- Joseph Yoakum (1891-1972) didn't start creating art until he was in his 70s. Self-taught in his use of ballpoint pens, colored pencil and pastels, Yoakum (who claimed Native American ancestry, and whose mother was a formerly-enslaved African American) created magical landscapes, now currently on view at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Correspondent Rita Braver reports.

It’s not every day that we hear about amazing art, from the artists that we haven’t heard from in long time. Great piece!
Who we haven’t heard from, not that. He’s a human being.
Im a late bloomer. After my heart attack at 56 been doing art since. Retired tractor trailer driver.
The art of Joseph Yoakum inspires me to continue to pursue work that is creative.
👍🏿
Really beautiful work. This seems like just the tip of this story. Needs a biographical book!
Yes
It's never too late to pursue your dreams!
Beautiful work and inspiring man
This is my great great grandfather, and no it is correct he was not Navajo, however he was full blood Cherokee. His mother was not African American that was the name that was given to my ancestors once we were forced to stop calling ourselves indigenous.
Around the turn of the century when they started allowing people to become Indian by paying five dollars which was where the term 5 dollar Indian came from.
He is an aboriginal of this land his lineage is of the southeastern woodlands aborigines. No one is perfect and we all make mistakes but I'm grateful to know about him and the way I found out was through an artist who found my tree and was trying to connect his children my maternal grandfather.
🙌⛩️🕉️☯️⚛️⛩️🙌.
goes to show you that is who you know in the art world not just the art. This looks like kids drawings. He could have been a lovely caring man but the art is mid level at best.
One glaring misspeak and misdraw: the Navajo do not live in tipis, Mr. Yoakum and you do not resemble the Dine either. Love your work though.
Stop this nonsense. Another example of hipster, artistic, nonsense. Look at these paintings, childlike. Fine art is whatever you can convince grey haired, rich women is art and then this nonsense begins.
You feel better now getting all that off your chest?
a little harsh but I agree not top work. Its all who you know. Also lots of modern art is more the story of the artist than art itself
