Thanks for having me on Aman it was great fun and I hope people found the videos informative. I think if there was anyone other than an impatient black cab behind me at the yellow box junction I could have got away with it 😂 but goes to show even with experience there are always learning points and it’s about being humble in defeat!
I’m a new mature driver (41 passed a week ago) and blue lights and sirens terrify me so all your info on the two videos on this channel have been very useful last night I was in bad traffic and an ambulance came up somewhere behind us normally I would panic but I remembered you saying they will to the lane they need and you move other way so looked behind didn’t panic and moved where needed so thanks from a new driver!
What a good sport Matt is for doing this. And he’ll always know how to use a box junction from now on! Must be a nice change for you Aman to feel safe on a mock test and know you won’t have to intervene!
It was nice to see blue light driver ( respect), to give us a heads up on best scenario for holding back for emergency vehicles, as an experienced large goods driver, I can relate. Well done
Matt, a very experienced driver as well a fire fighter for the London fire brigade, a hell lot of responsibilities, on his shoulders and caring for others, and knows his arear around London. Back to basic, to refreshers his mind. good driver familiar with the surrounding. Well done🏘
This was a great video!! So fun to watch! I passed back in December, and the blue light q&a was so informative, as when I hear or see sirens I panic 😂 great drive Matt! Shame about the yellow box though. I’ve never actually been taught or been through a yellow box as there isn’t any in my town, so I’ve learnt something today! Keep up the vids Aman!! I love watching still even after I’ve passed, your videos have really helped me have more confidence xxx
I’ve been learning to drive for 7 months now and I’ve also been watching your videos to learn even more and be more confident when I’m driving keep up the amazing work ❤
Lovely drive Matt, shame about that yellow box! Mind, I did warn you Aman is a demon with those serious faults!! Thank you for everything you do to keep the Public Safe, you're one of our heroes.
This just goes to show even the best of us can fail even after years of experience and extended high level training. I personally couldn't believe he didn't know that he could enter the box as long as he's turning 😔 he was almost perfect and I thought he was going to kill it 😭.
Hey Amin. I took the extended mock driving test recently. I wouldn’t have passed apparently, I got 3 serious faults, I think mainly because after driving for quite a number of years I do somethings almost instinctively that I think a learner wouldn’t do due to lack of experience. I still consider myself a good and safe driver by always checking my mirrors and being considerate to other road users. I strongly believe that every driver should at least be made to take a standard driving test every ten years, to keep up to scratch and I would encourage every driver to take a mock test to see if they could pass muster. I still found it an enjoyable experience.
What a great video, I will definitely take a page out to try and look further down the road when driving. Especially when aticipating other cars breaking for example.
My understanding as someone who got their license in Canada is that if the light is green you are allowed to enter the intersection and wait until traffic clears (or the light turning red and traffic clears) and can then complete the turn. This is called taking charge of the intersection and actually is a safe way to drive since it separates the decision of wanting to turn and committing to the turn into separate things. Instead of hanging back at the light and gunning the engine to make the turn you start off in the intersection ready to complete the turn once traffic clears.
This is correct only in Canada. I am also from Canada and you are correct but not in UK. Also, in Canada, in most cities you can drive into a red light if there are emergency vehicles that need to get by. That is not the case in UK.
@@NetITGeeks well if you get a red light camera ticket for doing that I would still appeal the charge on principle. Yeah it's breaking the law but I get to sleep well at night knowing I did the ethical thing there.
I had blue lights on my driving test.. I was going up a hill and there was a car parked on the other side of the road. The police car was coming towards me and because I was going up hill I panicked and just carried on driving and the police car had to stop. Thought I’d failed but the examiner told me it was the safest thing to do instead of suddenly stop as there were cars behind! I would have also probably failed on a hill start anyway🤣
Very informative thanks Matt and Aman. I got confused when I first passed my test as a fire engine came racing round the corner to the left of me on a roundabout when I was going straight ahead .
Awwww Really thought my namesake would do it because he drives nearly flawlessly just like me (test me if you want 😉👍).... I was screaming at him in the box junction to turn right!!! Totally agree about training to 100%.... Every day is a school day people 👍 Nevermind Matt.... Kudos for nearly pulling off the perfect drive 👍♥️🇨🇮👍♥️🇨🇮👍♥️🇨🇮👍♥️🇨🇮👍
32:44 but Like Matt have said, the things like that (looking that far ahead) can be tiring and consuming. Maybe an average driver can scale it down a bit and still look far in the distance but not that far. 😄
Reminds me of the advanced driver training I did after passing and how to look several steps ahead and plan to minimise your reaction to others reactions.
I don't understand the lane markings at 28:12, lane 1 doesn't have to exit left, toward the side road or A316, they can continue further round onto A4(W). But the lane 2 that you guys are in, also can exit left onto the A316... if someone in lane 1 is going onto A4(W), that will cause a conflict as you don't have the opportunity to spiral out, and will have to do some difficult or dangerous merging, unless I am missing something?
I live in Birmingham. Paramedics turn on their sirens when they can se the lights on red and expect you to mount the curb. Not all but the majority. Or spring them on as the pull out of a junction and tour the only car.
6:18 at that point he signaled right to move off but that could be mistaken to enter the right junction by the vehicles behind ?? Would that not be a fault? What if he moved off without signaling
I was driving along the A40 getting off at the perivale exit going towards the medway estate, In front of me was a smallish car, to the right was a lorry. I said to my sister theres no way that car was going to battle the lorry and low and behold that's exactly what he did, the lorry had to beep him to stop driving.
Of course we'll like and comment, it was enjoyable to watch;) Genuinely interested if ..because of his profession.. he has become more aware of his surroundings even in everyday life
Matt is a good driver, but even an experienced driver can be confused in a certain situation which is unfamiliar. If the exit is clear, we can stay in the yellow box!! I think it's important to be familiar with driving test routes prior to have an actual test. Sometimes, I get confused in a certain situation although I'm familiar with the area....😅
One thing worse than failing your test and that's been told I'm still not ready to take it! I've had like almost 100 hours now and three mock tests where I've made one serious error and a few minors so I think I can take the test but my instructor still feels I'm not quite there yet. Maybe I'm just not good at driving which is just depressing in itself but can't give up after all this money and effort. I'm almost 40 so age doesn't help but after this many hours I should be there. It is really depressing.
Based on my sister's experience in the past, she had the same issue, tons of hours but the instructor kept saying "no, you aren't ready"... If you honestly believe you are ready, I think you may have to put your foot down and almost demand the test to be booked or you will book it yourself/go through another instructor potentially...
So, if you're at a red light and a emergency vehicle comes up behind you with their lights on- you still have to wait for a green? That's not the case here, if you have to enter the junction in order to make way (no alternatives) you do so. Maybe I missunderstood that conversation though. :)
Hey we are not allowed to move through a red. If there’s a camera you will still be prosecuted and can’t appeal it. Most drivers carefully make space if it’s safe, but the emergency vehile should not put pressure on the driver to move
Really good driver but I find it worrying that after 20 years Driving he didn’t know you could wait in the box junction to turn right on a green light.
Impeccable drive. I love watching these videos and I can now pick out faults with mirror checks and observations and this video was a pleasure. When I am with other people driving it always makes me uneasy when I notice they didn’t check their mirrors before moving off or not observing further down the road. I am autistic and observations and planning for driving have become one of my obsessions. I did an advanced test and had to do a commentary drive and assess the road conditions as far up the road as I could. Observations like in this video are essential to train your mind. I sometimes go into commentary mode sometimes to stay alert. The fault in the yellow box was a shame, in fact when I was in a driving lesson the instructor said it would be a fail on test to enter it when I did to turn right but I later showed them the Highway Code rule and they said I was right. It is just one of them rules that can be Confusing.
No. You can wait on a yellow box if your exit is clear and all that prevents you from turning right is oncoming vehicles or other vehicles waiting to turn right.
Huge respect to Matt and all the emergency service workers, a driving test is probably like a tea break for them compared to their day to day job!

I'm surprised he didn't know about the "yellow box" rule. He must have caused a lot of frustration with other drivers at other times.

Why wasn’t that marked down as a fault where he didn’t stop for the zebra crossing with the pedestrian approaching?
