I acquired an SL2-S recently and debated between this lens, which had just been announced, and the highly regarded 24-90. Ultimately, with much reading and after watching the excellent comparisons on Red Dot Forum Camera Talk, I chose the 24-90. For me, the extra 29% focal length on the long end was the deciding factor….as well as its stellar performance.
Goes to show that you don’t have to pay double the amount to get great images with the additional benefits of constant aperture, smaller size and lighter weight - great lens!
Great review as always, thanks! I too would like if you would do a comparison between the Leica 24-70 and the Sigma 24-70. In your opinion is the Leica worth the extra $1600 (or so) over the Sigma?
The Sigma is all new model, made for mirrorless. It has all the extra convenience features. I bought it and its an ART series and so its excellent. I also bought the Sigma 14 - 24mm f2.8. I have the SL-2 and the CL. So if I just use the lens on the CL I maintain the F2.8 and the effective focal length on the long end is 105mm at F2.8 because of the crop factor. I don't like the F4 max aperture and the CL lets me avoid F4 to attain the 105mm reach
I have been watching ur entire series on SL2 and SL lenses so many times that I can lip-sync along with the ving. Sigh... two years later since you made it, I am still in a dilemma on which one to get as my first zoom. Moving from my beloved M-D to SL2 and the zooms are so difficult to pick compared to the primes I won for M mount...my only concern with 24-90 is the F4 speed with indoor use(Weight/size is not an issue, I have been training well for it :p). In your experience Is the additional stabilisation of 3.5 stops a differentiator? DOF is not an issue for me but losing High Def and contrast at one stop higher ISO is (I also own a Q2 and guess SL2 is very similar but a bit on steroids)....how is ur long term ownership experience with the 24-90? Cheers!
Nice one! Quite an interesting direction by Leica since the SL2-S, with some lower priced offerings from what we are used to. I am curious to see the comparison between Sigma, and Panasonics 24-70/2.8 (not the 105), the price on the Panasonic pro lens is quite close to this one.
besides that 24 - 105 are the best lenses in the world for regular use.. (since the dawn of mirrorless) the 24-70 2.8 is worth a look. The only downside for some people is that its a bit chubby. but who loves its lenses carrys them. ;D
Great review and I’m looking forward to your review of the Panasonic 24-105 f4 which I use on my SL Type 601 as my travel lens and I would value your opinion on whether it is worth upgrading to the Leica 24-90. If I had one criticism of the Panasonic lens, it is that it doesn’t create great sunstars when stopped down. I was wondering how the other lenses in the group performed on this front. All the best Marcus PS. Stuck here in England we are missing the Swiss sunshine, so it was fantastic to see those great sample images.
Only nuances in differences ... not really noticeable in daily photo shooting. I shot them all with lots of photos to compare. Generally, Leica lenses for Leica sensor make a lot of sense since (even if manufactured in Japan) Leica pays a lot of attention to calibrate the lens for the target sensors. Having said that, the Sigma also gets a full recommendation since it is an excellent lens. At the very end, listen to your heart: if you want a Leica branding, go for the Leica lenses. Based on extended focal length, if you can afford it, go for the Leica 24-90. If you want it cheaper but still Leica branded, go for the Leica 24-70. If you don't care about branding but, nevertheless, very good photos, the Sigma fully delivers.
