Great reaction! You should also check out 'Ride Across the River' from Sydney 1986. There is an amazing back and forth between Mark Knopfler's guitar and Chris White's flute.
This track is also used on one of the best scenes in one of the most decorated television shows in history, West Wing. At the end of the episode "Two Cathedrals" which was also the end of Season 2.
I've seen mark knopfler live 13 times and I've seen Chris white playing this flute and his saxophone, the chills from the flute and knopflers guitar is just incredible when your there, and you will never witness anything quite like this ever again 🥺
Mark always looks like he is pouring himself a nice cuppa. Watch the live performances from the Alechmy Tour. They are among the best what the music universe has ever produced. I especially loved the calpyso version of "So far away". But, well, they just cannot put a foot wrong.
Great video, Claire well done. I never fully appreciated the flute contribution to this song until now. I've always had mixed feeling about Mark Knopfler as a singer, but as a guitarist/songwiter he was first class. There were lots of great albums in the charts in the mid 80s. My favourite band: Genesis had a multi-platinum seller called "Invisible Touch" despite having to compete with this one on the market. On the album was a song in two parts called "Domino" The first part called "In The Glow OF The Night" had a flute (or panflute ?)type introduction so I would like you have a listen to it sometime. When Genesis played it live it was just Tony Banks on his synthesizer but I hope you have listen to see if you can discover how they created the sound in the studio xx.
Hello Claire from Hull, Yeah Dire Straits help launched the CD industry - and what a classic album. I've had occasion to visit Hull a few times, and Beverly and York - it's a bit off the beaten track and hemisphere for me, but I had a very pleasant time there. See you soon ...
@@ClaireHoldich Thank you - sorry I drifted from wind instruments onto Yorkshire so abruptly. I was actually on course to become an oboe maestro, I should have commented more on topic - sorry - was busy yesterday just as I am now. I've got your reply in my inbox, I'll use it to come back later when the pressure is off, and look through some more of your reactions to comment on, as I'm really not current on oboe or pan pipe any more.
Hi just discovered your channel. Very nice. I went to their concert in '91 and the flute was crystal clear and loud. It was in a Tennis arena here in Melbourne Australia and acoustics was fabulous. I really think you'll love the performance Ride Across The River - Live Dire Straits: The Final Concert - Sydney 1986. The AI version is here on RUclips and it's the opening song. The flute here you will enjoy very much I feel. There's a lot of it. Anyway Cheers and all the best from Australia. 👍🎸🎺🎷
Hello from France, there are fantastic songs of Jimi Hendrix with some flute....I don't remember exactly (I just got 44 in september😂, too old to remember😂)....I remember it was with Steve winwood, and ANOTHER bootleg I Heard, but I DON'T remember, SORRY....About Dire straits, The 1992 tour WHICH came in the old roman ruins in Nimes France, he PLAYED flute and thé show was MONSTRUOUS....Peace from France
Hi, you’ll find plenty of flute in songs by Mark Knopfler during his solo career. I’d mention The Scaffolder’s Wife and Get Lucky (you’ll love them!!). But also Haul Away and One Song At A Time (great!). As someone said the 1985 live version of Ride Across The River by Dire Straits.
On your piece about Dire Straits hitting that million mark on CD the first group or solo artist to do it was Harry Belafonte in 1956 with his album Calypso.
Though this *ISN'T* from the Brothers in Arms studio CD album (the success of which Claire was accurately describing). It's from one of their many live performances, specifically from (I think) their 'On the Night' live album, recorded at Les Arenes, Nimes, and Rotterdam in May 1992. And IMO the best of their live performances.
You have evidently not heard, “Can’t You See”, by The Marshall Tucker Band. The best flute opening to a rock song IMO. Toy Caldwell is not their main lead singer, but he wrote this song while serving in Vietnam about all of his buddies getting “Dear John” letters from their girlfriends back home and the pain that they went through. Toy sings and plays lead guitar on this one, though he is the regular lead guitarist. Link below. “Can’t You See” ruclips.net/video/dlc6xCPx60U/видео.htmlsi=vW8a0pxAfrPhx9LA
HEY Claire, it's Julien the french guy again, of course, you know the classical pieces with flute, yesterday I told about Jimi Hendrix and Dire Straits, I forgot, to tell you about a fantastic songs with flute sound but, not played with a flûte....LED ZEPPELIN, THE BASSIST, KEYBOARDIST, LEGEND, JOHN PAUL JONES, USED A KEYBOARD, WITH A SOUND OF FLUTE, IN ONE OF THE MOST LEGENDARY SONG EVER... Not a flute with the two following, but very awesome, with their instruments. 1. Here is a pennywhistle, song is Special Star by Mango Groove. 2. Pan flute, Song is El Condor pasa by Leo Rojas.
I personally love the guitarr in the og video, think it makes a better video. If you an old guy like me you rember this from Miami Vice, driving the Ferrari

Love the finger picking guitar solo.
Congratulations, you found the best live version of this great song, the best by far!
It's always been my favourite version. Even over the revered Mandela version. Love it all but the On Every Street tour was fire on all songs.
Nice reaction ❤ in my opinion DS Best band every, Mark Knopfler is Genius i was lucky to see this Tour in 1992
Wembley 1988 , with eric Clapton
The guy playing the pedal steel guitar, always reminds me of the one on the Road House (1989) movie,
Are you talking about Jeff Healey? You realize that guy was blind and one of the best guitar players!
@@TheLoner73 Yes, that's the one. The face and especially the hairstyle are very similar.

CD not albums. CD format discs and players were not released until 1982. This album was released in 1985 and was the first to sell a million CD's.
-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')
