Very nice! Unrelated to this video, but I just got a Graham Farish WD Austerity 2-8-0 today! It’s a somewhat old model, if you consider 2019 old. But it’s a splendid runner, and have really nice detail. I recommend you purchase one if you can find one.

Thanks :) As it happens I was watching a video just yesterday about the WD Austerity 2-8-0s and 2-10-0s! Thanks for info about the Graham Farish model.

Good morning Jonathan! This will undoubtedly become a very useful reference for me when I come to fit the decoder to my model! I went for the same decoder in the end! I did find one that supported RailCom, but I think it would have been too large to fit inside the loco! Argh! Instructions! These must be the worst I've come across yet! Also, it does annoy me that they make it so fiddly to get inside! Why oh why are those boiler support rods designed like that? Anyway, great little instructional video! Hopefully my decoder fitting will go as smoothly! All the best, Ian. P.S. The Revolution Trains class 128 needs running in on DC for one hour in each direction! :)

Morning Ian :) Thanks - hopefully it'll help make things a little smoother! I'm much more confident, and a bit more experienced, now than I used to be - I'd have been extremely unsure about this one a few years ago, and would have wanted a video of someone doing it! It reminds me of the Dapol Pannier tank, where you have to remove handrails around the cab. Yeah, I've come to have low expectations of instructions, but this smacks of not being proofread even by the person who wrote it! I've been wondering how else those boiler supports could potentially have been done - maybe the smokebox being a separate part that stays attached to the frame? I forgot to mention it in the video, but that disassembly is needed to reach the oiling points, as I'm sure you've noticed, so the tricky reassembly might actually be needed quite a few times over the years :( Ah, thanks for letting me know about the Class 128 - I hope two-hour running-in doesn't become the norm, especially as it doesn't seem to make any noticeable difference! I look forward to seeing how you get on with your Large Prairie in a future Shelfington edition :)

@@endoorrailway - Haven't taken mine out of the box yet, but duly noted about the oiling points! I genuinely thought that newer models would be easier to access and service, but apparently not... Old habits die hard, as they say!

Hi Jonathan. Many thanks for this video. Like you, I pre-ordered my loco early and it has recently arrived. I'll now need to order a decoder. Was the Bachmann decoder just one you came across first, or did you look at others?

Hi Paul, the decoder was the only result on Rails of Sheffield from a few search phrases I put in, but wasn't in stock. I can't remember if I then searched for exactly that one on TMC or if it was the only result there too from a more general search, but essentially I didn't look hard for others. Although I tend to end up with Dapol Imperium decoders I'm not at all set on particular decoders - in this case I was much more concerned about getting one that fits, and there's not much spare space for that Bachmann one.

Hi Jonathan, what radius curves are you using on your layout? My Large Prairie struggles a bit on R1 curves. Cheers Nick

Hi Nick, the points are Peco "medium" code 55, and the inner loop is roughly 300mm radius, but it might tighten to 280mm - it eases in and out at each quarter. Sorry to hear yours is having trouble, especially as the instructions say it runs best on R1 (not even "at least" R1, "best" on R1 !)

@@endoorrailway Rails have replaced mine and the new one is fine! One buffer was not glued in but I have sorted that. Just need to pluck up courage to fit a decoder. Best buy a magnifying glass! Thanks for the video 👍

I'm glad you've got one that's willing to go around curves now 🙂 I wouldn't have stood a chance without the magnifying glass!
