- In this video, I’m using the subtractive, or ‘Reductive’, method of tonal drawing of fabric starting with a toned ground, using vine charcoal, then creating a gesture drawing of the fabric with charcoal pencils. From there, I use a variety of erasers to pick out the varying degrees of lighter values, leaving the toned ground as the mid-tones and reflective light of the drawing. Vine charcoal and charcoal pencils are also used to add darker values in this fabric study.
do more please- love the speed you work at- keeps the energy in the final composition but holds onto essential detail

What paper are you using and which paper do you find best for being able to easily lift the vine charcoal?
Hi! Sorry for the late response. I’m using Strathmore Series 400 Drawing (recycled paper). There are other great papers specifically made for charcoal drawing in the Strathmore series that are worth trying.
Thank you, very nice. What is the pencil you are using?
Hi, thank you! I’m using charcoal pencils.
