  • Learn how to develop unique and great design concepts in architecture that will bring you great results in architecture school. You’ll find out what an architecture concept is, why having a good architecture concept is important and how to develop your own architectural concept that will drive your design process.
Want to create impressive concepts for your projects?
Check out the 60 minute Concept Course on my website!
    successfularchistudent.com/co...
Check out the video’s notes at successfularchistudent.com/ho...
    - Step 1 for Developing a Concept for Architectural Design
    Understanding the Brief
You first need to read and UNDERSTAND the brief. Read it 100 times if you must. This is the most important step.
Once you’ve understood it - READ IT AGAIN.
Then, write down or highlight the most important information. Break it down so that you understand what the client (or teacher) wants.
    - Step 2 for Developing a Concept for Architectural Design
    Creating Lists
What I like to do is create a list.
List the key features that are required
    List the rooms you’ll need
List the constraints - things to avoid
    - Step 3 for Developing a Concept for Architectural Design
Create diagrams showing the amount of space required.
Quite often we have a space requirement or limitation. Rooms can only be so big or so small.
Create a diagram of this and understand how big each space needs to be, even if it’s just roughly.
At least get an understanding of the difference of size between the two.
    - Step 4 for Developing a Concept for Architectural Design
    Think About the Site
If you’re doing a school project where no site has been allocated - make one up.
The site is about 20% of the design because of orientation, neighbouring buildings etc. You’re not going to design a small little home next to a skyscraper.
You’re not going to have a glass wall on the western (or eastern) façade - it will heat the building up like crazy.
Analyse the site. Make sure you understand where north is, neighbouring buildings
If you are designing a extension - do you want to compliment it or detract from it?
    - Step 5 for Developing a Concept for Architectural Design
Develop a Key Theme for your Concept
Come up with a key theme.
Maybe the client has mentioned they like surfing. You can use that as a guide for the rest of your design. Maybe the house curls in on itself like a wave.
Maybe the client is a space astrologist. Design the house to resemble a rocket ship.
It comes back to understanding the brief, understanding what it is the client wants. Who they are, what they do every day, what they like to eat, the way they use their current home.
    - Step 6 for Developing a Concept for Architectural Design
    Revise Your Concept Over Time
Come back to it. It requires a lot of time - which is why it’s important to start early.
Consciously thinking about a concept and trying to nut it out in one sitting is very difficult and stressful.
In “deep work” this is what Cal Newport talks about. How the greatest ideas come over time. From walking, and taking thinking breaks, going for jogs, driving around town.
From here, every time you’re considering a design element. What door handles should you have? What does the bathroom counter look like? You might design the door handle to curl up like a wave. Or your counters might be in the shape of a surf board.
This doesn’t mean everything should look like a wave - it simply means that everything should be derived from the one overarching theme of surfing.
Whenever you’re stuck trying to think of a design element - it doesn’t take you 10 years to come up with an idea. Everything is linked and the building is fluent with a strong theme.
A lot of teachers say that the design concept is only 5% of the project. It shouldn’t consume a lot of your time - especially once you’ve got experience thinking of them.
But this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t spend much time on it. It simply means that you should consistently come back to it to revise and rethink and restructure.
The further into a design you get - the more impact changes will have on the outcome of cost, labour, time etc.
Effective people make changes slowly, if at all. Ineffective people make changes quickly and often.
So that's how you come up with a concept for architectural design! Hope that helps :)

Hey man, South African architect here. Great job on the video!👌 I can see you are going to be a great architect. Just a bit of criticism (as I'm sure your have gotten used to in architecture school). The way you start your design analysis and concept development is a very "ticking the boxes" way of going about it. In your example, you state the diagram about the gym, bedroom, office, etc. Being a certain size (and trust me, I did the same thing). You will find later in your career that these sizes are very much dependant on other aspects of the design, such as relationship, circulation, light, solid and void, moments, etc. In many instances I have dealt with clients that want a 80sqm room as an example, but they don't really understand how big it is or what the implications of such a space would be on the rest of the building. Just don't let the list define your design, it becomes old quick. Get a solid concept going and develop the spaces around it. It makes for more dynamic and exciting designs.
Then on the "understanding the brief". I have to agree that the brief is important, but it is very easy to get stuck into it. Many clients give you a list of rules and parameters to follow, which in all honesty, mostly leads to something dull and boring. Remember, you studied this, you are the spatial expert. As architects we think in a multi faceted way, rather than most clients who think about buildings quite linearly. Don't be afraid to come up with alternative solutions and to propose this to the client/lecturer. A good architect can follow the brief to a T, but a great architect adapts it as needed to create something special.
Now with choosing the site, when one has not been given. I can't agree with you more. Designing with no context is pointless. You will end up with a brilliant looking building that just simply doesn't work. However, the way you speak about site and context seems to imply that your designs try to mimic or "fit in" with the surroundings, which isn't always a bad thing. But don't be afraid to challenge the status quo. If your concept calls for something drastically different, go for it and stand by it! As an example, I did a competition of a library design for one of Johannesburgs run down commercial/residential areas and presented it to the relevant authorities. Now the words run down and commercial already paints a picture for you. The library was a 8 storey modern and naturalist design, with many "green" aspects and fluid dynamic forms. This towered above all the two storey rectilinear warehouse type structures in the surroundings, but it made a statement for change. The building was never intended to be built, but rather to serve as an example of what the city could be. Since the competition, the city has incorporated many green spaces and multi use building typologies along the "Green Architecture" line of thinking to create a more lively and engaging community. Again, if following the example of that which came before, the city would remain a dull place to be in. Challenge the system when you need to! As long as you put the work and research into it, you are golden!
Again man, great video and keep up the good work. You are going places! If you would ever like any external crits or an outside perspective on your work, feel free to get in touch!

hi my name is Ronn and I just want to ask if how to start write a concept statement? because I'm struggling with it

    • @kylesinko
      @kylesinko  3 года назад +2

Hi Ronn, good question. I think it's not something that should be done after the matter, but consistently worked on and refined over the course of a project. Like drawing sections and plans while working on models of a concept, you don't finish your final model and then start drawing plans. You work on all 3 of these at the same time and refine them over time. It is something that should be built up over time and consistently come back to.
I would start with writing key words or key ideas of your project. Try structuring these key thoughts into paragraphs and finalise it with an intro and conclusion, that would be my best advice.
      Cheers Ronn

    • @kylesinko
      @kylesinko  3 года назад +2

Of course Liam. A brief is a document put together by an architect that lists the information provided by the client in terms of their desires for the project (or sometimes a template is given to a client to fill in themselves). For example, it might include the different types of programs required, the size of spaces, the client's budget, their aspirations for the project and so forth. It is the beginning document to help identify the wants, needs and constraints of a project. Hope that helps :)
