  • After his gig at the beautiful seaside venue (Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society) south of San Francisco, Adams is interviewed by George Hughes of KJAZ Radio in September 1977. (The interview was video taped by a television crew from San Francisco State University, apparently reusing old videotape, which was not fully erased). Two weeks prior, Adams left the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra after an eleven-year run. Adams discusses his upcoming schedule in the Bay Area, his future gigs overseas, his time with Thad/Mel, being a parent, and the New York jazz scene. This is likely the only existing video footage of Pepper Adams speaking. Note: I've reposted this video with enhanced audio. More interviews of Pepper Adams can be found at www.pepperadam...
"Reflectory - The Life and Music of Pepper Adams," by Gary Carner, has been released: www.pepperadam...

Thank you for the repost! It was very challenging to hear the original as you apparently know.

This is a bad interview. The interviewer holds the mike close to his mouth but he doesn't put it near enough to Pepper and it's hard to hear him. He was clearly annoying Pepper, trying to push the discussion in a direction in which Pepper didn't want to go. And he spoke far too much: let the star do the talking. If the interviewer were questioning a witness in court, there would be constant objections about leading the witness and the questioner answering his own questions. Pepper was very patient with him.
