"High-Tech IAF Aircraft Are All Weather 24x7 Platforms, Air-To-Air Refuelling Has Increased Reach"

- IAF Station, Tezpur: In the first of our series, 'Eastern Front Airpower', we speak to Air Commodore V.J. Singh, the Air Officer Commanding(AOC), Indian Air Force Station, Tezpur. StratNews Global's team of Amitabh P. Revi and Rohit Pandita travel to the IAF base Tezpur, in Assam, after filming two other series: 'East of The Northeast' and 'Along The China Front: Commanding The Tawang Heights' . In this interview, Air Commodore V.J.Singh recalls the Tezpur base's history and the changes with "high tech aircraft, the infusion of technology, and the infrastructure" contributing to "aircraft (that) can fly 24x7 in all weather" which along with "air-to-air refuelling" has meant platforms have increased their "reach" from the "strategic location of this base in this region."
Watch the first part of this series, in which the AOC discusses changes over time, operations, night flying, challenges of the terrain, altitude and weather in the area, training, and how the squadrons on the base, in particular the Sukhoi 30 MKIs are dealing with the threats in the region, especially along the LAC at the Arunachal Pradesh China border.

I served at the Station during I977-84 in a MiG 21 squadron. Gp Capt Paranjpe was the Chief Engineering Officer then, a very knowledgeable technical officer during whose tenure there were no accidents at the station. A fine officer who used only his bicycle or scooter for official work after regular working hours. He planted the litchi plants there. Also, he used to take classes for the KV students when there was no Maths teacher in the school. A great officer and a great human being.

I remember my days in Tezpur University. Sounds of Sukhoi made sure we did not listen to what our lecturer speaks. But it was exhilarating. Seen some maneuver unseen even in Aero India.

Being a son of IAF officer. Privileged to be at AFS Bareilly. Home Mig 25 and 1st unit for Sukhoi 30.
1st sqn of Su-30 was 24 sqn 'Hawks' that was based in air force station lohegaon.
Amitabh - thankyou for exposing us to out of the ordinary topics, particularly in the far reaches of India. These type of presentations also provude a better appreciatiion of the terrific work done by our defense forces.

I was in tejpur a f station 2002 to 2005 in moftu mig 21 sqn remember all my days

Surprised to see no bombproof shelters for the aircraft
You have hangers which can withstand the missile attacks you don't need bullet proof shelter. Hangers are built in such way that it can bear rockets. Moreover all IAF base has AWACS now which will detect enemy articles and destroy it mid air.
Moreover we have such radars which can take over our aircraft if the pilot is unable to fly the craft.

@@jholworld I m not avionics expert however what I have learned from IAF people is that the air defense that's being used by IAF can detect and take down foreign aerial articles from quite a distance. Between we have huge mobile radar stations and advance SUs in borders. Regarding your question of samller stuff I submit my ignorance if you know anything pls share mate.
@@SubojeetDuttachowdhury I am no expert in military tactics etc but I work on microwave signals like radars etc and they are not good at distinguishing low flying objects like drones who can be armed with just grenades etc to disable say engine of aircraft’s etc. It’s a major issue in the West and they are all running to try to get a system to defend against low flying low speed objects. It’s tough to distinguish and attack low flying objects especially with birds etc fitting the same category. One immediate solution is to keep aircraft’s in a visually sealed hangar so that atleast one’s in storage are not attacked in the near term.

I would say that every fighter squadron of the Indian Airforce and the Indian Navy must have RCC Hangers & Hardened Aircraft Shelters for the protection of Fighter Aircrafts.

No fighter jet bunker to protect from enemy air strikes.
All air bases I have been to have hardened bunkers and such sheds. You have to understand it's a matter of cost and logistics. Planes get shuffled around, filling all parking spaces with bunkers will limit the type to specific stations a bunker that holds a fighter can not fit bigger aircrafts. Sheds can be easily dismantled and expanded.
Mr Amitabh, the most important thing in this base of Tezpur is that it does not hv Rafale or Mirage 2000 or even Tejas. Sukhoi is a gaya guzra type ,it's failure we hv seen in Russia Ukraine fight....Remember we are dealing with China in the eastern front
So u need sophisticated modern fighter planes
What failure of, sukhoi in Ukraine?
Sukhoi-30mki's are as good as Rafale & Tejas and don't worry, it will have all the advanced avionics and spears in the future which can make this Aircraft even more better and we will integrate everything which is made in India. Wait and watch.

Amitav, If security clearance could not be obtained for video recording from the ATC, Base Ops, maintenance bays, ... why travel to Tezpur? This could have been done at AirHQ, or better still, at your studio.

@nishkm Sikh Pilots wear a 'patka' in place of a turban which is similar to a head scarf/bandana (hair are in a laid back position or in the back of the neck, also shown in many videos). Wearing a helmet isn't a problem for them at all.

Yes. The real thrust to indigenous research , priduction started with Indira Gandhi and Dr Abdul Kalam. By year 2000 India could manufacture variety of missiles , tanks , nuclear submarines ,Radars etc,etc. Thanks to those efforts ,we are now advancing further .
