Hey, that’s me on vocals! Wanted to check out your reaction on the track, and thanks for listening! To shine some light onto the background of the character track, it is a “metal version” of Jago’s theme in season 1, and Jago is a Tibetan warrior monk, hence why you hear that type of influence in the background. I got super lucky landing the part on this track and it all had to do with my love for Killer Instinct and metal. I was (still am) competing in Ki when Mick announced that he was looking for a metal vocalist to audition for the spot. Long story short, I submitted some previous vocal tracks I had from my old band, and I landed the part. Mick is an awesome guy and I made sure to hammer out the vocals as best as I could in under a short period of time. I’m still jamming to this day, and I do vocals for my band Kryptik Mutation. We just released an album last May (Pulled from the Pit) and definitely have some VGM influence on there with one of our tracks called Demon’s Crest. Basically took Demon’s Crest and death metalized it haha. Anyway, thanks again for reacting to the track!
@@Enemjey so the lyrics were 100% made up. I was instructed to redo Jago’s theme, and when I asked “what are the words exactly?”, I was told that they were made up due to them not having access to a Tibetan translator. Omen is a demon that (in the story) possesses Jago (a tibetan ninja dude) and he eventually becomes Shadow Jago, an evil version of Jago. Omen gets expelled from Jago's body and becomes his own entity. His theme is based on Jago's theme, it has the same melody and some of the same elements.
What I love about KI's season 1 and 2 OSTs is how the music was arranged. Before the OSTs, fans were trying to catch as much of the music ingame as possible and arrange them as best as they could. It was said the amount of music in there per character would be about, oh, 13 minutes worth. Then the OSTs come along and Mick Gordon pretty much went far beyond our expectations. Aside from the mix quality being upped, vocals more pronounced, etc., I would hear parts that you would never find ingame, and though most of the tracks follow a sort of formulaic arrangement like, say Polemos, there would be those change up the formula altogether, like Herald of Gargos. As you know by now, Herald of Gargos is a metal version of Tiger Warrior, aka. Jago's theme. Daresay it was the most metal theme in the entire game. Ingame, while obviously distinct, no surprise the two are very, very similar. Shares the same 'chorus', shares the same female vocals, shares the same intro, shares the same 'idle theme', etc. Different 'danger' themes, though, plus Gargos' OG theme is in Herald of Gargos. So, considering they are related, I was expecting the OST version to follow a similar pattern to Tiger Warrior. Mick made sure I would be dead wrong about that, though. Created a new intro, complete with partial 'danger' theme (aka. those guitar riffs), made an entirely different bridge, and that ending with no vocals but having that added guitar on top. This track became an entirely different piece of music altogether thanks to those changes. As a commenter I've seen put it, the OST version of Herald of Gargos basically took the most metal theme and MADE IT MORE METAL. So, can anyone tell I love this track?
The actual OST has a bonus track that plays after this that is really somber and great because its just Mick playing a slowed down version of "The Instinct" on electric. Mick knew that he was leaving the project after season 2 so it was his way of saying goodbye to it and you can really hear and feel it in the way he plays the notes. If you ever get a chance I'd give it a listen.
So i remember seeing a description of this song as Jago and Omen (shown in video) fighting against each other seeing as Omen posses Jago to make Shadow Jago. Enter the bridge where Jago breaks through and a.) claims himself from Omen, and b.) shows Omen how to be free. Enter the last rush of Omen turning good and fighting alongside Jago. As is how Omen's story is i believe.
So, Herald of Gargos is (in basic terms) a metal version of Jago's theme, The Tiger's Lair. It has many similar elements of the theme, like the Asian melody you pointed out. The riff after the breakdown is a little bit of Gargo's theme (specifically the melody of the theme from the 90's version). I love that you pointed out the bass in the theme cause yeah, it's ridiculous! Probably my favorite aspect of it cause it was getting slapped when this song was being made. 🤘🔥❤ Also: "Is this one of those soundtracks that come with a game?" Yes!

I have that too. No a lot of the music from KI2 appealed to me more. Still a great soundtrack all around. I remember used to take that CD with me on car trips back in the day.
This is a game where the OST and the game are ferociously struggling to one up each other at all times. Technically the music actually responds to gameplay such that tame battles play the music in a tame variation, fierce battles result in the music going nuts. Side note about this song in particular, it was the last one Mick worked on and that ending segment was sort of his bittersweet sendoff to a game he actually lost money to work on out of sheer love (and ABSURDLY insufficient budget). IIRC this song was made in 3-5 days.
Most if not all the tracks in KI have a lull moment in them for when a character is afk in the fight. Its' added in all the studio recordings of the songs.
I’m sure somebody probably has said this already because I haven’t seen this till now, but that Chinese sal ing theme is actually the main theme from Kim Wu. If memory serves. She was originally introduced in KI2.
Tibetan influence. Gotta make that distinction or else certain people would freak out. It's pulling themes from Jago's theme, and he is a Tibetan fighter.
Recommending Flow (Band Version) or Close in the Distance from Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker. The expansion is brand new so it definitely needs a spoiler warning.
I don’t know if my last comment just disappeared or what but check out the theme from Kim Wu. The Dragon Spirit. We’ll see where that Chinese influenced theme comes from.
Should seriously listen to the whole track mixed by Rkosmic (uses in game ost some of the official album is redone from scratch) a real treat but Inferno is a must.

It even retains the Tibetan lyrics, just swapping Mick Gordon's throat singing for Chris De Leon's metal vocals.

Can't be doing KI without covering Inferno and Warlord at least. And the main theme. And- you know what, screw it, just cover the whole damn ost.
Exactly can't react to KI ost without those! I would also ad fulgore's theme to the must listen category.
