They want to make tv content. We all watch youtube because we hate tv. Good job guys. What could go wrong?
Absolutely lol
Well said
@@WorldofMrGrey Dan , have you read the latest terms of service for google? There's actually a sentence in there that says the user is not allowed to use google services to make fake content. Check it out 👍
I haven't watched tv since the early 2010s. Why would I start paying for "tv quality shows" again.
Not only will I not follow them to thus service I unsubscribed from their youtube channel. This is the most boneheaded move I have seen a channel do in history. They not only misread their audience, they overestimated their own celebrity.
I mean... their argument is they want to make weekly tv shows. That is not what the faces were there for and isn't even really the model for modern media. Nor will a streaming service for one youtube channel ever be worth this money.
They could have simply moved offices. Ir dud what Scott the woz fies and release less episodes but at higher quality. They font need to make 50 gazillion tv quality shows - they can simply focus on a few shows at high quality.
i unfollowed them everywhere as well
I have seen this with a few channels - it is all about how much money they can make from people. Zero regard for the rising prices of food and basics that people HAVE to pay for, instead for them it is all about keep sending us money. Disgusting.
"They overestimated their celebrity"
This. Putting aside whether this was mean to their fans or not - they are getting viewers from their fans doing content and giving them content (ghost stories, videos, etc.) And publicity from being easily available on youtube. They won't have that if they lock themselves away on a third party website.
Agreed!!!
They have 25 full time employees working out of a Hollywood office and most of what they produce could be created using just them two, lapel mics and three cameras. Maybe throw in an editor for a good finish.
The only content that needs more than that is Ghost Files, but even then they don't need hair and makeup, they don't need a script writer, they don't need three cameras and a sound guy following them, they don't need to fly in 15 people.
Basically, they've got too big for their boots and instead of making the wise business decision to scale back and cut the fat during leaner times they're refusing to cut back on anything, they're planning to blow hundreds of thousands more on a show their audience doesn't want and doesn't need (Lim flying around to eat obscenely priced food) and as a result it's going to cost them everything.
Whoever made this decision has to be one of the DUMBEST people on the planet.
More than that, they have 25 employes, and yet they have to RENT crew for the ghost files episodes???
Who are the 25 employes??? Aren't they filming crews or what? Then they pretend they have to pay for the locations where they shoot the Ghost Files episode... you're gonna tell me the videos where the literal state of said location sponsored the video, they had to PAY for the location?? You gotta tell me that big tourist attractions would make them PAY? I don't buy that at all! Then they rent the studios where they film the part where they're sitting and talking, huh? Isn't that a set they built inside their own studios/office in Hollywood? How does that make sense? Even streamers on Twitch build to own their own streaming studio instead of RENTING it huh??
Their expanses don't make sense at all.
Yeah. I also just realized that they just hired two more employees who they used to do buzzfeed with implying that they’re gonna do the buzzfeed show “worth it” again but they don’t have the budget to pay for the expensive food to do that show. Then don’t do it! Only half of their audience would’ve watched it anyway. Ironically you could say that the cost of bringing back a show like that wouldn’t be “worth it” in the grand scheme of things. They’re being stubborn and doing what they want to rather than what their audience wants or rather than what’s best and makes sense for a company of their size. They wanna pretend like they’re bigger than they are and that’s fine. Of course it would be ideal for it to work but that is not the reality. This is the cost of their delusions.
@@MARYWTHERagreed about the not having a traveling film crew. Perhaps there are union issues and ways to find people who are nonunion to work on their shows at the locations. It doesn’t surprise me that they have to pay location fees. They are for the vast majority private property and not state owned, therefore incur and demand their own costs. Even state owned properties would need to be paid as that’s a separate budget and they’d need to pay for security, electricity access, etc. there’s no way getting around those costs I’m sure. That said I’m sure they get great sponsorship money from state tourism
@@sarahann74 less than half would watch worth it reboot😂
@@MARYWTHERsitting in the yard reading ghost stories dressed as Santa or Krampus in funny accents well no need to rent a space for that just take turns filming at your own houses or apartments etc
The worst part is that people are expected to pay for the CEO travelling the world eating the most expensive food money can buy. And no, Ryan and Shane won't be in it.
And no-one came for the ceo either...
If Steven Lim had his own separate thing no one would watch it, we are all here for Ryan & Shane…
Watcher is going to end up on one of the Buzzfeed lists of RUclips channels that went bust. It's such a shame that they have hugely misjudged this step. It's one way to commit business suicide I suppose.
Funny thing being - buzzfeed used to also run their stuff on Amazon prime. Which I am sure provided revenue to do. So watcher could have remained on yourube and did that - sold it for ad free to netflux or Amazon.. yet now they want their own channel - and BTW they still have their patreon.
Mr grey you are the shit mr grey, i love you brox, go gettem ginger 🐻 beard .......🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉ginger beard ginger beard
They have already backpedaled and said that they are changing it to the videos being released a month early on the watcher streaming service then being released on RUclips
@@azrealofhades2603 I don't trust them enough anymore to not backpedal on that as well. I unsubscribed and I will remain unsubscribed.
Shaniac here. Big skeptic. I LOVED their stuff. They got me through some really tough times. Their content gave me something to look forward to when I felt I didn’t have anything else to look forward to. (Much better now, but those people stay in your heart even after you’re better, y’know?)
I unsubscribed. Even if I had the $6 to spend, I wouldn’t just on principle. Someone in the YT comments put it best: “I’d downsize my business model before I downsized my fans.”
Also, I subbed to you. A skeptic’s dream right here 😂
Glad I found you :)
Everyone that I know is downsizing how many streaming services they use not have 20+ streaming services, bad move my dudes.
I really like Shane and Ryan. Their content was great. I can't afford to pay every service under the sun to watch content. This really will bite them in the ass lol.
People cut the cable to cut cost and just get Netflix. Then Prime came along, then Disney, HBO Max, Hulu, ESPN etc! At this point, just bring the cable back!
I used to just share accounts with my TTRPG group, until the services started clamping down on it. Good while it lasted, we all got to watch the new thing while only paying one subscription each.
They spit in the face of the old fans and how on earth are new fans ever going to find them if they can only be found on their own website behind a paywall? This is such a mind blowingly stupid decision on their part...
It's dumb when content creators do this. I guess new ppl could see there older content, do some digging n go to new platform but I certainly see wut ur saying-just dumb n super greedy. I think they're overestimating how much their audience likes their made for TV content.
It is so so hard to funnel people to a third party platform! I struggle with getting traffic to my small biz website, so I keep Etsy around too. This is such a bad choice of them!
They basically want their fans to be their investors on upcoming programs, but those fans are expected to invest without knowing if it’ll be good at all. And a lot of us have notice the drop in quality from the Unsolved videos.
How long before they have to put ads on their new site and they're back in the same situation having to please advertisers? Although this time they'll have a fraction of the audience.
Yeah, just like Amazon did recently. I predict every streaming service will eventually show ads. The exact same model as the old cable TV, but over internet. Pay to access the channels, then watch ads too.
Life is a nightmare. A cyclical, cynical nightmare. @@SamBorgman
@@SamBorgmanits impossible to avoid it its like free money the streaming services are turning down by not having ads
I unsubbed from channel and my patron and what I was paying is 7.50 a month more then the stupid streaming . I won’t help pay for Steve to eat 2000$ pizza and golden caviar they turned in to buzzfeed and instead of down sizing too just the 2 of them
Bad decision.
They are millionaires as a result of their hard work, if they want to expand, then reinvest their money. Don’t expect the fans to fund it.
I’ll miss The Professor 💙
I'm devastated to learn The Professor is a class traitor.
I loved Puppet History.
@@Mistahhuntah it's not the Professor's fault. it's Steven, Ryan, and Shane's.

But hiding in the clouds will never help anyone.
I hope they will learn by their mistakes, if this can even be fixed somehow 🙈
watcher describing their content as "tv level quality" is crazy
I can't help but draw parallels between "6.99$ isn't a lot" and Blizzards whole "Yall got phones right?" speech lol. After seeing Penguinz0's video, it's very clear that this move is just an act of pure greed and complete disregard for the fans who brought them to this point. "OooO It's expensive to make these episodes" - You didn't have to increase the production quality so much, Ghost Files could have literally just been a copy paste of the BuzzFeed Unsolved format and people would have still loved it. Like you said, people aren't there to watch the fancy set designs and quality effects, people are there to watch the Ghoul Boys explore cool places.
Oh i remember the blizzard conference. Some people just don't lead real lives lol
🤦🏻♀🤦🏻♀THIS is what greed looks like in my humble opinion. Best of luck to them.
I blame one of the three. Mr. Lim needs to go.
@@TheWindcrow agreed!
i think it would’ve been genius if they made it 50¢ cents a month. none of us would miss that money
and then all the money from each subscriber would be over a million dollars
In a world where Disney and Hulu joined streaming services, why would you start a NEW streaming service?! I will miss you guys, bye.
Not to mention, even the monopoly mouse Disney is hemorrhaging money on their streaming service... I don't know how they missed this.
Good point about Shane and Ryan being equally responsible for this, Dan. I also disliked the video which is something I do extremely rarely.
"$6.99 isn't that much". Yeah, $6.99 here, $5.99 there, $8.99 to another one, pay for something like an Amazon subscription and then shell out extra for content that's behind another paywall... it adds up. We're being nickel 'n dimed everywhere. The problem with those who do this is that they have a myopic view of things. They think that all anyone is interested in is them and, therefore, should be happy to get that content for *only* $6.99. Fare well to Watcher I guess.
Yeah everyone I know is struggling to pay bills and have already cut down on anything they consider a 'luxury' and I'm sorry but any streaming service is kind of a luxury.
If I can pay 8.99 for amazon prime and watch movies and TV shows in all genres... I'm not paying 6.99 for 1 show... Even if they grow their channel to be like buzz feed I only watched watcher.. ❤
Reminds me of the attitude the teaching board has towards homework. Oh we only give your child one hour of homework. Uh yeah, PER SUBJECT. If a kid has five subjects in one day that's five hours of homework. Add on any after-school clubs, commuting time, etc. The governing section of the world has no idea how little money and time normal people have.
That's why I pirate everything I watch I only pay for RUclips premium so the creators I watch still get ad revenue and it means I can watch on my xbox while I paint instead of the ass ache of using my phone
@@KyleRDent and the homework and teaching is low quality and pushes agendas
They also basically said eff you to us international fans. Didn't account for currency conversion at all. I'll better donate that money to AFU, as a Ukrainian.
Yeah, they're gonna regret this decision. Sooooooo many reasons that this will fail. It makes me sad as well because I've been with them since Buzzfeed too. What a bummer.
“We can’t afford to make the videos we want to make” they mean like Stevens “eating a $2000 pizza” when absolutely no one is watching that specific channel for videos like that
100% they could go it alone with ZERO budget and Watcher would be left in the dust.
Be interesting to see if they cancel their UK Ghost Files live shows this week, if not the Q&A will be very interesting!
I'm completely disappointed in the team, after watching Charlie (Penguinz0) and his breakdown on what he estimates their income is, there is absolutely no reason to dump their fans in the way they have.
Apparently their Patreon is angry (more than youtube viewers) and is haemorrhaging subs. Even if they dial it back and reconsider their decision, they've lost trust and respect. They have completely fucked themselves silly.
Oh my gosh I hope someone records the live, if it’s allowed.
I can only imagine what the Discord looks like right now. I wish someone would leak those chats lmao
I can see why they'd want time to put together a statement but I really want to know what they have to say about all of this.
@@foxesofautumn I think they said it all in the video, words to the effect of ‘we hope you’ll follow us but if not, thanks and goodbye’ I honestly don’t think they will respond online until the money isn’t there to support their endeavour. It’ll be interesting to see if they properly address any questions at the live shows, I’m guessing it’ll be some twaddle about RUclips not supporting their trajectory in the artistic direction they wish to continue in and that the streaming site will allow them to produce better content and it’s all for the ‘fans’🙄
The Patreon members should have been given an annual subscription at no extra cost right away. 😬 I don’t blame them for being mad, they aren’t getting what they paid for anymore.
Watcher was one of my absolute favourite channels, and I watched at least 5-6 of their different shows, sucks to be losing access to ghost files, mystery files, puppet history, are you scared and too many spirits. Bad decision from them, I really hope they backpedal and fast
I don't condone Steven Lim being blamed as the sole cause of this. I've seen so many people hating on him alone, excluding Shane and Ryan from the mix as if they weren't involved in this.
They were. If they weren't, that video would never have been made. The site would never have been created and this whole ordeal would have a completely different complexion. watcher entertainment as a collective entity have decided to take this step. And we can all see it for what it is...
It's happened time and again on this platform, and it won't stop after them.
Totally agree, love the goul boys, but this would never have gone forward unless they say yes to it.
Creating a new streaming service in this day and age is a truly daft idea, the market is so crowded that they will no doubt disappear and end up back on youtube.
I have literally been saving up to buy one of their dumb 80 dollar hoodies because I wanted to materially support them and publicly show my love for them as a fan. Now I’m glad I didn’t buy it because Id have ended up with a physical reminder in my wardrobe of how they only view their fans as wallets. I am genuinely so floored and disappointed.
Penguinz0 had a great response to all of that drama.
There are far too many platforms now. There's a cost of living crisis ffs. I bet the advertisers want more sensational stuff to get more viewers.
I really believe that one or all of the guys got a huge front from investors, didn't see a sufficient ROI, and the investors told them to make this move. It has strong Quibi vibes.
I was thinking this as well. Or maybe some other youtubers had said they may join if it goes well or something.
This just seems like an obviously bad move at face value.
They're saying they'll put up the first episode of each new season on YT but you have to pay for their website subscription if you want to see any more.
Plus, their radio silence since the backlash has not gone unnoticed by their fanbase either. Nobody is very impressed.
I only watched Ghost Files and sometimes Puppet History, but always enjoyed them, and yep i followed them from Buzzfeed.
No way i can afford the AUD$ conversion to their website, so im also very unimpressed and its goodbye to them from me too, ugh.
I get what they're talking about and why they want to do what they're doing but this never ends well.
Ryan also mentioned wanting "a certain level of quality" but buzzfeed unsolved had a few slideshows, title cards, etc. and it was fantastic.
"I struggle every month to pay that rent."
I feel ya. The rent was a major issue for me a while back. Now I have my own place and it's a big relief. But even now I have to balance my budget with the-things-I-need + the-things-I-want + future-savings-retirement etc. There's not a lot in that "things I want" category with cost of living being so high.
Right? And they don't need a fancy set for their recaps and such. They literally could just sit down on a couch like they did here and talk and we'd like it. Also I was laughing about the 'level of quality' from a bunch of guys who literally had a whole series where they sat outside by a firepit in lawn chairs getting drunk and reading stuff other people created.
The thing is if the REALLY wanted to do a streaming service there’s a way to do it that wouldn’t destroy everything they’ve built.
The Sidemen for example have one however it is 100% optional. You’re paying for extended videos, behind the scenes, podcasts and they still make consistent content over like three or four different RUclips channels and some still upload individually too.
This is nothing more than a cash grab without a seconds consideration for the people who will now miss out completely and not just in some bonus content 😔
Absolutely 100% agree with you, Dan. I, too, am gutted. One golden rule of RUclips: don't sh1t on your fans. Does it really need 26(!) crew to get a video out?! I really hope it bites them in the a55 (and I don't mean the North Wales Expressway) and they come crawling back.
Hmm! I think making people feel stupid for supporting you is the worst move you can make if you're relying on goodwill to fund your business.
I will say, even though they're leaving and I'm pissed about it for the same reason everyone else is, they've stimulated the RUclips economy because I've subscribed to 5 new channels including this one, because of their absolutely spot on take of this situation.
Well said. I also don't buy their line about how they're having to make content for two audiences, their viewers and advertisers. That's not how it works when your channel is as big as theirs. I can assure you they have no trouble whatsoever getting advertisers, even with their slightly more risque jokes from time to time.
I also don't believe they *need* to spend several hundred thousand dollars every month to make their content. They've made the same mistake we're seeing in many video game companies right now: they're bloated. They've hired far more people than they need, and it looks like they're also producing too many shows nobody really cares about. They need to swallow their pride, cut down on their expenses, and realize it's not up to the general public to pay for Watcher's lack of fiscal responsibility.
I used to watch their stuff, but like everyone else, I'm done with them. I cannot afford yet another streaming service, and even if I could, that money would be far better spent elsewhere. Horrible move on their part.
Have you seen their Houses? We are talking about mansions here
Yep. They shot themselves in the foot and their community. As others are saying, we've all got enough to pay for as is, and sorry but six episodes a year of Ghost Files - which has stagnated in quality, IMO - isn't worth it. Bad move and I've lost a lot of respect for them.
These moves are always about money. Making the show better is just an excuse. In a capitalist world every business want an ever increasing profit margin. When the increase slows down they do things like this. The fact that they will even remove the videos from RUclips says it all.
They can count me out. 5.99 isn’t much but add that to what I pay for my other streaming services that give me more content and more choices, no thanks. I’m out. Good luck to them on their new journey.
They haven’t done their research if they think a streaming service is the answer, streaming services are dying on their arses
I know right? Even Disney+ is struggling. If DISNEY can't make money out of something what hope have these guys got?
Just wondering how mad they are that they have to put it on RUclips. The smack talks about ads and RUclips.
I loved the Shane’s puppet character, the Professor on Watcher’s Puppet University. I guess I’m out. I’ll miss them. It’s just greed. Why don’t they get a cable show?
Because nobody watches tv
When they broke away from being under control of Buzz Feed, everyone was excited about it and they grew a fan base very quickly. I think distroying what they already have to go on their own platform may not a wise move. If money is a issue, i would keep what actually did work which is youtube and stream other content on the other platform to make up for the shortfall in money. If they are having trouble making a profit, maybe they could cut production cost in a few places where it still keeps up good production value. Without fans, you have nothing when it comes to making content, and if you disrespect their support like they are actually doing, their who business model could fall apart very quickly. IF certain mistakes are made and you throw the fans under the bus, its usually very difficult to recover from that.
If its costing them a couple of 100,000 per episode that's mental .
I believe they implied by the end of the season, not per episode
If that's the case that's more reason for them not to do this. I think they would have enough money if they could cut down on the content with fewer views.
Found your channel because I was looking for a video on watcher to show my husband, since I've unsubscribed to them cause of this ridiculousness I'm glad to have found a new channel to follow
Appreciated, glad you could stop by and hope you enjoy :)
Same here!
If they move to a paid platform for higher “production value” then they’re going to have to start “producing” paranormal events/evidence so subscribers get what they pay for.
Probably.
Sad.
I’m bummed. i pay huge money for ad free youtube. it IS a streaming service. no way i’m paying for ghost files as much as i enjoy it. maybe i’m sign up for one month next year, binge watch everything-then cancel
6.99 is too much for one show, I spend my fun tickets very carefully, I have to. They want the high production value so don’t make us pay for it. I was honestly heartbroken 💔 Love these two, but I can’t afford the subscription. I could if I gave up 3 RUclips memberships and I’m sorry but I’m not. So good bye Shane and Ryan I am sorry but we must part.😢
i think it would’ve been genius if they made it 50¢ cents a month. none of us would miss that money

They are basically asking the fans to fund their hobbies lol
I only watched for shane and ryan, I'll just rewatch buzzfeed unsolved 😂
I'm so sad about this. :( Watcher was one of my fav channels, and I've been watching them since the beginning, but I can't afford to pay yet another subscription service. Like if they needed more money to keep the show up and running, do some live streams, and put up more members only material. Make fancier merch. Hell, do some paid meet and greets.
You can't tell me that the platform that made Good Mythical Morning and Mr.Beast can't support their costs per episode.
Oh, and I have an addon for my browser that shows dislikes still: 35k likes, 191k dislikes.
I am only staying subbed to them to see the outcome of this.

it's honestly completely mind blowing to me. they have (had) 3m subs and are taking their content off platform when Rooster Teeth did this with 45m subs and bombed it so bad they had to declare bankruptcy! wild af business decision which i truly hope they go back on.
Good Sunday morning Dan These guys just took a page from the Paranormies: Drain all the $$ you can from your fans on Yt Next put things behind a pay wall and finally start a new subscription service It's just another shameless cash grab Good riddens 🧐🤘✌️
my 2 cents is that they should have just bought a property to set up their studio instead of leasing the spaces.
Dan, Steven Lim's "Dish Granted" is his show where he recreates a guests favourite dish or makes a fantasy dish come true. Usually incredibly expensive. He made a simple dish like a milkshake or pancakes or mac & cheese, something simple like that that cost $1200. And that was around 2021 before the world was back to normal.
And he is not entertaining, his own channel was proof of that, but he is their friend. Mixing business and personal life does not always end well.
I think worth a shot is a better version of Dish granted, because A.) The requests are really silly, making this more of a challenge instead of bragging about how much money was spent to make it,
B.) Ricky, the guy making the drinks, is competent at making them, and
C.) HE'S ACTUALLY GOT A PERSONALITY THAT BOUNCES OFF OF OTHERS.
Didn't Buzzfeed go out of business? They were a slightly entertaining, tiny piece of a crap brand.
Their website is still up but it's very sad and all their good talent left.
Watcher got way too much production very early on and it made me not watch anymore, they used to go with a couple of cameras and a few extra people that were already too many to some places and look for ghosts, and that was good stuff, 100k for a single episode?? I could give less of a fuck about some fancy backdrop and people flying around. It's youtube, keep it simple and personal, that's what the fuck we want, not another netflix tv production with 90% b-roll and 10% actual entertainment.
Worst decision ever
Watcher 2022: eat the rich!
Watcher 2024: let them eat cake
I would prefer them having ads sector than going preimum
I am gonna do my own video on this as well, its an incredibly stupid decision, I loved these guys, but this is just pure greed, its pure insanity, they have killed there brand and their channel in a 14 min video, keep up the great work Mr Grey, I loved these guys as well. Followed Shane and Ryan since Buzzfeed. Feels like a gut punch tbh. The time I watched this, they had 188k dislikes
How dare you make me cry by reminding me of RVB. What a once-fantastic franchise.
This makes me sad because I liked a lot of the Watcher shows (not love, but liked--not enough to go to an all new streaming service that will autopay themselves regardless of any content they put out or what I watch). It seems to me that they could have learned some of the stuff themselves? People don't realize people liked Watcher for the PERSONALITIES. We didn't necessarily need the 'high production value' The puppet theater animations could have been MS paint and clip art and we would still have enjoyed it for the fun personalities and the story.
It’s greed, plain and simple, and it’s the the start of their downfall. I hope it’s worth it. They’re going to lose everything they worked so hard for…if they haven’t already from the stupid shit they said in their video. I know I'm done supporting them.
Has everyone forgotten that these two ripped the Parapod off in the first place?
Did they? Interesting! I loved Parapod... Seriously underrated imho :(
@@FoxyRed67 100%. There’s an episode of the Parapod that mentions two Americans were pinching their idea and not crediting them. The Parapod was the first paranormal podcast that featured a believer and a sceptic and focused on the dynamic between the two. I loved Buzzfeed Unsolved but it always seemed like they should have paid their respects to The Parapod.
Wow, that's not good.. As mentioned, I really feel.parapod was extremely underated. Such a,shame!
@@Mark418 That's hardly a unique concept, unless there's more there I'd hardly call it a rip off
A common thing with large RUclipsrs and channels is that after a while they forget why they are popular in the first place. They completely lose touch with their audience to the point they are just seen as numbers on RUclips statistic charts that bring in the cash each month. You can always tell when this happens because they stop interacting with their viewers in the comments. That's why I always like the RUclipsrs that take the time to reply to at least a few comments.
I don't know if this channel does it because I don't watch them but just clicking on a few of their videos it seems not. Slapped Ham has more subs than them and someone at that channel at least takes the time to write a few replies on every video.
What they are doing is effectively giving everyone that helped them reached that point by watching their videos and supporting them the two fingers. There's nothing wrong with them wanting to aim higher than RUclips but they should have just downsized their RUclips output instead of stopping it completely.
People don't forget they go to a lot of amusement parks as well. Not just fancy dinner.
There's already things like Nebula. They needed to have partnered with them to put specific things in it instead.
Sink or swim. Their channel, their money, their decision.
Agree. If they are willing to risk it all, it's up to them. If they succeed, good on em, if not, they are responsible for the consequences. The joys of liberty👍
I watched them religiously, I guess that is in the past. I can't afford $6 a month for one channel. I agree with everything Mr Grey has said.
I think we all did the same think, we checked what programs were getting the views and it is only ghost files and mystery files. Why would you nuke your careers on the strength of 2 programs? Fans are not going to pay for 2 programs?!
They also have the audacity to run ads on the very video where they say that their RUclips audience's views aren't good enough for them anymore, so "give us money or get out". They've got Marvel Phase 4 & 5 level trash of all flash and no actually quality, as even Ghost Files Season 2 isn't as good as Season 1, and going back to rewatch their old BuzzFeed content, the only real worthwhile update is some of the new equipment. Plenty of people would have been just as happy with blue and yellow text on a black background like before with a lot of the rest. But I stopped watching the MCU after Avengers: Infinity War. Losing Ghost Files and Mystery Files isn't going to be a difficult move - I've already unsubbed and unfollowed everywhere. There's an open market for anyone on YT to fill now, and someone will no doubt end up with the next big ghost hunting and unsolved mysteries shows.
lol imagine watching buzzfeed unironically
They said they would be uploading the first video of each season to youtube... So basically an advertisement of all of the things youtube viewers have had taken away during (in thr UK) a cost of living crisis!
Watched them from the Buzzfeed days, and joined their Patreon when they started Watcher. They have misread the room massively. I cancelled Patreon and subscribed to the new, but I fear they are doomed. I hope they see sense
With you subbing to the new website, youre enabling their delusion.
@@strongerthaneverph True… but I’m not willing to dump them over a bad business decision. I was a $10 Patreon, so it’s cheaper option to sub to the new stream. I’m giving them less money than before and nervously waiting to see what happens.
Too big for their britches.
It’s really sad when you discover people, who you thought were down to earth, let fame and fortune go to their heads. I’m talking more about Shane and Ryan than Steven. He always struck me as being full of himself, even though he rode on Shane and Ryan’s coattails, to get where he is.
If Social Blade is correct, they're down 90,000 subscribers since Friday. 😮
Thanks to Watcher drama, I have now discovered you, MrGrey - I love your humor, cadence, and your down-to-earth commentary. I have subscribed and I look forward to enjoying more of your videos in the future! Good luck with the life grind, its a dance for sure.
And if you like bingo, he does a livestream called paranormal bingo bollocks that he does on Wednesdays.
Whilst I do think its fair they get paid for their efforts, this is not the way to go about it!
What has really turned me off from them was the "anybody and everyone can afford it" line. Just makes them seem so out of touch with their audience.
The non ghost files are getting 200k to 500k views but how long are people watching those is the question. Just skimming them for a couple of minutes then moving on to something else. Then compare it with the ghost files.
Prediction: 5 months to a year later back on youtube
See the thing is if they were REALLY worried about creativity restrictions they cudve jumped onto nebula like a few other creators like philosophy tube . Ppl might’ve been a bit more keen
Shouldn't the contest make itself if it's legitimate? Just a thought
it would’ve been Genius if they announced the subscription at $1 a month.
it’s worth $1 a month since netflix has hundreds of shows and they only have 20-30
and most people would agree to $1 a month
their younger fans can afford $1 a month
they could’ve had $2.8 million dollars a month from each subscriber
or even better 50¢ cents a month!
we’d easily pay 50¢ a month without even thinking about it. they were asking 3 MILLION PEOPLE
they should’ve made it appealing to us. 50¢ a month would’ve been AMAZING
idiots
but they got greedy and delusional
Bit controversial, but I do feel RUclips tends hold creators 'hostage', so, if they want to breakaway, that's on them . I loved them on buzzfeed, the paranormal episodes were amongst my favourite. But... Hey ho.
Totally understand about people wanting to breakaway from youtube. But at the same time they have to remember how they got there in the first place, and maybe handled things differently? I dont know.
True, however, it is us, the consumer, who chooses who we support and how, tbh, we don't 'own them' we patronise them because we enjoy it. Tough one for sure
The channel stays, they say it will have the trailers and season premiers.
Great vid. Thanks for explaining. Was a watcher of Watcher but not now.
Wait, what?? I'm shocked!! Limewire still existed in 2008??
Remember you're where you are becase of the fans. You and only you got yourselves into to this pickle.don't ask your fans to literally pay for your mistakes.
Even better news, I just ordered a Tee from your mech page!!! I remember these guys, watched a few of their episodes. C’est La Vie
Oh cheers steve, much appreciated :)
Pretty sure Mr. Beast's production value is way higher, especially since he just gives away money, so how does Watcher need more money??
What about the people watching for free in the developing world who now would be charged for their content?! How do you tell them your content is worth possibly a weeks or a months salary depending on where they live! It’s disgusting!!
I'm gonna see where this goes, but just in case they pull some bullshit and pull watcher down even though they said they weren't, I'm archiving just in case someone wants to make a video in the future about the downfall of watcher lol.
"TV quality" means something different now adays, and it's nothing good
Such a shame. They were always great . As you say should have stuck to Ghost files and mystery files , maybe too many spirits too. The rest could have been binned !
Nah, not puppet history! That deserved its place if just as an outlet for Shane’s lyrical mastery. I loved the little blue guy.
But yeah, bin the rest 🚮
Are you scared and weird wonderful world get a pass for me, because Those reminded me of classic Ryan and Shane, just two friedns hanging out and talking shit Worth A shot could have also stayed because I feel Ricky had better personality and presence than a certain other host. Pretty historical is the most eh for me, because while the show has potential, Selorm gotta do better with her research, because the factoids she would give out would be claims that got debunked several times over. Like most of the shows were okay or mid, but could have been better, and they could have cut those until they got better footing and giving hosts time to work on it. But Steven's shows were the ones I easily fell off of, so those could absolutely go in the bin.
@@growingsageactually, I agree on worth a shot. I like Ricky.
IIRC in the video they stated that they would be putting previews on the RUclips channel, and "season premieres" with the rest of the season behind the paywall.
I don't know if I was reading too much into it, but I felt like Shane seemed the least enthusiastic in the goodbye video. They showed him talking the least, and in the brief clip they did show he wasn't even coherent. He started to try and say that RUclips hinders what they do, brought up the trending page, only to immediately contradict what he was saying by stating that they had been on trending on more than one occasion.
Also, when Steven said they were making it a price that "everyone can afford" Shane was in the shot and he pulled a face at the phrasing.
Ryan seemed to be more behind it, although he **could** have been acting. The one thing that did stand out to me with what Ryan said, was he was talking about the expenses of the most popular shows.
Some of the other more popular shows (which all predominantly feature Ryan and Shane) I can't imagine having anything like that kind of budget. I watched a few episodes of Too Many Spirits, which was just them getting drunk while sharing spooky stories that were submitted by the audience.
I didn't get into Are You Scared? But again, that was just Ryan and Shane telling "scary" stories.
I actually love Puppet History. I've noticed the production values for Puppet History increase since the beginning, and although I can't imagine it being hugely expensive to produce compared to some of the other shows, it was often funnier and more charming the lower budget it was.
In the goodbye video they revealed that Steven had reunited with his old BuzzFeed colleagues from a show called Worth It, to make "it's successor" like how BuzzFeed Unsolved had it's successors on Watcher already.
This was something that never appealed to me, but IIRC was trying really overpriced food, I think I remember thumbnails comparing say, $10 chicken wings to $500 ones. The food was often so expensive because it was covered in edible gold leaf.
This was the only "new" show that was being plugged. The budget for this new show, the name of which I already forgot, must've been huge. They showed Ryan talking about the budget for the most popular show but I would put money on the budget for the new show dwarfing that.
That's why Steven is getting such an enormous amount of the backlash. He's the CEO, he said that the price was one everyone can afford, his shows are the least popular on the channel by far, and the only new show they've got to launch the subscription service with is a relaunch of his old show from BuzzFeed that revolved around eating extremely expensive food.
Another couple of things I think are interesting to add:
I've seen that apparently Ryan and Shane are on a tour right now. I'm British, and I saw comments saying that they had shows in Glasgow, and London. I've not checked the dates but it seemed like this tour was currently underway. This would make the fallout from the backlash even more complicated.
I've also seen a lot of discussions about how they should have made cut backs in the budgets, and the size of the team, if they were struggling to finance everything.
But I don't think this is even the case necessarily. They had the Patreon, ad money, merchandise ($80 hoodies?!), Ryan and Shane doing a tour, and other possibilities for revenue.
I've seen a couple of people say that they were offering channel memberships right up until the announcement dropping, including annual memberships. I've seen people say that patrons were offered a 40% discount for the new streaming service, that the extra content on the Patreon had been more diverse but it was just a podcast now.
I can't remember if they took sponsorships off the top of my head. But that can be thousands per video.
They could have pushed the Patreon more. If them having channel memberships was true they could've pushed that more. There's services like Nebula which is a streaming service where multiple creators upload exclusive content. Other channels have their own services where they have additional content. But they still keep their RUclips going.
By stopping putting stuff on RUclips, how are they going to attract new people as fans? The first episode of a season isn't going to be good enough.
This is a clear, enormous mistake, and at the moment it looks like the driving force behind it is the CEO getting to have a show where he eats expensive food, after being so out of touch as to suggest "everyone" can afford the new streaming service in the first place.
Obviously there's stuff we're not seeing behind the scenes. But it makes no sense to do this when they definitely would have been able to fund *at least* their most popular shows profitably.
Edit -
Checked the tour dates. They're in London on the 23rd, and 24th. They're in Glasgow on the 25th.
I wonder if they're going to say anything at the tour, or if they even can.
But it will make putting out an apology in the next few days very difficult to almost impossible. At least with the three of them together.
Be interesting to hear what comes out of the tour.
Regarding 14:05, at the time of writing this the likes are 35k and the dislikes 190k, i reckon they got the message, not to mention the backlash in comments on yt and patreon.
Mystery Files, Ghost Files, Puppet History, Too Many Spirits and Are You Scared where the shows I watched. Everything else was filler.
“Their subscription service is obviously going to have Ghost Files, Mystery Files and stuff this guy’s in (circles Steven)” 😂
