    While working on a recent prop project, Adam realizes that he needed better lighting for his workshop bench, and embarks on building a custom light rig for illuminating his builds. Using off-the-shelf parts like an affordable LED light panel, Adam wires up this versatile bench lamp that can be positioned precisely where he needs it!

      They’re very conscious of it and I really appreciate it. You can tell they put thought into it because the only time they use music is during time lapses, which effectively serve as montages, and it’s absolutely appropriate. It takes a lot of guts to have silence. Easy to hide our crimes with distracting sound.

    Adam: a note I've picked up when splicing wires like you're doign with the power supply, I always cut the wires positive and negative staggered, that way when I solder them and heat shrink them the two joints aren't side by side, and makes the overall form more narrow and less likely to bind or rub against one another either, though your loc-line has plenty of room inside of it.

    I liked this build well enough to model my own on it. Instead of armature wire, I used a doubled length of 8 gauge copper wire. I left the wire insulating sheath in place. I created a "nut" for the 3/4" NPT plastic fitting from a copper pipe fitting hiding in my plumbing junk drawer and soldered the 8-gauge copper stiffener to the "nut" so that that end was secure. I then drilled an appropriately sized hole in my workbench to secure the lamp. I modified the flange on the lamp end and used the shoe mount to secure the lamp to the arm. This light supplements the fluorescent ring-lamp with magnifier to improve the lighting on the bench. 4600K is the color temperature that matches that of the fluorescent lamp, but a higher temperature that the LED can provide is a good supplement to the LED lamps that I use on the microscope in that area of the bench. So far, I'm quite pleased with this idea.

    There's some ring light options that are similar brightness/size that would allow you to "look through" the light-would be handy for extra small things that you'd like even light all the way around an object.
    With the way this is built (and the beefiness of the power supply used) you could swap out light heads depending on what the project calls for.

    I would really like to hear from Joey what he thinks of these and similarly priced LEDs for actual photography (videography, too, but photography especially). I know he will prefer higher-end solutions, but a rating of several cheap possibilities like this from a professional photographer's point of view would be very valuable.

    Love your work Adam. Here's a tip for future wire splices: Offset, or stagger, splices this way if you rub through the internal heat shrink due to the wires moving you are less likely to end up with a short. This will also reduce the bulk of that area of the wire allowing it to transition through conduit etc. more easily.

    • @kyleberger9890
      @kyleberger9890 6 лет назад +1

      Thank you! I am going to use that method for my next wire splice.

    • @wupme
      @wupme 6 лет назад +1

      Yeah that mythical short circuit danger from not staggering them. Which is why almost every company in the world doesn't stagger them. Its not needed, especially not if you apply a second heatshrink around both like adam did.

    • @4team25
      @4team25 6 лет назад +1

      Yes it is generally a good idea to stagger/offset the splices, but since it's not shaking or vibrating and doesn't move a lot, i'm 99% sure it won't short in a long time. If it was in a aircraft or even a car, yes sure it's a big nono, but we don't do splice like that either.

    You could also 3D print the delrin piece to be any shape you want if your printer can get the resolution on the threads right, I've had some very good success 3D printing SLA resin fittings. To actually get a good model there's addons like CoolOrange for Autodesk Inventor which model the entire thread for you (keep in mind, SLA fittings don't work well in wet applications as the cured resin becomes soft with prolonged water contact)

    • @EvanRustMakes
      @EvanRustMakes 6 лет назад +2

      FDM (most home printers) can't make precise threads at all. Just buying a solid block of something and then drilling/tapping the threads will work best.

    • @Dloweification

      I was talking about SLA resin, as mentioned multiple times. But you're right, filament printers wont be able to do it.

    • @crystalsoulslayer
      @crystalsoulslayer 6 лет назад +50

      I think you mean "work hardening." If it is more or less straight aluminum like Adam says, that will probably take quite a while as long as he's not moving it every 3 seconds. Even if it does work harden and eventually snap, it shouldn't be super hard to replace.

    • @GreasyGoon
      @GreasyGoon 6 лет назад +10

      The soft ally wire is made to be malleable and flexible. I'm sure if you bent it continuously and harshly in the exact same spot it'd eventually give but, it's made to do that.

      You dont have to solder the wire either, you can just twist the ends together and insulate them with electrical tape

    • @pr0xZen
      @pr0xZen 4 года назад +1

      @@fakename287 I wouldn't advice this particular bit. With the wire and rod in there, there is bound to be a but of tug on the cable inside from time to time when twisting and bending it. Shouldn't be so much as to tear the cables, but it would probably be enough force to pull the twisted ends apart over time.
      If you have to do it like this, at the very least cut the two wires an inch or two apart, and heatshrink the joints for extra support. If the twisted joints should come apart, the live ends should stay inside the heatshrink. If all fails and they do not, the exposed metal ends will be an inch or two apart along the length of the cable, so they are unlikely to contact and short eachother out. And, having the joints a bit apart, reduces the overall circumference at the joint, which is always a plus when pulling and housing a wire inside another narrow channel. Especially a flexible one.

  • @ellesmerewildwood4858
    @ellesmerewildwood4858 6 лет назад +10

    I'm surprised Adam didn't stagger the two wires he soldered. Leaving them both side by side, even with the shrink could lead to a short by abrasion over time.
    I love the lamp though.
    And as others have commented, it's great to see another one day build. I've been reduced to re-runs. :o)

    • @Nevir202
      @Nevir202 6 лет назад

      Ellesmere Wildwood hats the point of the bigger heat shrink.
      Abrasion requires movement and there will be very, very little of that with them squeezed together like that.

    • @donreid358
      @donreid358 6 лет назад +3

      He also did not check the polarity of the supply's output. Don't assume that the red wire is positive, check it with your meter!

    • @ellesmerewildwood4858
      @ellesmerewildwood4858 6 лет назад +6

      This is no criticism of Adam's work, I wish I had just one tenth of Adam's God level skills. Many people don't do this when joining multiple wires but it comes from many years of experience in loom splicing, it's just good practice to stagger the wires. Staggering also reduces the diameter of the finished loom. In this case it's just two wires but even then the joint would look like a snake that's just swallowed a mouse. In a large loom it would look like a snake that swallowed a donkey.
