Hey Dr. Webb, thank you for this video! I've always wondered why don't surgeons sit during surgery? And what are some ways surgeons train to be standing for such long hours?

For some delicate operations, such as neurosurgery, the surgeon might be sitting. As far as I know

Compression socks help with standing for a long time. Also leg press exercises
I carry weight all the time, like 70lbs weighted blanked with me at all times, that way I am used to standing while being heavier than I actually am. Which is gonna happen sometimes because you are wearin lead

We can definitely sit during the surgery if a stool is available and a tech or circulating nurse can position it for us without contaminating the field. I’m 6’1 and am frequently the tallest one at the table so I’ll sit if possible. But in general you have to read the room and know what’s going on. Some procedures won’t allow for it, and some attending doctors “set the tone” which could make you feel kinda out of place if you were the only one sitting. Standing for long periods of time comes with training experience and comfy shoes as well haha

Before RN school, I was a Surgical Tech. 😉 I would guess I’ve only had to scrub out about 2-3 times in those 3 years. Usually those were cases that took 7+ hours like an ALIF. My credit really goes to the surgeon because we at least get relief to eat, they would continue through an 8 or 9 hour procedure without eating or drinking anything. 🫣😬
