What Did The One Ring Actually Do And What Were It's Powers?

  • The One Ring is widely known for being one of if not the most powerful object on Middle Earth. However, we never really got a glimpse at its true power. When worn by a mortal the Ring distorted the perceptions of those around it. For example, by making the wearer invisible or projecting powerful illusions on the wearer's enemies. The ring also enhanced the skills and senses of the wearer, with Frodo able to see for miles while wearing it. The full potential of the ring could only be reached by a being on Sauron’s power level, although it is not entirely known what could be achieved by such a being in possession of the One Ring. Perhaps its greatest power was its ability to dominate the wills of others to Sauron's cause, although the Dwarves and Elves proved resistant to the dark lords mental influence.

“There is only one Lord of the Ring, only one who can bend it to his will, and he does not share power.” So that means that any “ability” is just coincidental, seeing far,is because Sauron is making a path to see you from afar. Invisibility so that no one but those who are there to return it to Sauron can see you. The burden of the ring even when not worn serves Sauron’s purposes too ,coveting the ring protects it and almost guarantees it would not be destroyed. Although a great story of small odds prove that not to be impossible.

Celebrimbor, the maker of the Rings of Power eventually figured out that Annatar AKA Sauron had secretly poured his malice into the 9 Rings of men and the 7 of the dwarf lords while he was teaching Celebrimbor how to craft the Rings. So he in secret created the 3 Elven Rings which were pure of light but had his malice in them not a lot of it, but it was enough they couldn’t wear them when he had his on since his influence could potentially corrupt them so they took them off until he was destroyed by ilsildur then they could freely wear the em without having to worry

It was primarily a control device. It was made to control the minds of the wearers of the other rings of power, linked secretly to his one ring, that Sauron had made as gifts for the Free Peoples of Middle Earth to bring them under his influence. To accomplish all this, Sauron placed most of his power into his ring, which had the effect of weakening him in those cases when he did not wear the ring but also widening his power when he wore it. The rings failed to control the minds of Elves or Dwarves, but succeeded completely in ensnaring nine human kings, transforming them into the Nazgûl. After the fall of Numenor where Sauron’s physical elf-form perished, he was unable to assume any type of stable physical form without the ring.
Only someone of Sauron’s power could wield the ring in ways Sauron himself intended. Otherwise, the ring would overpower the user. It would drag the weaker user halfway into the dark shadowy spirit world that Sauron and the Nazgûl occupied and where they were visible in their true form. The wearer would be visible to them but invisible to everyone else, hence the ring’s power to grant invisibility, which was ultimately a secondary feature. In this shadow world, the wearer’s sense of sight was dimmed but his or her senses of hearing and smell were increased.
The ring would also corrupt the mind of the user, making him or her act more like Sauron, and sometimes would project illusory auras of terror and majesty toward other people.
Since the ring was linked to Sauron, these characteristics of the ring increased with the increase or proximity of Sauron’s power. Of course, once Sauron is reunited with his ring, he is able to reassume the full extent of his power, which would allow him to conquer Middle-Earth, and the story of the ring chiefly concerns his efforts to do so.
Aside from all this, the ring was so evil and powerful that it was useless to anyone weaker or more benevolent than Sauron. At best, its corrupting power could only be resisted either by the very powerful or the very innocent.

Sauron didn't control minds. He told you what he wanted you to hear, and was always sure to give carefully worded statements and arguments to ensure you believed every word. It's not mind control, it's corruption.
The Ring corruptsyou and your wants. Wicked become worse, good become bad. Hobbits held it for so long because only they have no worries or desires beyond their community, their garden, and the comforts of home.
That being said, i do believe there was something about the forging process of the 3, the 7, and the 9 rings that would have allowed the One to control their wearers. Sauron may have weaved some sort of magic into their crafting.
In D&D terms, the Ring would shift your character's personality to darker things, redoing your bonds, flaws, and ideals, and you'd convince yourself that these new traits were your own idea. The Ring is subtle, but potent, and the closer it gets to its master, the stronger its lure becomes.

If i recall, the OR doesnt directly make one invisible. It partially shifts them to a different plane of existence, such that others cant see them because they arent fully there. This is why the wearer can also see through shadows and illusions, because those dont work on the other plane. The incidental effect is that it mimics invisibility, but the true purpose of that power is to plane shift. Its much more terrifying than mere invisibility.

I was wondering about this lately. My biggest issue is that characters seem to think it has value as a "weapon" to be used against sauron in open conflict, and indeed this is how sauron believes the westerners will try to use the ring, which is why he believes aragorn's ploy at the black gate. But, how? It turns one person (effectively) invisible and some other neat tricks, at the cost of your soul. It's implied that it can essentially power your army, but I don't really get that.
I sort of buy that Sauron himself can use the ring to that sort of effect, and to generally exude influencing darkness wherever his armies march in some unexplained way, but it confuses me that other characters (eg boromir) believe they can use it in this way.

The only thing about the movies I didn’t like was how little time is devoted to exploring the sheer power of the ring. Frodo does start to be corrupted and fall, but even a few seconds of his perspective would’ve been hard to deal with for anyone. That vision he saw in Galadriel’s bowl of the burned shire and enslaved hobbits? Yeah that’s playing on repeat in his head constantly, as is the ring’s demand to be put on. Imagine, day in and out for months that voice screaming in his mind’s ear to put it on. Dude was so exhausted by the end, and it would’ve really helped us feel for him when he puts it on.

Dwarves were created to only truly care about crafts and works, and since the rings of power corrupt and build upon your temptations, they just dug deeper mines and crafted more instead of joining Sauron’s army. They didn’t desire power, they just wanted to make stuff. So when the rings corrupted them, they just went mad digging the deepest mines ever.

I'd like to point out that the One's powers can be easily summarized by the purposes of the other Rings. The primary purpose was to preserve. Specifically preserve the lands of the elves and the waning magic of Middle Earth. The chief power of all of the rings, including sauron's, is preservation. It is why Smeagol and Bilbo both lived such long lives for hobbits. Smeagol in particular lived for centuries. The One stretched their lives, preserving their waning physicalities. It also, as you described, enhances the wearer's own abilities, acting as a focus of sorts for Sauron's innate abilities as a Maia. He made the Dark Tower of Barad-Dûr using the One, linking its foundations to it to make it a permanent blight. That's another commenter pointed out, all of the other abilities that the one had were more so byproducts of its power rather than its inate one. And, as the actual video points out, the chief power of the one was to dominate all of the Great Rings by focusing Sauron's will into them like a magnifying glass, and they in turn would magnify that even more. Dwarves are too hardy to be dominated by Sauron, but still suffered the ill effects of madness and greed. The elves could resist, but would have been dominated in time. And the rings that were given to men, well... we know what happened to them. But it should be noted that Sauron did not actively pursue dominating men with the rings beyond letting them corrupt them of their own accord, since men's hearts are easily led astray by fears of what was beyond themselves. The One was simply the Master Ring. Technically all of the Great Rings could do what sauron's did (especially the Rings of the Elves), but its primary purpose was in the domination of the other Rings.

The Ring gets Maiar's abilities, since Sauron poured a great part of his power within it. It does seem to get a mind of its own and is able to trick its bearers into giving it back to its true master. It even betrayed Isildur, the son of the one who defeated Sauron. But, its true purpose is to control the great rings created by the Elves so he can rule over the world. Elves are not immune to his power, they just knew about the One Ring and decided to hide their Rings of Power. Don't forget Galadriel told Frodo not to give the Ring away to her because she can be corrupted by it, even as an Elf. I'd say the only ones able to resist to it would be the Valar.

Honestly I have to disagree with most of what was said here. Frodo was able to see far because he was at Amon hen, not because he was wearing the ring. When Sam put it on it was said that his surroundings got darker, so it was harder to see far, but his hearing was much sharper. Gandalf also mentioned that there were people amongst them who could bend the ring to their will. Judging from this the one ring doesn’t really “answer to Sauron alone”, but rather it can only have one master at a time.

Basically, the One Ring was a means for Sauron's endgame which was to influence and control the minds of those who wore the lesser rings. In doing so he could conquer and control Middle Earth with little to no resistance and achieve was Morgoth failed to do.

Sauron was said to put half his being into the ring.....which made him weak when Isildur cut it off his hand...and it took centuries for him to recover those levels. If he got the ring back it would give him power half again as great...putting him in range of Melkhor's power.

The ring does not make you invisible, it takes you to the unseen world, that's the reason Frodo can see the real bodies of the nazgul and glorfindel (arwen in the movies).
So ofc anyone with power over the unseen can see Frodo, like Tom bombadil, and the nazgul, the elves who lived in valinor and Gandalf could see Frodo too.
You don't need to be super powerful to use the ring...
Frodo asked this question to galadriel.
And her answer is... That he would need to train his mind on the domination of others
The ring does not give you so much enhanced vision to see miles away.
The only time this happened was when Frodo was on the seeing seat (seat of amon hen) and it was due the location, rather than the ring.

  • @johnweatherman5685
    @johnweatherman5685 Год назад

The only incidence of far seeing in the books came from sitting in the seat that had been set up for that, it wasn't a power the Ring conferred. The true power of the Ring was two fold. First it allowed the absolute control of all lesser Rings and those that wore them. This was a magnification of the power Sauron already possess but as mentioned the dwarves and elves proved somewhat resistant. The Ring by-passed this limitation. Second, it effectively made Sauron invincible. As long as it existed, the roots of Sauron's Power could not be removed from Middle Earth. His physical form was destroyed, but the mere existence of the ring prevented him from losing his hold in the world. The Ring wanted to be with it's Master. As a result, when a mortal put on the Ring, it pulled them into the Realm of spirit, when Sauron continued to exist. The effectively made them invisible to those not fully immersed in that world. There is a mild inconsistency in the Lore here, as elves should really have been able to see a wearer of the Ring. I suspect the problem was more psychological, the elves simply refusing to look upon the power of Sauron that they so feared or some such. Invisibility was a side effect though, not an actual power.

I think the best way to see what the one ring can do is to look towards the middle earth video game’s. While the games are not technically canon, some parts have shown to be true, such as how celembor crafted the 3 elven rings. I like to look towards the cut scene during the first few hours of shadow of war, where we see celemimbor disappearing and reappearing to cut orks down. So in my opinion the ring allows powerful users to glimpse in and out of reality at their will, while weaker beings cannot decide when the one rings ability’s come into affect.

The Ring doesn't exactly make you invisible. Not in the traditional sense. In Middle Earth, there is the physical world and the ethereal/wraith world. Beings such as the Middle Earth equivalent of Demons and Angels (Of which Gandalf is one of) live in this world and most can give themselves a body to inhabit the physical world. A mortal wearing the Ring is essentially them visiting the wraith world. They are half in the physical world and half in the wraith world. If you wear it too much, you're eventually drawn into the wraith world completely. Hence Bilbo's, "Butter scraped over too much bread" comment.

I wonderes this for while, at first i thought it just enhanced the traits of each race like for hobbits sense they're naturally good at sneaking it makes them invincible.
Dwarves, makes their skin as tough as iron but still as malleable as flesh
Elven senses are spiked and enhaned to near clairvoyance.
Humans would gain instincts sharper then any blade
But now im mostly leaning towards; whatever the hell the ring wants. Need to get it away from the race of men? cuz while easily corruptible, no other race would ever let them keep yah. Need to stay hidden so that you can lick your wounds and make a new plan; make a hobbit go crazy and kill his brother so he gets thrown out. Now keep him alive for centuries while you recoup your losses. Now you just need to started on becoming whole... oh look another hobbit.

Well besides amping Sauron's magical abilities, it can basically mind control any human who touches it (One Ring to Rule them All) and if you are wearing one of the other Rings of Power it can turn you into a Nazgul (aka Wraiths on steroids). Also the ring doesn't bend light like he said but transports you into the wraith world (A reality ruled by Sauron) while still allowing you to interact with the physical world so you are basically in two dimensions at once.
-The One Ring is a mind warping McGuffing that taps into a dimension ruled by wizard Satan that fucks with your soul

The One Ring pulls the wearer to the Wraith World, so they're no longer in the physical world hence becoming invisible. For Sauron, however, he exists in both worlds and as such he doesn't disappear when wearing it.
