhook the backhoe and throw on a winch but that would require you to have a winch-drive shaft coming out the back. They are also prone to steering issues because the clutches are "dry clutches" until you get up into the 450C model... I simply bungie cord my sticks to the rear when I park mine, to keep the clutch packs from corroding together (or swelling up and seizing to each other if fibrous clutches are used). It'll be interesting to get the project finished and run the backhoe attachment as I don't have one on my current machine. Good luck with that sucker, she looks like she was loved by an old-timer
This is the machine I cut my teeth on as an operator at the young age of 13. Dug and installed miles and miles of water lines, sewer lines, for private and municipal contracts with the backhoe attachment. Without the backhoe attachment I loaded a thousand or so trucks with various materials, and graded hundreds of building lots. I got to where I could de-couple and re-couple that backhoe attachment in about five to ten minutes. All that was done in about 6 years. I graduated to larger and more sophisticated equipment over the years, huge excavators, articulating loaders, graders, D 10 dozers and such. I worked for the same man for over 30 years until he retired. God rest your soul DAD. I'm 70 years old now and I think I miss that old JD crawler loader/backhoe the most. The first time I got on it, it only had 12 hours on the Hr. meter. Seeing this video brought back many fond memories.
My father was a building contractor in Connecticut. He had that same machine. He had me driving it at the age of 13. He had me operating it at the age of 14. He would have me dig out a cellar with that machine. First the foundation with the hoe then you just keep digging with the loader square it off with the hoe until it's done. For it's time that was probably the best investment he ever made. That machine was always at work. First with the test holes, lot clearing all the way to the lawn installations. Definitely a good buy. The faster your hands can move with the two sticks and the loader control the faster you can get the job done. But it looks like you don't have any deadlines so just take it easy. Thanks for the memories.
I grew up in GA and in the early 80s when I was a kid these were on every construction site around. I saw less and less track loaders at all till now seeing one is a rarity , and a 450 like this would be a really rare site.
I have one just like this (late 60's) without the backhoe and one a little newer (1973) with a backhoe that I'm restoring (1/2 way done). Looking at all the controls in the driver seat, I can tell you with 99% certainty that this is machine is a 450 straight (1965-1970), not a 1980's 450C. I was told my 450 straight was a 450B when I bought it, to find out later that it was not (bummer). I've learned a TON about these machines over the years and can say my 1973 450B operator controls are a lot different but the controls on the machine in this video are that of my 450 straight. Thanks for the tips Harley. I have a 46000lb excavator which im using for most of the clearing and shaping but the 450 has been amazing for moving large piles of ANYTHING. Ill take ypur advice and keep it out of the muck!!!
Nice looking machine. I have a similar tractor but mine is a dozer with a 9' blade and outboard pusher arms. Old iron is easy to fall in love with. One thing: That is a H-L-R transmission which is nice except there was a SAFETY RECALL on them. When you put the machine in neutral sometimes it will shift into reverse after a few seconds. Yours may have been fixed but if not JD will fix it for free. Take your machine serial number to JD and they will check to see if the shifting spool has been upgraded. Imagine dismounting and while you are on the track it starts moving or you are on the backhoe and it starts backing up into your ditch.
This is a great machine. I ran this model (an early 80's one) without the backhoe. It was a great machine, powerful, well balanced, dependable. I loved it. I don't understand the slow comment; it's a dozer - you're not going to win a NASCAR race. You are absolutely right on about the terrain you are working. I operated rubber tire back hoes too and the track machine is much much better for where you are. And it's a John Deere; you keep it going strong forever. You made a great choice! Good luck with it
That's a great machine you've got there. It will do a lot of work. I think it's far more useful than a dozer even without the backhoe. I have a 450C loader and I love it, I wish I had a backhoe for it. FWIW your machine is not a 450C, pretty sure it's a 450B making it an early 70's I believe.
I had an early 70's 450 without the backhoe attachment. What a powerhouse! However, if you think getting a 15000 lb machine unstuck is going to be easy, you'll have a rude awakening. I got bogged down in mud once and threw a track. A CAT 977 (47000 lbs) could barely pull me out. I'm just lucky it was on site. You'll have fun knocking down some trees with that machine.
These machines are excellent units. They are simple to work on and will start in any weather. I ran one very similar to this. I'm hoping to purchase the unit now. These units were made to run forever. Machines today not so much.
Air speed excellent machine would suggest put teeth on your loader bucket you won't regret it. I ran the 450 doser for many years, they worked fantastic. If you can find one grab it. You won't regret it.

My neighbour farm had a John Deere crawler loader with backhoe, exactly like yours during the eighties and until 1996 when they sold it. But it had a cab and was older and was a bit rusty, it was manufactured during the sixties or early seventies I guess. I live in south Sweden in Europe. These machines are very rare in Sweden, that one is the only one I ever have seen in reality. I thought it was really cool. My father did borrow it a couple of times. I remember he was not very impressed since he was used to Caterpillar 225. The backhoe arrangement had significant backlash, the machine was slow and had low capacity.
Forgot to mention, get some ripper teeth for your bucket if you're planning to clear land. It really makes a difference in digging hard soil and you can scarify by back dragging. Will also help dig into slag piles if you're planning to build roads or a driveway.
You've got yourself a really nice machine Sir. With the age of it, its going to have a few creaks, rattles and unwanted movement. Your idea with the chain and binder will probably work. My only suggestion is not to bind it to tight. But then again you know that. Other than spraying it off every once in awhile, keeping it greased and doing the required maintenance, I'd say you have a very nice machine.
Hey there, I am in the middle of purchasing my second 450, this time a 450B but this one has a backhoe, like yours... Do you know the weight of this configuration? Trying to buy a trailer to haul from site to site and need to make sure I'm buying enough trailer to be legal and not overloaded. Thanks! enjoying your channel.
When it's time to build up the tracks. That's pretty easy if u can weld. Watch that front spinnel. It's smash that finger. Keep it greased, always check the under carriage. Change fluids regularly. I see you didn't have a cut off switch. I'd put one on. That saves them high dollar batteries.
i'm not a trained equipment operator, however, i've had an old cat D4 tracked loader on my 142 acre farm in w.va. for a number of years. here's my thoughts. 1. i know you were doing a video but you should NEVER leave the maching with the loader up in the air like you did unless you engage the loader "safety" mechnism which is either a pin through the loader arms or some kind of support arm. if you lose a hydralic hose, this loader will com crashing to the ground quickly. i ALWAYS put my loader on the ground before exiting the maching. 2. your machine may not "see-saw" like most loaders do under a full bucket load because of the backhoe. however, that is a characteristic you should be aware of if you ever operate this machine without the backhoe. 3. always keep a full bucket as close to the ground as possible when moving the machine and only raise it to empty the bucket when the machine is stopped. remember, dirt/rock weigh MUCH more than you might think and you are dealing with basic physics with heavy machinery. the higher a full bucket is the higher the center of gravity is - any loader will roll over backwards if you have the bucket high up in the air, are moving backwards and try a sudden stop. 4. as to your backhoe, i'm sure you've learned that backhoes take a LONG time and lots of practice to operated safely and efficiently. they are a little like flying a helicopter and i have found that it is best to do very small hand movements and to CONCENTRATE! - don't have distractions when running a backhoe! also, i've found that it's good not to try and "overstress" a backhoe pull like you might when running the loader. when a backhoe arm is under extreme stress and it suddenly "breaks lose", the extreme vibration tranmitted through the machine is very hurtful to one's back - at least it hurt my back the few times i made this mistake. i'm going to up-grade from my old Cat D4 to a newer Cat or a newer JD-450. i'm in the camp of believers that you can do almost as much with a loader as you can with a dozier and there are things you can ONLY do with a loader. and teeth on the bucket do make a big difference. good luck, and rember SAFETY ALWAYS!!! most guys with decent intelligence and coordination can run heavy machinery but don't take chances and ALWAYS watch for people around and for where the machine is in reference to ground dangers. one last thing ... i always run my Cat at the lowest RPM required and never try to "work fast." if you are not charging/being paid for your time, there is no reason to "hurry-up" with machinery. that's when mistakes and/or accidents or death occur.
+jimharvard I'll take a good loader any day over a dozer the same size. I can put the material where I want it instead of having to run it down every time. You put down the good stuff. I don't even think about is as I have been doing it so long but it's good to read it again. Thanks!
jimharvard my thoughts exactly safety is paramount and never just take for granted that that machine cannot jump into gear with the bucket up I wouldn't get in front of it
You got a great machine , the gauge's are faded from being out in the sun , the left areas which are pink now would have been deep red originally, and the other marking which are gray would have been deep black. If you get the serial number and check online or with a John Deere dealer you can figure out the year it was built .
If u didn't know it. That loader has a guide on the right side .it's your leveler. For the bucket to show u that the bucket is level as u dig across the field.
Videoclipits, thanks for the encouragement. I will make a vid of it at work. Since this video, I have used it to move enormous rootpiles and rockpiles and graded the 1acre building site. The one thing that is a bit annoying is the backhoe tends to flop around and requires frequent adjustment. On one hand I want to remove it when using it for dozing and loading but on the other hand it provides great counterbalance. I think ill run a chain and binder across to keep it up and centered when in use. Ill report back once ive done that and played with it a bit!
koviack A quick connect hoe mount just bolts to the back of the loader frame and the hydraulic hoses run off the main system. Check the back housing for bolt holes and if it has them you can add the hoe hookup later. You can get them for 350's and 450's and most likely 550's or 555's too. Sweet machines and the quick connest is a real prize.
I'm looking for a machine like that. was thinking the straight dozer but the loader backhoe would be a great combination. May not be a good machine for highball'in commercial use but, yes great for a private land owner. Great video, very informative. like to see some video of it at work. Thanks.
I did a lot of commercial work with this exact machine (minus the back hoe) - and we did typical dozer work with the loader bucket. It was really flexible, in that respect which was important because we did many different kinds of jobs; road work, cellar holes, land clearance, etc - for mid sized and large commercial sites and for small private home properties in suburban neighborhoods. It's strength was its versatility.
Myself I owned a John Deere 450 Trackloader, awesome machine, plus I owned John Deere 310A Backhoe with digmoore extension, put 10,00 hour never changed fuel pump, it poured like kitten.
Make sure the gages stay true. Check that glass globe on the side. That you're window for your hydraulic fluid. Never let it run out of fuel. It's a pain to bleed. Or prime. As they say
I just bought a original 1959 International T340 Drott, 4 in 1 bucket. With 873 hours on it. It has more mechanical problems than yours for sure. But i Love the Deer you just bought wow so cool.
I had the 350c with a hoe attached. They are clunky and slow. But very versitile at the same time. Better in soft groud than a rubber tired strong and stable for hoe use
They are a very good machine and will do the work within it's limits. However, the steering brakes are a nightmare to replace the entire cockpit has to be removed along w/ all linkages and track split, sprockets off, along with the final drive. This is needed just to get to the steering brake. One big plus with the C model is it has wet steering brakes which last longer compared to the earlier B model which has dry steering brakes. I have had both the 350 B and the 450 B the 450 will hold up much better than the 350 . Good luck with your new /old machine/

I really like it and it has really gotten me out of a jam a few times (see my "stuck in the mud" vids). I am VERY tender with it and do not beat on it at all...i want to minimize maintenance as best I can!!!!
We had same crawler with counder weights. On rear the under carage pooped the bed thease were good enough where guys are puting new under carages on them of corse the. Price of new dozzer is nuts but yep those dosers. Are great if you dont have ton of rocks great for what you need
As a cat man, i must ask why does john deer put a back hoe on everthing? And if you have used a track loader without a back hoe on it. Do you feel the weight on the back, and what cost/toll does the added weight take on the running gear?
I bought one 450c about 5 years age to work 25 acres in Blue Ridge Mountains. It is a 1976 model year. The only difference I see, is my gear changer is up beside the seat on the left side. It also has 4 forward and 4 reverses speeds in high or low range. I also has the two gear levers side by side with the safety trap door. I have no back hoe however there is a hydraulic levers for one and power takeoff in the rear with a cover on it. Mine has a large roll cage with lights front and rear. I would love to find a back hoe for it. The ones have seen cost more then I gave for the machine. ($4500) In pretty good shape. Watch your take ups on you tracks. If they get to loose you can roll the track off in a tight working turn. Once the track comes off, your in for a hard days work. Some people however know how to re-track it with a certain maneuver. I was not one of those people. I had to do it the hard way. It is a great machine for what you are asking of it. Just keep it greased. I found a couple of manuals off e-bay which explained everything from maintains to operation. Good Crawling to you Jerry
Thanks for the tip jerry! That machine has bailed me out so many times. Wasn't able to get the road completely finished before winter, so I have gotten stuck in the mud & in the snow more than once. And that was with very aggressive chains on my truck. The dozer hauled it out with no effort at all. I really need to get more acquainted with the machine. I have some hydraulic hoses that need to be replaced, but aside from that it really is in excellent shape. Any further tips you have, I would be very much appreciative of them!
I blew the main hydraulic hose when a limb got up in the under carriage. J D wanted $400 for the replacement. I went to a shop that carried a similar hose. It cost about $80. At that time I realized someone had bypassed the transmission Also try to find a J D owners manual. Several of the J D models are basically the same It really helped me. Jerry

Change all the fluids , like the other comments , good for your location , used to be very common machines , before case had frt, whl assist, they practically float ,very little ground pressure.
Take care of that machine and it'll be the ONLY one you'll ever need. I've operated one just like that a lot and they're very versatile. The hoe is detachable so if you need to just push you're not weighted down. Also the hoe digging is a lot easier that undercarriage wear. I always tried to do as much as I could with the hoe because all you';re wearing is pins and bushings and some diesel. They're sweet. The only one better is a 550 with a shuttle shift and a converter.
Well, the best machine to clear land is a thirty thousand pound excavator or larger. But those are very good for moving material, grading, and such. It would be far too slow to clear a large tract of land especially considering the need to unearth rocks and boulders and stumps... But I'm sure you're going to love the machine. There is so much power and so much bottom end.
U can push trees over with that loader just takes practice. Dig around the roots first find which way the tree leaning. Raise the bucket all the way up. Once u start go all out. Pushing the tree over. Then, lift up the root.
Hi , You should use AW68 . Thats's what all of us guys use here in Hawaii . I used to use the John Deere Toque guard but at 110.00 per 5 gallons , maybe not so much since mine are older machines and prone to busting a hose every now and then . I sold my 450B track loader and have regretted it .
My cralwer is a straight 450 and the manuel says to use 303special for the bucket etc and hygaurd for the transmission but since they dont sell those where I live I use *travel renewed* it is an alternative

Oh one more thing, place a bucket or a can over that exause pipe when outside. Not let rain get in it. It did crank up very well. Don't let NO ONE!! start shooting ethyl in the air filter. If that ever starts. You'll do have to do it. Every time. When cold.
WIth the floor shift H-L-R (should be left console), and tach on the floor this is not a 450C; at best a B. Wet steering clutch linkage on C's hooks to small spool valve only. Early 450 & B(?) dry clutches have mechanical linkage only; dry clutches w/power steering have a booster cylinder in the mechanical linkage under seat-possibly on all B's.
Rick S Your all most right. My father owned an construction and excavation business back in the late 50's to 85. He had some 2010 JD's, 450B and C's. I believe the 450 crawlers (dozer and loaders) had the shuttle lever on floor (hydrostatic) B and C's had it up beside the gear selector on left. The late 2010's had the shuttle lever on the floor like the 450. The gear selector was on the left side of dash. Dad rented a couple new 450 dozer s on a job. The 450 had hard time pulling a double sheep's foot roller. They had to use the 2010 to pull the roller. What I was told back then, JD used the motor in the 450 as was in the 2010's. The B and C's models had improved engines. Compare the 2010 to the 450. The 450 was heavier machine. The B and C's were nice machines.

My father did borrow it a couple of times. I remember he was not very impressed since he was used to Caterpillar 225.
The backhoe arrangement had significant backlash, the machine was slow and had low capacity.
Forgot to mention, get some ripper teeth for your bucket if you're planning to clear land. It really makes a difference in digging hard soil and you can scarify by back dragging. Will also help dig into slag piles if you're planning to build roads or a driveway.

You've got yourself a really nice machine Sir. With the age of it, its going to have a few creaks, rattles and unwanted movement. Your idea with the chain and binder will probably work. My only suggestion is not to bind it to tight. But then again you know that. Other than spraying it off every once in awhile, keeping it greased and doing the required maintenance, I'd say you have a very nice machine.
Hey there, I am in the middle of purchasing my second 450, this time a 450B but this one has a backhoe, like yours... Do you know the weight of this configuration? Trying to buy a trailer to haul from site to site and need to make sure I'm buying enough trailer to be legal and not overloaded. Thanks! enjoying your channel.
When it's time to build up the tracks. That's pretty easy if u can weld. Watch that front spinnel. It's smash that finger. Keep it greased, always check the under carriage. Change fluids regularly. I see you didn't have a cut off switch. I'd put one on. That saves them high dollar batteries.
i'm not a trained equipment operator, however, i've had an old cat D4 tracked loader on my 142 acre farm in w.va. for a number of years. here's my thoughts.
1. i know you were doing a video but you should NEVER leave the maching with the loader up in the air like you did unless you engage the loader "safety" mechnism which is either a pin through the loader arms or some kind of support arm. if you lose a hydralic hose, this loader will com crashing to the ground quickly. i ALWAYS put my loader on the ground before exiting the maching.
2. your machine may not "see-saw" like most loaders do under a full bucket load because of the backhoe. however, that is a characteristic you should be aware of if you ever operate this machine without the backhoe.
3. always keep a full bucket as close to the ground as possible when moving the machine and only raise it to empty the bucket when the machine is stopped. remember, dirt/rock weigh MUCH more than you might think and you are dealing with basic physics with heavy machinery. the higher a full bucket is the higher the center of gravity is - any loader will roll over backwards if you have the bucket high up in the air, are moving backwards and try a sudden stop.
4. as to your backhoe, i'm sure you've learned that backhoes take a LONG time and lots of practice to operated safely and efficiently. they are a little like flying a helicopter and i have found that it is best to do very small hand movements and to CONCENTRATE! - don't have distractions when running a backhoe! also, i've found that it's good not to try and "overstress" a backhoe pull like you might when running the loader. when a backhoe arm is under extreme stress and it suddenly "breaks lose", the extreme vibration tranmitted through the machine is very hurtful to one's back - at least it hurt my back the few times i made this mistake.
i'm going to up-grade from my old Cat D4 to a newer Cat or a newer JD-450. i'm in the camp of believers that you can do almost as much with a loader as you can with a dozier and there are things you can ONLY do with a loader. and teeth on the bucket do make a big difference.
good luck, and rember SAFETY ALWAYS!!! most guys with decent intelligence and coordination can run heavy machinery but don't take chances and ALWAYS watch for people around and for where the machine is in reference to ground dangers. one last thing ... i always run my Cat at the lowest RPM required and never try to "work fast." if you are not charging/being paid for your time, there is no reason to "hurry-up" with machinery. that's when mistakes and/or accidents or death occur.
+jimharvard I'll take a good loader any day over a dozer the same size. I can put the material where I want it instead of having to run it down every time. You put down the good stuff. I don't even think about is as I have been doing it so long but it's good to read it again. Thanks!
jimharvard my thoughts exactly safety is paramount and never just take for granted that that machine cannot jump into gear with the bucket up I wouldn't get in front of it

You got a great machine , the gauge's are faded from being out in the sun , the left areas which are pink now would have been deep red originally, and the other marking which are gray would have been deep black. If you get the serial number and check online or with a John Deere dealer you can figure out the year it was built .
I have been looking everywhere on the machine for a serial number. I can't find it. Any idea where there would be a tag?
To date the track hoe JD 450 is the perfect all round machine. You are a lucky man. Nothing runs like a Deere
If u didn't know it. That loader has a guide on the right side .it's your leveler. For the bucket to show u that the bucket is level as u dig across the field.
Videoclipits, thanks for the encouragement. I will make a vid of it at work. Since this video, I have used it to move enormous rootpiles and rockpiles and graded the 1acre building site. The one thing that is a bit annoying is the backhoe tends to flop around and requires frequent adjustment. On one hand I want to remove it when using it for dozing and loading but on the other hand it provides great counterbalance. I think ill run a chain and binder across to keep it up and centered when in use. Ill report back once ive done that and played with it a bit!
koviack A quick connect hoe mount just bolts to the back of the loader frame and the hydraulic hoses run off the main system. Check the back housing for bolt holes and if it has them you can add the hoe hookup later. You can get them for 350's and 450's and most likely 550's or 555's too. Sweet machines and the quick connest is a real prize.

I did a lot of commercial work with this exact machine (minus the back hoe) - and we did typical dozer work with the loader bucket. It was really flexible, in that respect which was important because we did many different kinds of jobs; road work, cellar holes, land clearance, etc - for mid sized and large commercial sites and for small private home properties in suburban neighborhoods. It's strength was its versatility.
I just got a 1965 2010 similar to this. Should be good after I basically rebuild the entire thing.
Myself I owned a John Deere 450 Trackloader, awesome machine, plus I owned John Deere 310A Backhoe with digmoore extension, put 10,00 hour never changed fuel pump, it poured like kitten.
Make sure the gages stay true. Check that glass globe on the side. That you're window for your hydraulic fluid. Never let it run out of fuel. It's a pain to bleed. Or prime. As they say
I just bought a original 1959 International T340 Drott, 4 in 1 bucket. With 873 hours on it. It has more mechanical problems than yours for sure. But i Love the Deer you just bought wow so cool.
I think the hole machine look great because you can do about any thing with this dozer/loader/backhoe.
I had the 350c with a hoe attached. They are clunky and slow. But very versitile at the same time. Better in soft groud than a rubber tired strong and stable for hoe use

They are a very good machine and will do the work within it's limits. However, the steering brakes are a nightmare to replace
the entire cockpit has to be removed along w/ all linkages and track split, sprockets off, along with the final drive.
This is needed just to get to the steering brake. One big plus with the C model is it has wet steering brakes which last longer
compared to the earlier B model which has dry steering brakes. I have had both the 350 B and the 450 B the 450
will hold up much better than the 350 . Good luck with your new /old machine/

I really like it and it has really gotten me out of a jam a few times (see my "stuck in the mud" vids). I am VERY tender with it and do not beat on it at all...i want to minimize maintenance as best I can!!!!

We had same crawler with counder weights. On rear the under carage pooped the bed thease were good enough where guys are puting new under carages on them of corse the. Price of new dozzer is nuts but yep those dosers. Are great if you dont have ton of rocks great for what you need

As a cat man, i must ask why does john deer put a back hoe on everthing? And if you have used a track loader without a back hoe on it. Do you feel the weight on the back, and what cost/toll does the added weight take on the running gear?
I bought one 450c about 5 years age to work 25 acres in Blue Ridge Mountains. It is a 1976 model year. The only difference I see, is my gear changer is up beside the seat on the left side. It also has 4 forward and 4 reverses speeds in high or low range. I also has the two gear levers side by side with the safety trap door. I have no back hoe however there is a hydraulic levers for one and power takeoff in the rear with a cover on it. Mine has a large roll cage with lights front and rear. I would love to find a back hoe for it. The ones have seen cost more then I gave for the machine. ($4500) In pretty good shape. Watch your take ups on you tracks. If they get to loose you can roll the track off in a tight working turn. Once the track comes off, your in for a hard days work. Some people however know how to re-track it with a certain maneuver. I was not one of those people. I had to do it the hard way. It is a great machine for what you are asking of it. Just keep it greased. I found a couple of manuals off e-bay which explained everything from maintains to operation. Good Crawling to you Jerry
Thanks for the tip jerry! That machine has bailed me out so many times. Wasn't able to get the road completely finished before winter, so I have gotten stuck in the mud & in the snow more than once. And that was with very aggressive chains on my truck. The dozer hauled it out with no effort at all. I really need to get more acquainted with the machine. I have some hydraulic hoses that need to be replaced, but aside from that it really is in excellent shape. Any further tips you have, I would be very much appreciative of them!
I blew the main hydraulic hose when a limb got up in the under carriage. J D wanted $400 for the replacement. I went to a shop that carried a similar hose. It cost about $80. At that time I realized someone had bypassed the transmission Also try to find a J D owners manual. Several of the J D models are basically the same It really helped me.

Change all the fluids , like the other comments , good for your location , used to be very common machines , before case had frt, whl assist, they practically float ,very little ground pressure.
Take care of that machine and it'll be the ONLY one you'll ever need. I've operated one just like that a lot and they're very versatile. The hoe is detachable so if you need to just push you're not weighted down. Also the hoe digging is a lot easier that undercarriage wear. I always tried to do as much as I could with the hoe because all you';re wearing is pins and bushings and some diesel. They're sweet. The only one better is a 550 with a shuttle shift and a converter.

Well, the best machine to clear land is a thirty thousand pound excavator or larger. But those are very good for moving material, grading, and such. It would be far too slow to clear a large tract of land especially considering the need to unearth rocks and boulders and stumps... But I'm sure you're going to love the machine. There is so much power and so much bottom end.

U can push trees over with that loader just takes practice. Dig around the roots first find which way the tree leaning. Raise the bucket all the way up. Once u start go all out. Pushing the tree over. Then, lift up the root.

Hi , You should use AW68 . Thats's what all of us guys use here in Hawaii . I used to use the John Deere Toque guard but at 110.00 per 5 gallons , maybe not so much since mine are older machines and prone to busting a hose every now and then . I sold my 450B track loader and have regretted it .
My cralwer is a straight 450 and the manuel says to use 303special for the bucket etc and hygaurd for the transmission but since they dont sell those where I live I use *travel renewed* it is an alternative

Oh one more thing, place a bucket or a can over that exause pipe when outside. Not let rain get in it. It did crank up very well. Don't let NO ONE!! start shooting ethyl in the air filter. If that ever starts. You'll do have to do it. Every time. When cold.

WIth the floor shift H-L-R (should be left console), and tach on the floor this is not a 450C; at best a B. Wet steering clutch linkage on C's hooks to small spool valve only. Early 450 & B(?) dry clutches have mechanical linkage only; dry clutches w/power steering have a booster cylinder in the mechanical linkage under seat-possibly on all B's.

Your all most right. My father owned an construction and excavation business back in the late 50's to 85. He had some 2010 JD's, 450B and C's. I believe the 450 crawlers (dozer and loaders) had the shuttle lever on floor (hydrostatic) B and C's had it up beside the gear selector on left. The late 2010's had the shuttle lever on the floor like the 450. The gear selector was on the left side of dash. Dad rented a couple new 450 dozer s on a job. The 450 had hard time pulling a double sheep's foot roller. They had to use the 2010 to pull the roller. What I was told back then, JD used the motor in the 450 as was in the 2010's. The B and C's models had improved engines. Compare the 2010 to the 450. The 450 was heavier machine. The B and C's were nice machines.

If I remember right, the tractor/loader is about 14,000 lbs and the backhoe is about 3000 lbs.
If u got a dump truck too. U can do other jobs to help pay for the cost to fix that loader
Them cylinders not that hard to repack if they start leaking. Use grass rope and grease. And a screwdriver to push them in tight.

Most of the time .the only reason why guys use the can of eyther to use it to crank is because the heat electro has burned out. Get another one.
