    We’re shooting out to 1400 yards at targets but after 500yards I hold off for cruelty reasons. I shoot a 300 win mag and a 308 I’m just not confident the animal won’t suffer.

      You can determine your ft lbs of energy on impact to determine where your range limit is. 300 win mag with 3000fps muzzle velocity on a 180-210 grain bullet will take an elk at any range out to and past 1000yds as long as the shot is accurate. Cross winds I think are the biggest factor when you get into the several hundred yd shots. Most hunters (almost all hunters) should stay within 300-400 yd max. These guys are measuring temperature, elevation, pressure, windage, aspect angle, etc...

    Aaron after how many rounds do you recommend cleaning the Magnum calibers? I've heard when it looses accuracy because cleaning more often is wearing out the barrel faster? Thanks

    • @joshlower1
      @joshlower1 4 месяца назад +1

      You only clean out the powder fouling, you leave the copper in there as it makes the rifle more accurate, at some point, usually about 600 rounds, the accuracy will start to fall off, then you clean all the copper out and start over

    So question Aaron, we all know that metal is porous, so how "deep" into the pores of the barrel does the powder fouling as well as the copper,brass, lead penetrate over time, AND can it start to lead to metal fatigue? I sure wish you had some "classes" on DVD on armory topics. I would SURELY BUY the entire set. Thanks again for the wonderful insight of our firearms. :)

    I think my 143 gr. ELC-X 6.5 PRC ammo might work on elk out to 600 yards. Still enough energy out of my Browning X-Bolt Pro
    (SCOPE: Bushnell LRTS 4.5 - 18 x 44 W/ illuminated G3 reticle in Talley rings and a bubble level in the top of the rear ring.)

    Imagine erecting your tents in a rainstorm. You'd have to set up the poles under the fly THEN crawl under to clip in the inner tent. Not a good design! Try Tarptent designs. Made in USA.
    BTW, my Nevada "mountain rifle" is a 6.5 PRC Browning X-Bolt Pro. Love that rifle. Trigger is 2 lbs. 9 oz. by my digital meter.
    As for barrels. my X-bolt Pro has a factory lapped stainless steel barrel. Much easier to clean with far less copper build-up.
    But I've also found that RUGER makes VERY accurate cold hammer forged barrels, even on the inexpensive American models.

    Thanks for sharing guys! Nice shot and congratulations on the nice bull elk! I don’t understand why people are so negative about taking a long shot claiming it to be “unethical.” It seems to me that the party in this video was experienced and very familiar with their equipment and ballistics. They knew their own limitations and abilities and that of their firearm. It takes money and time to acquire that level of precision. How is this unethical? Thats like someone who hunts with a musket saying it’s unethical for taking a deer at 200 yards with a scoped rifle because you should stay within 100. Is it more ethical for you to kill a deer at 200 yards with your Winchester 30-30 that you bought at Walmart with a Bushnell scope? Hunting is a sport not a necessity for most anyway.. each person should know their own limitations and that of their firearms. For some this could be 770 yards, others 100 and some should not even be out with a firearm. Congratulations again guys!

    • @robinvovolka6197
      @robinvovolka6197 2 года назад +1

      @Charles Eginton Incorrect in my view. It's the much higher likelihood of having an injured animal disappear over a ridge or into brush and not being recovered by the hunter. While a slower death is perhaps less ethical to some people, it's wasting a public resource that is the unethical part. While this can happen at frankly any range, the chance of a minor miss causing this sort of wastage increases with distance. Just my thoughts.

      Quit crying on the internet because you had a shitty hunting season and never kill anything worth taking a photo of. I build my own gun, ammunition, and shoot 2500-3500 rounds per year practicing my marksmanship. I have killed animals off hand at 90 yards and killed several 190+ bucks beyond 800 yards. With only one shot. The same way I shoot my bow out to lethal, data proved, ethical range with fixed broadheads. I shoot my rifle within the lethality distance of 2000fps and 1700 pounds of energy. How is that not ethical? It all comes down to data analysis and marksmanship training year round.

      Lazy , slob hunter unwilling to stalk in closer cuz that would mean he,d have to get out of his truck he drove to the spot and carry his rifle half a mile. See more and more of HIS KIND every year , teaching our next generation the fine art of being a SLOB HUNTER.

      Was a 7mag. Though 6.5 is a great caliber so idk why you would hate on it. Seems your jealous you can’t take shots past 200 yards with your gramps 30-06
