The “Show me ‘Wax on. Wax off’!” Scene is amongst one of the most iconic cinematic scenes of the 80s. The réalisation that all the chores were teaching Daniel the basic movements that needed to become second nature to him (and fast) is pure poetry (one more point that makes it more realistic is that Mr. Miyagi also needed to increase Daniel’s endurance and strength; both of which he gained through days of manual labour).
The sequels are definitely worth seeing: Don’t skip them!!

"Karate Kid 2" has very different story that focuses more on Mr. Miyagi, and it's very good. "Karate Kid 3" is just okay, but it will give you some important background for the "Cobra Kai" series if you decide to watch that. "Cobra Kai" is a very popular show, and its popularity could give your channel a boost. Also, if you give it a chance, you'll probably like it.
Doing chores to learn martial arts is a traditional trope in old kung fu movies. The example I remember best is when a guy goes to the Shaolin Temple to learn kung fu and gets assigned to the kitchen using a pole to stir multiple giant vats of noodles, and it turns out that it was part of teaching him how to fight with a long staff. Another guy in the same movie had to use his bare hands to tear up big cords of wood into smaller pieces to feed the fires for the kitchen, and the purpose was to develop the hand strength necessary for the tiger claw technique (now, whenever I see a stack of firewood, I think of kung fu).
Mas Oyama, founder of the kyokushin style of karate actually talked about catching a fly with chopsticks. I can't remember if it was in one of his books or in a book about Japanese martial arts that included him. I don't remember all of it, but he started practicing with bumble bees that had a length of fishing line attached to them so they wouldn't just fly away, and practice included learning the bees' flying patterns. When he could catch a bee with reasonable consistency, he practiced catching bees without the fishing line tether. When he could do that consistently, he went through the same process to learn how to catch flies. Like most karate "tricks," it was partly about impressing the general public and partly about learning discipline, concentration and perseverance.
Finally, I think it's great that you include an Bible verse with your video.

Funny story about Pat Morita. Born in California. Was doing one of his first stand up comedy gigs in Hawaii. He goes out on the stage and it is mostly a gathering of vets from the Pearl Harbor attack. He starts out in a broken pretend Japanese doing poor English....."I'm sorry we ________ up your harbor." They all laughed. Glad you are reviewing this movie. Hope you are doing well. WWII trivia (which I love) Pat's character in this movie highlights how Japanese Americans had their property taken from them, were put in camps, yet young men served in the U.S. Army in a primarily Japanese-American regiment, and most did crazy acts of valor in the Italian campaign vs. the Germans.

I have loved this film ever since I first saw it on opening weekend in June 1984. I had just graduated high school a couple of weeks before and I wasn’t really sure where my life was headed. But I remember that by the time of the scene where Mr. Miyagi teaches Daniel about how to create a bonsai tree, I was utterly charmed and was deeply into this story. I related to Daniel in many ways, from having no father during my adolescence (my father had died when I was 10 and just finishing up the 5th grade), and my mother loved me to bits but could sometimes be a little embarrassing in public. Plus we were very poor, and sometimes had an old beater of a car like they had, and I related to how self-conscious he was about it, especially around other kids at school. I definitely understood Daniel’s frustration with his life when he got upset and threw his broken bike in the trash, yelling at the bike and such. I’ve cried angry tears like that, particularly at that age, when a lot of things didn’t seem to be going right in my life. So when the friendship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi began to deepen, it really meant a lot to me. I felt like I was gaining new friends too. And as the story progressed, and his victories increased, it was all the sweeter for having been through all the rough times. By the end credits, I was floating on a cloud, and although I later enjoyed the two sequels, nothing really compared to that very first viewing. Every time I see this movie I’m taken right back to that wonderful day in the summer of 1984.

There's such a missed opportunity for a Mr. Miyagi prequel. The films touch on him having such a rich backstory and decades of character development due to his upbringing with his father, the loss of his family and the war. Highlight his youth with his father depicting him as essentially the og Karate Kid, his use of his training on the battlefield and his fall after losing his wife and child.

Cobra Kai takes place 30 years after the franchise and the two main characters are Johnny and Daniel again have their own dojos. It’s Johnny’s redemption arc and Daniel’s realization arc. Each season is absolutely amazing and they actually elevate the entire franchise. Actually last Emmy season it was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. Also Xolo Mariduena, who plays Miguel in Cobra Kai, has been cast and currently filming one of DC’s new Superhero films, Blue Beetle.

His mom disappears during the second half of the movie cause there were cut scenes. For example, the biggest scene cut was Daniel missing the surprise cake he mentions to Miyagi. He comes home with a paper he needs sign, a waiver, about full contact at the tournament. It comes from another deleted scene where Johnny confronts Daniel in the school hall telling him he needs to get it signed to be able to fight. But he comes home after Golf n Stuff going to his mom's room and wakes her up. She's visibly upset that Daniel didn't come home for the surprise cake for his birthday, and says she's not signing the form and to go to bed. He walks into the kitchen confused and sees the cake on the table and realizes he messed up.

"Daniel said Miya-JI, Mr. Miyagi said Miya-GI!" I'm pretty sure Mr. Miyagi knows his own name lol. Daniel was just saying it wrong.

I love that you noticed it was like Rocky. That's because it was directed by the same person.

I truly appreciated your film perspectives, especially regarding the camera angles and hidden story elements you uncovered. I really enjoy your film commentary covering these things.. Keep it up!
Also, the sequel, Karate Kid II is a worthwile watch. But, the third, not so much. And the remake star's Jackie Chan as the old man is pretty enjoy able.

You HAVE to watch Part III, a lot of people dislike it but i think the teacher/student message makes it the best in the series.

Cobra Kai is actually a pretty good modern continuation. KK2 is quite good. KK3 is silly, but necessary to Cobra Kai.

Watch it all! The movies are good, the more Miyagi the better. The TV show is great. It has the original cast plus additional people. So yes Daniel is in it.

You always appreciate good cinematography. Try one of the most amazing cinematographic works, the level of skills, creativity and camera movement has no equal CHILDREN OF MAN. Alfonso Cuarón and Emmanuel Lubezki (the most awarded cinematographer in Hollywood history) did a first class job.

I noticed the milk topic in another video :P I know quite a few people here (northern parts of Europe) who sometimes drink milk with their food (including me). Not really with steak and fries but breakfast for example. Or with pancakes, pasta, bread, even certain pizzas sometimes. And some drink it with every meal during the day.

Such a magical movie, the scene where miagi was drunk they initially wanted to cut that scene, It's a good thing they kept it because it got Pat Marita an Academy award, And the song you're the best around was supposed to be in rocky 3, And I of the tiger was supposed to be in this movie, but they switched it, It's funny that you reference rocky because the same writer created both of those

Glad you watched this movie. Bill Conti the composer for Rocky composed the Music for the Karate kid. Daniel and Rocky are kindred spirits, they arethe under dogs on a similar hero's journey. I hope you do go on to see the rest of the series Daniel and Mr. Miagi go through a lot together. I do recommend watching the Cobra Kai show it is a direct sequel to all the movies. I can't say much because I don't want to spoil anything but each season gets better and better.

Apparently there was a scene that was cut where where Ali tried to explain to Daniel what happened at the country club and he wouldn’t listen. That woulda made it make more sense why she was being mean to him at the arcade.

California, when Daniel walks into the Cobra Kai dojo for the first time, you see a photo of Captain John Kreese on the wall stating that he’s a veteran of the Vietnam War. At the time, the Vietnam War was very controversial to many Americans. They believed that our military’s involvement in Vietnam was wrong and our soldiers were highly disrespected. But the people had no clue what those soldiers went through. They were tortured physically, mentally and psychologically in ways you couldn’t possibly imagine. And unfortunately, their PTSD combined with a very unwelcome home took a heavy negative toll on some of our men. Sensei Kreese’s words and actions are a prime example of how not to cope with being hardened by war. If you watch Cobra Kai, in season 3, you’ll see Kreese’s backstory of how he came to be. I am in no way condoning his behavior. No one should be this way for any reason. But that’s why he is who he is.
Also, if you’re interested in seeing what a Vietnam veteran life is like from a different perspective, please, I urge you to watch the Rambo movies! If you liked Rocky, you’ll like Rambo!
