The reason I was upset with Francesca's storyline is precisely because if I ever fall in love, I could see myself having the quiet sweet kind of love she did than the dramatic stories the other couples had. Not everyone finds or wants toxic, dramatic love. I adored her and John, they were the best part of Part 1 and most of part 2 for me. By hinting Francesca was attracted to Michela from the get-go, it negates her and John's story's core theme of appreciating the quiet love. She literally got married to John a few days ago and the way she reacted after their wedding kiss was so bad, she looked so disappointed. In the books, theres no doubt Francesca loved John romantically. She just discovers that love can be different with different people but that doesnt diminish what she and John had. Its a beautiful story of grief and second chances in a very mature way. Its horrible that they messed it up. Also hers is the only book I've read so this makes it double worse.

    • @netflixpartyy
      @netflixpartyy  3 месяца назад +485

Yesss I was surprised to see the face she made at the wedding kiss because she did genuinely love John and was attracted to him! No idea why they changed it, I feel like it negates all the lessons she taught Violet about how even though she loves differently and less passionately it doesn’t make that love any less meaningful. As someone who more drawn to quiet types as well I really identified with that!

IMO most of the stories you see feel unfulfilled: Benedict’s lacked actual character development, Eloise backslides but isn’t called out on it, Pen self depreciates and undermines all the good Whistledown has done, Colin actually had character development but had out of character scenes, Kate actually had something interesting going on with her seeming to not want to end the honeymoon but they just chuck that conflict out the window?

I don't like to be too critical when it comes to shows, unless it's a serious matter of disrespect or misrepresentation, I just think of the hard work and the time that was invested into the show. However, this season, specifically the ending, did not feel fulfilling for the characters. Daphne and Simon had that deep, intimate moment in the rain, followed by the birth of their baby. Simon and Kate had that BEAUTIFUL moment under the fireworks (still gives me chills), and we get a glimpse into their married life. It just made sense, Daphne and Simon having a baby and being content with that, and Anthony and Kate having a full-circle moment playing pall mall. This season, the ball was beautiful, but it didn't feel too intimate or special. Maybe it wasn't as impactful because the couple lacked scenes throughout the season itself. And with the baby, I genuinely thought one sister had twins. I just wished they would have a full-circle moment as well. Perhaps showing a flashback from when they first met and how they are now, or seeing them read each other's writings. I think that would have been touching 🤍

it is exactly from the books. but i want to explain it from the show:
pen felt really devastated about her future (she was already "the laughingstock of the ton" as she said and now they publicly shamed her for asking colin's help), she thought no one would want to marry her anymore.
i mean, the men in ep3 made fun of her at that evening, so she was right, she didn't know debling was interested in her at that point.
her being such a hopeless situation - living under her mom's roof with her bully sisters without any prospects in her third year on the marriage mart - dealing with more gossip that SHE HAD TO write about herself...she was on the edge.
pen, loving the thought of love itself, thought she'll never experience a thing like a kiss. she felt so vulnerable in that scene, could only open herself to her closest friend, colin.
she could not hide her thoughts anymore, she said what she felt. she asked colin, as her best friend to be merciful and give her a kiss.
she didn't want it, because she wanted colin to feel more towards her, no. she wanted a kiss, because she really had that on her mind, she will never have one...so sad.
it is the irony of the situation that pen thought colin did it out of pity and she felt uncomfortable in the end by it, while colin's world changed in 180 degrees and finally started to acknowledge his long time feelings for her after that pivotal moment.

Things I would add that would fix Bridgerton season 3 (even tho I ate it up):
    - In the scene where he’s in his study and the candlelight starts to burn out, add flashbacks of season 1 and 2 to show he’s always loved her but never realised it
    - A scene of Penelope reading Colin’s manuscript and giving editing advice so the betrayal on Colin’s part really sinks in. Like you were out here giving me writing advice and never once during that did you consider telling me why you share my passion for writing? Might as well call me an idiot while you at it.
    - After the scene where he fetches a pillow and blanket from their bedroom, they should’ve shown him unable to sleep on the chaise lounge. Then we see him sneak into the bedroom, sneak onto the bed and wrap his arm around her waist. This shows that, while he’s still trying to sort out his whole feelings on the matter, he still loves her, he still wants to be near her and he doesn’t want her to be alone on their wedding night. Yes, he still slept on the chaise lounge in front of their room to be near her, but do you think a general audience will get that on their first watch? And it’s just a cute trope, idk 🤷🏾‍♀️ a man who can’t keep himself away from you even when he’s mad at you is cute to me.
    - The confession that he gives her at the butterfly ball should’ve been placed in the scene when Penelope is speaking to Colin in the study during Fran’s wedding. Instead of him saying he doesn’t know why he can’t let go of the whole LW thing, we have him confess his envy of her there and then. His “I love you with everything I am, everything I’ve been and everything I hope to be” speech from the book should be at the butterfly ball instead.
    - Benedict’s bi arc should’ve started in ep 5 and not ep 6/7. It would’ve felt more poignant if they had given it more time to develop.
    - When Colin, Benedict and John were at Will’s bar closure, and Benedict was talking about how he felt he had no purpose, I would’ve had Colin immediately clock that and ask Benedict what was going on as soon as Will and John were out of earshot. Colin was the only one who clocked that something deeper was going on with Eloise and was the only one who asked her what exactly was up as soon as he did, so it only makes sense that he did the same with Benedict. Also, it kinda shows the audience that Colin and Benedict have now switched places. In season 2, it was Colin without a purpose and Benedict had his art. In season 3, Colin now has a purpose in life with his writing, and because Benedict has given up on art, he has no purpose anymore. Colin knows where he’s been, he would’ve been the perfect person to give Benedict advice.

But otherwise, I really loved his confession at the end of the season, it might actually be one of my favourites Bridgerton speeches because it really was tailored to her and spoke of someone who admired her and her resilience, I just wanted it to come earlier in the episode. Also, don’t come for me but I don’t really get the hype around the “bane of my existence, object of all my desires” speech because it spoke of sexual desire/lust and not love to me, I much prefer Anthony’s speech in s2 ep 8.

They almost ruined pen's character with the whistledown arch. The whole point of whistledown being pen was that she was so ignored in society that people didn't acknowledge her presence and she could hear their gossips, publish them, and still no one suspected her. Not that people would confid in her (seeing her as a friend) with their secrets and then she goes ahead and writes about them to ruin them in society's eyes, like what she did to Eloise or Thompson.
I hate how her character is written in the show. She's portraied almost as bad a Cressida is written in books, using her platform for her own greed. Which is why I don't understand why every other character is getting a redemption arch except her.
They all suck in the show anyway

I actually like that Eloise wasn't just morphed into this perfect feminist. I feel like in future seasons they could explore her 'hypocrisies' that she is so obviously blind to. Maybe in a future season she'll be forced to do something in the name of her values instead of just preaching them to the masses. I love her. And I find her not doing a a 180 to be very realistic and full of potential storytelling and character developing. OH- I also hope that her being a bad friend towards Cressida at the end of the season will come back and bite her in the butt just for the sake of character development.

As Eloise lover and someone that shares her dislike of marriage, I think it's understandable for her to hate the entire thing to the point of "preaching" when nobody listens to her. If anything, the frustration has piled up and as an ace, it's so annoying to always tell people I just am not looking for any romantic partners and certainly never want to have children. there's so many things to criticize with the institution of marriage (or assumption of romantic love as the only greatest love) and telling that to people could make you be seen as irrational or radical.
But yeah, definitely hope there would be more progress to Eloise for her to see things rather than berating other women for internalizing the expectations of them being wives and mothers to be women's essence. I havent seen the part 2 and I'm afraid I wouldnt want to see them. I'm so appalled with them going back to Cressida as well, she's really villain when there's complexity in her they allowed in season 3 and how the society and patriarchal expectations affected her to the point in previous seasons she's willing to tear down other women.
it's like they keep undoing the things they did.
John and Francesca- nope, love has to be dramatic. Cressida to be not just "bish" and how society turned her into one--nope she's just bish.

His painting which was his passion for 2 seasons is never once brought up in season 3. Even when he's talking to the widow + the other dude at dinner; the dude asks Benedict what he likes to do (even giving painting as an option) and Benedict doesn't even have a line saying ANYTHING about it. Not even an "Oh I used to". Just genuinely upset me how they never referenced it.

Came to add that I would’ve never had her reveal herself as Lady Whistledown to the whole ton: Firstly, it shows lack of consequence, we’ve heard them hating on LW (but also eating it up, I’ll admit). It doesn’t make sense for the people to be so nonchalant about a reveal this big, this woman was airing out their dirty laundry for years. Never made sense in the book to me why they cared about Lady Whistledown so much since she did nothing of consequence in the books but at least it makes sense that they would be nonchalant.
I would’ve instead had her request a private audience with the Queen. Then had Colin walk in with her in the castle, hand in hand, showing that he’ll always be by her side like he promised. He lets go of the hand, she steps forward “into the light” like the episode title, this stepping away from Colin is showing her true confidence, she’s independent, she can do this on her own. She says all the things she said in front of the ton, but instead now it is just to the Queen. Queen Charlotte looks impressed that a 20 year old girl managed to pull all this off, she reminds her of her younger self. The queen requests an alliance between the Crown and Lady Whistledown, Penelope accepts. Penelope walks to Colin, Colin gives his love declaration like he does at the butterfly ball and they walk out the castle. The Queen calls off the bounty and at the same time, Lady Whistledown announces her new alliance with the Queen, and Pen’s still allowed to remain anonymous, but now the ton is even more scared of Lady Whistledown since she’s working with the Queen, like they won’t even be tempted to test her.

Lady Whistledown's identity should've remained a secret until the end of the show. Too many people found out so you knew she would have to come clean. Her identity should've remained a mystery. I wasn't satisfied with the ending. So now Penelope is going to write gossip under her real name? How does that work? She'll have to tone it down or everyone will hate her. So the gossip won't be as salacious, and people won't be as interested in reading it.

I feel like saying “we’re going to be robbed” about the gender swap is kind of unfair because even though Michael is going be Michaela now that doesn’t mean they can’t have the same great love story they have in the books. I understand there was some infertility tied in with that relationship and while I do think that representation is important, it sucks to see that the one relationship in this show that is representing for lgbt people gets attacked so much. I can understand that people love that original storyline in the books but it’s one changed relationship out of 8. I think that representation is equally as important for infertility struggles, especially in this era in which roe V wade, and women’s health care being taken away. I think Fran’s season could actually say something and bring to the forefront about infertility and women’s issues. I think it would be powerful because so many people watch bridgerton. Maybe having an lgbt character could potentially take away from that? Which is why a season like Benedict exploring bisexuality or maybe Eloise being part of the community would make lgbt conversations more impactful. I could see then depicting infertility in the lgbt community which is also important but I’m wondering if a dedicated season on the conversation might be more impactful. Regardless I’m excited to see where they take the show.

My biggest issues with this season are exactly the same as yours
    1. Not enough Polin scenes: Luke and Nicola do have fantastic chemistry, I don't deny that. Their first kiss was breathtaking, the carriage scene, speechless, but the fact they only had 40 MINUTES? when they're the lead couple of the season? As a friends to lover Polin fan, we needed much more scenes to see their characters build like they had in season 2
    2. Hated benedicts storyline: it was a full on sex movie with EACH scene
    3. Mondrich family storyline should have been cut out completely, every scene with them I forwarded, so annoying. They're storyline should've ended with the duke
    4. Weirdly, I didn't like how much Francesca's story took soooo much time, she took more time away from Polin and this was there main season

NO i saw a reel where they gave a real numbers (stats caluculated) of the screen time of the main couples in their respective seasons. I think in season 1 daph & Simon had 92 mins of screen time together, Kate & Anthony had 86 mins and Pen & colin had 84/82 mins of screen time. I looks like they had less screen time because there was lot of side stories going on and so many new and extra characters and Unnecessary stories lines going on made it look that way.

    You said it all!!
Too much side plots, like I don’t care about the Mondrich’s and the Violet romance stuff. It was supposed to be Colin’s season and yet, it felt like I was watching “The Featherington’s” like okay I get it Penelope is the FL and all but we didn’t got to see character development from Colin. This man was getting me eye rolling. His character was completely useless in part 2. Also, where was the declaration? Cause, I feel like we didn’t had THE Bridgerton declaration we get each season. Daphne’s “I burn for you” and all, Anthony’s “You are the bane of my existence” even king George “I cannot breathe when you are not near” such quotes that are so poetic and romantic and those which make us enjoy the Bridgerton’s love declaration and want to watch them over and over again.
I didn’t liked how the ton discovered LW identity at the ball. They all went alright you roasted so many of us during all these years but it’s over now, let’s go back to dancing? Didn’t made sense. Lacked of drama from my point of view. I didn’t got the chills from her speech at all.
Polin couple was… disappointing. The chemistry was there but not explored enough!!! It could’ve been way much better. Like instead of doing a weird montage switching from a conversation to Benedict’s treesome we could’ve had a scene from their meeting on the horse Colin mentioned at their wedding. Like wtf ? The montage was sooo weird. Also, I feel like they just filled blanks at the montage with those threesome scenes. It was so unhinged and unnecessary. This season was having so much potential, just even from the point of view that Penelope was both LW and the FL. Could’ve added so much more tension and drama! I feel like they restrained themselves this season because we kind of all knew who Colin was gonna end up with. But it is not a reason! Also, them having a baby was out of nowhere. When I saw their tree heads I just bursted out laughing because the camera angle was just weird. There is even more I could talk about but I will just stop there… Conclusion, Bridgerton went from one of my favorite shows to a nightmare I can’t seem to forget.
Thinking about the fact that to this time every Bridgerton season comes out every two years S4 should be around 2026. Until then, I don’t want to hear about Bridgerton.

With the whole Francesca story, the only reason why people are mad is yes the gender swap but also bc it ruins what the show has built. And plus, Francesca even told her mom that there are different types of love and not all have to be thrilling and fast paced. I loved her with John and she loved him, it states in the books. Though John has a cousin and ( spoiler alert ) his cousin thirsts after John’s wife which is her but John dies so the estate and whole thing goes to him because he’s a man. We’re in the 18th century still, the story stated clear that men get passed down homes, the money, everything of the last man. They switched it to a woman knowing that John will soon die bc this whole show is based on the books, the money, estate, cannot go to her bc she’s a woman, I mean why change it that if the featheringtons were going to lose their home/estate and wealth only because Sir featherington left and they don’t have a man in charge or any man to be the next featherington. The mondrich family, what was the point of that story of Mrs. Mondrich aunt died and having the estate passed down to her family bc she has sons, I mean what was the point of lady Danbury being in her spot today bc of her husband/son. You see, people like consistency, it’s not about being gay it’s more about the storyline. They showed us Francesca having a genuine connection with John and states in the books she’s always wanted to be a mom, she suffers with infertility and she’s mourned over John’s death. Though she does fall in love with his cousin and stays in the estate. Also, woman ( and in this show ) at those times we’re got shunned by society for being a rake, it’s known men do it but a ladies reputation is very important for the marriage views and all that, the show even states it, in the books John’s cousin is a rake, a man who sleeps with woman and is yk playboy kinda guy, since they gender swapped it, It contradicts everything that she has built, especially in season one when Anthony catches with the duke. Anthony forces, Daphne, and the Duke to marry because he has tainted Daphne. What was the point of gender shopping if in these times and in the show, women cannot be rakes and be mischievous.
People are just upset that the show isn’t being constant and is twisting stories and revising them and not going along by the books, This is a fictional story, but it kind of discredits the author and what they have written.

I don't care that Francesca got flustered by a woman. I'd be so happy to see a sapphic love story on Bridgerton but I think Francesca was the wrong character to do it with. They put so much screentime and effort into showing that John and her love was worthy and how not every love story has to look the same. What was the point of Violet admitting she was wrong to Francesca and validating their love and happiness together? Only to throw it away at the last second for quick tease for a future season. IMO it felt cheap, unearned, and antithetical to themes they were exploring with Francesca and John.

You literally took the words out of my mouth. I saw this season as a self-love story for Penelope, which is why I ended up liking it so much. In terms of the romance, I would say it did end up lacking and I get why that was frustrating for Polin stans. I went into this having solidified Kanthony as my favourite and because of that I think I was able to see the self-love angle they were coming from as I wasn't really looking to stan Polin but even having said that they really fumbled with the romance aspect of their story which sucked. You could tell with Colin's love confession at the end too that this season was really about Penelope and her growing into this more confident version of herself. Overall I enjoyed it but the romance really left me wanting more and if they cut some storylines and got into more of their romance I really think it would have been the best season yet because it really had all the qualities to be.

I think a lot of people were excited about Penelope having a love story because she's not the usual type that gets the guy in shows/movies. I think a lot of people could see themselves in her. She gets to be more than someone's best friend sidekick, which is normally what the "bigger" girl gets. I think it's kinda sad that she's the one that got the self-love plot instead of getting to be swept off her feet and pined after. Because to me, Colin never showed himself going after her and romancing her. Just mostly Whistledown drama

I don't agree with you with the gender change of Francesca's other love interest just because she does remarry for kids that she unfortunately couldn't with John. If it weren't for that then I would have no problem because then her story would be about how to grieve as a woman. In her original story from what I ws told Michael was seriously pining over her when she was more than happily married and he had massive guilt about taking John's title and inheriting it all after he died. He felt even worse with still pining over Francesca. That seems like such a beautiful story and makes me wanna read the whole series.
Also I hated the undermining of the quiet love. Honestly as a quiet love person, I hated it. Quiet love is only loud in weird specific moments and I really felt those when they were just on the couch or when he gave her the rewritten music, those were screaming moments to me.

My 1st thought after finishing this season was it is ridiculous for me to wait 2 years for the next. 8 episodes should've been 12.
I completely agree about your analysis of Colin's character development. We understood Daphne, we understood Anthony... but I guess bc there is a reverse where Colin is the love interest and Penelope is the main. HOWEVER, we still saw flashbacks of Simon, learned about Kate through her mother and Edwina... I think because the writers introduced them 2 seasons ago, they figured we knew enough. There were a lot of great characters this season (Francesca, Cressida, etc) but Polin felt like an equal 10% plot and screentime to everyone else whereas in previous seasons it was more Daph/Sim 50%, Kanthony AT LEAST 30%!
ALSO I WAS *WAITING* for the flashback of them meeting for the first time (made me think Danny + Riley from Baby Daddy).... but we didn't get it -_-
CRESSIDA: I don't understand why they made us empathize with her and build an audience connection to her just to send her off in suffering! and WHERE THE HELL DID LORD DEBLING GO?!?!?!! I thought in part 1 it would be a bit of that cliche/ perfect tied-knots ending where everyone's with someone or happy but they literally made him disappear and screwed over Cressida. Lowkey Eloise wasn't a great friend to her either (falsely accusing her or exposing Polin, never listening, abandoning her...) and I was legit routing for Cressida by the end. she had her little moment in that red dress but why?
    P.S. Anthony's hilarious this season

I think what (normal) people are annoyed with in regards to Michael(a), John and Francesca is because it immediately turns a story about finding love again, into what seems to actually being in love with your husbands sibling the whole time (and most importantly, whatever love you have for your husband pales in comparison to his sibling). I think it was rather nice for Violet to allow that sometimes love can be quiet and it was undercut, less so by the lightning bolt meeting with Michaela and more so by the lackluster kiss with John. Suddenly, Francesca's surety becomes naivety and ignorance of her own heart and frankly the disparate attraction makes it seem there'll be no waffling about getting with Michaela once John drops dead

Bring back the old head of costuming and design. The last ball was tacky. The costumeing I am not someone who says you have to be historically accurate but all of that glitter cheap fabric so that you could save money was horrible. And if they spent more money on that on that cheap looking glitter fabric they were robbed! They spent too much time on side characters and didn't focus on Penelope and Colin. This thing of making Colin into a player didn't work! It worked with the Duke and it worked with Anthony because they were players from the very beginning. It was part of their character. Now I know they meant to show that Colin was trying to be who he thought society wanted him to be and he realized that it that it wasn't true and that he shouldn't be that. But in order to do that you actually have to spend time with him going through the realization. Also they just didn't spend enough time with Penelope and Colin. There should have been more time with him tutoring her. There should have been more time with him realizing how he felt about her instead of a couple of dreams! There should have been time of him groveling. Colin needed to grovel after what he did at the end of season 2. He is not stupid! He knows that saying to a bunch of eligible unmarried men in the Ton that he would never court Penelope is labeling her! There was just so much wrong! The clothes, the makeup, Penelope stuff was good but everybody else is pretty much sucked with rare exceptions. The balls were even ridiculous not beautiful at all like in previous seasons. I think this is another example of Netflix cutting the budget and telling them to produce the same results with little to no money to produce the same results. As far as costuming and makeup is concerned look at season 2. Season 2 was perfect! The amount of time you spent with the characters! The flashbacks letting you know why Anthony did not want to marry anyone who could love him. His trauma over his dad's death. Everything about season 2 including the pacing the pining and everything was perfect! You all just ruined Penelope's story! Oh this is bad very very bad. I hope they get their stuff together in time for season 4 because if they don't this is it for me it's not worth my time I will cancel my subscription.
Nicola ( i hope i spelled it correctly) is beautiful. And I'm glad they did showcase that. It is great to see average size women glorified for their beauty. But she was always beautiful. They did they best in the first two seasons with horrible hair design on purpose and horrible clothing that didn't fit properly on purpose to not show how attractive she is. It worked. I thought for the most part her dresses were beautiful. They were dressed this that I would like to own. Except for the dress that she wore to the ball the first ball where she has transformed herself. I felt that dress was not enough not at all! Now the dress that she wore when she was walking or promenading with Colin oh I love that dress. And several of her other dresses are really pretty. But I expected more from a transformational point of view for the first reveal of her changing her clothing and everything.

But do agree they did him dirty this season. Show wise, he wasn’t a player. In the books, his journals actually discussed his travels. The water, the beaches, the people he talked to. They did not need to make him a rake.
Also, his characterization was demolished. It really felt like the writers did not care about him at all.
Oh, ep. 6 was named after their book and Polin were barely even in it. The LW drama and the angst should have ended in that episode.
They had conversations while they were processing this and had their happy moments. And the show did not focus on that. Ugh!

There is difference between adding diversity and assassinating the character. I felt both Francesca and Benedict was shown confused, underconfident and completely off key. Instead of showing artistic side of Benedict, all he is doing is appearing confused and sleeping with anyone who offered. Can't u show the strength and the depth of that brilliant actor Luke Thompson whos playing the role of Benedict. Not to mention, in the kissing scenes I found Penelope was adding more effort than colin. She was the one who was trying to create chemistry, colin was simply doing his duty. Lack of chemistry, lack of passion...even the witty single liners were missing this season.

She's painted as someone making desperate final acts in a horrible situation and the only person that shows even an inkling of sympathy is Colin during their conversation, but he never once proposes a way to help her. I think it's bizarre that Eloise, even as a former friend, didn't make any attempt to help her, and I was really hoping that Penelope would extend an olive branch and send Cressida the £5000 she had originally requested so she'd be able to move away on her own. Especially since Penelope makes a speech about doing things that hurt people when she felt powerless, which is exactly what Cressida was doing. I wonder if the writers thought that we'd be happy to see Cressida get some sort of comeuppance, but by the end I really just felt bad for her.

I believe Colin's attempts to find connection, meaning, and purpose, his class clown or hero personas, and his relationship issues all through the show are tied up in a kind of trauma reaction to losing his father and his mother's deep grief/depression at an impressionable age. These could all easily be explained as possible reactions to abandonment issues if the initial loss happened when he was old enough to remember but not enough to fix anything. Since he couldn't save his father or cure his mother's grief, the best he could do is entertain everyone and make them as safe and happy as possible with the tools available to a young boy. He may not have been able to progress past that until the family trauma had healed more through time passing and the eventual marriages of his older sister and brother (those relationships helped each sibling deal with their trauma, so they could be better help to Colin by example). It's obvious to me that Colin craves connection and commitment for roughly the same reason Anthony ran screaming from it for years. Because the tragic sudden loss of their father and their mother's extreme complicated grief took part of their childhood and made them all grow up too fast in some ways while stunting their development in others. Daphne and Anthony became de facto parents and head of household even while Daphne hadn't yet entered puberty and Anthony had only just reached his majority, years before either should have been expected to shoulder these burdens. Colin couldn't take on either role, so he became everyone's entertainment, their respite. But who comforts the comforting one? No one. Who respects the hard work behind entertaining everyone? No one. So he gave without anyone realizing how much he gave, worked for years with no one seeing that it was work. Emotional labour is a real thing deserving respect, but Colin and Benedict did so much of it while being passed by like wallpaper. It's frustrating.

I get how important representation is and I’m happy that we’ll be getting wlw for Francesca’s season… but damn I’m upset we won’t be having a Michael ☹️ He was my favorite in the books.
