Mel wrote this song about a neighbor that live by him in Florida. He talks about it in an interview. Kenny Rodger started as a Rock Band with a big hit called "Just walked in to see what condition my condition was in".. This song Ruby came out right after I returned from the Vietnam War. It was my 1st tour out of three!!
This song is about a veteran who is paralyzed from combat in Vietnam. His wife leaves him laying in his bed while she got us out and shares her affections with others than him. He knows that his injuries are going to kill him shortly and he just wants her to stay with him until then. That's why the last lyric is for god sakes turn around. She's breaking a broken man's heart.
@@davidbeckham4523 That is the story I heard. I believe this took place when Tillis was just a kid. It is about a wounded veteran and the British nurse that followed him to America to take care of him. After time went by the nurse had second thoughts about what that long term relationship would actually involve.
That song is a masterpiece especially when Kenny Rogers and the first Edition play it, a really catchy tune that you don't get bored of, the singing, the instrumentation, awesome!!!! Your female friend there seems a bit tone deaf, or maybe she's not really a music person, there are people out there that like music, but they're not crazy about music like us 😂
I love this song as kid when it came out I was 11 years old. I still love the song and think it's one of his best. I never new Mel Tillis wrote it though.
It says in the song that he didn’t start that old crazy Asian war but he was proud to go and do his patriotic sure; he and Ruby were obviously boyfriend and girlfriend before the war but he came back paralyzed and the ones in the needs of a woman her age and he tells her Ruby I realize; but he also tells her that he won’t be long because he’s heard that he won’t be around he’s going to pass away and he just wants Ruby to stay with him until he dies Ruby is going out at night to find other men to fill her wants and needs! This sadly happened to a lot of men who came home disabled from Vietnam!
@@hhhgfcvjk7999 Yes, I know that, but the song was on the radio in the Vietnam War. "Ruby" was first recorded by Waylon Jennings in 1966. Johnny Darrell reached number nine on the country charts with the song in 1967,[1] and Kenny Rogers and The First Edition released it in 1969.
Dude give her a chance to listen to & absorb it. She's not stupid give her a chance. I'm not saying that to be mean but it's such a powerful song you got to be a little patient if you want her to appreciate it.✌️
Search for and enjoy the songwriter, Mel Tillis, performing it solo with acoustic guitar on the Porter Wagoner show in 1967. Kenny Rogers did a most famous cover as shown here. But to paraphrase a famous movie saying, "We don't need no stinkin' bandzes!" 🙂
(a Canadian Singer/Songwrite). As fate would have it, I married a Canadian in the mid 70's and lived in Toronto for several years. My husband was very fond of Gordon Lightfoot's music. Being exposed to it on a daily basis, I soon realized that I actually, very much enjoyed his music. To this day he is still one of my favorite musicians. I enjoyed your reaction videos.
God I love this song . Heard it for the first time when I was 8, on my street from a house . 1969. Written by country star of the 60’s-70’s, mainly . Great sad story
This Pop song is more Country then than Country is now. I prefer this song to his later Country songs. Probably my favorite by him. They lyrics rang so true.
The constant stopping gets annoying. Know you have to pause for copyright, but damn. 4 bars, stop. 6 bats stop. Stopping once or twice and giving your thoughts is fine. I almost quit watching because of the constant interruptions. Just advice, take it as you will. But some will write you off just for that.
I realize that stopping a song is the nature of the beast of reaction channels, but when you stop it, make sure to have something to say worthy of the stoppage. If one must mansplain, at least have a mansplain where the audience might learn something. You are so enthusiastic to make sure she understands the song, your disruptions make it more difficult for her to understand the song.
This is about a soldier that was wounded in action during the time of the Vietnam War. I saw this type of stuff happening during my tour in US ARMY. Many guy's killed themselves after coming back to the world. This stuff continues to happen to Soldiers from the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, Afghanistan and Gulf War 2. The war on terror.
Favorite Kenny Rogers song, "Love Will Turn You Around". A great Mel Tillis song, 'Who's Julie". Plus a great war related song Glen Campbell's "Galveston".
Finally...very few reactions to this song... . A line in the song about a "crazy Asian war" and the time of the song's release led to the assumption the song was about a veteran of the Vietnam War-though this was never stated in the lyrics-although Tillis stated that the song was about a veteran of World War II.[3]
This happened a lot to veterans from Vietnam who came home disabled! That’s the crazy Asian war he was speaking of! He could no longer satisfy the wants and needs of young Ruby; so, Ruby went out and got her wants and needs filled by other men!
Not a complaint, but that audio track is incorrect. No audience sounds, Kenny's Telecaster bass playing doesn't match the video, etc. Check out the same video on the allallallthetime channel titled "Kenny Rogers & The First Edition - Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" for the actual live performance audio. in case you are interested.
I've always liked the sound of this song, partly because of the very simple, appropriate accompanying music. Have you showed her the other side of Kenny Rogers? How about his psychedelic 'Just Dropped In' with the First Edition?
The song would ring more true if you lived during the Vietnam war. Back then as you grew up in high school you learned of people a year or two older than you that graduated and got killed or maimed in an unpopular war. Each year there was a lottery based on birthdays that helped decide who would have to go to war. The scale of the war meant everyone knew a least a few people that were drafted and sent to the war. I have gone to the Vietnam War memorial in Washington D.C. and have seen the names of buddies that were killed. Did you know that you can fire a 50 cal from a helicopter and cut a running man in half and the bottom half can keep running for 10 yards? I don't know what memories you have of your senior trip. I wish I could forget mine.
the sound on my end. 🤦♀️ Fix that and more people will listen. Says a women who don't know about this technical s*^"t. Yeah, big lady just sits and comments. No. Actually grew up in the '70 with Kenny and trying to help you. Sorry if I have overstepped my mark.
The two of you don't really get it. Too many interruptions. He was a viet nam veteran who came back crippled and does not have long to live. His wife was cheating on him with other men.
This is my first time to watch one of your reaction videos so I don't know the whole backstory of where the two of you are coming from but from what I see I assume the two of you prefer different genres of music. Music has ALWAYS been a big part of my life. I was a teenager in the 60's and 70's, which was an amazing era of different kinds of music that all managed to cross over, whether it was Easy Listening, Motown, Pop Rock, Soft Rock, Hard Rock, Acid Rock, or Country! There was very few recording artists that I did not like. I grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and listened to all music. However, for some reason, I DID NOT LIKE Gordon Lightfoot (a Canadian

I know you excited to share this song with her.. But you got to give her a chance .. You stopped it waaaaaay too much.I know you really love the song so do I . i was 13 when it came out ,it played on radio constantly. I understood it at 13, she understood it too, it's just so dark that he has thoughts of killing her cause he feels so abandoned as many disabled vets sadly were.. But he married the wrong girl or maybe just a too young immature girl.. The whole thing is sad & He's dying to boot but ...no one should rely on another for their happiness... That's not right or healthy for anyone.
I detest this song. The character of the song lost all my sympathy as soon as he said he would like to get his gun and murder her. Sorry, we don't dole out the death penalty just because someone is having an affair. It will mostly be men who say "Aw, heck it's just locker room talk." Yeah.

Actually it was written by Mel Tillis. He says it was written about a veteran of the Second World War.
According to Mel Tillis, the writer of the song, said it’s about a Korean , not Vietnam, war veteran

These lyrics applied to so many back then.
It’s actually about the Korean War

Mel Tillis wrote this song? I had no idea. You learn something new everyday.
Agreed, my favorite part of the reaction
About a true story written and sung about the Korean War!
I know what's its about I have been listening to it since the 1970's

Love when he sang “ I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in”!
Very cool song.
Mel Tillis said it's a true story, but he never said who the war vet was ✌️❤️R.I.P Mel Tillis

Mel Tillis , songwriter. Sorry forgot his name 😁.
Life is rough. Soldiers coming back from wars always got the short end of the stick.
The dude loves his own voice,
This Pop song is more Country then than Country is now. I prefer this song to his later Country songs. Probably my favorite by him. They lyrics rang so true.
Kenny is Great 👍 look up "The cold hard facts of life" by Porter Wagner. It's a great murder ballad 😎

You have to stop it several times anyway to avoid being demonetized by RUclips for using another artist’s content.
Love Kenny. R.I.P
i just luv the accents

It was life thru the 60s wars was ruff.
Also, John Denver & Olivia Newton John were cross overs way back in the 70's : )

Buddy, PIPE DOWN and just let her listen to it!
If you're a gentleman the lady's always wright! 😂This song is like the Tom Jones song Dahlia. Sounds cheerful, but it's about a murder ✌️❤️
Delilah about sexual jealousy
This song was written as our boy’s were coming home from the Vietnam war.

This isn't exactly rare for deployments unfortunately. If you get deployed, prepare to slowly lose everything you love that year away.
Sad but this stuff happens alot😢
Unfortunately a lot of songs at that time are not as happy as they sound. It was a way to protest.

Billy Joel's, You May be Right
That last line just kills me

.Just Dropped In..

This is my favorite song of his. I always thought it was the Vietnam War.
It had the most relevance to people during Vietnam in 1969 so to most people it’s a Vietnam song.

How did someone come up with this??? Veterans deal with this all the time!
