    Another powerful book I highly recommend on this topic is When Only God Can See: The Faith of Muslim Political Prisoners by Walaa Quisay and Asim Qureshi.

      We had the honor of hosting her at the AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic studies to present her work. A truly remarkable and understudied field that shows the need for liberatory theological interpretations

      wayu/thiroona AAala anfusihim walaw kanabihim khasasatun (59:9) - وَيُؤۡثِرُونَ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمۡ وَلَوۡ كَانَ بِهِمۡ خَصَاصَةٞ
      alamru bilmaʿrūf wanahyu ʿani-l-munkar (pursuing what is good and prohibiting what is bad) - ٱلْأَمْرُ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَٱلنَّهْيُ عَنِ ٱلْمُنْكَرِ

    Dictators are brutal, but the degree of brutality varies depending on the strength of the opposition they face. Stronger opposition often prompts harsher measures to maintain their regimes. In Arab countries, the strength of opposition to dictatorships differs, influenced by local realities, which in turn shapes the level of brutality these regimes exhibit.
