@Nomore4x4s I understand what are you saying and I agree, but by that logic, you dont need a BMW at all, Golf or Focus with 150 BHP engines will do the job you want. @Bigger Issues I’ve had the latest software on a new ECU that was fitted after my car was stolen (and recovered) it barely managed 40mpg on motorway. Got a tuner to fix it with a rollback and a new map now getting what I originally got.
@Bigger Issues VRS in Northampton helped me. BMW were useless. Could offer no explanation why my car was doing 25% less mpg than before they replaced the ECU. G Staples about 1 second , but considering that M340d is only 30-40kg heavier and with a tune from Schnitzer you have 385 hp and 790nm , it will be even faster than M340i in 0-200. It will also be much more efficient and better cruiser. In my opinion M340d sedan is the best non fully m car you can buy by far 😍
48v mild hybrid is what these things needed, they purposely provide torque-fill to overcome any turbo lag. An absolutely outstanding car, particularly as a frugal, extremely fast daily but yeah the lack of revs and short gearing probably do for it Vs the M340i as an all out enjoyable fast car
Great video Joe and also great to see a petrolhead giving an honest opinion on a diesel. I have had 320D, 330D, 335D and 435D. I currently have a V8 petrol as a treat to myself but there is something very special about the BMW straight 6 diesel and how easy it is to live with on a daily basis. It is quicker, in gear, than most petrol engined cars, makes overtaking so easy and yet sips fuel at a very parsimonious rate: what's not to like? It even sounds decent.

After seeing your review of the M340d, looks like you might have me putting my hand in my pocket again for one of these! Great video mate and keep up the good work. Cheers for now. Jez.
I totally agree. But I don't believe BMW, or this channel, want potential buyers knowing that the general concept of this car has been around for 5-6 years. I'll be honest and say I was a little annoyed that the 335d wasn't mentioned in the review...sorry Joe. Regarding F31 it was a slightly better driving/handling car post facelift (2016my) and the performance figures are minimal difference between 335d and M340d by the looks of things.I know what I'd have at 50% of the cost of the later.
Another excellent review Joe. Brilliantly put. I will miss my 430d coupe so much when she goes back next year. The way the 6 pot diesel make the car so effortless to drive amazes me every time I get in, also has such split personality with the different drive modes. I'm sure this one moves the game on even further.
I've got a 318d touring which performance wise obviously isn't on par with an m340d but my word do I have a fun time driving it. Brilliant car no matter the model.
Thank you for the brilliant test , Joe 👍Do you know the name of the colour of your test car ?I think this colour is not available in Germany ..best regards
Wish we had the M340i or M340d touring in the states. Would much rather have one of them than my wife’s X3. Love your reviews Joe. Stay safe during the new lockdown.
Great vid, picking up my new M340i Touring tomorrow...always owned 2 door sports cars (including the recent M4) so looking forward to the new experience..
Natural progression form the already excellent 335d. A few tenths slower than the petrol. But You get true 40mpg+. With xdrive it’s about all you could ever need in a car!
Hi Joe! You really put a big smile on my face with this video!! 😃 As you might remember from Instagram I just got my M340d (same wonderful colour too!), and during the wait for delivery I’ve been waiting for weeks for a good test drive video of this car, and I’m so glad that one of the first to come out is your!! Seeing the expression on your face and how much fun you were having going sideways really made me even more proud of my new car! I think -as you do- that it’s a really impressive combo car/engine/gearbox, especially for being a diesel, and its huge torque is what really makes the difference in everyday use! 💪 Such a complete package!! #sheerdrivingpleasure Thanks for the video 🙏🏻, loved every minute of it! 🔝🔝 And lots of my friends will love it too!! 😉
Good video. Interesting that the m340i is faster than the d though, now they're both AWD it's a fair comparison. In the UK the 335d was only ever xdrive so people would mistake a fractionally faster 0-62 on paper as meaning the d was a quicker car - this proves, as I suspected that the B58 engine is superior - despite the lower peak torque figure the 340i will spread it over a bigger range and being able to rev to 7k gives more flexibility for in gear sprints not to mention noise and drama. I've no doubt the m340d is extremely competent but ultimately there'd be just no point unless you were doing big miles. And I can't imagine many are these days..? (Speaking as an f31 340i owner which I absolutely love).
To be honest matey, having owned both the 335d and M340d now, you're getting the economy across all trip types, long and short. I did like the M340i, but I do have the big commutes and trips - and the 335d was just a dream for them. It was a 45mpg missile, and the M340d is no different - and both put the S4 in the shade.
@@gust0oyes but the m340i allegedly gets 40 (I've read even 45) on a run so it's hard to justify the diesel, with he extra fuel cost and maintenance likely eroding any money savings.
The 330d is such an appealing car now 286bhp 680nm 0-60 5.3 , remapped it will push 340bhp and 800nm, 56mpg, rwd and reasonable insurance, I think an m340i is overkill for 90% of the time you're driving it.
It is not only about 0-100 km/h! What about 100-200? Or 80-120? There you'll see the real gain and more power difference for the M340i. The maximum torque rpm range is a lot bigger for the petrol, also the maximum power range. This diesel is very good, but Joe, you know what I mean. The petrol sound and feel is on another level as well.
I owned a X3 M40i for a few years. I checked on RUclips (AutoTopNL etc.) and it seems 0-160 km/h and 0-200 km/h are way quicker for X3 M40i vs. M40d, but very similar for 0-100, 4.8s vs. 4.9s. M40i - 160 10s, 200 17s, M40d - 160 12s, 200 20s. I would say this is quite a difference. Indeed, it has 326HP and 680nm instead of 340HP and 700NM with MHEV, but also M340i is a bit more powerful with 374HP vs. 360HP. It would be nice you to shoot the videos with the comparison.

A truly amazing car, that hopefully will stop people buying a "X" model, but probably not. My only displeasure is that unavoidable 5k rpm limit. With such a good autobox though, and just cruising, I'm sure it's fine. But I'd still have the 340i.
@@wheelieking3976 I’ve had V6 diesels, and loved them. Day to day and cruising they are good. But they are not as rewarding as a free revving power petrol.
I too have an e91 but the 335d. It’s a tough one to find a replacement for as the driving experience of these cars is amazing. Like you, I’m tempted by this one though.

The way the 6 pot diesel make the car so effortless to drive amazes me every time I get in, also has such split personality with the different drive modes. I'm sure this one moves the game on even further.
Great video. Test drove then bought an M340d touring based following this video. Thanks for the great reviews.
Great revue Joe, best car I’ve owned and I’ve owned a few, especially as a touring! 👍
Great vid.
We just took delivery of our 530d touring. Really wish we had gone for the M340d instead. Looks amazing.
New viewer & subscriber to your channel. Really enjoy the content and your delivery 👍
I drive a 435d at the minute so I’ll be paying particular attention to your 440d review next year! Great no-nonsense vid as usual 👍🏻
Love my F31 335d LCI Touring. Best car I’ve ever owned
I have the same, also the best car I've ever owned 👍
Wish we had the M340i or M340d touring in the states. Would much rather have one of them than my wife’s X3. Love your reviews Joe. Stay safe during the new lockdown.
M340i is the car I would buy from bmw if I had the money over those m cars. It’s is an excellent all round to me.
Seeing this makes me want one! Perfect car!
125 k subs, awesome, mate 💪🏻
I would definitely get the D. I drive a 335d M Sport touring now, love the pants off it
I love me some powerful diesel cars. Have no idea why they're getting killed in other brands. Id rather get 7-9l/100km than 10-15l/100km in petrol
Its about taxes. In Nederlands you will pay maybe 130 euro per month extra for this diesel. Only worth it, if you make manyyy kms per month
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍Not Only Being A Diesel Heard Am Also A BMW Die Hard Fan.This Is The Perfect BMW!!
ive got an f30 335d and its easily the best all round 'family car' car i've ever driven
You should be on a million followers this time next year 10 out 10 again, great presentation.
Hi Joe!
You really put a big smile on my face with this video!! 😃
As you might remember from Instagram I just got my M340d (same wonderful colour too!), and during the wait for delivery I’ve been waiting for weeks for a good test drive video of this car, and I’m so glad that one of the first to come out is your!!
Seeing the expression on your face and how much fun you were having going sideways really made me even more proud of my new car!
I think -as you do- that it’s a really impressive combo car/engine/gearbox, especially for being a diesel, and its huge torque is what really makes the difference in everyday use! 💪
Such a complete package!! #sheerdrivingpleasure
Thanks for the video 🙏🏻, loved every minute of it! 🔝🔝
And lots of my friends will love it too!! 😉
Great video again Joe. Any idea if the 48v mild hybrid system will be added on the M340i?
BMW 3l diesel engines are the best 👍👍👍👍👍
@@gust0oyes but the m340i allegedly gets 40 (I've read even 45) on a run so it's hard to justify the diesel, with he extra fuel cost and maintenance likely eroding any money savings.
we want a drag race : m340d vs m340i
This looks like the ultimate car for me Joe. 👌 Great content lately 💪
Show me how it's done 🎬
Joe...truly appreciate your reviews and your BMW enthusiasm. Your recent Touring reviews made me miss even more the '14 F31 3 series Touring we had.. Picked it up at the Welt and It was the M Sport with the Adaptive Suspension..lease was up and ....well.....shucks....spouse wanted something different. NOW...can't even get the Touring in any version in the U.S.
Good video diesels are fantastic for torque no need for red lining and so relaxing as you say makes a change from the petrols.
Fantastic engine. Super silky and creamy engine. Average economy is 39mpg
Hey Joe
I love watching your videos, you are the best when it comes to car reviews, shhhhh dont mention that to Matt from CARWOW LOL, after watching your review on the BMW 440i i went and got myself the M440i Coupe, and love the car, now even better power after getting the ECU remapped, now pushing 425BHP and 650NM.
Regards Sean.
Joe, How does this one compare to my 750d? Should I change?
Superb car, superb engine, superb specs. 🤩 Thanks Joe ! 😁
Joe, absolutely excellent work. Your videos pushed me over the line and I am picking up a used M340d Touring Pano, Tech Pack in 1 week! I would love your opinion on the Run flat debate. Mine has just 35k kms and I guess on the original Potenza RFT - I just saw where Michelin have a PS4 runflat - is that an abomination? If I don’t go rft is it a big risk do you think?
That's incredible. Great video Joe, as always. Please share your post love the seats. Had a 325i Coupe years ago with red leather.
I'm going to be replacing my beloved F30 30d with one of these me thinks. Bloody lovely car. 😍
Test drove one of these today and loved it. Will be trading in my F80 M3 on Wednesday for the M340d Saloon version. After watching this review, I’m really looking forward to picking it up. Bit worried that I may regret letting the M3 go, but I don’t actually think I will. Liked and subscribed 👍
Tune the m340d , it’s going to be an amazing sleeper stage 1 0-200 in 14-14.5 seconds
Good morning M. Achilles, I’m a fan of you from Spain, actually I have a BMW 340i and next year I have that change de car, for my job I have 40.000km for year and I want to know if the best option for you is the M340d and which’s your opinion about this car (especially gasoline cost and sensations), best regards!!
Great review mate & what an awesome everyday family car or for those odd occasions where you need to flash the sports car in front to get out of the way as long as it’s not 🌧
BMWs diesel engines really are amazing. cars like the 530d and 330d are allready stunning in the way they drive
BMW M DELIVERED ONCE AGAIN, cheers joe
That exact car colour and spec will be my next car.
Great review
How is it on reliability? I'm considering buying a used one.
The NSW Police in Australia are using the the 530D for Highway Patrol now
Never thought I would watch a diesel review but seems cool!
Been looking for a replacement for my e91 330d and it sounds like this could be it. Nice video and review 😊👍🏻
I too have an e91 but the 335d. It’s a tough one to find a replacement for as the driving experience of these cars is amazing. Like you, I’m tempted by this one though.
Good video - and fantastic diesel-train 👍😎
Lovely car Joe, but it's a bit too red inside. 👍
Yes I’m not a fan either, red trim is a bit loud, but it’s probably my age! 😆
Couldn't agree more. Should've gone with more of a burgandy tone imo
Not big on the red either, but it looks worse in photos than in real life.
Another great review, Joe. This one is definitely on my list. I've always liked the 6 cylinder diesel touring. I've never heard of a race/test track where you can't have any tyre squeal.... Really?! 😆
Good video from Joe Achilles. I think it is high time that we stopped conveying this idea that an estate car should not perform in such a dynamic fashion. Modern engineering can deal with this challenge. Sounds like a good event by BMW to enable Joe to present this great car in an exciting way to his audience. Choosing between M340i and M340d would be a tough task.
