The same question I get when someone asks, why would you tour on a 50 cc scooter, I always tell them that there are people around the world touring on bicycles loaded down with camping gear. Compared to that, a 50 cc scooter is a piece of cake.
My current jitters are about booking a train ticket to my start point on the west coast. I plan to take 2 months to ride back home. (I'm 64 but have some touring experience) There seems to be no public transportation to get me and my bike to the train station 166 miles away in Chicago without disassembly boxing the bike. Rather than impose on friends and family for a full day of their time driving I'll probably just ride the bike there. I'll probably allow a week for that because I like to talk with locals way too much and I'd like to enjoy Chicago until the train leaves.
You Mike check with Amtrak about a bike box at the station there boxes are bigger some disassembly, lower you seat turn your handle bar roll you bike into box, buy some packing tape before you get to the station. I’ve done many times, just not for 15 years. So take two more days or three and ride to the station. As a professional bicycle tourist may I suggest the four panniers system with a Handel bar bag, you’ll find adding a triangle rack on front forks give you greater control on desent’s help with high speed wobbling of the read of your bike. Take easy the first few days, increase your distance as you feel, keep in mind you won’t have the speed like without the weight, just enjoy the freedom set you own pace. You’ll love it. PS pack to much? Head to a post office they have boxes mail it home, used book rate.

It wasn't going to be a long ride, just out into North Dakota and back, but I was scared to death. Not because of the bridge, I had opted for the bridge next to it, fifteen minutes before. But because you are stepping of the sidewalk and into the place where the wild things are. And I have to carry it all on my bike. So you think you have everything covered, but not too covered. LOL The important thing is to do it. Get out there and do it.

The jitters are always a part of bike touring.They always fade as I start rolling. Sometimes the jitters hit in the middle of the night when I'm in my tent. . Movement seems to calm them. Bike touting is one of the last great land adventures left. Rest and sleep are more important than food at times for mental stabilty.

Wow what fun! I happened on your Boston to Ca videos because you passed thru a town near me. Grand Rapids Mi. I have been on some of those same trails. BUT with an ebike. I am older now, as a kid I rode 50 miles on my stingray. . tehee that was our farthest ride. Can't imagine a 60 or 70 mile plus ride day after day. You are one tough fella. I ended up BINGE watching all the videos Boston to Ca you posted. Truly enjoyed seeing the sights. My buddy and I both have a spare battery now. We hope to plan some type of a couple night adventure on these ebikes. We both do not like ridding along any roads or shoulders. I am sure that can not be helped getting to a place to stay. I hope we get to camp out not just hit motels. But no matter what just getting out there, electric bike or not is the ticket, so memorable. Peddle on brother. And thanks for sharing your adventures. This 4th season that is currently uploading is without doubt a top notch tour of the south east and later on more of the rockies and the west including all the parks in Utah as well as Death Valley before finishing up in Los Angeles. About the e-bike, I'm totally with you. They are providing amazing opportunities to so many people and they are helping change the transportation culture all over the world. I hope you get out there with your buddy and do some touring. Your state has great camping access as well as great motels as well. I remember enjoying both as I rode thru Michigan. I'll take a bit more time to get through this trip. With the peek into four months after the start, and watching you pitching the new tent for the first time gave a great view of long-distance cycling grooming standards. 😂 At the beginning you looked like you'd started in Paris Island Marine Recruit Depot. So many people with tighter time schedules and jobs / families to get back to, cross the country on a beeline. I love how your cross country trips have zig zagged all over the country. It makes for a really interesting trip to follow. Happy trails.
Great comment. The hair part is on purpose for two reasons. First one is to give the viewer a sense of time past and the other is to better manage with the insane heat I knew I was going to deal with during the first month of this tour. As for the zig zag comment, I have never seen the goal of touring across the country as just that. I love to go see this place and that one and if I had more time it would look like a bee doing donuts than an EKG graph. Thank you for noticing.

This road in South Carolina over the Savannah river didn't feel safe at all when I rode there. I actually turned back to Georgia from there. That's probably the only time I have turned back. Great start of season four. I do short weeklong rides but when you go it's for months, awesome! 👍 Looking forward watching all your upcoming videos. That foggy morning was gorgeous.

dude, how do you navigate!! how do you choose roads to take. I mean on google maps there's a bicycle emblem that indicates i guess routes or how long it takes. do you use this. just wondering? nice video, keep'em coming!!
I use google maps in both the cycling and drive modes comparing the options. I look at the satellite images to look for shoulders and ask locals for advice.
Great to follow you on another adventure. I saw your Co-Motion for sale. Can you share what you didn’t like about it? Why didn’t you start in the Keys?
Even though the Co-Motion is practically brand new it doesn't have much value relative to how much it cost me. I use it on flat ground around the neighborhood but not for training. When I do my training rides I use my Lynskey GR300, it's a far superior bike. If you read the comments from Season 3 (Episodes 1-6) you will get the whole scoop as to why I didn't care for the Co-Motion and its Pinion drivetrain. About my starting point, one of my goals is to document all 50 states (6 remain) and it made sense to start in Beaufort so I could ride thru Georgia and the rest of the states heading west that I haven't toured yet. I also have a late start leaving in August because I have to finish my guiding season into July here in the Florida Keys. To be able to reach the Rockies and Utah and climb the high mountain passes I don't have any time to spare so I can avoid the winter, maybe. As you will see I end up with plenty of 20F weather and even below that. Thank you for your question and for watching the channel.
Would love to see a list of the gear your hauling on your bike tour. Are you packing a cook set and food? Trying to keep my Surly bridge club and gear less then 100 lbs. With nothing loaded my bike weighs 42 lbs with the racks.
Hi Steve. My camping gear is listed in the description box of the episodes but not my clothes and cooking stuff. I keep as light as possible because I love to climb and weight does make a huge difference. My rig weights around 80 to 85 pounds depending on when and where Im going that given day or days. Carrying water is the biggest factor. My cooking is simple with a Ti pot and stove set up. The isobutane canister is what adds the weight so I wait till the last minute to get a replacing one. I carry food for two days at the most and it's all dehydrated goods for the most part, ramen, jerky, pasta packs, and sweets. My biggest issue is all the filming equipment with extra batteries, chargers, cables and such.
that is son cool you stayed in crawfordville ga. AH STEPHENS is one of my favorite state parks. I live in ga, just south of AH STEPHENS STATE PARK. I would have met up with you and shared some biking stories. Anyhow such a cool video!! Btw , what kind of touring bike are you using? And are your bags waterproof or your using rain covers. i just bought some pvc waterproof panniers, and i put them in da shower and tested them out.Turns out the zippers leak, but the main compartment was dry.
AH Stephens was great. I use a Lynskey GR300 and it's bad ass. This was my first tour with it and it proved to be all that and more. If you go to the description page of this first episode you will see I listed every component I used to build the bike from lights to wheels and even the combination of panniers I use. My go to panniers are Arkel, bomb proof and totally water tight. Their Orcas are top notch.
I used to Arkel panniers. The Dolphin 32 was for the hotter first half of this tour and the Orcas I used for the colder weather. I recommend them both and any products from Arkel, and Im not affiliated 🙂

I know what you mean about hearing negative thoughts from others when your about to set of on an adventure. It's something I j hear from my wife and grown up kids when I suggest to them I am planning a long cycle trip. According to them there's someone waiting to murder me around every corner. So I compromise and set off on an adventure on my motorcycle instead. Still great fun though but I am sure that I miss many things as I speed past them. Great to see you new tour....do you plan out the whole tour and where your staying each night or do it the day before. I'm planning my Pacific coast tour in July and hoping to use warmshowers in towns that don't have hike/bike sites in the state parks. Will be riding my Surly Bridge Club 27.5 gravel bike 1x11 with 16 gear inches for climbing but I spin out on the flats and downhills. Thinking of going 2x or 3x to get more gear range.
You are going to love the west coast route. Likely the best experience touring in the country. About my planning, I don't hardly do any. I hate knowing too much of what's ahead of me so I keep the forwards info as I need to basis. The PCBR has so much camping options that you will likely not need Warmshowers that often. There are lots of folks who offer it though so it's there if you plan ahead for it. About your gearing, it sounds like you are all set up but hard to know form the info you are sharing. I use an 11-34 cassette with a 30/46t crank.
I rode a Lynskey GR300, best bike I've ever had. My camping gear list is in the description box of every episode as well as a list of the bike's components. The rest is filming equipment, clothes depending on weather, cooking pot and fuel canister, spare parts, water bottles, and food for two days at the most.

Hydraulic disk breaks on this new bike but in the past I used rear rim breaks and mechanical disk front ones. Hydros are really nice but it doesn't really matter. They all do the job.

There are also some days on the road, especially when I stop for two or more days, where I get sort of jittery to get going again. But once mid day comes about Im all "go" and living the dream. I would ride to the train. It will give you the train ride to rest your legs and body before you tackle the west coast.

dude, how do you navigate!! how do you choose roads to take. I mean on google maps there's a bicycle emblem that indicates i guess routes or how long it takes. do you use this. just wondering? nice video, keep'em coming!!
I use google maps in both the cycling and drive modes comparing the options. I look at the satellite images to look for shoulders and ask locals for advice.

Great to follow you on another adventure. I saw your Co-Motion for sale. Can you share what you didn’t like about it? Why didn’t you start in the Keys?
Even though the Co-Motion is practically brand new it doesn't have much value relative to how much it cost me. I use it on flat ground around the neighborhood but not for training. When I do my training rides I use my Lynskey GR300, it's a far superior bike. If you read the comments from Season 3 (Episodes 1-6) you will get the whole scoop as to why I didn't care for the Co-Motion and its Pinion drivetrain. About my starting point, one of my goals is to document all 50 states (6 remain) and it made sense to start in Beaufort so I could ride thru Georgia and the rest of the states heading west that I haven't toured yet. I also have a late start leaving in August because I have to finish my guiding season into July here in the Florida Keys. To be able to reach the Rockies and Utah and climb the high mountain passes I don't have any time to spare so I can avoid the winter, maybe. As you will see I end up with plenty of 20F weather and even below that. Thank you for your question and for watching the channel.

Would love to see a list of the gear your hauling on your bike tour. Are you packing a cook set and food? Trying to keep my Surly bridge club and gear less then 100 lbs. With nothing loaded my bike weighs 42 lbs with the racks.
Hi Steve. My camping gear is listed in the description box of the episodes but not my clothes and cooking stuff. I keep as light as possible because I love to climb and weight does make a huge difference. My rig weights around 80 to 85 pounds depending on when and where Im going that given day or days. Carrying water is the biggest factor. My cooking is simple with a Ti pot and stove set up. The isobutane canister is what adds the weight so I wait till the last minute to get a replacing one. I carry food for two days at the most and it's all dehydrated goods for the most part, ramen, jerky, pasta packs, and sweets. My biggest issue is all the filming equipment with extra batteries, chargers, cables and such.
that is son cool you stayed in crawfordville ga. AH STEPHENS is one of my favorite state parks. I live in ga, just south of AH STEPHENS STATE PARK. I would have met up with you and shared some biking stories. Anyhow such a cool video!! Btw , what kind of touring bike are you using? And are your bags waterproof or your using rain covers. i just bought some pvc waterproof panniers, and i put them in da shower and tested them out.Turns out the zippers leak, but the main compartment was dry.
AH Stephens was great. I use a Lynskey GR300 and it's bad ass. This was my first tour with it and it proved to be all that and more. If you go to the description page of this first episode you will see I listed every component I used to build the bike from lights to wheels and even the combination of panniers I use. My go to panniers are Arkel, bomb proof and totally water tight. Their Orcas are top notch.

I used to Arkel panniers. The Dolphin 32 was for the hotter first half of this tour and the Orcas I used for the colder weather. I recommend them both and any products from Arkel, and Im not affiliated 🙂

hear from my wife and grown up kids when I suggest to them I am planning a long cycle trip. According to them there's someone waiting to murder me around every corner. So I compromise and set off on an adventure on my motorcycle instead. Still great fun though but I am sure that I miss many things as I speed past them. Great to see you new tour....do you plan out the whole tour and where your staying each night or do it the day before. I'm planning my Pacific coast tour in July and hoping to use warmshowers in towns that don't have hike/bike sites in the state parks. Will be riding my Surly Bridge Club 27.5 gravel bike 1x11 with 16 gear inches for climbing but I spin out on the flats and downhills. Thinking of going 2x or 3x to get more gear range.
You are going to love the west coast route. Likely the best experience touring in the country. About my planning, I don't hardly do any. I hate knowing too much of what's ahead of me so I keep the forwards info as I need to basis. The PCBR has so much camping options that you will likely not need Warmshowers that often. There are lots of folks who offer it though so it's there if you plan ahead for it. About your gearing, it sounds like you are all set up but hard to know form the info you are sharing. I use an 11-34 cassette with a 30/46t crank.

I rode a Lynskey GR300, best bike I've ever had. My camping gear list is in the description box of every episode as well as a list of the bike's components. The rest is filming equipment, clothes depending on weather, cooking pot and fuel canister, spare parts, water bottles, and food for two days at the most.

Do you have rim brakes or mechanical disc bakes ?
Hydraulic disk breaks on this new bike but in the past I used rear rim breaks and mechanical disk front ones. Hydros are really nice but it doesn't really matter. They all do the job.

great video. I did the TA in 2012 and did get the jitter thing going on, but after 1 day of "dealing" with the break in, never worried.
Hi Tim. Yeah those jitters are likely on everyone's minds. It's so silly because they go away so fast. There are also some days on the road, especially when I stop for two or more days, where I get sort of jittery to get going again. But once mid day comes about Im all "go" and living the dream. Yeah its the same with thru-hiking. My first thru hike PCT the jitters where thru the roof. As soon as I'd stop for a zero my body would be telling me "get going dude". great videos. keep em coming.
