I’m a 76 rear old great grandma. In the 70s we were dealing with the horrors of the Viet Nam war. This song was popular because it addressed the horrors of the war. I lived it. You who had not even been born did not. History is important. Consider this song when times change and you need to take a stand. I love your posts and follow you religiously.
Mel Tillis originally wrote the song about a soldier who was wounded in Germany in WWII. It was later shortened and said to be about a Korean War veteran. Kenny's popular hit was assumed to be about Vietnam only because it was released in 1969 during that conflict.
@@757optim Also he mentions the Asian war in the lyrics, being in the Navy during the 70's and '80's these type songs even though the subjects were tough ones we still loved all of them especially the protest songs the dicotomy of that period is intersting now when looking back 50 years.

@@davidgross990 Yes, I don't know the original lyrics that would have referred to Germany. From reading about the history of the song, we are told the "Asian war" was Korea. I assumed it was a reference to Vietnam at the time and as a VN vet, I probably still do.

Farm Aid was a fund raising event run and put together by Willie Nelson. It was an annual event for some years. Tons of super famous singers performed.
My favorite Kenny Rogers song, original was released in 69 Kenny Rogers and the First Edition, another good one is Rueben James, and Jimi Hendrix favorite Just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in, check them out when you have a chance
Hey!!!!!! Great to be the First!!! There was a song that answered Ruby, too! I forget what it was.......An answer song to "Ruby," entitled "Billy, I've Got to Go to Town," was released in 1969 by Geraldine Stevens
His legs were bent and paralyzed because he got messed up in the war, he's in a wheelchair, YES, you got it right! I love it when you put on your Hardy Boys hat and figure out what the song is about! If I could I'd leave you a whole bunch of thumbs up! Every time!
You got it right. He said he was bent & paralyzed & they said he wouldn't be around much longer. Apparently, Ruby couldn't wait that long. He had heard the slamming door 'a hundred times before'.
"Farm Aid" is an Annual Concert (1985-Present) with superstars to raise money for Farmers having a tough time Finanicially....... Other Performers have been Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, John Mellencamp, Loretta Lynn, Alabama, Huey Lewis and countless others each year......
About 1984 , I saw that one at my University, The Rightous Brothers opened, followed by the Oak Ridge Boys then Kenny. I saw him again in 91 when the Gatling Brothers opened.
Oh, I could not be happier, that you did this!! This song is from the era when Kenny first came to recognition; when he was with the group, "The First Edition"---I've been a HUGE fan of his, since those early days; 'course, it doesn't hurt, that he was so friggin' gorgeous!!! Please do "Reuben James", from that same era, next---it's those story songs, that everybody loves, so much!!! Again, thankyou SOOOO much, for doing this!!! ❤️
❤❤ Uncle Kenny started with this song❤❤ farm aid is a big concert raising money farmers. ITS in Indianapolis this year. Loving your channel from here in Indiana😊
Here's a live performance of Kenny Rogers and the First Edition - Reubin James (1970)" this song was a big hit but not as big a hit as their song "Ruby" which I believe you've already reacted to; this song came out in 1969. A much younger version of the sexy Kenny Rogers. Really fun reaction, AB thanx so much
Kenny was in a group in the 60's called *The First Edition. They did this song back then. Kenny went solo and recorded it.on an album. It's one of his most popular songs. *** Check out Kenny and The First Time edition doing: * " I Just Dropped in to See What Condition My Condition Was In". Yeah, it's a long title! 😄 Kenny: * "Lucille" ( video live in concert) * "She Believes in Me" * "You Can't Make Old Friends"....a duet with Dolly Parton.
I have this song on a LP. He was with the First Edition. I remember that horrible war in nam. They way the soldiers where treated when they returned home was a disgrace to Americans everywhere. Going back to Kenny Rogers & The First Edition, they had a lot of #1 hits. Look them up
this was the 1st live aid 1985 in Champaigne Illinois I wasthere with a bunch of friends this was the first time Eddie Van Halen and Sammy Hagar performed together
You should review some of Kenny’s song when he was the lead singer for The First Edition. This is when he first recorded Ruby. He was also more of a rock group he recorded I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.
I graduated HS in 1985.. my oldest son was born in 1988.. I'm guessing close to your age.. I grew up in Hair Band Era.. and I love my Hair Bands.. but my Pop-Pop raised me on old country.. I've loved country music my whole life.. I remember in HS my friends would make fun of me because I loved country.. a few years later.. Garth Brooks came out.. dang.. all of a sudden my friends from HS loved country.. I was like.. get over yourselves.. Do you even know who Johnny Cash is... don't call yourself a country fan because you like some Garth. lol. My parents raised me on Frank Sinatra and Elvis.. I taught myself 70's rock.. I love music
Less attention to beat and extraneous flowers and more attention to the words would help understanding. He was singing about a soldier who returned from war severely paralyzed and dying only for his wife to carry on like a tramp. She wouldn't even wait a couple months for him to die, but instead flaunted her infidelity and lack of feelings for him as she dressed up every night to go to town and pickup men while leaving him helpless and alone at home. Far too common a story during wartime.
@@ABtheKreator I'm a subscriber and I love your reactions. Unfortunately, the music industry has pushed more emphasis on beat and none on actual content on the younger generations as a way to too often make money on trash so sometimes a little reminder is needed that content first, then analyze beat, artist, performance etc to truly appreciate an older song.

He was wounded severely in the war. He wasn't going to live much longer. Ruby was stepping out all the time. Being paralyzed he couldn't go after her.

Please do Teddy Bear by Red Sovine
In wheelchair from war , she cheats on him
I'm the story he was fighting in a war and got injured. He was left with twisted legs and paralysed
He came back from Viêt Nam crippled. He’s going to die soon but she keeps stepping out. He wants her to stay and keep him company.
Kenny Rogers got flowers, Tom Jones had panties thrown at him on stage 😮
Plz do do Sara evans - perfect
Late 70, early 80s there wasn't a female in the US that didn't have the screaming thigh sweats for Kenny.
The studio version is slower (this is so rushed!), better audio, and more emotion.
He was a paralyzed veteran so he couldn’t get up
Suggestion. Bring up lyrics as you listen to be sure you understand what it's about.
