This is probably his most ethuastic video interview. But he has an old solo live album where he's yelling at the crowd asking them if they're having a good time. Its really out of character for him.
MichaelCasanovaMusic i got a killer jaguar squire vintage modified they are nice guitars and like $299-350 new these days i bet a squire is as advanced as the fenders were then i have no idea the quality of them back then compared to now is it as everything else use once and destroy for guitars as well?? basically the same guitar is shit made now compared to back then or does the age just make it work better or feel better not the actual build
JayEdom Yeah, man. I've actually got two of those Squier Jaguars. I bought one the day they came out, and just got a second one a few weeks ago that I'm modifying. Personally my favourite Jaguars are the pre 1998 Japanese ones with the thin necks. However, these Squier Jags give mexican Fenders a run for their money, imo.
@@weatherreport3884 Sure $200 in 1984 is $506 in 2020... but the cheapest new American made Jazzmaster is $1250. So they've gone up at least ~150% even accounting for inflation.
Just realised that when he said “my friend bought a 59 refinished in Orange sparkle” he’s talking about Kevin Shields! If you watch the Kevin Shields Jazzmaster videos he talks about finding the Orange guitar when he was out with J
an album he wrote at the age of 18-19 has become one of the most influentual albums of all time. what a freak! (in a good way) mega jealous. haha j's ridiculously underrated, but maybe it's better that way?
If you get to read the new book about, and by, Dino it's made clear that J was actually not the stoner and got/gets very annoyed, very often, with Lou and Murph for smoking, He likes things done exactly right and smoking isn't good for that. He just happens to talk quite slowly and thinks about what he's saying before he says it
It's strange that he didn't mention that some of his prized jazzmasters got slightly burned in a fire, yet they still played well afterwards. He mentioned that when I saw him and the Fog in concert one time. One of the best shows I've ever been to.
thats wicked,i read an article in vintage guitar mag and this old guy went to a yard sale, and saw a guitar for $150,he recognized the fender name,so he thought it was a good buy, took it home, asked around, and his friends told him he might get $500 out of it,well,he took it to a guitar collector museum type place, turns out it was a 1951 or 52 no caster in 100% original condition, like brand new,not a scratch on it,he sold it for $50,000.
Sold J. a Univibe pedal on eBay a couple of years ago. Boy, was I thrilled when I realized it was him. I stayed cool though. It was pretty fascinating to see what he'd purchased. Joni Mitchell vinyl, mic pres, sesame street figurines, and of course old Jazzmaster parts.
I love how even though he's like in his 40's, he still sounds like an angst riddled teenager. It's as if he's never aged at all! Fucking awesome guitar, even if it is a signiture model.
No J played guitar a little before Dinosaur. Like in Deep Wound he said he played all the lead parts on the record. He was a Sabbath and Rolling Stones fan and more interested in playing lead. Sort of his inspiration for playing guitar. Also heard him say somewhere that barre chords really hurt his fingers when he first started playing. He just got really talented as the band began. With each record, his skills really progressed. Haha also 1:45
once you eliminate the bridge buzz, set the trem bar right, put a shim under the neck and adjust the string action you end up loving this great guitar.. no kidding
met him last night at the rosemount hotel in perth australia id just finished work in a record store came to see the show got there 2 hours early heard the band rehease an entire set shook his hand The guy was up himself but still put on a good show also he flipped fans off WTF you dont do that we put you where you are. anyway he put on a great show and played stuff from farm it was still awesome just needs to be happier.

i need a bit of advice, could you swap the pickups on a jazzmaster for humbuckers without routing the body?, i know i'll need new pots for full output. thanks.
my first guitar was a 63 Jag for $189 in 1982 since I couldn't afford a $400 Strat. In the last few years I've sold my Jags in favor of Jazzmasters. There's something about the tone I can't quite put my finger on.:)
jazzmaster, jaguar, and mustang. the three king guitars of alt., noise, and grunge rock. and personally, my top three favourtie fender guitars. well, the mustang and strat r tied for third. ;)
I just worked out his friend with the sparkly Jazzmaster is Kevin Shields. If you listen to what J says here and watch Fender's video with Kevin, it must be.
I remember him talking about the high action and sying he liked to feel as if he was fighting the guitar, too easy to play otherwise. Plus it produces a better tone, with thicker strings too - at least 10's. He does a lot of bends too.
kek watching this video in almost 2021 now...... You can sure tell with all the cuts in this it was made in 2008. The cuts look like something you'd put in a slide show presentation haha. Also I've seen some videos of J playing live and stuff and his action is so frickin high.. highest action i've ever seen anyone play with.
There's a *Squier* J Mascis signature Jazzmaster in white with a gold anodised pickguard, floating trem and rhythm/lead circuits coming out very soon. Around £330 UK price, you heard it hear first....
I love his Pat Paulsen persona. J could get bit by a rattler and not get rattled. He may be the alternative to speed aids, but the pickups on his 400 buck model are simply outstanding. OK, I plead ignorance as to whom the designers were. Perhaps Mr. J himself. Regardless, I like them every bit as much as the Joe Barden set I put on the same J body that I tried out, and although they are very different, they are NOT better. Just different in all things good. Kind of like the Dinosaur himself.
'Slimy Bob's Guitar Ripoff'!!! He's got to be talking about Uncle Bob's SELECT GUITARS in Norwalk, CT where I bought my first bass .... of course Bob was so mean to his customers especially kids that he went out of business and our neighbour's old friend James had to buy the place to keep it going... I think he kept Bob there though and soon there was no more local guitar store.. If I ever meet J Mascis Im gonna ask him if it was Select Guitars where he bought his famous Jazzmaster...
An Elvis Costello Jazzmaster would be sweet! I got J's. His strings don't look high. His pickups not being too loud is because the magnets lost some pull over time. GoldFoils would be sick in the purple guitar. Ive been asking GFS to make some.
you can !!! Squier have just done Vintage reissues of Jaguars and Jazzmasters for 300 bucks!! and Mustangs too! and they're 98% as good as the Japanese fender versions. GO GO GO GO GO!!!!
Seems like a really nice, opinion-worth guy, at least for guitars ! Agree with all his views on guitar (big output and string height) Thanks for the video !
For my first guitar the guy shows me these beat up old Jaguars, mustangs & Jazzmasters for like $150-300. But I pick a brand new red Kramer Pacer one humbucker trem guitar that cost twice as much. Doh!
"i needed to get a guitar so i got a guitar" the truest shit ever said

Watching 11 years old RUclips videos makes me realized we really are living in a different era

I can picture J painting a house over the summer. Takes me a week.
Growing a beard was a good style choice for him.
Yes! He looks better now than ever!!
Moral of the story: don't buy guitars from a store called "slimy bob's guitar ripoff"
4:29 the friend he's referring to is Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine, the more you know!
Lame
Yep, that became his main. So this is the Kevin Shields signature everyone’s been demanding.

"It's never too high, only too low"
Too high and the intonation suffers. Sounds like he uses that to his style, if you listen to his songs, though. Great artist.
I bought a Squier (Korean) after a Summer job around '86-'87, when I was 14/15. Repulsion was a big inspiration. :-)

If you're going that route, you can easily mod a Jagmaster which already has humbuckers to have a rythm circuit so it's the same as a jazzmaster.
what is the difference b/w this Sig one & the Squire one, besides finish and price?
jazzmaster, jaguar, and mustang. the three king guitars of alt., noise, and grunge rock. and personally, my top three favourtie fender guitars. well, the mustang and strat r tied for third. ;)
