  • The last show ever, until the BBC revives it Twin Peaks style in 2024, anyway.
You'll notice the sound is muted during the short Richard and Nathalie montage (10.50-11.25). This is due to use of The Kinks Dedicated Follower of Fashion, which RUclips won't let me use due to a copyright claim.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for uploading this. I'm Irish and when the series was first transmitted, some of us just couldn't understand how L&H got away with it, ON A SUNDAY MORNING! Great fun then, great fun now. Full marks - now time for a slug from my flask of WEAK LEMON DRINK....

Fantastic memories of waking up half baked on a Sunday and enjoying this, wondering how they got away with half of it. Absolutely Classic. Kevin Eldon and Rod Hull were magical.🙏

Having re-watched these all over the past few days, I've been surprised that the thing that's aged the worst is some of Stewart Lee's material. His stuff about Gail Porter (and, more generally, other models or presenters) doing photoshoots for 'lad mags' seems really mean-spirited and almost misogynistic. "KFC chicken leg breasts" is a low point in it. I realise everybody learns and changes massively between their late 20s and their late 40s but considering what Lee is like now, I can't figure out where that material came from.

@@diverguy3556 It's bizarre, isn't it? I want to give him the benefit of the doubt but there's a real venom in his delivery of some of it that makes it pretty grim. You have to wonder if revisiting that stuff factored into him pulling out of the DVD collection project Rich was trying to get going a few years ago

@@diverguy3556 Oh sure, I'm not suggesting that Stu of today should be held accountable for the Stu of yesteryear's attempts at edginess.
I do feel my opinion of him has been somewhat knocked over or spilled, though. Almost like it's fallen out of a cupboard.

@@pkpckls I think it came about as a reaction to the Lad culture that was so prevalent in the 90s and they just went with him being puritanical about it as their twist on it. I dare say these days they would have a much more nuanced take that didn't rely on falling into negative and vaguely sexist notions. I think he also falls into the same pitfall I find myself falling into and assuming that since I'm not racist and sexist the people I'm talking to will understand the inherent irony in saying something inflammatory and not take it at face value.
It's also worth adding that Rich wrote a lot of Stews parts but the dynamic of their stage personas means they had to be performed by "the comedian Stewart Lee". It's funny when people criticize Rich and say he's trying to copy Stew when he does standup because they have clearly had an influence on each other over the years they worked together. You can watch Stew doing standup and pick out bits that are very Herring and vice versa.

You're overthinking the parts that you're over-sensitive about.
Stew was equally cynical, rightly, about the shallowness of both lad and ladette culture.
