We’re shooting out to 1400 yards at targets but after 500yards I hold off for cruelty reasons. I shoot a 300 win mag and a 308 I’m just not confident the animal won’t suffer.
You can determine your ft lbs of energy on impact to determine where your range limit is. 300 win mag with 3000fps muzzle velocity on a 180-210 grain bullet will take an elk at any range out to and past 1000yds as long as the shot is accurate. Cross winds I think are the biggest factor when you get into the several hundred yd shots. Most hunters (almost all hunters) should stay within 300-400 yd max. These guys are measuring temperature, elevation, pressure, windage, aspect angle, etc...
I'll tell you what I don't clean my gun during the season after fouling the bore unless of course I role down the hill with it and put the criwn in the dirt but I hit the range and foul in again before heading back out
Aaron after how many rounds do you recommend cleaning the Magnum calibers? I've heard when it looses accuracy because cleaning more often is wearing out the barrel faster? Thanks
You only clean out the powder fouling, you leave the copper in there as it makes the rifle more accurate, at some point, usually about 600 rounds, the accuracy will start to fall off, then you clean all the copper out and start over
