Kamen Rider Black really had the perfect balance of tragic story, horror elements, intense action, cutting edge special effects, crazy stunts, creepy atmosphere and great costume design.
I love how simple and iconic the black sun and shadow moon suits are. Also the kaijus designs which are literally just humanoid animals - they look terrifying!
It's often an overlooked component but the lighting used in all the scenes is so well done. I always remember this show as consistently being dark, gloomy and grimy - an aspect that modern Kamen Rider's really don't have.
I really hope the new reboot can deliver on at least some of what makes this series great. (not holding my breath though)

You described it exactly! This is my first watch of the show and I have fallen in love with the dark, dingey atmosphere!
For me, if Kabuto didn't taper off near the end, it would've matched Black's balance of comedy, drama, and stylish action. In the exact flipside, Gaim got there after starting off goofier than OOO and Fourze combined.
This is truly one of the BEST kamen riders ever made. Music, storyline, costume everything is perfect.
As a 90's kid, we are so blessed to have watched these kind of shows. This is our week ender as it was shown every Sunday in the Philippines back then. Good times.

Black was and is one of the most definitive Kamen Riders of the Showa Era next to Rider 1, V3, to name a few.
The story: as dark as Tim Burton's Batman
The soundtrack: very dramatic
The characters: well remembered
The action: intense
The Rider Punch & Kick combo: unmatched
The effects aren’t bad for the time either.
Known for finishing moves that made your eyes hurt.
To me, the Rider Punch and Rider Kick are as memorable as Ultraman's Ultra Beam and Son Goku's Kamehameha. Brings back the memories.

Zyuranger were PR adapted at was pretty dark too compare to the American version.

That ending theme always gives me a gut wrenching feeling - I have to wait one week to watch next episode. Will Kotaro ever find peace in his life? That long walk towards the camera - the hero the world deserves.

The first Kamen Rider show aired in the Philippines 30 years ago (aired on IBC 13 every Sundays at 6:30 PM in 1991) and it was very popular there back then.

In Indonesia, this is the first Kamen rider that aired in here as well. We called it "Ksatria Baja Hitam"

When I was a kid, my father bought the henshin belt, the book and the soft vinyl for this show. Now I'm watching it back here, it brings me back to my kid life again
This series is proof that it does not need to have a happy ending to make a great story. The edgy atmosphere prepared my mind to stuffs like Garo this is still my favourite Kamen Rider series of all time.
Hollywood is the only ones that make happy endings almost like a must, because it's the commercial approach that sells, that's why they do it, it has nothing to do with making a good story. Japanese stories can go in different directions. My favorite super sentai series ends with a bittersweet ending and it works perfectly, even to send the message they wanted to transmit.
There are different Japanese songs that the lyrics can be, e.g. about love, but, still be realistic about how love feels, it not only romanticize it, for example, in Amai Yume by Unicorn Table, it's about a girl feeling in love and she then feels into a sweet dream, still at some point she mentions at times the love hurts and annoys, which yes, it does, but, it's part of the sensation, so it's fine in that sense, things are complex, love is one of those.
In Japan, they can be realistic, practical, show you all sides of something, good/middle/bad sides, and still send a positive emotion or message, if that's what they want to do. When I realized this, I liked these Japanese stories even more than before.

I didn't get into Kamen Rider until last year, but I picked at random and this was the first series I chose. Best possible choice, this show is a lot of fun and I highly recommend it to anyone trying to get into Kamen Rider, especially if you're into the (late) Showa era. It's got insane fights, glorious melodrama, and a memorable soundtrack.
Hoping distributors look at the popularity of this upload and consider giving this a full English release.
Shameful that hasn’t happened. If Ultraman can get all of the Showa series’ on super special steel book blu ray, Kamen Rider deserves the same. Its especially perplexing because KR is actually more popular in the states than Ultraman is.
You should watch Kamen rider black sun the reboot of the Kamen rider black but the main characters much older an grown man actually and his suit is more epic looking trust me I just watch episode 1 and it was cool maybe better than Kamen rider black itself .
I didn't get into it until September 2022 when I watched Kamen Rider W. Best decision I ever made.

Underrated? I'm not too sure , all of the riders are pretty much liked besides one or two at least Hesei wise.
This is THE Kamen Rider that I watched every week with anticipation back in the early 90s. Iconic forever!
Such an energetic pilot episode, I like the part where Gorgom is not being aggressive like the previous evil organization where they just straight up kidnapping people into joining them (well they did too in this series),but rather manipulating people by playing mind games with them, striking their biggest insecurities like wealth and influence and promising them that Gorgom will give all of those to them if they join in, creating this sense of dystopia where society is under their control

Finally, the Century King joins in the RUclips space. Also, I always found the Kaijins in Black looking extremely terrifying than most of those from Tokusatsu shows coming from its era and later on. Seeing them now more than a couple of decades later in the future, I can say they still hold up looking like ongoing nightmare fuels.
Amazons tried but nothing beats the simplicity of the designs of this series.
The reason being the director for Black was Keita Amemiya who is director for Garo and I forgot who the custom designer was.
Black indeed defined edgy and I'd say the director took note that monsters should be monsters and thus Kamen Rider should have a horror element to it.
This really holds ups so well. The costume design of kamen rider is just timeless!!!!!!!

When I first watched this as a kid in the Philippines, I never knew about Kamen Rider or how long it's been going on. That epic opening song, his iconic transformation sequence with the smoke, and how dark it was for the time. I loved it then, I love it now.
I ride a 2015 Ultra Limited Harley Davidson….religiously. It all stemmed from watching this show as a kid that ingrained my love for motorcycles 😂

This series is probably my favorite. Kotaro's journey is the classic hero tragedy. Shadow Moon is the best villain in the entire rider series. The final battle is just epic. I don't know how I feel about the upcoming reboot.

What an incredible first episode. I'm more of a Heisei guy, but that was one of the best premieres in the franchise. I could not be more excited for the reboot!
Black actually feels more like an early Heisei show like Kuuga. It's not cheesy like other Showa titles and its sequel actually inspired a lot of Heisei gimmicks like form changes.

I love that Black's finishers are not that flashy compared to others. It's simple, efficient and gets the job done.
Nowadays, they now use other methods which kinda remove the traditional aspect of the show. Rider Kick is what embodies the Kamen Rider.

The original manga was intended to present a realistic transformation like Shin Kamen Rider. Even SIC model also made both of them looked like insects.

RX is somewhat comedic and toned down compared to Black. And besides, this is the first show where the main hero gets a form change before Ultraman Tiga.
you know what I love about Kamen Rider Black? Look at those monster aesthetics? The serious and drama expression.. the show is focused on doing a quality series that will live on as a legacy, not focusing on toys and sales but to the story and quality... and what u got? A kamen Rider series that ages like a wine. Still considered as one of the best and still being watched even today, even 20yrs+ has passed.
That guitar intro and bass of the opening sequence and transformation sequence always gets me 😭. The nostalgia!

@@edriasandika More tidbits: make him do excercises, but don't overtrain him; take him for a walks often, and he needs jogging; help him during his school days, if he has troubles with some school subject or bullying. And tv shows are just movies, but longer and in episodes. However, Kamen Rider Amazon is an exception.

Eu também gosto do Black, da era Showa. Eu sempre falo da era para separar e respeitar cada época, assim não entra em confusão com ninguém. Aliás, nessa época os melhores são os Kamen Rider 1 e 2, V3, X e RX. E sem esquecer que o menino de ouro do Shotaro Ishimori, criador da franquia, na tv é o Kamen Rider Shin. Na era Heisei já é maior e é onde tem a maioria dos meus preferidos: Kuuga, Agito, Ryuki, Faiz, Blade (considerado o ainda mais sombrio o roteiro que o Black), Kabuto (considerado por eles o mais forte da era), Kiva, Decade, W, Ozu, Fourze, Gaim, Drive e por aí vai.

No Japão não fez muito sucesso por causa do tom sombrio...agora aqui no Brasil,as crianças queriam ver heróis lutando com vilões sem se importar com história. Era perfeita aquela sessão super heróis da manchete porque a gente podia curtir as lutas,rir de Jiraya,Jaspion e Changeman e até se emocionar com as mortes de Kamen Rider e Jiban e a destruição do robô de Flashman e o seu final emblemático

I'm so happy. I was obsessed with this show and its sequel when I was a kid in Indonesia. The closing theme is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard.
This was the first kamen rider series in the Philippines. I hope it continue uploading unlike other of there upload kamen rider series it cant continue upload episodes.
