I know this is an older video, but the D300 is still great. I just got one to use as a spare body along with my D700, which is still a fantastic camera. The D300 has the same control layout, uses the same cards, and the same battery and battery grip as the D700. Best of all, I just purchased one in super shape with 30k clicks on it for $80, shipping included.
I agree. The D300 is more than anyone should need. I used it for some years professionally and it has many advantages. Two of which are the build quality and pro layout. Great review!
I did wedding and event photography for years with 2 D300s and vertical grips. My original D300 is now the backup body to a D3X for real estate photography and is still my go to camera for family events.
I appreciate all the positive comments and stories received from Nikon D300 users. Although The D7200 is my main camera, I still use the Nikon 300 on a regular basis for small products and even professional portraits. Thank you all.
A few years ago I got a fantastic deal for a d300S, the body had only 10 shutter count, it was basic brand new in a opened box I paid around 400$ and I still love this camera to this day! Of course id love to have the D500 or the sony A9, but for what I am able to do with the D300S I can not justify the extra expense.
I needed more control than my d3500 and when I read the specs on the 300 I took a chance on d300. Picked one up with a crazy low shutter count and never looked back
You asked me to check this video out after I commented on your Do You Really Need Full Frame video. Okay this video is just plain awesome. I wish more people went back and reviewed products that are older but could still have a place somewhere. I have a D500 but I still like to use my D300 a lot. It's always like an old familiar friend since I've carried it for 9 years. BTW your photos are awesome.
My Partner has a D300s that she still uses and loves. myself, I have a D2X that I picked up a few years ago with only 12,000 shutter count, in excellent condition. I love it, and get great pics from it. we both see no reason to upgrade as they are wonderful cameras that perform beautifully.
I have been shooting point and shoot for many years and finally decided to move of up to DSLR. I selected the d300 because it looked to be just before Nikon went to video, which I didn't need. I still shoot a manual Nikon fe and so I like the fact that I can use all my old film lenses on this camera. I am very impressed and satisfied by this camera. I saved a substantial amount as well buying a used camera.
The Nikon D300s adds a movie function to the D300 camera. It is only 720p but if you desire that functionality I recommend looking for that model. I purchased one last summer with only a 7,240 shutter count for $280.00. A wonderful camera that I use in conjunction with my D500. I love them both and really appreciate the build quality of these units. Plus, the photos are phenomenal, how can one beat that.
Bless you for this vid, so true, i have a D200, my first "serious " camera....i call her Trudie...lol, i upgraded to a Sony a6000, great camera....but do you know what, i still go back to Trudie, i am a manual focuser.....she never lets me down, image quality is superb. I will hunt down a D300, the build and specs on these camera's are awesome.
In January 2014 I replaced my D300 with the D7100. The D300 sat in an extra camera bag until Dec 2015 when I had it infrared converted. From 2008-Jan 2014 I shot thousands of images with it and really enjoyed it. It's one hell of a camera!
Nice to see some D300 disciples on here... still love mine, still chugging along flawlessly... and I do a sports shoot pretty much every weekend (triathlons/cycling/fell-running etc). Aside from the obvious- prob' the best feature over lower end cameras is the AF fine tune- I couldn't live without it- regularly shooting in poor light/wide open- so AF accuracy is more critical...
My D60 broke six months ago and I replaced it with a used D300 (paid $200.00). I am very happy and I may purchase a Used 700 (for full frame). I see no reason to spend $2000 for a D500 (I'd rather spend the money on lenses).
I just bought one for my kid, because i found it at a great price, lens included. And i am shocked how good it is, for the age and price, the build quality is amazing first of all.
Hi there I recently thought it would be fun to try an older Nikon the D200 which was the older brother to this. When I buy something I like to have one in good condition. Eventually I managed to get on for around 100 dollars (80 euro) in almost new condition. The camera cost 1800 dollars new I think and over the years it didnt suddenly become a bad camera. It feels great in use and as I don't really print anything very large 10Mp is enough really. I put the 50mm F1.8 AI-S lens on the front and the images are nothing short of stunning. Skin tones are absolutely amazing. The high ISO performance isn't so great but the difference is less than you think to new cameras. Sometimes I wonder whether we have been conditioned through marketing to want the newest and best and we overlook the bargains which are out there. Ps I have also noticed a trend since mirrorless has become all the rage that the DSLR prices are dropping generally. For those who dont mind using older tech that can only be good news.....
Naturephotography wandering I bought D300s for wildlife and a backup for my D800. Great camera! The build quality is solid like a tank! Just bought it this 2017 with just 11k shuttercount!
Thank you! This was EXACTLY the video I was looking for. I'm interested in sports photography and had very tight budget. This camera is ideal for me, because with the battery grip I could get 8fps.
I've only been shooting for just shy of 2 years but in that time I've went from d3200 through d7000 and now have a d7200, d700 and d300, I wont part with the d300 or 700 firstly because they're so inexpensive but also I find their images so pleasing to the eye. In fact I'm going to buy another 300 and 700 for the closet as spares, two cameras that are far too good to be pushed aside by new technology.
great video, I got mt D300 about 2 years ago with a battery pack for $600.00, the camera only has about 10.000 shutter activation's, so it's like new. i have used it some but bought the D750 not too long after that, so it has been in the closet. you make me want to start using it again. thanks, Ive had a gem all this time for sure.
I have been using a D300 for years as it is all I can afford. I do get great images. yes I would like to upgrade to a D500. But since I can't afford it, that won't be happening. It does a great job. Yes the ISO is lacking for later evening bird photography. I need to stop before others do. And at times it won't autofocus on something I am pretty sure a new camera would. But overall it is a great camera.
Esta D300 ya es una cámara de culto, fantástica, con esos colores saturados tipo diapositivas, como los que daban los Fuji Velvia 100 o 50. Sería bueno ver más videos con más fotos salidas de esta grandiosa máquina!!!!!
I picked up a used D300 this past July for $175.00 as a second body to shoot events along with my D7200. I keep my 50mm 1.8 on it all day long or even my 17-50mm 2.8. D300 has internal focus motor, so old Nikon lenses work on it along with my D7200. Couldn't be happier with the D300. Even picked up a third party battery grip, which increases the fps and makes it easier to shoot in vertical orientation. Very heavy camera, but clearly a tank when it comes to durability and weather sealing. I know this is a camera body I will keep for years. Thanks for your expertise.
Blythe Warland: Me too.....I've been using my D300s for about 10 years and its still an excellent camera. I'll be upgrading to a D500 when I can find one (they're sold out everywhere I look) but I'll probably still be keeping my D300s.
I bough my D300 used in 2015 for about 325.00, still have this camera today... I do have a D500 and D600.... Love my DSLR's buit my D300 is actually the one I shoot daily and my pics are great still today... SO, at 64, I do not think I will puerchase anymore gears but.... That Nicon Z fc is driving me NUT's - It make me to remember my FM2 days!!!!!! so I don't know.... We'll see what happen in the near future.
Yes, the Nikon Z fc looks to be a pretty impressive camera. At only 64, you would look good wearing one around your neck. Beside it would be a great companion to your D300 and other Nikon bodies.
+Photofonz ...Way to Go Photofonz, Nice Video! I've still got mine too. It's actually worth way too much to me, to sell it so cheap on eBay, so I use it when I don't want to carry the D810 or D7200 (Marches, Protests, etc.). Also, I keep thinking of the $1795 that I paid for it, and it's still in Great condition. When the right opportunity comes, I'll probably give it to someone just starting out, someone who will appreciate it's image quality. ...Hey, it's good to see you making videos again, thanks!
I still use my D300s and my D40x with my SB600 flash.18 70, 50mm 1.4 and a 300mm afs f4. Portraits of birds and people. The D300s does movies. The D300 does not.
Hi Fonz, I've bought a D300 for a strange half-assed reason & you may think I'm a bit weird. I want to compare the skin tones look of the D300 images with those of my newer, smaller, lighter very fashionable Fuji X-T1. The Fuji is fantastic in many ways, but somehow I just have this annoying feeling in the back of my mind that the skin tones don't look as satisfying and natural as those from my previous Nikon D700 images. I'm a cheapskate and can't quite stretch to re-buying the D700 just to test a feeling, but I saw a minty, boxed D300 for £210 - and it was just beautiful and really tempting. I figure the D300 is the little brother to the D700 and will share similar design parameters and components, and (hopefully) overall look to its output: - after all, Nikon wanted it to be really top class for APSC and built it really expensive. It's also APSC so I can directly compare the look of 12 MP Nikon with 16MP Fuji. I'll get a 35 f1.8g DX and 50 f1.8g and do a comparison with the Fuji with 35mm f2 and 50mm f2. I've never owned the 50mm 1.8 'g' lens but I already know the 35 DX lens on the D700 is superb (with a tiny bit of vignetting.) I'm really interested to see what comes out. If the D300 shots look better to me, I may have to re-buy the enormous and heavy D700 LOL. Tim
Hi there, wanted to say nice video. I just picked up a D300 on ebay, just like you said, $240-$300 - before seeing this video, though. I agree with you. I'm not a photog, but appreciate a good camera. Coming up from a d40 to d300 was quite a change, but thankfully prices allowed me to pick this up. So, appreciated your video .
I have a load of later Nikons but this bought new is still a go=to, I would not buy the bracket as it makes the camera clumsy but would buy the 810 battery pack as this enables me to use the higher capacity batteries which also powe my D700 and D3x.
D300 is the oldest out of all DSLR cameras I own, but I still grab it very often. What today's lazy and naive people don't understand is that 1) " Best Camera" for one reason or another isn't the best for you. 2) Gigapixel sensor and Gillion ISO on their own don't make a good camera. For years I was suffering from GAS and I was chasing the latest and greatest cameras until I saw some documentary about NASA. In this film I've heard one of their engineers saying something that changed my approach to gear dramatically - this guy said that NASA uses equipment which is only good enough to do the job... ...and this triggered sober thinking in my head. I still buy new cameras and lenses but not as often and not as expensive as before. My wallet is healthier and my photography didn't worsen since, so what's not to like about it. I know it's hard to resist GAS , but I made it and good luck to everyone who will decide to do the same.
Hi, Bought mine a couple of years after the date you bought yours. Have had a similar good expierience with it.... most impressed with the battery which is 15 years old and works quite well still.....Althought havent use it much lately, I was wondering if I wanted to purchase a spare battery, which specs should i look for?, mine is 1500mA; are the generic batteries sold in amazon any good? Also, I understand you can go up to 32 Gygabites on the CF, have you tried using an SD card within a CF adapter? thanks in advance for any info.
As for spare batteries: When I got spare batteries for my Nikons, the specs were the same for both the Nikon brand and the generic brands and the generic brand worked fine. However, in my case, I find the Nikon brand held the charge a little longer. As for the CF memory cards versus SD cards: I never tried using the adapter as I had an abundance of CF cards that I used for my wedding photography. Although I no longer have the Nikon D300, I used it quite heavily until it quit on me, then I sold it for parts on eBay. I really enjoyed that camera body with its quality workmanship and great looking images. Best of luck with it.
When making comparisons with recent higher megapixel systems, my dilemma is determining whether the image quality at 12mp is superior to 24mp or 36mp. My understanding is the comparatively larger and less densely packed pixels on a 12mp sensor result in less noisy image output, but I think dynamic range may improve with higher megapixel systems. As higher pixel density sensors are developed I presume the digital signal processing hardware and software keeps pace and perhaps eliminates the noise issues.
I am a novice photographer who has just picked up this camera for $275.00 with quite a few accessories. The woman who owned it, bought it new with the idea of doing wedding photography in the summer months( she is a teacher) , but it never panned out and the camera sat for years , unused. I am told the shutter count is extremely low, as she only did two events before deciding this was not for her. I am thankful for your taking the time to post this video and you have made me feel as though I made a wise purchase. My main goal for this camera is to shoot scale models of automobiles and military craft.
I think in many areas technology has reached its peak where buying something new is just falling a victim to commercials, as your current or previous item is in every way capable to cover your every need, or even exceed it, as in this case Nikon D300. We need to start appreciating what we have already; look where our insane consumerism has taken us, socially and ecologically. Not talking about obvious - materially. And oh, $240-300 for something that used to cost $2000? Good things come to those who wait. ruclips.net/video/d9GZfD0wXb8/видео.html .
I picked up a D300 last year, June of 2018... It had 9000 shutter activations and came with the 18-200 Mm lens. I purchased a 35mm f1.8 and could not be happier. The portraits I am getting are absolutely beautiful and o cannot wait to be able to get out more to get some outdoor shots. I have researched many lenses. Could anyone recommend a good telephoto lens for birds and sporting events? Also considering a macro lens. Suggestions?
This is a great lens....I've used this for birds / wildlife photography for many years. Currently costs approx £500 (new) in the UK but there are cheaper ones available on ebay. It can be used on both FX and DX cameras.....on a Nikon DX camera it will be the equivalent of a 450mm lens. www.nikon.co.uk/en_GB/product/nikkor-lenses/auto-focus-lenses/fx/zoom/af-p-nikkor-70-300mm-f-4-5-5-6e-ed-vr
How big of a family portrait would you enlarge using the d300s (iso 100-200) with the Nikkor 17-55 f2.8 lens with fill flash on a bracket? Some say you are pushing the limits at an 11x14, you say as large as a 24x36, could you just send the digital file to Bay Photo or White Wall to color correct and print a 24x36? And you think, as a pro, that it would look nice enough (sharp enough at 2 foot plus viewing distance) to hang on my living room wall? Thanks. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! And great question. I remember reading and hearing about what you mentioned, that 11x14 is the largest recommend size to be printed from something like a 12 MP file size. But, I found going back to the days I was using my Nikon D300 for wedding & portrait photography, I sold & had samples of 24x36, (24x30) and many 20x24 inch prints. Even using my Fuji S2 & S3 I made beautiful photos going to 24x36 inch prints. Getting to your question about how big I would go with a family portrait, as long as the head sizes are not too small, I would easily go 24x36. One thing to keep in mind: Your exposure, lens quality, amount of cropping, all play a part in the quality of your final image. Try it. I think you'll be amazed at the results you can get. When I get caught up, I'll see if I can address this in a RUclips video. Thanks again for the great question.
@@photofonz Thank you for the quick reply. I don't know why some people ditz the d300(s). With an image, it is either well composed, lighted, in sharp focus, good posing of your subject, capturing good facial expressions, etc. and that the enlargement is sharp with good color saturation, etc. or it isn't... And if the D300(s) can capture the aforementioned, as photofonz suggests, it is definitely still a good still life and portrait photography camera even by 2022 standards. Sure it is no D810 or D850, but if the enlargement is beautiful, who cares what camera was used to capture the image. Thanks Again!
First of all at 2014 have bought d5300 with 18 55 and 55 300 mm it was realy Hard to get this camera i loved it very much būt unfortunately it was stolen iņ 2016 Iwas realy upset, and one month ago i got used nikon d300 with some kind 24 - 70 tamron, dūring buyng this camera i was realy sceptic to that camera. I have used it onemonth. Omg and i felt iņ love with it, i like the desighn and ergonomic of d300, today i have got 2 lēns 35 mm nikor DX and 18-105mmalways dramedof that kit Total spent 130€ for nikon and 2 lensesfor 200€ Talking about video: Who neds video on photo camera?
Great review, very true, a good photographer can squeeze great shots out of anything, random question, great glasses, may I please ask the brand and code?
Thank you. I got these at Zenni Optical years ago. A great company to do business with. My wife has several pair she got from Zenni's. www.zennioptical.com/ The code is #4424315, but I see they are now retired. They have many great looking styles to choose from. Perhaps you can find something similar. Best of luck.
I want to ask you, how to replace the DSLR internal clock batteries in nikon? I have Nikon D300s, its been a while since i used it and it seems dead, can you do a video on this topic please, cheers.
Yes, the D300 is still a great camera by today's standards. Still using mine on a regular basis. Not sure if it's the exact same sensor as the D5000 & D90, but the sensors have the same resolution (12.3 MP) & same size (23.6 mm x 15.8 mm) Ayy
Someone recently asked me a similar question, so I'll post my response again here. Best of luck: While I'm generally not a wildlife photographer, I have listened to several photographers who are and they usually like a long telephoto lens in the 300-600mm range. Setting your D300 up for back button focus can also help you with better and faster autofocus. I've come across a good article by Todd Vorenkamp that you may want to read: www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/hands-review/birding-dream-team-nikon-d500-and-nikon-300mm-f4 Roman Kurywczak has some really good info about bird/wildlife photography: ruclips.net/video/58G-ttOw6PM/видео.html
photofonz Thanks for the response and links. The bhphoto link is all about the D500 though. Yes, it talks about the 300 lens but not on the D300 do kinda comparing apples and oranges. No? Two different animals. Nonetheless, thanks for the links.
What's a fair asking price for a D300? I have a coworker looking to sell me one and I don't think he'd take advantage of my lack of knowledge but it'd be nice to know around what I'm looking at
If it's in excellent/VG condition, I would offer something in the $300 range. Nikon D300s are selling on eBay in the low $200 range to $300-$360 for bodies in mint condition & low actuations.
You did a very nice job on this video. I purchased my D300 through E-Bay about 7 months ago to compliment my 2 D3300's that I have. My question is it appears you aren't using your D300 anymore. What camera are you using now? I've been thinking in getting rid of my D3300 and going with a new D7100 because of the $500 instant rebate putting the cost at $688 which isn't bad for a new camera. Or do you have any thoughts on a older model of camera that would be a better buy? Best wishes, Duane
Thank you Duane. Yes, I started using my Nikon D300 again, replacing my old Fuji S2, doing small product and jewelry photography. My main camera for assignments is the Nikon D7200, which is an outstanding body. For travel and fun I like the mirrorless Fuji X-M1 and most recently used the Fuji X-70 on a travel assignment. The X-70 is truly amazing.
Thank you for your reply. I like the build of my D300 and the fact it has a focusing motor in the body which allows me to use the older D lenses (which I can't use those lenses with my D3300) I'm hoping that I'm making a good choice in getting the D7100 (I don't do videos so the D7200 doesn't interest me) The only mirror less camera that I have is the Nikon Series 1 V2 but it hasn't caught my interest much. Best wishes, Duane
That Nikon D300 should give you many happy years of shooting. My favorite portrait lens for a long time has been the NIKON AF-S VR NIKKOR 70-200mm F/2.8 G ED.
Back in it's day, I used 4 GB Sandisk Extreme Ducati Edition & 2 GB Sandisk Extreme III CF cards. I also used Transcend & Lexar cards. All worked very well. I heard of photographers using 16 & 32 GB cards without any problems. With the latest firmware, 64GB should also work for you. For more info take a look at: www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-596474-1.html
I've never owned the Nikon D90 so personally I cannot compare the two, but looking at the reviews, they are very similar and either one would be a good buy for someone looking in this price range. One thing that may help you decide is that the D300 has environmental sealing, while the D90 does video. If it was me and shooting video was not a concern, I personally would consider the D300.
What does that mean is it full size or cropped . Is DX a nikon named sensor ? Its either a cropped camera or a full frame ,which is it ? My D1H has a 1.5x focal length multiplier so I take that as its not a ff camera but a crop sensor right ? So is the d300 a cropped sensor camera ?
Hi I am Looking To Purchase a camera the Photography Teacher told me to buy a Nikon 3300 but He also showed me a D300 Is the 3300 that much better to spend double the money
First, the Nikon D300 is older technology, plus it does not shoot movies. It does however give you certain advantages such as: Weather sealed, focusing motor, longer battery life, more focusing points, etc. If you don't need these, then you may want to consider the 3300. If the budget allows, a better choice may be the D5300 or D5500.
HELP! I have a Nikon D300. It doesn’t have video but I’m told I can use live view some how. Can anyone help me set up my D300 as a webcam on a Mac so I can use it with Zoom.us ?
Hi, I'm two years late but the answer is you have live view but not movie mode. You can look at the live view by switching the wheel on the left. Live view is good with getting accurate focus - it's like an enlarged viewfinder.
Really nice review, you mention a couple of points, like the battery door, that many others miss. I am at the moment thinking of a D300s, not for the movie capability but because I can get one with a good lens for ab 320$! But I am curios ab one thing, I used to have A D90 and then a D5100 and the AF simply did not work when it got darker. How is the D300 af in darkness?
Thank you. In darkness, the D300 AF is pretty much like other cameras. In total darkness, AF is useless, but there are several things you can do to establish a focus point. Here's a couple of things I would do when using my D300 for wedding & portrait photography in an area that was pretty much in total darkness. When I would photography the bride & groom holding sparklers, I would have an assistant, or it could be one of the people you are photographing, hold a lighter or a flash light in the area you want to be in focus. Using manual focus or back button focus so there is no refocusing when the shutter is pressed. The same holds true when I would photograph a couple or an individual in the moonlight using flash. A lighter or flashlight would help light up the area I need to be in focus. Of course, remove the lighter or flashlight once your focus is locked. In extreme low light situations, you may be able to focus on a bright area in the spot that you want to be in focus. If that does not work, switch to manual focus if you have not set your camera up for back button focus. Several years ago, I switched to back button focus and cannot go back to the traditional way of focusing. There are so many more advantages. Best of luck! Enjoy your D300s, if you get it.
It depends on the camera body. Some bodies have a higher shutter life expectancy than others. Also depend on the overall condition of the camera and of course the price.
If you are new to using DSLR cameras, it may seem complicated at first but nothing that can't be learned. Although the Nikon D300 may be a little dated, it still has the capability of producing professional quality images. It may be a great choice for a beginner wanting to get more serious about photography, especially when you consider the price of the D300s today.
Thank you for your answer! I'm little concerned about the size of it, I'm afraid that because of it I'll often leave it at home because it looks too big. I need a camera mostly for wildlife and macro photography in low light. My budget is around 400$ including the lense. If you have any suggestions please help.
I personally have never done it, but it can be done by a qualified technician. Although from what I've heard, it could be a bit pricey. If you think the sensor is scratched, it could be the low pass filter that goes over the sensor. If that's the case, you can have a B&W infrared conversion conversion done. What the conversion does is remove this hot mirror filter and replace it with our custom manufactured infrared or clear filter. One source that I'm familiar with is LifePixel. From what I understand, they can also replace your scratched sensor assembly's low pass filter with a scratch free filter, if that's what it is. However, with what the Nikon D300s are selling for currently, you may want to replace it with a good pre-owned one.
Congratulations, looks like you got a great deal. The D300's are getting harder to find.
I agree. The D300 is more than anyone should need. I used it for some years professionally and it has many advantages. Two of which are the build quality and pro layout. Great review!
I just bought a D300 for $100 in 2023. It’s still an amazing camera. I never enjoyed digital, until I found this camera.
Yes, if you can find a good one, it's still an amazing camera even by today's standards. Congratulations on your find.
Thank you all.
wow, now i'm interested in getting one....and i have two d700's!
Awesome fonz,still using mine also.
Thanks Malik & Best of Luck with your new D300!
Picked one up with a crazy low shutter count and never looked back
I still use mine a lot. One of the top portrait photographers in the San Francisco Bay Area still uses hers as her main camera.
BTW your photos are awesome.
exactly my thoughts.an
old friend.
I still use this camera in 2021, great camera, get some good lenses and you are good to go.
im in 2023
My Partner has a D300s that she still uses and loves. myself, I have a D2X that I picked up a few years ago with only 12,000 shutter count, in excellent condition. I love it, and get great pics from it. we both see no reason to upgrade as they are wonderful cameras that perform beautifully.
Thanks for sharing!
I had the Fuji S2 before I got my D 300, it’s 2023 and I still shoot with my D300
My D60 broke six months ago and I replaced it with a used D300 (paid $200.00). I am very happy and I may purchase a Used 700 (for full frame). I see no reason to spend $2000 for a D500 (I'd rather spend the money on lenses).
I use this camera every day even though I have a D700 and D800E. It's a great camera.
Nicholas Fox well thats just dumb
@@joshooahh lol
I just bought one for my kid, because i found it at a great price, lens included. And i am shocked how good it is, for the age and price, the build quality is amazing first of all.
Yes, the build quality is really amazing on the D300.
That's a really nice review. I am planning to buy one as well..
I think I'm going to buy this camera as wildlife camera...it's great to know that is still great body!
Naturephotography wandering I bought D300s for wildlife and a backup for my D800. Great camera! The build quality is solid like a tank! Just bought it this 2017 with just 11k shuttercount!
Guru Thank's! I bought a nikon d90 with a great sale as new from a store near home
I own two D300s, each with the grip feature. Bought them used over time. They allow me great latitude and for cheap $
Does the 300s work well in low light? For landscape shots is the resolution sharp despite the 12MPixel sensor?
I still use my d300 today excellent camera.
Thank you! This was EXACTLY the video I was looking for. I'm interested in sports photography and had very tight budget. This camera is ideal for me, because with the battery grip I could get 8fps.
Oldie but goodie. I have one also that I bought when it first came out. The D300s has 2 card slots.
Just wondering, did you buy another D300, and are you still using it?
great video, I got mt D300 about 2 years ago with a battery pack for $600.00, the camera only has about 10.000 shutter activation's, so it's like new. i have used it some but bought the D750 not too long after that, so it has been in the closet. you make me want to start using it again. thanks, Ive had a gem all this time for sure.
I just bought one with the mbd 10 battery grip and 27k shutter count with boxes and instructions,i love it amazing classic camera.
Tks a lot; your video encourage me using my D300, I thought it was out of date facing the new technologies.
Other cameras have come and gone, but my D300 is always gonna be my go to shooter.
My d300s, d7000 and d2x are my favorite cameras
I made a decent second income with this camera. still have it. feels great in the hands. a real work horse.
I still use my D300s but am saving up for a D850, even when i get it I will still use the D300s
Blythe Warland: Me too.....I've been using my D300s for about 10 years and its still an excellent camera. I'll be upgrading to a D500 when I can find one (they're sold out everywhere I look) but I'll probably still be keeping my D300s.
cool video I am still using my nikon d200 i bought back in 2005. now i am considering the d500 as replasment
I literally just bought one of these for $95USD to compliment my D700. Can't wait.
Still using mine. Plan on upgrading to the D500 later this year, but the d300 is still very capable.
I have the D7000 & D300s, I prefer the D300s, mine had over 300,00 shutter actuations when I got it and it is still going.
Great video thanks
Hello Photofonz.... nice video... i have two D300 bought used and they work very well... i especially like how the black and white pics come out...
I really like your videos thank you for sharing your expertise
Still using this for casual photographies and gotta buy new upgrade for video recording, the d3500 :)
Always appreciate your videos. The D300 is more than anyone needs even in in 2018 I still use mine.
Jeff Rey i have a question.. does it makes videos??
Jeff Rey i have this d300 but video does not work
While the Nikon D300S does make videos, the D300 does not.
photofonz thanks
I still use my D300s and my D40x with my SB600 flash.18 70, 50mm 1.4 and a 300mm afs f4.
Portraits of birds and people. The D300s does movies. The D300 does not.
Thank you, Sir..I' m just buy the D300 demo store..600 Shoot...Like It!
Tim
Great video, thanks, just bought a used 300(s) :-)
Hi there, wanted to say nice video. I just picked up a D300 on ebay, just like you said, $240-$300 - before seeing this video, though. I agree with you. I'm not a photog, but appreciate a good camera. Coming up from a d40 to d300 was quite a change, but thankfully prices allowed me to pick this up. So, appreciated your video .
I am very proud of my Nikon D300...A Big Like for you my friend...
Thank you. 👌
I love my D300
I have a load of later Nikons but this bought new is still a go=to, I would not buy the bracket as it makes the camera clumsy but would buy the 810 battery pack as this enables me to use the higher capacity batteries which also powe my D700 and D3x.
D300 D300s Awesome cameras...hard as nails! (:>)
D300 is the oldest out of all DSLR cameras I own, but I still grab it very often.
What today's lazy and naive people don't understand is that
1) " Best Camera" for one reason or another isn't the best for you.
I would imagine that you could make even larger prints with Topaz Gigapixel.
Love the D300! I didn't understand when he said "2 live view modes"?. Motorised body is probably my favourite feature. Great video!
Handheld and Tripod modes of Live View.
@@photofonz thanks for the response. Good luck to you
Keep up a good work . Which time will Nikon make an update for D810 ? Keep us informed with appreciation.
170 or so bucks on Amazon right now. Amazing deal especially considering the point and click market is rising
I have always wondered what happen to all the older cameras
Good video
Great Video!

I still shoot with my D300 til this day.
Me too. Use with AF-S Nikkor 17-55mm 1:2,8 G and AF Micro Nikkor 200mm 1:4 D
This is really helpful thank you
I picked up a D300 last year, June of 2018...

@@paganphil100 Does the 300s work well in low light? For landscape shots is the resolution sharp despite the 12MPixel sensor?

Great review, very true, a good photographer can squeeze great shots out of anything, random question, great glasses, may I please ask the brand and code?

I want to ask you, how to replace the DSLR internal clock batteries in nikon? I have Nikon D300s, its been a while since i used it and it seems dead, can you do a video on this topic please, cheers.
With a 1/8000 sec. shutter speed does this camera shudder when it shoots?
What a great camera with 100% viewfinder! Same sensor as D5000 and D90 am I right? Kari from Finland .. Ayy
Yes, the D300 is still a great camera by today's standards. Still using mine on a regular basis. Not sure if it's the exact same sensor as the D5000 & D90, but the sensors have the same resolution (12.3 MP) & same size (23.6 mm x 15.8 mm) Ayy
Still have mine! I'm now looking for a wildlife lens!! So far I have the kit 18-200 and the 70-300VR. Any suggestions?
Someone recently asked me a similar question, so I'll post my response again here. Best of luck: While I'm generally not a wildlife photographer, I have listened to several photographers who are and they usually like a long telephoto lens in the 300-600mm range. Setting your D300 up for back button focus can also help you with better and faster autofocus. I've come across a good article by Todd Vorenkamp that you may want to read:
www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/hands-review/birding-dream-team-nikon-d500-and-nikon-300mm-f4
Roman Kurywczak has some really good info about bird/wildlife photography: ruclips.net/video/58G-ttOw6PM/видео.html
photofonz
Thanks for the response and links.
I like the build of my D300 and the fact it has a focusing motor in the body which allows me to use the older D lenses (which I can't use those lenses with my D3300)
I'm hoping that I'm making a good choice in getting the D7100 (I don't do videos so the D7200 doesn't interest me)
The only mirror less camera that I have is the Nikon Series 1 V2 but it hasn't caught my interest much.
Best wishes,
Duane
i have unopened box Nikon D300 at home
İ did get it 16 years ago..
what you suggest to me G lens just for portrait for D300?
thnx..
That Nikon D300 should give you many happy years of shooting. My favorite portrait lens for a long time has been the NIKON AF-S VR NIKKOR 70-200mm F/2.8 G ED.
Would the D300/s work with only an SD card and nothing in the CF card slot?
It only takes a CF card, not SD.
@@djtoman6875 The 300S model has a CF and SD card slot, though...
Yes. You can shoot the SD card only (CF slot blank). Better yet you can get a CF to SD adapter and shoot with 2 SD cards on the D300s.
Thank you, much appreciated
What is the biggest size memory card can it use ? Thanks

D300 or the D90? Which one to buy
Is this a crop sensor or full frame camera ? I'm ready to replace my D1H because I can't find a new fresh battery.
The D300 is a DX crop sensor camera.
What does that mean is it full size or cropped . Is DX a nikon named sensor ? Its either a cropped camera or a full frame ,which is it ? My D1H has a 1.5x focal length multiplier so I take that as its not a ff camera but a crop sensor right ? So is the d300 a cropped sensor camera ?
yes
Enjoy your D300s, if you get it.
can i take a photo in RAW with d300?!
The Nikon D300 has the option of selecting to shoot in Raw, Tiff or Jpeg. You can also select Raw + Jegs on the one CF memory card.
Does actuation play a role when buying an older camera?
Sure. It's like mileage on an automobile. Actuations, also known as shutter count, reveal the amount of photos taken with the camera.
So it’s not a good idea to buy an older camera since it may have more than usual actuation...
It depends on the camera body. Some bodies have a higher shutter life expectancy than others. Also depend on the overall condition of the camera and of course the price.
Is this camera good for a beginner photographer or it's too complicated?
È possível trocar o sensor da D300?
