Tattie Scone Recipe 500g floury potatoes (I used Maris Piper) 25g butter or marg (I used marg) 125g plain or all purpose flour Seasoning to taste. Peel, cut & quarter potatoes, pop into a pan to boil for 10/15 mins or until cooked. Drain, and leave to cool before adding marg/butter & seasoning. I will definitely try chives in next batch. Mash, then add flour a spoon at a time, mixing thoroughly inbetween. You may not need all the flour. Once mixed in, a rough dough should form. Knead for a few minutes. Shape into an oval log and cut into 3 equal pieces. Set 2 aside and on a floured cutting board, shape one segment into a ball and flatten (by hand or by roller) into a circle about 10cm dia. Cut into 4 quarters, set aside. Repeat with remaining dough balls. There should be enough for 12 triangles. Fry quarters in a dry frying pan, a few minutes each side. Set aside until all triangles are cooked. I’ve frozen some for reheating - I reheated 2 from frozen in my toaster, buttered with jam - delicious! Serve buttered, or with a full breakfast of sausages, eggs, bacon etc etc.....
I made the mistake of frying them in butter the first time I made some & yes they were soggy. You're right, they need to be fried dry & yes they're lovely with a fried breakfast. Thanks for the video.
"Tatey" bread in Belfast. (Pronounced like late). "Slim" in South Down An essential part of an Ulster Fry. I tried to make them years ago but didn’t do it right.( I cooked them in an oiled pan! 😱). I'll have a go at your recipe soon. 🙂 They are amazing hot with a good quality Irish butter.
Certainly agree about adding chives or onion or chillies ( I eat chillies with everything). I'd also give them a try with self raising flour to see how they puff up.
Wonderful to see you making these Kerry mum was Irish so it was a staple part of our breakfast growing up. I’ve been making these for years. I make them basically the same as you but I fry them with Irish Kerry gold butter. I make a load at once and stick them in the freezer. I use whatever flour I have self raising or normal I find it makes little difference for these Thanks Kerry awesome stuff again.
You need to fry them in oil to crisp them up like thy do in Scotland and I never have put butter in them when making them well done for trying to make them
Thank you I'm going to try making them my self . I make scotch pancakes quite a lot .and thasre so good with home made jam . Thank you for sharing your day .😊😊😊👍👍💟
Aww that's lovely Rosa👋😀💕 my boys aren't keen on mash (madness! I love mash) so I don't often make it. Perfect to cook a bit extra so there are leftovers to make these definitely
They look amazing Kerry, just like store bought but better as they are home made,I could live on fried tattie scones and tomato sauce,I'm going to have a go at making them this week,if you have a TK Max near you take a look in there for a frying pan as you get top brands for less,I bought a large crepe pan instead and it's brilliant, just like a griddle pan,it's ideal for frying and making tattie scones, flat breads and pancakes etc, great video flower I'm salivating here just watching you,I have some square slice and eggs in the fridge so those will go nicely later this week 😋Xx
@budgetcookinguk Morrison's used to do them. Also, the Scottish Plain bread 🍞. Again, you could make the square sausage yourself 😉👍🏻. Keep up the good work 👏🏻🏴
Hi kerry those tattie scones looked so nice and simple to make I used to make them but not done for a long long time perfect with bacon egg beans just think its took you pennies to make look at the money you are saving ive had them with burgers egg and beans was nice easy tea or dinner or if on own at dinner time you could have a couple with bacon and an egg just get out the freezer and pop in airfryer with bacon and fry an egg or scrambled egg .my grandson who's 20 came down to see me and said nan I know how to scramble eggs I said oh how nice I said so you make it in a pan he said no microwave I said that's not proper scrambled egg I've shown you loads of time how to scramble egg he yes you have but microwave is quicker love fran xxx❤❤❤
This should be great Kerry , I learned from RUclips myself earlier this year , as I live in the Bristol area and you CANNOT get Tattie Scones anywhere here , you can get horrid potato cakes but they suck , so learned to make it myself . Indeed it IS plain flour btw ✊ 👍🏴
Cracking job Kerry , highest compliment I can give you is that they look like the ones I make 👏 Last time I made a batch ( bout 8 days ago ) I made 24 of which 20 went in the freezer, before the rolling out stage I added cooked chopped bacon slivers and cheddar cheese grated into it and some pepper - AWESOME !! My personal reference being Scottish is a fried egg and Tattie scone in a roll .. 🤤 Yes they are excellent straight from the pan or reheated in a toaster , in my case I reheat the frozen ones in the air fryer , only takes 3 or 4 minutes on each side till it’s done . Brilliant vid Kerry , cheers 🥂 👍🏴 Ps - you don’t need to knead the dough at all , no harm done though , just passing that on , I’ve never kneaded it as the recipe I seen earlier this year didn’t mention it ✊
Hi Kerry, oh my they look fantastic I bet they taste better than shop bought ones. And yes the worlds your oyster Kerry by adding as you said chives , cheese , other herbs etc ❤😊
Hi Kerry, look well delicious 😋 My mum was from Ireland and we use to go back every year and stay with family on a farm where they used to have a bakers van come round & everything stopped for tattie bread & soda bread. So good warm with butter😋 I bought some in a supermarket & didn't recognise them. Not had them sinse😥 Think I'm definitely going to give these ago. Is it better to cook them all before freezing? Thanx Kerry xx
Evening Kerry, these are Harrisons' favourites, although you canny have a fry-up without tatties scones😋😋. I've never ever made them and keep saying I'm going to as they are so simple to make. We do cook ours with some oil (even just spraying them). They do look amazing. Love them cold with butter 🤤. Tomato sauce on Tattie scones, lol. Definitely need to make these now, lol. Thanks, Kerry (I think 😂😂). Have a lovely evening. Xxx Jacs 💚❤️
Haha Jacs you made me chuckle with the "thanks (I think lol)" funny the recipe said to dry fry but I will fry with a bit of oil or butter next time. You can make a batch and freeze, or Harrison could make them?!😀👍💕 Jimmy has been cooking/perfecting egg fried rice and frying an egg. I can leave him to get on with it now. He wants to have a go with pancakes next, its egg'celent when they want to cook😄👍💕💕hope you're all well xxx
@budgetcookinguk I think when they are initially made, you would dry, fry them, but then when you "cook them at home," you cook with oil (if you get me 🫣). Could have completely made that up, but that makes sense to me for the colouration when you buy them 🤷♀️. Harrison doesn't have time to cook. He's never in, haha, he goes to a "youth" club every night. It's brilliant for them and all free. Well done Jimmy, you will have to get him doing something for the channel but only seeing his hands on screen and you doing a commentary or voice over with ingredients and instructions. I think that would be amazing and would encourage more kids to cook when they see others doing it. I'm good, keeping busy making Harrisons Halloween costume, organising the baby shower, and looking forward to our weekend away for my birthday. Hope you are all well. How's Dad? Hope he's doing good 🤗. Tell everyone i was asking for them xxxx Jacs 💚❤️
Always had them a lot thinner and I thought that was what we called tatttie bread distinguishing from the poor second best things you buy in supermarkets called potato scones. Really yearn for these, hard to find.
I think it depends where you live, tattie scone in scotland and potato scone in england. Never heard them being referred to as tattie bread, but that might be a regional thing😀👍💕
Tattie scones are the missing element from a 'full english'' ;-). If you have it - and are feeling a little decadent - then using lard or beef dripping to fry them in makes them 10x nicer!
Backyard Chef has just posted stuffed potato pancakes slightly different product it's what he stuffed them with, corn beef and mozzarella controversial?

They look great but what I really want to know is where to get the magic knife!
Aahhh Barbara thank you 😄 I've had that knife for 17 years!! Still good as new
I've had my vegetable knife for 46 years but it doesn't peel and dice potatoes when I tap it on the chopping board.
