    I've put Linux Mint on a couple of old Samsung Intel Atom Netbooks that don't support 64 bit operating systems but as you discovered they are not brilliant for video play back, but fine for the simple tasks in a compact machine.
    Thanks for sorting out the audio at the end!

      I think if it was a later dual core with 4 threads it might give passable playback but these 1st gen Atoms are not good!
      Thanks for letting me know!

      Thank you! Yes much better thanks. Linux Mint is excellent! I could see this going back on the P11Z once I'm done with it!

    Audacity always transcodes stuff for cache so it doesn't matter what bitrate was the original, it would always play it correct speed.

    You can not use the memory usage in Windows for much, Windows grabs as much of the memory to preload apps. Not sure how to see the real memory usage though

    • @HandheldComputing

      Its true, and the prefetch can help things run better but on a 2GB system you run out of RAM a little too fast in Win10 and end up with a pagefile bottle neck making the system hang 😒

    I have a small collection of early 2000s VAIO laptops and I've often thought to add a P-series to the set. However, it seems that the P-series is trapped between under powered hardware and the weight of relatively recent operating systems. Linux seems a good way to go but a big part of the appeal of VAIOs is the custom Sony VAIO software that was included, especially in the earlier models. I might add one to my collection someday but until then I'll just enjoy others' retro computing adventures with the VAIO P-series.

    • @HandheldComputing
      @HandheldComputing  Год назад +1

      I think if they had put a centrino core 2 in the P-series with a different GMA it would be a lot more useable. The early Atom CPUs just didn't live upto the hype and as for the GMA500....
      Its a shame really as I think it was part of the reason Sony left the ultraportable market and they were generally making good products!

    • @HandheldComputing

      What an excellent idea! Yes I can, the series 5 is very limited as there's no wifi option and when it comes to email there are issues there due to security featured added later - I will look at making this in Jan/Feb

    Omg quite an improvement over Win 10, just watched your old video. There is a lot of bloatware in Windows, Tiny10 should do good also. I think the problem is that WIn 10 by default just uses too much ram and you end up hd swapping right?

    • @HandheldComputing
      @HandheldComputing  Год назад

      Mint is a huge improvement. Yes I think tiny10 might be similar as all that bloat will be gone from Windows I defo wan to avoid a swapfile bottle neck if I can!

    • @another3997
      @another3997 Год назад

      A lot depends on the apps that you run, whether on Windows or linux or any other OS. Big, memory hungry apps will slow your computer down once they use the available RAM. You can easily adjust settings in Windows to use less resources, and Win 10 requires surprisingly little RAM to run... but apps and unnessesary backgorund services can really slow things down. Linux is a minefield of inconsistent distros, window managers and software repositories. There should be very little need for a modern OS to use the command line interface or edit config files, but Linux didn't get that memo. 😂

    Unfortunately, firefox is the worst choice for week systems. Try with some of the chromium- based browsers, im using sRware Iron myself. YT runs fine at 360p (Asus 1005PE - atom n450, GMA 3150, 2GB). Thats on MInt xfce x64 (because, as said, some software is not available in 32bit version anymore). Some other stuff that im using: Double Commander, Libre Office, gedit, qpdfView, Visual Studio Code, MonoDevelop, CPU-G, XnView MP.

      Hi @fradd182 thank you for the heads up, I will try sRware Iron and see how it performs and if I get a bit of time I will check out your other suggestions before trying tiny10 - I have to say I have been impressed with Mint on the P11Z so it might end up going back on once I'm done with it!

    • @HandheldComputing

      So it is working, when I looked back through the forums I found that drivers for the GMA500 had been added to the kernel. However there are no good drivers for the GMA500, it isn't an intel design so even intel struggled to create good drivers due to the secretive nature of chip design. Sorry, if you do get it working let me know 😉

    Try Lubuntu 18.0.4 it works faster about 170mb ram idle.
