    oh man the Neville omission was such a crime! I mean there was so much content in the books that something inevitability was going to be cut out, but that was such a crucial aspect of Neville's character development in the book. When Neville finds out that Bellatrix is out of prison in the books it's like the complete turning point for Neville, he basically becomes the badass of the series from that point on making rapid progress in in the DA lessons and becoming the leader of DA by the 7th book. Maybe it's just that Neville was such a superior character that he would have overshadowed Harry to some extent, but they did his character development a disservice in this movie

    • @Dreadjaws
      @Dreadjaws 8 лет назад +40

      Specially considering Neville's actual importance to the plot (namely, that all it would have taken would have been a mental coin toss from Voldemort for _him_ to be the actual protagonist of the story).

    • @proballa27
      @proballa27 8 лет назад +10

      exactly, and I think that plot point was what the movies were trying to avoid, because it kinda diminishes the whole "chosen one" angle of Harry if there's another character with the exact same qualities.

    In my not-so-humble- opinion, Goblet of Fire was the crux, the lynchpin of the series- specifically in the graveyard. When Harry makes the choice to get up from behind where he was crouched, and decides to face Voldemort head-on, that is THE MOMENT in the whole series. Everything hangs on his decision to get up and fight.
    And I love that moment. That's where I burst into tears- book and movie both.

      It's when things changed, the series became less about the fun and whimsy of this magical world, and more about stopping a terrible evil, becoming more action oriented. I honestly love the change, as the first three movies feel completely different from the others, but it still fits within the context of the story. It's rather genius.

    I wish they would have included the Weasley's picking up Harry from the Dursley's in the movie. That was probably the funniest moment in the book. Arthur blasting his way out of the boarded up fireplace and the Dursley family all in their nicest suits covered in dust. And Uncle Vernon throwing things at Arthur. And Petunia yanking on Dudley's giant tongue after his fat ass ate that candy Fred dropped. So damn funny.

  • @spacewaifuu
    @spacewaifuu 8 лет назад +135

    Man the movies were so unrespectful to Sirius and his relationship with Harry, he´s actually so much more present and supportive, it makes you feel the family love Harry never had. And you missed Harry´s grief after Sirius dies, the long talk they had in Albus´s office a whole morning and in between all the things from the office Harry destroyed in a rage attack he had while struggling with realising Sirius was death and Albus being alright with Harry tearing apart his precious objects. It was very harsh on the book. In the movie is not like that at all. Also as a fun thing that Gilderoy Lockhart appears on the Mental Asylum when visting Neville parents, and he´s out of his mind af.

    • @nahor88
      @nahor88 5 лет назад +11

      Movies 4 and 5 are the absolute WORST in the series, while books 4 and 5 are the best for that exact reason. There was very little to no fan service left in the 4th and 5th movies. A mind boggling decision seeing as how the main demographic watching the movies would be PEOPLE WHO HAVE READ THE BOOKS.
      Radcliffe supposedly was drunk in many scenes he did... why not go ahead and let him loose destroying Dumbledore's office?

    • @christopherrussell2926

      The 4 book moments from Year 4 that I missed the most was: *1)* The Dursleys. *2)* The actual Quidditch World Cup match. *3)* Barty Crouch Jr.'s explanation of how he escaped Azkaban with his mother's help, and *4)* Those 3 words that should have capped Albus' eulogy: "Remember Cedric Diggory", which could have EASILY been added in AR as the camera panned up to the Great Hall ceiling. Anyway.... everyone has their opinions, but for me, those were the moments.

      After having his mind changed completely by Ron's broken wand, it was clear that using a broken wand was more dangerous than borrowing another person's wand, because the wand would change loyalty if you overpowered the other wizard, Ron got lucky when he only got sick trying to use the wand, he could have been mentally handicapped the rest of his life, which is why by breaking the elder wand Harry makes sure no one can use it again

    • @TheDark4light

      Yeah he breaks it. Without repairing his old wand. I can deal with him breaking it but really? What are we meant to assume he just got Ollivander to make another one? It was a brilliant scene in the book because it shows Harry staying as normal as he can despite who he could be.

    • @Jason0binladen
      @Jason0binladen 8 лет назад +1

      TheDark4light that and again broken wands are not usable they make that clear in the book, Ollivander couldn't make a wand made by death, a wand everyone would kill over for centuries, so Harry does the only reasonable thing he breaks it, making sure no one else could use it

    • @Jason0binladen
      @Jason0binladen 8 лет назад

      As for his old wand who's to say he doesn't just take a feather from Fauxes the Phoenix and have Ollivander make another wand? Ron didn't get his wand fixed he got a new one and never complained about it feeling wrong, the wand chooses the wizard therefor fixing broken wands is impossible because they are sentient to the point that they choose the wizard

    I think a major problem with these adaptations was that the movies were being made while the books were still being written, meaning the screenwriters and directors didn't know what would and what wouldn't be important.

    • @indy_go_blue6048
      @indy_go_blue6048 6 лет назад +10

      @@trisin What Rubberman means is that several of the films had been made or were in process before book 7 was published, and Jo herself says she was extremely secretive about how it would play out. Other reviewers, both serious and YT plebes like Cinemafix, have commented on the same thing.

    • @jmorgan3977
      @jmorgan3977 4 года назад +2

      Actually, JK Rowling was in constant contact with screenwriter Steve Kloves and did let the creative team know what would be important. For example, they were gonna cut Kreacher out of movie 5 (the only movie Kloves didn't write btw) but she told them he had to be in it because he'd be important later. These movies are different from the books simply because every movie adaptation is different from the books. I'm not saying you fall under this, but a lot of book readers can't seem to grasp that it's gonna be different, and that's ok that it is.

      Neither Gambon nor Harris was a good Dumbledore. Gambon was a little too over the top, and just has a totally different personality than the Dumbledore of the books. And Harris was too subdued, lacking any sort of gravitas, instead giving Dumbledore an aura of "I'm gonna drop dead any moment, and even speaking is a struggle for me." The Dumbledore of the books was described as a much more animated character than Harris's. But overall, I'm more willing to accept Gambon's stronger interpretation of the character rather than Harris's. Can you even imagine Harris dueling Voldemort in book 5??

    • @92Beyo
      @92Beyo 8 лет назад +38

      Yes I can. Harris never had the chance to play the more furious side of Dumbledore, he acted true to the source material, in Book 1 and 2 Dumbledore was that calm. Nevertheless, he was never described like how Gambon played him. Even when angry, it was more of a tranquil fury, never shouting like an idiot. I think Harris would have nailed that part.

    Actually, I think it's mentioned it was red light that hit Sirius in the department of mysteries, suggesting a stunner rather than a killing curse which is green. Going through the veil meant his death but if he hadn't fallen through, he might have been okay. In the film, they just make it green and clearer that Belatrix killed him.

    • @loreleishuck4453
      @loreleishuck4453 8 лет назад +3

      While a Stunning Spell is red, its not the only spell of that color. Knowing Bellatrix Lestrange, I think it is more likely that she would cast a Cruciatus Curse than a stunner, even if she and Sirius were cousins. Another possibility would be the Disarming Charm, which is said to have a Scarlet color.

    • @blablatarantino4718

    • @parttimesaint3165
      @parttimesaint3165 8 лет назад +34

      I whipped out my book to check.
      It says Bellatrix fired a jet of red light which Sirius easily evaded and he taunted her to do better. Bellatrix's "second jet of light" hit Sirius. It can easliy be assumed it was another red jet (which I, too, do) but it could be any colour.
      As to which spell she used, we can only assume it wasn't a green jet symbolising Avada Kedavra.
      The only indication is that Sirius' "eyes widened in chock" and he had a "look of mingled fear and surprise" on his face.
      Stupefy (as I see it) doesn't allow the target to show any emotions, they just drop unconcious. Who knows? Hagrid could take a few without falling. Maybe Sirius was just so resiliant he could stay concious (albeit not in control of his body) for the duration of him falling backwards into the veil.
      In short: All we know is that she used a jet of light. Colour presumably red.
      Have a nice day.

    Does anyone else here appreciate the fact that, instead of it being Mad-Eye that gives Harry the photo like in the book, it's Sirius that does it in the movie? Even if it was done to make up for lost time in Goblet of Fire, I think Sirius deserves that honor more than Mad-Eye Moody did.

    There is one thing hardly anyone mentions when talking about the differences, and understandably so since it doesn't really impact the plot, which is the wierd and totally awesome shit they see in the department of mysteries. The unspeakables working there, the brains, the time room and so much more. It's fascinating to see that there is actual research into different types of magic going on.

      One part that is actually really important from that part of the book is that they accidentally destroy all the time turners. I've heard so many people going "Why didn't they just go back in time and just shoot Voldermort?" but that wasn't an opinion since they all got wrecked.

  • @mellchiril

    to me one of the biggest differences (after the Christmas at the Closed Ward, of course), was the whole scene after the fight at the ministry. Dumbledore's explanation on Harry's connection with Voldemort, and how the prophecy plays into all of it.
    I know that it probably wouldn't have made for great movie content, but it would've made the rest of the story so much clearer if something along those lines had been in there.

I've read it 9 times so seeing them crap on the book with things like Voldemort slapping Harry, Voldemort turning into paper (?), omitting the great hall battle including McGonagall and Kingsley vs. Voldemort (what the heck?#?!), not having Mrs. Weasley shout, "Not my daughter, you bitch" as loud as humanly possible and worst of all omitting the central theme of love!!!! It's stated in the first book and movie, fifth book and movie but forgotten here! He literally sacrifices himself and Voldemort's spells don't work but in the movie he wins in a laughable duel. ugh the movies are so not great

      In all honesty, the only thing I dislike about 7 P2 is the way Voldemort dies. I think even in a movie context, it would have been more powerful for him to simply fall to his death after a tense moment of quiet (the moment of quiet being solely for the dramatic suspense that would better fit the theater).

      One of the things I really like about this series is that they discuss the differences, but generally don't judge them one way or the other. Most people can't seem to do this without injecting their opinion into it, and that often makes it seem biased one way or the other.

      Considering how the movies we have turned out in length just with what was cut, you could potentially have a 7 films at 6 hours per film (which no theater would logically carry) or a Hobbit treatment of anywhere between 14-21 movies covering the 7 books. That is a spell for disaster for a movie series!
      Adaptations have to trim their source material like this and present the focus and items related to the focus Ain the best way possible. I love the analysis these guys are doing. Another reviewer called The Dom is looking at the films, too, but complains about what gets removed without looking at the focus of how adaptation really works.

      Kye Dysarthria "you could potentially have a 7 films at 6 hours per film (which no theater would logically carry) or a Hobbit treatment of anywhere between 14-21 movies"
      So no, I'm pretty sure he didn't get it.
      As for whether a TV series could be perfectly adaptable is arguable. It is definitely possible. Especially if they make it 1 book = 1 Season of 22 episodes 45-60 mins long. That's potentially 22 hours per season ( the first seasons would be shorter, and the later ones longer to accommodate for the books). How accurately they stick to the storylines and the characters is really up to the director, but if they do anything near the existing movies, it'll be good enough.

    • @fightingmedialounge519

    The 5th book was probably my favorite, and my least favorite film adaptation. I think the biggest thing they missed, which I feel was conveyed by the book though not in so many words, was the thing about the mirror at the end: Harry could've used it to figure out Sirius wasn't actually in any danger, and In the book, I think he realizes this, but not so in the movie.

It’s balancing out themes and characters and streamlining it to make it complete and make sense in its own right. I respect the screenwriters much more after this.

      I think 6 was a worse adaptation because the book was great. 5 wasn't that good a book to begin with.

      The fifth movie is my favorite out of all of them. I think the movies did a much better job than the books in telling stuff that actually mattered and getting me interested in what was going on.

      disneydevil1 That stuff is all fine, but I never cared about the OWLs or Harry's detentions.

      I agree. The book is about becoming an adult and transitioning from school to an independent life which was so relatable. It's not about love!! On the other hand, in Deathly Hallows Harry essentially defeats Voldemort while in the movie he... idek. Deathly Hallows is easily the worst adaptation imo

      Agree. Because it was the last one, Part 2 was the biggest disappointment. EVerything else could have been forgotten if the Hallows, the horcruxes, the lessons about death and love, the character developements and Voldemort's death had been well written and executed.

    Although most of the film's finale is a rushed nonsensical mess, I do like the sequence with Voldemort possessing Harry better than the book version.
